Book No Higher Power: Catholic Church Paid to Send Obama to Alinsky Founded Groups Training | ReceiptA new book by conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly and American Spectator journalist George Neumayr exposes never-before-seen documents that purportedly show that the Catholic Church supported, and gave monies to, Barack Obama in the 1980s to attend a community organizing training with the Saul Alinsky-founded Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF). Additionally, in “No Higher Power,” the authors highlight other problematic funding and allegiances between the Church and ultra-liberal causes.

It’s no secret that the left has learned the ropes of using faith and religion for political gain. For years, liberals lamented conservatives’ close allegiance with Christian leaders. But now, in a change of course, they seem to be revving up the engagement and infiltration of faith communities in an effort to harness political power.

Progressive evangelicals, for instance, have a bizarre history of taking funding from far-left billionaire George Soros, an atheist (we’ve covered liberal evangelical groups and their controversial stances and ties here, here and here). Many groups and churches, too, have joined in on leftist calls for social justice, among other Democratic-laden sentiment.

While gaining in its prevalence, this systematic exploitation of religion by liberals who seek to use the cohesive forces of belief to progress political agendas is nothing new. Segments of the Catholic Church, for example, have been frequently accused of being sympathetic to — and even funding — leftist activities. Most recently, the Bishops, themselves, have accused nuns of liberal inclinations and separating from Church doctrine. But the ties and issues seem to go far beyond the nuns.

In “No Higher Power,” Schlafly and Neumayr focus upon Obama’s “war on religious freedom,” as the book puts it. Since the announcement of his controversial contraceptive mandate, many have claimed that the president and his administration have turned hostile towards people of faith (although there were other benchmarks, including his attack on the ministerial exemption and an alleged apathy toward the faith community that some called out as earlier warning signs).

Considering Obama’s ongoing stalemate with Catholic leaders, though, there are some past connections that are worth noting. TheBlaze secured an exclusive excerpt from Chapter 6 of the book, where the aforementioned documents seem to show that the Catholic Church funded Obama’s IAF trip. On the surface, this may seem benign, but connecting the dots showcases what the authors contend is further evidence of leftist infiltration into the Church.

Let’s start with the IAF, the organization that put on the training session that the Church purportedly paid to send Obama to. Previously, we have delved deeply into IAF and its use of faith to capture for political gain. The infamous, ultra-left group was founded back in 1940 by Alinsky, the father of community organizing. As we’ve reported, IAF, which is still very active today, is known for using religion as an adhesive force to bring individuals together in support of Democratic principles and candidates.

Naturally, there’s some irony considering that the Catholic Church allegedly paid to send Obama to a far-leftist training, specifically when it comes to the current state of affairs between the president and bishops. Here’s an exclusive portion of the book that delves into the support that Obama allegedly received from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), an arm of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:

In the 1980s, the Catholic archdiocese of Chicago contributed to the training of Obama in the very Alinskyite radicalism that would culminate in such anti-religious measures as the HHS mandate. In fact, in the course of writing this book, we met a source who once had access to copies of documents from the archives of the Chicago archdiocese. This source supplied us with never-before-published copies of invoices, checks, and letters that confirm the Church’s support for the man who would one day seek to destroy its religious freedom.

In a series of appendices, we have reproduced the check and invoice showing that the archdiocese of Chicago paid for Obama’s plane trip to a conference in Los Angeles run by the Industrial Areas Foundation, the community organizing group founded by Alinsky.

TheBlaze has secured the alleged documents, which the book says were given to the authors by someone who had access to Church archives and are also presented in the appendix of “No Higher Power.” In the 1980s, a time during which Obama was on staff with Developing Communities Project, an off-shoot of the Calumet Community Religious Conference, the group received support from the CCHD. Below, see a letter on CCRC letterhead that is signed by Obama; in it, he mentions an “IAF training in Los Angeles” and seeks a reimbursement for his travels:

Then, a follow-up note shows a memorandum from the Campaign for Human Development (the name given to the group before “Catholic” was later added in), which confirms a travel payment to the then-community organizer:

While some may dismiss this as an odd or one-time affair, it seems Alinsky had extensive ties to the Church (specifically CCHD), as he attempted to use religion — much like the left is today — to harness the political power of a mass group of people tied together by common belief. Schlafly and Neumayr continue, providing more on this allegedly cozy relationship between Alinsky and Church officials:

Alinsky had always targeted churches for radical infiltration, and to a certain degree he succeeded. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) was the Alinskyite branch of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops which had offices in dioceses across the country. It was founded in 1969 by priests and bishops close to Saul Alinsky, such as Monsignor John Egan, who sat on Alinsky’s Industrial Areas Foundation board. The group was originally called the Campaign for Human Development, with “Catholic” added later as its socialist work began to draw criticism. 

Alinsky had initially won favor with some in the Archdiocese of Chicago by appearing to be an advocate of justice for the poor. In the 1950s, in fact, Alinsky received tens of thousands of dollars from the Church to “study” poverty and racism.

This isn’t the first time CCHD has been exposed as a leftist arm of the Church. And a travel reimbursement is far from the only example of Catholic monies going toward far leftist causes. In 2011, in a column for First Things, Fr. Val J. Peter also delved into these issues, writing that it may, indeed, be time for the CCHD to be shuttered. Considering some of the other funding allegations written up by Schlafly and Neumayr, it‘s no wonder why some have grave concerns about the group’s continued existence (hint: excessive financial ties to ACORN):

Indeed, from 1998-2008, CCHD gave $7.3 million of Catholic-donated money to the now notorious ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, a radical leftist organization that supported Barack Obama’s brand of “community organizing.” In 2007 alone, CCHD increased its support of ACORN, giving ACORN thirty-seven grants totally $1,037,000. During 2007-2008, ACORN and its affiliated organizations were aggressively registering what they claimed were 1.3 million poor people to vote. ACORN focused on new registrations in the key toss-up states of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

CCHD knew exactly how ACORN spent its money. CCHD’s executive director, Ralph McCloud, admitted to Catholic News Service that “some of the funds that the Catholic Campaign contributed to ACORN in the past undoubtedly were used for voter registration drives.”

Even though the pro-Obama political activity of ACORN had been widely reported, and even though employees of ACORN and affiliated organizations like Project Vote had either been indicted or convicted of submitting false voter registration forms in fourteen states, CCHD, in June 2008, approved grants of $113 million to forty local ACORN affiliates for the cycle beginning July 1, 2008. Those grants were ratified by the United States Conference of Bishops at its June 2008 meting.

Under press scrutiny and backlash from members of the laity, the CCHD-ACORN relationship suddenly became too embarrassing for the bishops to ignore, and CCHD announced it was suspending (not canceling) the 2008 grants.

Considering the Catholic Church’s ongoing issues with the Obama administration, these ties are fascinating. Furthermore, the ongoing accusations being thrown at nuns by the bishops are also noteworthy. While there is a fear that leftist views have been too fervently embraced by the sisters, it seems there may also be a need to look further into other facets of the Church (at least the CCHD) as well.

      ITS NOT YOUR GRANDFATHER’S CHURCH ANYMORE.

      Its not any surprise that the US Catholic Church would support communists. It only confirms suspicions of why the US Church remained neutral over the Pro-Life fight and supported Obamacare even though it was known that Obamacare would mandate abortion, birth control and death panels. Priests who speak out get they parishes shut down or get transferred to dying parishes. Bishop Fulton J. Sheen spoke 30 years ago of where he saw the US Church going and was worried of what was going to happen. Well its not your father’s Church anymore.

      The Catholic Church would not even pay a Catholic to attend something like this but would expect the Catholic to pay for it themselves or find a sponsor. The US Church is selling off property everywhere and many wounder if the money is being given to Democrats.

      The appeal to help the poor and eliminate poverty has been the shield that many of these players have hidden behind.
      That Priest in Chicago, Father Michael Pfleger is an example of a Communist/acting Priest. He doesn’t realize that GOD gave us FREE CHOICE in order for us to grow our Character. Communism doesn’t build character. It appeals to the most immature level of us. It DENIES GOD. But the “hook” is the help the poor. We all want to HELP THE POOR, but Communism is NOT the way to do it.
      So, I’m not at all surprised that any organization in CHICAGO would manipulate any source of money for their misbegotten goals for communistic purposes.
      Also, they are very patient and cunning in trying to destroy ANY OBSTACLE that could rise up against them.
      Consider that 26% of the USA Population is Catholic. That’s over 93 M people!! This would be the FIRST OBSTACLE that serious Communist/Marxists/Socialist (and ISLAMIC CLERICS) would want to come against. IF they can use anything against us (I’m Catholic) you can bet your boots they will.
      What this does show me is that OBAMA has always been a COMMUNIST.

      The Chicago Diocese supports Father Pfleger so why not Obama since they are both communists. How far would the Catholic Church lower its standards of belief to reach out to the poorest citizens of Sodom and Gomorra? Since this could only be hypothetical, we’ll never know but my guess is that there would have been a Father Pfleger (and Obama) there too. If the citizens of Chicago South Side were of the worker bee class and contributed to a better life for their children, Father Pfleger (and Obama) would curse them and go somewhere else.

      Glenn Beck always said if you hear the words social justice in a church, run the other way. The Catholic Church does a lot of good in the world, but they are far too progressive when it comes to immigration. They are allowing Muslims to inflitrate in the name of tolerance also, giving in to dhimmitude. I hope that the outrage against the forced coverage of abortifascent drugs will wake up the members of the Church, and unite them against the dictator we have in office.

      Chicago’s Catholic Archdiocese is far from the common Catholic Church, more in line with the “Social Justice” ideology of “Liberation Theology”. I‘m certain you’ve all read my rants Liberation movement of Ernesto Che Guevara that gave us Cuba’s Fidel Castro. It is no faith unless you consider Marxist Ideology a faith and was defamed by the Roman Catholic Church. I know they are not the best on morals of late but they sure know Communism when they see it. Which is why Marxist have waged war on the Catholic Church for so long. Che tried to subvert it with Liberation in South and Central America and now they’ve infiltrated it with those like Michael Pfleger, John Gehring, and Jim Wallace other George Soro’s funded subversive influence

      I guess more conservative and libertarian believers need to start going to church. I got fed up with organized religion years ago because of the silly crap that goes on which has nothing to do w/ worship and knowledge of the scriptures. I found I learned more at home, alone, with the bible. Anyway… I quit attending regularly years ago, only go occasionally and if I do go it’s not always to the same one. I read/study scriptures and pray daily, and study all kinds of extra-biblical books, but…

      it looks like people such as myself, need to start going again, if for no other reason, simply to fight this kind of infiltration that’s ruining many segments of our society and our country at large.

      This is the Church in Chicago, think the likes of Father Michael Pfleger. He is a lose canon within the Church. The Church does not claim perfection, Mrs. Schlafly. There is no other major entity in the world to counter the rampant secularism of today. Is this your attempt to help Barry attack and dismantle the Church?

      You are correct about the RCC being infiltrated, but I think they are finally starting to get a clue. In 2008, our church parking lot was full of Obama stickers, now it’s full of Romney stickers with no Obama stickers in sight and a couple of people even come to mass in their Ron Paul T-shirts.

      It just warms the heart!

      The Catholic church also has been linked to assisting the Nazi’s back in world war 2, so needless to say they are sympathetic to the far Left and Socialism. They have also been active in sanctuaries for illegal immigrants and criminals. That‘s not to say that all priest’s agree with this as many have conservative beliefs or interpretative differences within the church.

    Unfortunately liberals in the Catholic Church have done terrible damage. Catholics (in the pew) will be blamed for this–even though they were unaware of it, would not have supported it, and took no part in it. I would like to see those that were responsible held accountable and discharged! Once again the Church has a huge “house cleaning” job ahead!!

      In our depressed economy, many Catholic parishes are starting big construction projects. I now suspect that most of the secretly budgeted money is being skimmed off and donated to the Democrat-Communist. In my parish three years ago, our Pastor supported the congregations rejection of a big spending plan. He was transferred out a month later. Now three years later we are told that the Church is ready to break ground and we will be expected to pay for this unknown expenditure that we can all be “proud of.” I susspect that they want to fix up our church building so it can be sold.

      Much like the government, things get out of control and then can equalize. The question now is how much time to we have for these things to swing the other way. Evil has always existed, when there is goodness, evil will rear it’s ugly head wherever that may be. It will not matter, it can be simplified easily, “good” will always be at war with evil. War began with the creation of man, to all peaceniks– anyone who says war should not exis,t really does not have a clear picture of the world. It is more about free will, and which path you choose, and how you will be judged in the final place we reside!

    In Rules for Radicals Saul Alinsky says that the Catholic Church was the prime target for infiltration. Plenty of communists went to seminaries to become priests so that the organisation could be changed from the inside.

      You are SO CORRECT re. “infiltration of the Catholic Church” which also led to those who entered the Priesthood who were not appropriate for the demands of a celibate life! Many were already “perverted,“ and they just continued to ”act out“ in an almost perfect situation where constant supervision was not used since the morals of a person was supposted to be ”supervising” them, and where “forgiveness” is a tenant–with the requirement Jesus’ gave, “Go, and sin NO MORE”!

      In a city where rampant liberal and even socialistic ideas exisit, the Church in recent years tended to assign Bishops who would not “rock the boat,” and in so doing, reduce Church attendance, support (both monetarily and literally), and who would represent the community from the community’s viewpoint.

      Thankfully, now we understand the futility of this type of questionable leadership! More and more conservative Bishops are being named for large cities and areas that liberalness and social justice has been able to run rampant.

      God be with the Church in the next generation and the ones beyond. You are the purpose of our being, and You need to increase, we need to decrease (to paraphrase Saint Paul).

      May God forgive our lapses of judgement and those who have paid for this misdirection of the Church!

    This is primarily why I left the church and keep my distance several years ago. I watched my church slowly involve itself in things that they had no business being in and they always seemed to be on the wrong side when they did. I left and have not hesitated to tell anyone why when they ask, much to my wife’s dismay. I love spirituality, but I detest and distrust organized religion.

      I found myself in the same boat.

      Disappointed a lot of people, but decided instantly that the future of my country (as well as my own sanity) is far more important than somebody’s feelings, or a religious organization itself.

      Too many people talk the talk, but get scared when you start exposing their religion, and then they distance themselves. It‘s sad when people don’t want to see the truth.

      The problem with walking away is you let the bad continue, even worsen. To help any organization, you stay INVOLVED and vocal. When bad happens, raise a holy stink, and keep at it. Why do you think the left has been so successful bringing about all the changes for years? They don’t let up, and we do. We give up and let them have their way because we are “polite” and “tolerant.” They are not polite (OWS) or tolerant. They find the words and way to keep pushing until they gain a little ground, then eventually it breaks through. We stand around and watch and say it is too big to do anything about. You are the PROBLEM. When you see something wrong, get mad and do something about it. Jesus even got mad and wrecked the money changers’ tables. I’m not Jesus, but I can try to follow his example. I’ll use words–spoken and written as long as I can. But I’ll also be like the widow who annoys the judge until he gives in. JUST DO IT.

      @Eagle… and any other that LEFT a church or walked away from their faith.. WHAT!! ARE YOU INSANE? FIGHT!! Stand up and demand to be heard, call out the pastor or priest or whomever is spilling out vile “social justice”/marxist theology. FIGHT until it is obvious that the church is going to burn itself to the ground but don’t walk away and watch from the sidelines as it goes down in flames over a period of years of decades.
      The RCC has issues but so does EVERY denomination.
      Saying the RCC helped Hitler just exposes you are a BIGOT..not you Eagle..others on these posts…
      The Vatican and the RCC did all they could to preserve Western culture, grant sancutary to escaping Jews, store art and literature that the Nazi’s wished to destroy but they knew that if they were TOO OVERT Hitler would level the Vatican. The Italian people and even Mussolini were able to divert Hitler and the SS and protect the Vatican as well and it was primarily that threat of losing Italy to the Allies that kept Hitler at bay.
      In Germany, ALL faiths eventually fell in line with the Nazi’s after watching COUNTLESS leaders be executed!!
      Social Justice is not BAD when it is done by the individual out of Love and Charity, which is where the RCC got in trouble. Their individual call for social justice was co-opted by the LEFT to mean GOVERNMENT controlled ‘social justice’ would be better and as stated, the Commies pushed it from the pulpit.

    Far too much money breeding corruption involved for the hierarchy that is the Catholic Church. There are many, many good Catholics as well as local Catholic churches but the business and operation that is the Catholic Church is surely not what Christ intended.

    None of the surprises me about the Catholic Church..The bible talks about the Great Whore dressed in scarlet and purple, on and on and on. The False Prophet in Revelation along with the anti-christ will rule the world in the years to come, The two of them will set up the Political side and a WORLD CHURCH. I believe our current Pope will be the last Pope before this False Prophet will be come to power with the anti christ.

      To bad you have no idea what the book of Revelation is all about. You can read it but you are misinterpreting it. Believe it or not Rvelation is about the catholic Mass and the Blessed Virgin Mary but you will never get this if you don’t turn to true Biblical scholars, those in the catholic church. The Catholic church wrote the Bible, believe it or not.

      To Gita- The RCC didn’t write the Bible. The Bible is made up of writings from the Apostles. The “early Church” put those writings into a book. The “early Church” was made up of five ancient churches established by the Apostles. These Churches are the Church of Jeruselum, Antioch, Alexandria, Constantinople, and lastly the Church of Rome. All five of these Churches are in existance today. Four are Eastern Orthodox and the other is the Church of Rome, which broke away from the original Church in 1024AD. It is now known as the Roman Catholic Church. More people need to research the early Church and understand what it is and how it was established. The RCC gives itself way too much credit!

Read about Bella Dodd, a former avowed communist and atheist who relented and converted to Catholicism and was actually baptised by the anti communist Bishop Sheen, who testified to recruiting over 1,000 communists to the priesthood under orders from Moscow.

    And it will be Catholics this November that send Mr. Obama down the road. The Catholic Church has many programs. As a Catholic, I can see that there needs to be much greater scrutiny on how funds are distributed. This should be a wake up call to Catholics to become more engaged in finding out where their charitable donations are being spent. I know I will.

    There’s no doubt that there are factions within the Catholic Church (and other denominations, for that matter) that support liberal policies. Jesus never said the devil wouldn’t try to destroy the Church – only that in the end, she would triumph.

      Can’t have a “faction” when you don’t belong to a denomination. In Jesus’ time, there were only Jews and Gentiles identified as His followers in the Bible. Jesus made us His followers and left us His word. In no place of His word do I find Him telling us to break up into denominations or factions.

      Not bashing Catholics. I love my brothers and sisters in Christ. Just saying a non-denominational, Jesus-following, Bible-believing, local church helping out fellow other Christians and churches in need locally as well as in others areas is the example found in the Bible from Acts to Revelation.

      We can debate whether the Catholic Church existed from the time of Jesus; obviously, being a convert to the Catholic faith, I believe it did. The Church Is One (Rom. 12:5, 1 Cor. 10:17, 12:13, ). Jesus established only one Church, not a collection of differing churches (Lutheran, Baptist, Anglican, and so on). The Bible says the Church is the bride of Christ (Eph. 5:23–32). Jesus can have but one spouse, and his spouse is the Catholic Church. His Church also teaches just one set of doctrines, which must be the same as those taught by the apostles (Jude 3). This is the unity of belief to which Scripture calls us (Phil. 1:27, 2:2).

      Although some Catholics dissent from officially-taught doctrines, the Church’s official teachers—the pope and the bishops united with him—have never changed any doctrine. Over the centuries, as doctrines are examined more fully, the Church comes to understand them more deeply (John 16:12–13), but it never understands them to mean the opposite of what they once meant.

      The problem with Bible churches is that they each have their own separate teaching authority to interpret scripture on their own with no accountability – which is what has kept the Catholic Church “true” for 2000 years (2Thess. 2:15; 1 Cor 11:2). Tradition and Scripture are not different or competing revelations. Today there are tens of thousands of competing denominations, each insisting its interpretation of the Bible is the correct one.       The resulting divisions have caused untold confusion among millions of sincere but misled Christians.

      Having said all that, the Catholic teaching of ‘subsidiarity’ states that we as Catholics are to help each other from the lowest dividing factor FIRST; i.e., family- then friends-then church-then community-then government, so we agree on this same principle as the Bible churches.

      I am not inclined to debate the tenets of your beliefs and why I choose not to be a member of the Catholic Church. As I said, we are one in Christ in His saving atonement. Hallelujah!

      However, I will say that Jesus’ church is based on His believers and followers, not an earthly institution. Surely, those new believers in the remotest regions of the world (now being reached for the first time with the Gospel!) are members of His church.

    Why should this be a suprise? In Central America when the Communists could not obliterate or force the change of the Catholic Church from resisting them en mass, they began a systematic infiltration of it and for some congregations, the slow, deliberate, fundamental transformation of the worship to a more communist/marxist line (social justice, collective salvation, etc.)

    Its been going on in the states as well; so why again the suprise Obama and his cronies/mentors would not be in cahoots with such figures at some time in the past?
