PALM COAST, Fla. (AP) — Officials say the nephew of the Dalai Lama has been killed along the side of a Florida highway during a 300-mile “Walk for Tibet.”
The Florida Highway Patrol says 45-year-old Jigme K. Norbu was hit by an SUV about 7:30 Monday night along State Road A1A along the east coast.
According to www.ambassadorforworldpeace.org, Norbu was walking on Valentine’s Day from St. Augustine south to West Palm Beach to bring awareness to the Tibetan struggle for independence from China. He has done the walks several other times including in 2009 from Indiana to New York.
That one marked the 50th anniversary of a failed Tibetan rebellion against Chinese rule that resulted in the exile of his uncle.
Norbu of Bloomington, Ind., was the son of the Dalai Lama’s late brother, Taktser Rinpoche.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Flaglerlive.com has a detailed report on the accident here.
Here’s a video of Norbu during a demonstration in Chicago last spring:

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 2:35pmI admire his love of country and courageous heart, albeit displayed in a reckless fashion, walking 300 miles is not an easy thing. Insult him if you will, I would trade him for many of the sheeple I see today; you can do only so much wearing a ribbon… or for that matter posting on Blaze

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 9:48amNote that the article says “SUV,” not motorist, as if the driver was completely out of control of the vehicle and the SUV just decided to hit a passing Tibetan protester on its own.
When it’s an SUV, it’s always pointed out. SUV’s must be against a free Tibet.
All things aside, it is a tragic event.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 9:08amHere’s an idea: Don’t walk along the highway – not only did Mr. Norbu put himself in danger, but he could have caused the death of others.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 7:37amThis is sad, and I wish for him to continue his path to enlightment (become a Buddha) on his next life. Now, for those people who are spewing hate about his misfortune, I and most Buddhist do feel sorry for you as your bad Actions, Speech, and Thoughts will create negative Karma that results in experiencing constant suffering (cause & effect) in this lifetime and in future ones. So when you are experiencing suffering and you start thinking “What Did I Do To Deserve This” try to remember your bad causes.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 6:21amI guess those of you who find some joy in this death or find that he somehow deserves this are no better people than the leftists that would wish Cheney had a heart attack or made fun of Rush’s addiction. You people are of low character and more than likely not able to form a cogent political direction for our country, since a respect for life and liberty is a neccessary foundation for which you lack. I can‘t wait to read your posts saying how I’m an idiot or deserve to die for announcing my revulsion over your level of discourse.

According to his Religion’s belief in reincarnation,he may come back as a street sign! Thats what one gets for being a non-American protesting in America. He would have fared better in Egypt where he could “walk like an Egyptian”!

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 12:06pmHe was an American living in my hometown. I know his family and they are wonderful people. His father was a acclaimed professor and Kunga,(the name I know him by) ran a very successful, very tasty Thai Restraunt. His brother is a very successful businessman in town. Way to jump to a conclusion on something you know nothing about.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 4:57amI have to say, not too bright walking in the dark on the side of a highway. Any reflective gear/stripes? which would be the least that common sense would dictate.
Still, a tragic accident.

Report Post »At the risk of sounding insensitive, there is a reason we are taught to walk facing traffic when walking on the road. Like the law requiring cyclists to ride with the traffic, pedestrians walk against traffic for safety reasons.

Report Post »First of all cyclists are not allowed on highways unless it’s the only way to get from point A to B .
Second cyclists are allowed to ride on regular roads & when there’s no bike pass they have the right to share the road with cars , like it or not that’s the law .
Third so you prefer to kill a cyclist & go to prison instead of going around , well that’s a nice attitude & it shows how really careful you are when driving .
Fourth how about when you’re driving & someone going faster than you crashes into you & tells you & I’m quoting you “Get out of my way or die”

“cyclists are allowed to ride on regular roads & when there’s no bike pass they have the right to share the road with cars , like it or not that’s the law .” NO
Like it or not bike riders have little to no common sense, I should know I used to frequently ride a mountain bike everywhere, hear that you fans of anti-offroad anorexic feeble bikes?! There’s also a law that says your not supposed to ride on the [unoccupied] sidewalk, but no [REAL] cop is going to give you a ticket for avoiding cars when you can.

Report Post »I hate it when some uneducated cyclist use the sidewalk , also when they think it‘s ok to go through red lights when there’s no traffic or skip stop signs , that’s all against the law .
The law that I was referring to is “ Sharing the road ” & it’s enforced in some places in CA .

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 11:24amI agree with wirewizard, now someone has to deal with hitting an idiot who is walking the wrong way on the road in the dark. I almost hit a hitchhiker back in 2002, I can still see it in my mind, gets my pulse up, was dark, no moon, and he was walking on the traffic side of the fog line! I am still amazed that stupid VW Golf didn’t roll.
I called the Police and they said they were sending units to respond, I was the 3rd caller the gal said.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 10:45pmI agree, if he was walking such a long distance and had down walks before he should have known the basic safety rules for walking on busy highways and streets. Wear a reflective vest, and walk towards traffic or better yet don’t walk at night on a dark highway. While I feel bad for the family loss, I feel bad for the man in SUV who will have to remember the fact that he accidently killed someone.
