Nevada GOP Moves Caucus to Settle Squabble With NH and GOP Establishment

‘Crisis’ averted.
After a contentious back and forth with New Hampshire, and some criticism from state and national Republicans that even led one candidate for president to skip the Las Vegas debate, Nevada has confirmed that the state’s caucus will be moved back to Feb. 4. The Las Vegas Sun on the state’s move back to February after originally moving their caucus to January 14 just days within of the heralded New Hampshire primary:
“‘We just basically want to be the adults in the room here,’ Nevada GOP chairwoman Amy Tarkanian said. ‘This has turned into a huge debacle… It’s unnecessary, it’s turned into a distraction.’
‘We will be the good guys in the end because we don’t need to be New Hampshire’s piñata,’ she said.
By making the switch, Nevada will now be holding its caucuses four days after Florida holds its primaries on Jan. 31. But by making the switch, Nevada remains the first electoral contest in the West, and gets its full complement of delegates back, as well as a promise from the Republican National Committee that the state will have top-priority seats at the convention, as well as ‘the best hotel,’ Tarkanian said.”
Nevada had originally set its primary to January 14 after Florida had moved their primary ahead of Nevada’s original caucus date. The Nevada move, however, interfered with a New Hampshire state law that insists no other state hold its primary or caucus within seven days of the New Hampshire contest. The New Hampshire primary was planned for January 10, but the state had threatened to move that date to December if Nevada did not accomodate. With Nevada’s move now back to February, the Silver State caucus is still behind Florida, Iowa and New Hampshire primaries.
The Sun writes that after the national rebuke to the orignal January move, Nevada GOP officials voted to move the date back to February but without first expressing some distaste for their fellow state GOP leaders:
“‘All of this started with Florida and their ego problem,’ said national committeewoman Heidi Smith, who said she would personally recommend any state who breaks the RNC’s rules in the future loses two-thirds of their delegates, gets no place to stay during the party convention, and loses their VIP passes.”
POLITICO writes that half the Republican field pledged to boycott the Nevada caucuses if they remained on Jan. 14, and that the last straw came when RNC Chairman Reince Priebus delivered the message, both in person and in writing, that Nevada needed to move to February. Presidential candidate Jon Huntsman, former governor of nearby Utah, had already boycotted the Las Vegas debate last week.
“This change ensures that Nevada retains its prominent national role, as the first contest in the West and it restores Nevada’s full slate of delegates to the Republican National Convention,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement in regards to the caucus move. “With this decision Nevada will receive the attention it deserves, and the national spotlight will focus clearly on the devastating effects that President Obama’s economic policies have had on the Silver State.”
Priebus noted in his letter to Tarkanian Thursday, that the move will indeed allow state officials priority for VIP suites and hotels in Tampa.

Posted on October 24, 2011 at 8:49amIt’s just proof that the GOP is corrupt as the democrats and we need a tea party national convention to decide who we want to run against Obama. I feel the reason they are trying to do this sooner is so no other candidate can gain ground on Romney in the polls so when they pick him it seems like everyone wanted him. The GOP is going to pick Romney and it seems to me that the majority doesn’t want him but, will probably end up voting for him because they are afraid of splitting the vote and Obama getting back in.

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 7:32pmPrimaries are so 1990. Candidates for President have absolutely no reason to do bus or train tours. They have the Internet and ALL PRIMARIES SHOULD BEHELD ON THE SAME DAY IN EVERY STATE.
Apologies for the yelling, but I am extremely upset because my only voice is that it will be against our President Obama. The GOP power brokers will eliminate any legitimate contender after two or three states make them irrelevant.
We don’t need earlier and earlier primaries. Candidates don’t need to make personal appearances to sway the public. They should be held close to the date of the national convention.

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 7:06pmI used to live in Reno- and I understand John Huntsman boycotted the debate in Vegas because of this. He’d best be careful- his support may go from almost nothing to absolutely nothing if he keeps this up! Nevadans know Huntsman for the RINO he is- maybe that had something to do with his protests. Love Nevada, consider it “home”. However, NH has 4 electoral votes, Nevada 6. Perhaps holding the first primary in a state with a bigger population might be a good idea.

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 11:40amThis really is stupid… NH has 4 votes and Nevada has 6… Kinda pails in comparison to California, Texas, or for that matter, Georgia or North Carolina… What does it really matter what these two states do or what they think? They could be first or last and they are no more than a drop in the bucket… I think this is why Herman Cain really hasn’t been there too much… I’ll bet he wins Georgia!!! I’ll be willing to bet he wins the election in 2012!!! Any takers???

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 9:44pmIt’s in the NH state Constitution that they hold the first primary, and that there is a week between it and any other similar votes. So no matter what NH will always move it’s primary to be first, it’s the state law. Like it or not they aren’t going to change their state Constitution for another state(s).

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 10:36amyou want to change it then get elected as a delegate and go to the convention and change the rules. If the new Hampshire law conflicts take away their delegates. The party chooses their rules not the state governments. no delegates to win means no one campaigns there. No one campaigning there means no money national political spent in that state.

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 9:08amI’m disgusted by the GOP primary process. New Hampshire and Iowa get special influence in deciding which candidate gets to become the runner. There is such an east coast bias in these elections that I think the whole process should be scrapped. Ronald Reagan was a miracle to have been selected and since that time the GOP has put things in place to keep the blueblood Republicans secure. I doubt a conservative will EVER be selected. At best we will get someone posing as a conservative ala McCain or Dole or Boyner. The Republican parties in most states allow open elections so the Democrats can swap parties and water down the candidates to get a liberal RHINO in place. The Republicans have done NOTHING to ensure that primaries are sanitized for voter fraud with picture ID requirements, ballot checks, etc. to give confidence in the system. And when the general election comes they do nothing about the ACORN scams, Black Panther intimidation and absentee ballot fraud. ALSO they have done NOTHING in the last five elections about military absentee ballots. Thousands of votes cast by military members were never voiced because of Democrat shinnanegans. THE LEADERSHIP OF THE GOP IS PATHETIC. Nevada got ripped off in my view—-plain and simple.

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 12:09amWhat gives New Hampshire and Iowa the right to decide the Presidential candidate? I say rotate the primaries so that Utah is the first next time, instead of thirty days after the 49th primary.
And my Nevada GOP capitulated to this rigged system. New Hampshire has no right to force its laws on the rest of us.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 8:16pmWe in NH were not dictating to anyone. We are first in the nation, period. It started a long time ago to make sure we as a small state got to get counted. At this point, we are unlike any other state in the nation. We care about our politics. Each town here pays their own way. Unlike other states who get money via state and Feds, we pay our own teachers, firemen, and police in each city. We do not get subsidies for it. If the town I live in wants a new library, we pony up the money – us – not the next town or county over. We take politics seriously because each election means something to our wallets. Some other state might spend a lot of money thinking the Feds will make up the difference in shortfall. We do not. My town almost lost 2 cops & 1 fireman during the budget meetings. We chose to raise the money to solve the problem. We care about where we stand for a reason – our voice is heard. It would not be lost in the middle of the pack. Look at the record, we have a darn good record picking presidents. There is a reason why it is said, “As goes New Hampshire, so goes the nation.” We care. Politics, in this state, is serious. Get the same record and you can talk about us getting over ourselves.

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 9:01pmAs it should be for every state in the nation; to pay their own way for everything. the whole federal system is a scam… states are our little countries who all agree to follow the constitution. it’s that simple… the federal system shouldn’t even exist techincally, even if we all purchase the same things.. that doesn’t matter. we all rent appartments, houses, buy houses, etc… should the feds do it for us? come on… just because we all do something doesn’t mean it should be in federal hands… that is TOO far out of reach… it should Always be in Our hands… right now you COULD go to your governors house.. but it’s impossible to go to the Feds. each state should pay for their representatives to represent them in DC. Room, Board, Supplies, etc… it shouldn’t be taken out of a “federal fund”, why should all of the states put their funds in a pot and then split them back up to the people for their salaries? that makes 0 sense. the states can just pay for them, cut out the middleman…

Posted on October 22, 2011 at 5:45pmWhen I was younger I thought people in power were there because they were smarter, better educated and able to handle situations mere mortals like me would have trouble with. Now that I am older, I see I was quite mistaken. They are there because of money and power. Money and power do not make someone smarter or more capable. What it does is make them THINK they are smarter and more capable, causing a great divide between themselves (the elites) and the mere mortals whom they consider to be “igonrant.” We are far from ignorant. We HAVE however, been asleep. But we are waking up. There need to be term limits put in place for all of Congress, AND for the Supreme Court. Only when that has been accomplished will the people be taken seriously. Until then, they get away with whatever they want to do.

Now I find out that it’s all about gerrymandering, corruption, and money. We have to vote for some of the biggest slimeballs on the face of the planet just because we know the other guy is worse. Look at Barney Frank and and Chris Dodd. (well, after Chris Dodd got caught in that big lie about the banker bonuses he finally had to get out) Even Newt Gingrich is still a contender after cheating on his sick wife. Sure, he would probably make a great president, but I sure don’t want to vote for the dirtbag. I want to have a great president who I WANT to vote for. I like Herman Cain. So far he seems to be an honorable man, with a strong background in business. Plus, wouldn’t it be great for the Republicans to elect the first Black president in the US?
