Nevada Approves Regulations for Driverless Cars

The State of Nevada has moved forward with legislation to begin drafting DMV regulations for “autonomous vehicles,” like Google’s upcoming Toyota Prius that can drive passengers and itself using artificial-intelligence software. Nevada is the first state to begin preliminary moves to provide roads and laws specifically for automobiles both with and without human drivers.
MSNBC:
“The bill goes into effect on March 1, 2012, and gives officials the go-ahead to work out car certification standards, insurance guidelines and other rules that would apply to robotic cars. The DMV also will mark out areas of the state where the cars can be tested.
According to the bill, these rules would apply to cars that use sensors, global positioning systems and artificial intelligence to drive “without the active intervention of a human operator.’”
Google says the artificial-intellegence software can sense anything near the car and mimic the decisions made by a human driver. The technology uses video cameras, radar sensors and a laser range finder to see other traffic, as well as detailed maps to navigate the road ahead. Google better search for some ways to pick up development for their project as Volkswagen is right on their heels, test driving a “Temporary Auto Pilot” (TAP) system that will enable a car to drive itself on highway speeds up to 80 mph.

Did you hear about the idiots that drove into a river because their GPS told them that a boat dock was a street????
In my neck of the woods, we have a lot of deer, big deer. You can watch them running across the fields toward your car, something this thing wouldn’t detect, and most likely freak out on impact.
I am upgrading to a tank if Nebraska ever allows these things.

Posted on June 30, 2011 at 8:17amI wonder if the people who come up with all of this technology ever consider the consequences it will have for mankind. I would just recommend to people that are considering having children now to limit yourselves to 1 or 2 children at the most. You see, as technology keeps expanding and taking over aspects of our lives, it also takes over and eliminates jobs. Sure, you can get a job servicing the technology, but that amounts to one person to program or service a machine that took over the jobs of 100 humans. The math will eventually catch up to us. It’s just common sense.

If I get hit, or even winged by one of these cars, I will sue the State, and Google. But it won’t stop there. I’ll sue the computer manufacturer, the programmers that wrote it, the county, the city, the car manufacturer, and most importantly the idiots that voted for and signed this.

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 2:28amDue to the nature of their business, auto dealers carry (high-priced) specialty auto insurance that covers any car, any driver. By kind courtesy of Google, we now have, apparently, “any car, NO driver.” Think of the impact on insurance rates. And who gets hit with the speeding ticket – Nevada taxpayers? Oh, GREAT job, Nevada legislators! Absolutely stellar thinking, which will just drive more folks out of the ghost town that was Las Vegas. Just the environment I want to raise my kids in.

Whether these are ‘idiot’ inventions rather depends on which human drivers they’re mimicing. Certainly there are plenty of human idiot drivers for a good comparison.
Once robotic cars become safer than human operators, cause fewer delays, allow more efficient traffic flow even with more vehicles on the road (thus reducing infrastructure spending), those old fashioned ‘steering wheel’ options will become illegal for new vehicles.
Also the conveniences of self-driven vehicles will generate huge market demand.
