Netanyahu, Christian and Jewish Groups Slam UN for Placing Church of Nativity in “Palestine”

Netanyahu, Christian and Jewish Groups Slam UN for Placing Church of Nativity in “Palestine”Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, American Christian and Jewish groups and the State Department are criticizing a decision by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to place the Church of the Nativity on its list of sites of World Heritage in Danger, and to label the church as in “Palestine.” The Bethlehem site is built above the grotto where Jesus is believed to have been born and is a hugely popular tourist destination, drawing two million visitors in 2011.

The secret vote took place during UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention in St. Petersburg, Russia on Thursday. The tally was 13-6, with two abstentions.

The Palestinian Authority’s application for recognition of Jesus’ birthplace as Palestinian is being viewed by supporters of Israel as the latest effort to circumvent peace talks with Israel and obtain recognition as a sovereign state since its failed effort last fall at the UN Security Council. UNESCO accepted Palestine as a full member last year despite US opposition and the withholding of its funding.

Evidence to the political nature of the move, the Palestinians side-stepped the normal 18-month review process and asked that the church be fast-tracked through an emergency candidacy for World Heritage status. Its application also took pains to blame Israel for the disrepair of the site – citing the political situation since the 1967 war and the alleged lack of free movement – even though the city has been under Palestinian Authority control for 17 years.

Even the three churches – Armenian, Greek Orthodox, and Roman Catholic – which are custodians of the site opposed the Palestinian application.

What’s more, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee vote ignored the opinion of its own technical advisers and its secretariat which opposed pushing the application through an emergency fast-track.

Netanyahu issued a statement Saturday night slamming the UNESCO move:

“It has been proven that UNESCO is motivated by political, not cultural, considerations.

Instead of the Palestinians carrying out steps that will advance peace, they take unilateral steps that only push peace further away.

The world needs to remember that the Church of the Nativity, which is sacred to Christianity, has been desecrated in the past by Palestinian terrorists.”

Netanyahu was referring to the violent takeover in 2002 of the Church of the Nativity by armed Palestinian gunmen belonging to Fatah’s al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades. Several dozen terrorists armed with explosives and assault weapons broke into the church and took Christian clergy, lay workers and children hostage. A five week standoff ensued at which time Israeli forces used snipers to target the gunman and avoid damaging the church, while the Palestinian kidnappers booby-trapped the church with explosives, looted gold and valuable crucifixes and according to some reports tore up Bibles for use as toilet paper.

Christians United for Israel weighed in, posting a note on its Facebook page, asking visitors to:

Hit LIKE if you are OUTRAGED that the UN now recognizes the Church of the Nativity as part of “Palestine.” SHARE if you believe Jesus’ birthplace was Israel and not “Palestine!”

Anti-Defamation League National Director Abraham Foxman released a statement criticizing the UNESCO decision. While he does not dispute it is “a treasured and sacred site that could qualify for special status,” he agrees with UNESCO’s own expert panel that it does not fit the category for emergency care:

“the UNESCO World Heritage Committee has forsaken its responsibility for protecting the world’s most important and sacred sites, and has proven to be another hackneyed, politicized body.”

Foxman says the U.S. should “re-evaluate the value of remaining a member of UNESCO.”

The AP quoted U.S. ambassador to UNESCO David Killion who released a statement saying that the United States is “profoundly disappointed” by the World Heritage committee’s decision. “This body should not be politicized,” he said:

 “The site clearly has tremendous religious and historical significance,” Killion’s statement said. “However, the emergency procedure used in this instance is reserved only for extreme cases.”

According to JTA, Reps. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), Shelley Berkley (D-N.V.) and Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) sent a letter Thursday before the vote to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to urge him to oppose the resolution, writing:

“the Palestinians clearly are not motivated by technical concerns related to historical preservation, but rather are attempting to hijack the World Heritage process to further their own political objectives.”

“We do not believe UNESCO in general or the World Heritage Committee in particular is the appropriate forum for debating such contentious issues that have little to do with historic preservation,” the lawmakers wrote.

The Times of Israel reports on reaction from the Jewish group B’nai B’rith:

B’nai B’rith International President Allan J. Jacobs said that the “Palestinians have defamed Israel, and misappropriated a Christian holy site to this end, by insinuating that the wellbeing of the Church of the Nativity is threatened by Israel.”

Daniel S. Mariaschin, B’nai B’rith Executive Vice President, added that the “Palestinians have once again successfully politicized the UN system to serve their goals, importing tension and conflict into the world body and devaluing the World Heritage process.”

Even the Palestinian reaction revealed the political goal of the church application:

“This gives hope and confidence to our people in the inevitable victory of our just cause,” said PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in a statement following the decision.

“It increases their determination to continue efforts at deepening readiness for the establishment of an independent state of Palestine, with its capital in east Jerusalem, within the 1967 borders.”

The U.S. was not part of the 21-member panel that voted on the church’s status.

    The Bethlehem Nativity Group was at our church last month. They make crosses, crucifixes, etc. for sale to help fund the Church of the Nativity. They said that because of persecution of Christians by Palestinians the number of Christians in that area have declined in the past 10 years from 20% to 2%. The way things are going the only Christians left at the church will soon be only the priests. It will become like the Greek Orthodox Churches in Greece. The Palestinians will not protect the rights of Christians in that area.

      you are exactly right. Christians are under attack in the Holy Land. I was in Israel last month and visited this Church. While Bethlehem is a Christian community its numbers are decreasing while Muslim numbers are increasing. I asked what I could do to help sustain the Christian community and other than shop in Christian stores and eat in restaurants owned by Christians while in Israel, prayer seems the only answer.

    Why in the depths of Hades would we let a bunch of jerks who have destroyed priceless historical artifacts and sites anywhere near another historical site? Have we forgotten about them going through the museum in Afghanistan and destroying statues or them blowing up the biggest statue of Budha in the world? No, this has got nothing to do with the protection of historical sites and just another excuse to put a wrench in real peace negotiations, when they know both Israel and Christians would appose it. They then can complain that Israel is the one stopping the peace.
    Personally, I’m also been worried about the Muslim Brotherhood taking over Egypt. Didn’t their new president say they would only recognize Muslim history? So, what are they going to do with all the Ancient Egyptian history? If I was working in the museum or in any of the historical sites, I’d be working to get as many things snuck out of Egypt. Too bad we can’t take the Sphynx, because if they have the same attittude as they did with the giant Budha, then goodbye Sphynx.

      Some places are valuable for their historical value. Israel is the center-piece for three of the worlds great religions. In one way or another historical events that have happened there have affected the world we live in now. It is also the only democratic state in the middle east.
      They have not been the ones causing the problem. They want to just exist, to live, to have a place where the government won’t round them up and kick them out or kill them like it has happened since the Babylonians. It’s all the Muslim countries around them that start the fights.
      It not Israel‘s fault that they don’t start the fight, but they do finish it.
      The Palestinias have been playing with the media trying to make it out that they are the victims. Launching missiles into Israel and when the Israelites respond they cry foul.
      By the way, on a quick web search, I discovered that they just discovered gas that may be one of the biggest sources in the world. They have contributed a great deal to technology, including cell phone’s and the Window OS for computers. They also contribute to medical research.
      Isreal may not have the resources that a person like yourself may recognize as valuable. But, they have contributed more than the countries around it. What have they contributed? Oil and teror.

      Alaskan Fox, since there was no Israel after 722 B.C., it could be safely argued that much of the history to which you refer, took place without Israel. You see, this is the problem. Zealots ignore reality to fulfill their wants and desires.

      Israel is in reality a theocracy, not a democracy. If you are Jewish, it is a democracy. Jewish citizens enjoy more rights than non-Jewish citizens.

      And, your fiction that it is everyone else fighting with Israel, and not Israel fighting with everyone else, ignores their own written history. Perhaps you had better re-read that Old Testament. Abraham lied to and deceived the Pharaoh. Abraham pimped his wife Sarah to the Pharaoh for wealth and power. The Pharaoh, benevolently, allowed all of the liars to leave, with their wealth and their lives. Then there is Moses. Moses attacked everyone. Perhaps you ought to read the part about how he slaughtered the Midianites, the people who once gave him safe harbor: http://shadowhistory.info/Hebrew-Bible.php

Wasn’t the cell phone invented in Israel? Isn’t the same true of instant messaging? And as for being a “theocracy”, Arab citizens in some ways have more rights. For example, every Jewish citizen, with certain exemptions, is REQUIRED to enlist in the armed forces. Arabs are not required to join. Jewish dwellings by law must be built with a bomb shelter or with access to one. Arabs are exempt.

      The Romans are the ones who renamed it Palestine when they defeated the last Israelite rebellion. A lot of Jews left and went to Europe. But a lot more stayed and have continually lived there for 3,000 years.

      What you fail to understand is there are no Palestinian people – unless you are talking about Jews.

      There were no arab palestinians before the Egyptian Arafat and to pretend otherwise is a fraud. They are thieves and squatters and apparently the only people in history to obtain squatters rights and get back territory when they lose a war that THEY started.

      Quite honestly, they should are be relocated to Jordan (that would be the orginal arab part of the two state solution) and Egypt were they came from. Those who are already in Israel and wish to stay should be allowed to, unless they cause insurrection, and then they too, should be relocated to an arab state of their choosing. There are 57 of them. There is only one Jewish state and it is, as you say, the size of the state of Delaware. Surely not too much land to claim, especially since nobody wanted it until they got there.

    The one of the reasons that Muslims want Bethlehem is to make money of the infidels that visit the site where Jesus was born and Ruth and Boaz from the Bible lived. Secondly, ratical muslims will have a greater access to peoples that they often consider free game to kidnap, torture and kill.

    UNESCO had a vote in “secret” because they knew what they were doing was on the up and up. The actions of a bunch that knew they were doing wrong and were trying to hide it. They should not have the power to decide these issues. Then is why are we part of a bunch like this?

    But then some group is voting on taking the natural resources setting offshort and giving the revenues from them to thrid world countries (bye, bye drilling off our own shore to our own benefit), then the UN wants US taxpayers to pay an additional income tax to the UN. These redistribution of wealth vultures will pick our bones until they are dry.

    @Mutiny,
    No doubt that Ron Paul hit on many more conservative issues than Romney does. Unfortunately, his foreign policy is a train wreck! Yes, I fully understand that the founders were originally against international involvement. Jefferson himself felt strongly about that…… Util our ships began getting attacked by Muslim pirates. And thus began the Tripolitan War (Barbary Coast War). I don’t think you can get much more libertarian than Thomas Jefferson. But remember, he had no problem being involved in international war, to protect this country. Paul’s stance on international involvement, is at best appalling, at worst, he would leave us defenseless.

      All this Ron Paul back & forth is nothing more than beating a dead horse. But those beating the foreign policy arguement need to examine what you’re saying. Most seem to agree that Paul’s domestic policy was right. But the detractors just couldn’t stomach his international policy, calling it a “disaster”. So their position (by default) is: we are better off w/ a president that is tough on foreign issues, even if it is the current President or the current challenger (who is a light beer version of our current CIC). So take that to the logical conclusion. Consider this:

      Hitler had no issues w/ International involvement. Yes, he was a solcialist – believing that the gov’t should direct all affairs – public & private, but he had no problems stiking his nose in foreign affairs.

      Stalin had no qualms about confronting opposition & getting involved in international affairs. Yes, he was a communist – believing there were no private affairs, the gov’t controls and owns all, but he had no issues confronting the world.

      Our liberty has been taken us & Romney will not get it back for us – can’t wait until he replaces Scalia or Thomas w/ a “Kennedy” or “Roberts”.

      You have zero clue what Ron Paul’s foreign policy stance is. Ron Paul is not for us being attacked and us do nothing. Its actually quite the opposite. If we are attacked “war is declared”. When war is declared by congress objectives and goals are set for the war. Things more than likely not in the objectives and goals of President Paul would be bomb roads and bridges then send money and troops to rebuild them. Things like give the country we are at war with medical aid and supplies might be included. Objectives like capture or kill leader of said country. Or maybe destroy certain hostile assets. After the objectives are achieved you come home. No rebuilding, no aid, no playing nice you leave them in ruins. That is how war is supposed to be fought.

      You I assume prefer the statue quo constant military global police force? Like staying in Iraq for 20+ years and losing thousands of troops. Staying in Afghanistan 10 years losing thousands of troops. Not to mention the trillions of dollars spent. Oh but hey we need to invade Syria and Iran. We have large city police forces that could take over that country and you want to send trillions of dollars and risk our troops lives for those crap holes?

      Here is a better idea. Cut them off completely. No money, aid, food, nothing. Their own people will kill overthrow them. We are not going to train the Muslim animals. Leave them alone and let them eat sand.

    The only reason to turn the church over to its enemies is to destroy the church.

    Corrupt org. to the core. Causes more consternation and harm than it’s worth. Look a Syria and it’s Palestinian position. Pot stirring taken to highest stinky level ever. Palestine, Syria, Taxing internet, gun control in America. It is farcical. Get the UN out of US. Put it some where else if it really needs to exist at all. Oh yes, I forgot the ‘jobs’ bit. One org. that can take take it’s corrupt doings some where else.

    The US is the very last place that corrupt org. should be-meddles in things it shouldn‘t and won’t take a look at things is is geared to do, makes constant trouble in NYC with it‘s ’diplomatic immunity’ crap and ruling on this and that with no real authority to do so. Years ago I had a World History Teacher-don’t think world History is taught in high school any more-too broad-that did not favor it at all. Can‘t remember her arguments to quote her but it’s made a pot-stirring mess of 99% of it’s supposed Midas touch. Tax the internet, hogwash! Look at it’s pitiful attempts regarding Syria. Put the place somewhere OUT of the US!

      Morning CATB……….I’ve read it. An amazing book and I recommend it as well. There is only one prophecy yet unfilled and that is the Rapture. I’ve been telling the unbelievers that I know to not believe what the government tells them after the Rapture occurs. I do wonder how the talking heads will try to explain it though.

    They do this because their imitate their father, the Devil who comes to steal, kill and destroy. They also imitate their father the devil who is the father of lies. So what more do you expect from them then except the ways of EVIL and HATE toward everything God loves.

      @Mutiny
      If, as you Paulbots believe, ALL politicians except Ron Paul are noecon, Bilderberg, NDAA progressives, how do you think Ron Paul could have ended the FED, made pot legal, severed ties with the UN and stopped the TSA without votes from comgress. Was he planning on becoming a dictator?

      You summed it up quite concisely. That‘s the only sensible solution and it’s not complicated.

      Ya know there was one candidate calling for us to remove ourselves from the UN.

      Its really sad to read comments in articles about stuff like this because in most ways we all agree. End the FED? Hell yeah. Get out of the UN? For sure. Quit spending money we dont have? YES! Stop the TSA? Yeah right now. Protect the Constitution? With our dying breaths.

      Ron Paul leads the charge on everyone of those issues, yet he is called crazy. Yes I know he is not the candidate but when the race was open, before the GOP fraud these things were being said. Had the establishment gotten out of the way, and Fox and talk radio been honest in coverage this race could have been different. I believe the nomination of Romney and the ultimate reelection of Obama is the final nail in the coffin for the United States. I believe you people who claim to want liberty and freedom actually shackled us. You gave us the worst candidate we could possible have.

      Romney – Pro UN.
      Romney – Pro FED.
      Romney – Pro amnesty.
      Romney – Pro national healthcare mandate. Remember he said “repeal and replace”.
      Romney – His budget doesnt cut current spending levels.
      Romney – For all but the last 5 to 7 years was pro abortion.
      Romney – Pro gun laws.
      Romney – Pro freedom stripping laws like the NDAA and Patriot Act.

      I am not saying vote for Ron Paul now. I am just asking for you to look at what you support and pick the right candidate. Quit voting for who they tell you to vote for.

      MUTINEER. Very confusing MUTINEER. You‘re basically saying don’t vote for Ron Paul now, and don’t vote for Romney and have concluded that Obama will get reelected. But you’re suggesting everyone pick the right candidate?

      It’s the weed thing, you can read all of the bad side effects in his reasoning for Paul, again, puff, and again, puff, and again, cough, and again puff, and again cough, puff, cough, puff, and again. Wait, were we talking Gary Johnson? Woo Rue Paul. Woo.

      @end

      Actually if you read my post I said dont vote for Ron Paul. Vote for the right person. This comment was more based on the lies you people keep telling yourself. You want those things yet you wont support the only candidate willing to even try to do them.

      You are typical sheep. You were told who to vote for.

      @steel

      So you are willing to support a candidate that does do anything to stop our race to bankruptcy over the fear your state could possible legalize pot? You are either ignorant to the Ron Paul stance or you like the Federal government spending money wastefully on a drug war that has only lead to more violence and corruption.

      @QP

      If Ron Paul was elected it would be because people want freedom and a return to the Constitution. The party would fall in line when the people pushed for those agendas. You cannot be this lost when it comes to politics. People fear breaking from their parties president due to the fear of backlash and no reelection. Same thing would happen with Paul has president. Oh and there are some guys in congress now similar to Paul.
