New Billboards Tout Rainbow Trees for ‘Gayer’ Christmas

Would it be okay to have billboards advertising rainbow hajibs for a “gayer” Ramadan? How long would a billboard like that last in Los Angeles?
But it seems to be a-okay to if we’re talking about Christianity. The Treetopia web site is ramping up their advertising in Los Angeles:
It might seem to be a bit of gamble for a company built around the celebration of central date on the Christian calendar to make this kind of marketing play. Not every Christian denomination will be okay with this. The Huffington Post post is hinting that “Traditional Marriage” activists may start a “ballot measure for a ‘Traditional Christmas!’” They assess the business strategy this way:
Do we need to associate everything rainbow-colored with sexuality? Surely some queer households would find the tree gaudy, while hetero Science Guy Bill Nye (Rick Warren officiated his wedding) would undoubtedly get a kick out of it. On the other hand, it’s assuring that a business in California has confidence the slogan will be positively perceived.
Not everyone in the gay community will in positive perception mode. This one calls the tree “dreadful.” But notes that the “proud sobbing trees” are available for $229.
How’s this playing in the advertising community? We turn to AdFreak:
The trees are kind of cool, but they lose a little something in their garishness. I mean, the whole point of a Christmas tree is covering it with lights and ribbon and fragile ornaments, none of which will look as impressive on a multicolored tree. I’m also not sure whether to laugh at their cheeky modernizing of “gay,” which meant something different in old Christmas carols, or groan at their pandering to the broadest possible stereotype of homosexuals. (Is there a straight version with bandolier tinseland pants instead of a tree skirt?)
Customers seem happy. Or customer anyway. Right now there is only one “awesome” customer review:
Now in case you think that Treetopia is not really sending a message about religious convictions, let’s take a look at the product description on the web site. It comes in the form a confessional letter from “I Just a Rainbow Tree”:
My first home was in a Vacation Bible School classroom where the students were learning all about Noah‘s Ark and God’s promise to never again destroy the earth… But one day the new minister’s wife ran in screaming, “That tree is a bad influence on my little boy!!!” She pointed a shaking finger at me, and two burly members of the congregation picked me up and put me in a closet-like box. I didn’t understand what the uproar was about. After all, I’m Just a Rainbow Tree.
A few months and a cross country trek later, those closet doors were thrown open and I alighted onto the floor of a thrift store in San Francisco. A crowd gathered around; their “oohs” and “aahs” and “Fabulous!” escalated until they hoisted me onto their shoulders. I was paraded up and down Castro Street, and soon a line formed behind me as we sang “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. I was so overwhelmed by the immediate acceptance and love that I just burst into tears.
I‘m betting we’ll be waiting awhile for the “I’m Just a Rainbow Hajib.”

Posted on November 19, 2010 at 5:42amYeah–gay‘s can’t participate in Christmas! That holiday belongs to Christians–the Federal government should pass a law requiring all religious faiths, except Christianity to wear somber colors as though mourning on Christmas.

Posted on November 19, 2010 at 3:25amI love the fact that it’s “Christmas” tree if its demeaning (really to everyone) but if its for anything else its “holiday”.Also what the hell does being gay or Christmas for that matter have anything to do with buying what is probably that maunfacturer’s last chance to unload what is probably a factory mess up of on a really stupid (probably lib) consumer?
Report Post »Christmas is about good will towards everyone, family, friends and of course Jesus!
Not about ridiculously colored fake tree which is some how supposed to represent someone’s sexual preference which in itself is vulgar (I don‘t want to know what anyone is into that’s private information) especially on a major religious holiday with that twisted mentally you could literally start making trees which represent any sexual preference for example a lets say a red tree that represents ones preference for big breasted girls… pretty stupid no?

Posted on November 19, 2010 at 11:20amLudwika you are so right. Most of the gay people I know have exquisite taste and would never think of purchasing such an atrocity. I guess when people get desperate to sell something they will do anything. The tree reminds me of the silver Christmas tree my mother bought one year because it was cheaper than the green tree. It had a light that changed the tree to different colors (red, blue, green & clear) everyone really liked it, so who knows what people will buy, but please don’t target people you apparently know nothing about. By the way, I’m straight, but I love gays; most are loving, intelligent, talented people. May God Bless.

Posted on November 19, 2010 at 3:04amI do find it interesting… the rainbow. It never hit me this way before, but maybe it is because it has now suddenly been attached to a symbol that has been identified with Christmas for so long. (Yes, I know it was originally a pagan symbol that was Chrisianized….but the pine tree does carry over with its symbolism.)
The rainbow was the symbol that God gave to man after the Great Flood. God had just destroyed the earth because of all of the evil on the earth. He promised Noah that the rainbow would be the symbol of a promise to never again flood the entire earth. The homosexual movement has stolen this symbol of this promise of God’s mercy.
Homosexuality is condemned in the bible as a sinful life style. Taking on the symbol of God‘s promise to support something that God in the bible condemns has sinful could almost be seen as a pretty bold stance by God’s people…. a sort of “in your face” statement to God that “You promised not to flood the earth again” . Of course the promise was only that he would not “flood” the whole world again. The promise said nothing about other actions by God when man displeases God.
Perhaps we need to look at the “gay” rainbow with different eyes…eyes that remind us that God can be a wrathful God when man violates God’s law. Perhaps we need to see the “gay” rainbow, not as a statement of Gay pride, but as what God gave it to us for… a reminder of His power and yes, his wrath when man abandons God’s ways.

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 2:44amstaythecourse: I admire and agree with your response and reminder of God‘s wrath on humans that reject God’s ways. However, it is not homosexuality that is condemned in scripture. A close look at the Hebrew context and Greek in the New Testament clearly shows that sodomy is the real issue here, and that can be both heterosexual or homosexual (not to mention the fact that lesbianism is never discussed in scripture). English translations are misleading. I have studied Koine Greek and have done research and translation from Greek to English of these New Testament passages. Paul uses obscure language and not terminology typically associated with homosexuality in his time. It is clearly an act that is condemned, and for good reason (just look at the diseases caused by sodomy–if you want to get a little freaked out). It is the same reason many foods are forbidden in Leviticus. These days science is showing the potential dangers of consuming the foods forbidden in Leviticus. It’s really quite fascinating that these ancient people knew not to consume certain foods, which science shows to be unhealthy today. I’m a firm believer that God wants His people to be healthy and survive, which is why certain acts are forbidden in scripture and could be considered an “abomination.”

Posted on November 19, 2010 at 1:39amI’m a gay man and even I believe that this is ridiculous. It’s disgusting to see these sorts of things in public and I find it demeaning as a human being, not to mention in poor taste as it relates to Christmas. The description for the tree is just terrible and I’d be ashamed if I had written that; it’s rife with tired stereotypes and negative comments. And what idiot in his right mind thinks a rainbow coloured tree is the way to go eh? If they’re attempting to target anyone with taste they appeared to have failed miserably.

Understood, Christ was born sometime in the late spring to early summer when the shepherds were in the fields.
Report Post »Diogenes2912
Posted on November 20, 2010 at 2:28amGood point Snowleopard! I’m glad there are those out there that are aware of the time frame of the shepherds in the fields. Yes, betterdays, early Christians did hijack a pagan holiday to commemorate the Lord’s birth as a form of Christian apologetics. After all, Jesus was the ultimate “Greek god”, since he changed water into wine (Dionysus), fed the 5,000 with bread (Demeter), and we celebrate his birth on December 25th (Asclepius AND Helios-both sons of God, “born” on December 25th). He also was killed and was raised from the dead (Dionysus-as well as celebrating his remembrance with wine and bread–Dionysus). Many Christian holidays are on dates that correspond to pagan holidays (some, of course, are related to Jewish holidays). To this day you can see ancient graffiti on the ruins of the temple of Asclepius in ancient Corinth that states “Asclepius heals the body, but Jesus heals the body and the soul” (written in Greek). So, although some may be upset about the “rainbow tree”, let’s remember that the tree also comes from a pagan festival celebrating new life (often in the form of sexual promiscuity and acts), and is not, in itself, Christian. Nonetheless, for those of us that are Christian, let us celebrate the dawn of salvation in the birth of the only hope for this world, and let those that mock us pave their way to judgment, as we will all face at the end of time.

Posted on November 20, 2010 at 12:14pmI am glad that more people are aware of the true roots of Christmas. Christmas trees have nothing to do with Jesus and the gays can have the tree for all I care. Most people are unaware that the 3 wise men did not get to Jesus until he was around a year old and they came to Mary and the baby Jesus in the “house”, not the stable. The bible is very simple and clear about this. Even the nativity was portrayed incorrectly.
