Netanyahu Cuts Israeli Immigration Ad Campaign That Upset U.S. Jews

(The Blaze/AP) — Israel’s prime minister suspended a television ad campaign aimed at luring home Israelis living in North America after it sparked an uproar among American Jews, an official said Sunday.
The government-sponsored advertisements, which were broadcast on Israeli TV and in large American markets, tried to warn Israelis that their children could lose their Israeli and Jewish identities if they were raised in the United States and not in Israel. That set off virulent opposition among American Jews, who complained that the commercials were demeaning to their Jewish identity. Al Jazeera English reports on the ads and their reaction in the U.S.:
The campaign touched on the sensitive relations between Israeli and American Jews, and the growing rift between them. Israel depends heavily on the political and financial support of American Jews, but the two sides are often at odds regarding politics and religion.
Israel’s Orthodox-run rabbinate, for instance, doesn’t always recognize marriages and conversions performed by Conservative and Reform rabbis abroad. And American Jews, who are largely politically liberal, are often ill at ease with hawkish Israeli policies and legislation.
In one of the advertisements, Israeli grandparents sit in front of the traditional Hanukkah candelabra while speaking to their granddaughter on Skype. When they ask the child to name the holiday they’re celebrating, she says “Christmas.”
In another, a napping father can‘t hear his son’s calls of “daddy” and only stirs awake when he hears the word “abba” — Hebrew for father. A third, shows an emotional Israeli woman marking Israel’s Memorial Day and her non-Israeli partner unable to relate. The adds are all capped by the slogan: “They will remain Israeli, their children won’t. Help them come home.”
Israel’s embassy in Washington and consulates in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco were inundated with protests from offended American Jews. The Jewish Federations of North America, the Anti-Defamation League and other Jewish groups condemned the ads.
Abraham Foxman, the national director for the Anti-Defamation League, called the ads “unsubtle, crude and heavy- handed.”
“I think it’s offensive. It comes out of an ignorance. Most Israelis don’t understand how American Jewish life works,” he told The Associated Press.
Faced with an uproar, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly reversed course and suspended the ads Friday.
“We are very sensitive to the concerns of the Jewish community, and when we understood that they had problems and concerns about the videos, the prime minister said to suspend the campaign,” Natanyahu spokesman Mark Regev told the Jerusalem Post.
“We are always very attentive to concerns raised by the American Jewish community,” Regev said.
It’s not the first time an Israeli government project has upset Jewish Americans.
In 2009, it yanked an ad campaign against Jewish assimilation after it outraged Jews abroad who saw the campaign as an attack on intermarriage — the common phenomenon of Jews marrying non-Jews.
Statistics show that in the U.S. — home to the largest Jewish community outside Israel — about half the marriages of Jews over the past 25 years have been mixed.
Jewish leaders have long warned that the Diaspora’s identity is eroding as more Jews marry out of faith and blend into the non-Jewish mainstream. Meanwhile, Israel has established its own, unique persona, foreign to that of Jews overseas.
Over the years, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have settled in the United States for financial and professional advancement.
Israel’s Ministry of Immigrants Absorption said the goal of its campaign was to target the “soft spots” of Israelis abroad and “their national identity.“ It denied it was trying to interfere with ”the personal choices of Jewish people in the United States or despising their way of living.”
Nachman Shai, an opposition lawmaker, said that trying to bring home Israelis was a fine cause, but not at the price of alienating American Jews.
“The ads indicate that there is an unimaginable gap between an Israeli and an American. Our whole thesis is based on a bridge and a connection. Now this ad comes and says ‘you, the Americans, will never understand us,’” he told Channel 10 TV.

I think all Jews should be proud of their heritage and want to keep it and follow it teachings and teach it to their children. The Jews are GODS CHOSEN PEOPLE and that makes them a peculiar people. We as Christians know the love that God has for the Jews and the promise that he made to their father Abraham. I wish the American Jews would see the Democrat party for what it is – a people who wants Israel to give into the evil of the terrorists Muslims! The world hates the Israel because it is beloved by the true God!

Now, I would have probably talked about keeping the faith in a different way, but these are desperate times for Israel. It’s akin probably, to a Christian shouting “Repent now!”, though true, many folks hate the words and the idea.
I am thinking that shoresh ( bridge) between the Jewish in America the Jewish in Israel is sorely needed (I am sure this already well known).
What the Prime Minister should have said is, ” This is our spiritual homeland, keep the faith and traditions as God intended-please support us and visit us Jewish Americans”.
I know, I know, lots of disagreement about this. I have been called a Zionist, people have tried to show me these awful propaganda pieces by David Duke and other groups which are being spit out all over the internet, and my Liberal friends are angry at me about gay marriage and my stand on Israel.
However, I was helping a client in the office the other day with his bill. We finished our business and as he left he turned around, and he said, “Hey, good bracelet, and thank you”. My bracelet indicates my stand for Israel. We stared at each other and smiled. Shoresh brother.

When Christians start talking about “Christian Values” and “Judeo-Christian Values” most Jews figure that you’re talking in code and it means that you will try to convert them as soon as you get the chance. Recently, some news show talked about why Jews felt “left at the altar” by GOP politics, and then someone pointed out that Jews don’t get married at an altar, Jews marry under a Chupah. It‘s the same reason that Blacks and Latinos won’t join the TeaParty in large numbers, they feel like they aren ‘t wanted when you talk about social programs and “illegal aliens”.

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 11:12pm@Treka, I’m sorry, my comments are “confused”? Yours are crytic at best and bizarre at worst. I clearly stated I am a Catholic. Why the “offense” to the TeaParty? Mostly because the TeaParty is made up of naive political neophytes who want to “take the country back” from Liberals and minorities and people who aren’t like them. Most of you make wild assumptions about Liberals that aren’t based in reality, let alone what Liberals are really like. And you make up stuff about Jews. You fail to understand how Jews can live a conservative, traditional lifestyle and yet vote for Liberals who will allow others to live as they choose, even if it is very different from their choices. Jews make up 1% of the population in the U.S., which means that most of you here have never even met one, let alone talked about who they are and what makes them tick. You’re commenting on things that you know nothing about. Beck has said multiple things that have deeply offended many American Jews, and he still claims to be “ a friend of the Jew”, which is DEEPLY offensive to all the Jews I know.
Now, I will grant that my comments could be more indepth, but I am limited to 1500 characters and most of you don’t really want to hear the whole Megillah anyway. Sorry, DESERTROSE1960, but I do know what “makes them tick.” My mother was an Irish Catholic and my father was a WASP. My mother shared the Jews’ hatred of the WASPs and up until Ronald Reagan ran for President, she was a diehard Democrat. She belonged to a Mah Jongg Club and had many Jewish friends. When I was a little boy, she started sending me to the JCC. So I HAVE talked to many different Jews and have heard what they think and feel about a great many things. I have been there many times and heard what many different Jews thought about Israel, America, the goyim, their shiksa daughter-in-laws, and what the summer they spent at a kibbutz was like. And all of it was UNFILTERED
And ironically, I have NO LOVE of Israel, I DON’T believe that Jews have been persecuted SOLELY because they were “too Jewish” as you have said. And most IRONICALLY, I am, like you have claimed to be, often insulted, hated, and even CENSORED on this website forum. Funny, isn’t it?

And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” – Deuteronomy 6:4-7
Unless you are taught by your family about a love for your country (US, Israel, or any country for that matter) your desire to stay loyal to it will diminish. Patriotism doesn’t come from the ignorant, it comes from those who are taught it. The American Jews that are “offended” by these ads are those who feel “convicted” for not staying true to their roots. If they have a deep love for Israel, they would shout, “AMEN!“ Not ”OMG! I can’t believe they would say something like that!”
It’s possible to love both countries but still stay true to the roots of your heritage. America is a country that allows you celebrate your heritage while being amongst others. As long as the roots of who you are, are not cut off, then there shouldn’t be any worries.

They are not Israelis, have never been to Israel and have only minimal interest in visiting. Being an American Jew is their roots. Thousands of generations of Jews were born and died between the destruction of the Temple in 70 C.E. and the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, their “roots” had nothing to do with the existence of Israel. Does that make them less Jewish? Certainly not, since their keeping of Jewish law got them killed out of lots of countries and forced into ghettos and the edges of society for most of that time. They were seen as “too Jewish” to be loyal to the country they were born into.

These are, in effect, licenses to private parties to carry out acts of war. We used them against the Barbary pirates. Almost immediately after the attack on the World Trade Center, Dr. Paul introduced in the 107th Congress H.R. 2076, called the September 11 Marque and Reprisal Act of 2001, authorizing holders of the letters to go after bin Laden and other Al Qaeda leaders and seize them and their property. He also voted to give President Bush authority to use the military to go after Al Qaeda, but he has been pressing for letters of marque ever since.
Dr. Paul’s bill would have covered not only past attacks but any “planned future air piratical aggressions and depredations” against us. It would have given the president discretion to pay up to $40 billion in what were, in effect, bounties for the “capture, alive or dead, of Osama bin Laden or any other al Qaeda conspirator responsible for the act of air piracy upon the United States on September 11, 2001.”
Dr. Paul said that one thing he wanted as to avoid a trillion dollar expedition when there was a simpler, constitutional approach of bringing the war to our enemy.

I understand why those in the US are upset, but they shouldn’t be. I don’t believe it was there intention to alienate them, but instead, to bring back and sustain a stronger lineage in the Jewish community. While I was living in Australia, I recall them saying something like, the very last true Tasmanian Aborigine had died , or there was only one left or something to that nature. Basically, the true lineage to the the native people of the land was at it’s end and the language, which is seems to be a phenomenon in itself, has been lost. A great number of natives to the land have lost their identity, culture, language, and genetic roots over time. The elders of the Aborigines speak of having great difficulty with the youth of today being worthy of passage of rights. But I digress, I suspect Israel is worried of the same thing. I did notice while living in Boca Raton Florida, which was primarily a Jewish community, that many of the people had some sort of I guess would be called a developmental problem or defect. Maybe it was just coincidence, and quite possibly maybe I am just completely ignorant to the reality of matters such as this, as it is only an observation, but I wondered if this wasn’t the result of, and I don’t mean this in a harmful way in any manner, but in-breeding. I mean, it has to happen if they wish to keep the authenticity in the family, but I maybe wrong.
