New ‘Avatar’ Intro Shows Earth in Shambles From Pollution

New Avatar Intro Shows Earth in Shambles From PollutionLOS ANGELES (AP) — James Cameron is giving “Avatar” a fresh start.

Cameron unveiled a new opening scene Tuesday for an extended cut of his sci-fi blockbuster due out Nov. 16 on DVD and Blu-ray disc, the sequence offering a glimpse of life on crowded, polluted 22nd century Earth, where city dwellers are bombarded by digital ads and wear masks for protection from the foul air.

The sequence Cameron showed reporters depicts the dreary existence of his hero, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), before he’s invited to join the Avatar program on the distant moon Pandora.

An ex-Marine now in a wheelchair, Jake lives in a tiny, seedy room and hangs around boozing it up at a bar, where he starts a fight — but for a good cause. Jake takes on a guy who had been slapping a woman around.

Cameron said he decided to cut that opening from last year’s theatrical release despite how “great that sequence of scenes is for his character, and showing how even though he’s paralyzed, he’s not a victim. He’s still a warrior. He’s a stubborn, scrappy, brawling guy, but also one with a conscience and a sense of justice.”

But Cameron said audiences eventually would find that out about Jake once he gets into action among the native Na’vi on Pandora. He said he dropped the opening on Earth to step up the pacing and land viewers more quickly on Pandora, where Jake falls for Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana).

“The guiding principle for me was the movie doesn’t really start until we meet Neytiri,” Cameron said. “It’s about their relationship and where that relationship takes him. So every minute that we delayed meeting her we looked at with extra scrutiny.”

But for this latest video release, Cameron and producer Jon Landau wanted to offer something fresh.

“We didn’t want to start the movie with something people had seen before,” Landau said. “Right when people start to watch it, they know they’re getting something new, and it’s a whole new opening.”

The extended home-video cut runs 16 minutes longer than the original theatrical version of “Avatar,” the biggest modern blockbuster with $2.8 billion at the box office worldwide.

The three-disc DVD and Blu-ray release also includes the theatrical version and another extended cut, running eight minutes longer than the original, that was released in theaters in August.

The set also packs 45 minutes of deleted scenes, a feature-length documentary about “Avatar” and 17 short segments examining the technology, music, stunts and other elements of the film.

The Hollywood propaganda machine has become absolutely nauseating. Why won‘t they portray the great American spirit or inspire an individual’s potential? That would increase their value to the human condition. Instead, they squander their own potential.

If only James Cameron would practice what he preaches just like the rest of the eco nuts out there. Spewing their crap just like the President. We haven’t been on this earth long enough to know what type of impact that we have had on this earth. Has anyone noticed all the eco commercials that has been on the media lately. Especially the Poet.com commercials. They are so full of it. The eco’s talk about green all the time. But they use oil and gas just like the rest of us.

Cameron has some serious psych issues with environment. Seems like a hollyweird fear monger. This is a bad way to influence the audience for monetary gain. He should do one that enhances a Johnny Appleseed character instead by planting CO2 hungry trees. Now that’s a concept.

Avatar made the Na’vi resemble the Native Americans but forgot to show the Native Americans fought with each other, just as brutally, if not more brutal, than everyone else in the world. I love the way Native Americans lived but to believe they weren’t a warring people, shows a great lack oh history.

Actually, I enjoyed the movie, and didn’t get the memo on the anti-whatever message. Did Mr. Cameron keep his profits or share them with the less fortunate? That will do more to tell you if he is truly a capitalist, or a socialist. It’s not so hard for me to believe that a Marine would fight for what he believes in, wouldn‘t take what wasn’t rightfully his and do his best to do the right thing to the best of his ability.

On the other hand, if you want to entertain, make a movie–if you want to preach, find a pulpit.

I agree, i liked the movie too. Then Cameron came out and made that fun statement that basically the movie is anti war and save mother earth, it ruined it for me.

I Pledge Allegiance To The Earth. Animals are more important than humans. Why save human life when we can save the bunnies? Lets De-develop the United States! Lets spread the wealth! We do not make anything in the U.S. any more. China is becoming like the old U.S. and we are becoming like old communist China. I guess this is what Americans want now. We will be slaves to the politicians.

hollywood should base themselves in China or Russia anymore. hollywood is no longer a resemblance of America anymore. Many of today’s celebrities portray some sort of hatred toward America in my view. After a few years of paying more and more attention you can’t help but notice that 90% of all celebrities are infatuated Democrats. I could never understand this since Democrats love to tax the rich so much. I also notice how all celebrities promote to help third world countries more than Americans suffering in the very country that made them who they are. I would like to see especially the musical celebrities have a “We are America” “We are A free Nation” Lets rebuild A Free America Tour..Nope..Instead.. “We are The World”… “We Are the New World Order”.. We are The ones who work for the shadow government to brainwash you through our celebrity…

Avatar was nothing more than liberal propaganda with the sole purpose of indoctrinating our children with false ideas of religion, community and the environment. One of the first things the new Republican/TP legislature must do is eliminate or severely restrict the power the so called “Environmental Protection Agency.” This agency is a huge strain on our budget and what have they ever done? Eliminated American jobs, that‘s what they’ve done! China and India don’t have a cost prohibitive restrictions on disposing of manufacturing byproducts, so why should we? This is not the place of government, but rather the free market. Each of us, all Americans, are better off if we eliminate government interference and let companies thrive. Allow them, please!, to do the right thing by every single citizen of the United States, the greatest country in the world.

OSHA? Get rid of it. Have you seen the volumes of OSHA regulations of every single industry in the United States? Have those regulations every saved a single life or prevented health problems? The answer is no. If you disagree, would you please take the time to give a single example?

You are kidding, right? Both countries are trashed due to unregulated dumping. I had to wear a damn mask just to breath in China. India has a smell you will not soon forget. Go see for yourself and you will change that tune.

The minute James Cameron gives up every penny he made on Avatar is the minute he stops being a fraud. He makes a tree hugging anti-capitalist movie in order to make millions in the free markey system? Nothing more than pandering to the wackos. No different than Michael Moore.

Bad film, overall. “The big, nasty American humans are awful savages, destroying the lush planet and its exotic peoples!” Give me a break, it was clear that there was a secret agenda pushed through the film behind the whole blue-people thingamajig.
