New Cases of Flesh-Eating Bacteria Hit the Southeast

There are now three reported cases of patients with a flesh-eating bacterial infection causing necrotising fasciitis in the southeastern United States. One is a student, another a mother of newborn twins, and the third a landscaper.
Doctors have said the cases are not related to each other.
(Related: Flesh-eating germ rare, especially for health)
The first was Georgia graduate student Aimee Copeland, who lost both feet and hands. The 24-year-old, miraculously is now breathing on her own and in even such a serious state of physical change, her father reports she is “cracking jokes, speaking frankly, displaying her usual early morning grumpiness.” Copeland became infected with the bacteria after she fell while zip-lining and cut her leg.

Next was a mother from South Carolina, whose case though serious, is less severe than Copeland’s and caused by a different bacterium. Lana Kuykendall, 36, gave birth to healthy twins at an Atlanta hospital last week. When the new family of four returned to their home in Piedmont, the mother – who is also a paramedic – noticed a pain and rash on her left leg.

As the spot began to spread, Kuykendall went to a local hospital, where she has since undergone several surgeries but was improving Thursday.
“She’s stable,” Darren Kuykendall, the woman’s husband, told The Associated Press in a phone interview from Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Watch this Fox News report on Kuykendall’s condition:
The third reported case, according to Atlanta’s 11 Alive News, is 33-year-old Bobby Vaughn. Vaughn of Cartersville, Ga., is just down the hall from Copeland in the hospital. So far, 11 Alive reports, Vaughn has had five surgeries that have removed two pounds of infected flesh, and he still has come reconstructive work ahead of him.

Compared to the two other women, Vaughn said it makes his condition seem much better. He said he is grateful he and the two women are alive.

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 11:15amResearch – caused by strep/staff bacteria. I can be in the ground. Or, with me, a child bit me on the arm who apparently was a carrier. Sometimes Rx does not stop this infection, but coupled with natural anti-bacteria/anti-viral essential oils did the trick for me. Continued use of oils internally and topically for a few months. Didn’t realize the real dangers until researching.

Hidden_Lion,
The story states only the pregnant woman was in the hospital prior to the illness. The other two went to the hospital for treatment.
—————-
No, you are absolutely wrong. The young woman who BTW for whatever reason is getting so much media coverage about this, DID indeed visit the hospital a few days before going in a second time. Get your facts straight.
I don’t see why the media has latched onto this story so securely. It‘s almost as though they’re so ignorant that they are unaware that this virus has been around for quite some time now. The Blaze included. I like Glenn Beck, been a loyal follower since CNN but a few things piss me off. Number one – the typos, often crappy writing, and overall it’s the same coverage as MSM but a lot less, mixed in with crap that isn’t important. “See this .223 caliber revolver shoot through Jesus.”
That’s the crap they run on here. Let’s not even mention the Mormon thing, that bothers me…and even worse than that, their whole “birthed thing is true but a lost cause.”. Sorry, first post, had to get that all out there! Btw – I used to be a Catholic..was raised that way. Realized its essentially a cult and am now baptist. Do your homework Glenn and ignore Pat G.

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 11:24am@Stayathome…“lets not even mention the mormon thing” ??? Really? You had to go there? Of course you did clarify things when you said you were raised Catholic but are now Baptist because Catholicism is a cult. What in the world does that have to with flesh eating bacteria? You Sir, just have an axe to grind and frankly, look more like a fool than anything with that post. With the rigid dogma and hate filled rhetoric you spew, you look more like a cult member than anyone else. If you don’t like the Blaze, go find somewhere else to read your news.

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 6:34pmI find it laughable that you have a problem w/ Mormonism while touting your abandonment of the One True Faith in favor of more recently conjured up baptist beliefs…. Even through the lens of history it’s clear that Catholicism has always been the church founded by Christ and contains the fullness of faith, why do you think it’s hated so?? It‘s the largest religion in the world yet it’s a ‘cult’? The world has always hated the Catholic church just as it has always hated Christ. The devil hates the Catholic church more than anything, you see those seeds sown in your own anti-catholic beliefs.

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 9:49pmI’ve had a similar bacteria while I was in intensive care following a fall which broke ribs and collapsed a lung. The bacteria ate through my penis into my urethrae. It was caused by a lack of hygiene while in IC (I was in a drug induced coma). The hole was discovered by a loved one cleaning me.
It did heal and led to a case of peronies disease. A medical malpractice attorney was consulted and said while I did receive poor care and a case could be made, all the hospital had to say in court was “we saved his life, sure had had this flesh eating bacteria, we cured it, and he is alive today”. Case closed.

From personal experience; Many times, I’ve noticed that health care workers, doctors, dentists, nurses, assistants, only wear gloves and masks to protect themselves.
Many of them don’t even try to protect us from patient to patient transferred germs.
I’ve seen them wear the same gloves and masks from room to room, patient to patient. They touch everything in site with their gloves, then touch their masks, and not change their gloves or masks.

Today we took our son to the ER. He had developed another region the size of a baseball within just 4 days. The Dr. decided to wait a bit longer before cutting it open and added another antibiotic. We’ll see what happens the next 24 hours.

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 7:43pmNot only does this nightmare seem to be growing, antibiotic resistant staph infections seem to be on the rise. Our society has over used antibiotics for people and in livestock production, not to mention the antibiotics in dish detergent, soap, lotion, hand cream, etc, etc. Add to that the amount of bleach in cleaning supplies. I wonder if our immune system is being harmed by all of this now our bodies can not fight off these horrible infections.
I have a family member that cleans everything with a mixture of bleach and detergent from can goods, milk/juice cartons, walls, dishes basically anything that will not be destroyed if it comes into contact with bleach it gets washed before it gets put in the cabinet. Needless to say this person is always sick with every cold/flu bug that comes around.

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 7:19pmI’ve started carrying a little tiny bottle of tea tree oil in my car and purse to put on cuts or scrapes where ever I am. I’ve always had it at home and have used it for about 25 years as our disinfectant but only recently began carrying it everywhere. Other than carrying around some EverClear, which would burn like crazy, it’s the best thing I can think of. Any docs want to comment?

Posted on May 21, 2012 at 7:52pmNot going to comment as a doctor but as someone who upon occasion uses natural remedies. Tea-tree oil, colloidal silver, Plantain poultice, Bay leaf oil all are said to help….however, this is NOT something you want to mess with!
The mother of twins got medical attention very quickly because she is a doctor herself and recognized there was a problem brewing, perhaps that could be why she was never as serious ill as the first young lady.
If you think there is a problem, don’t wait to go to the doctor! When in doubt, check it out.

I wonder (since there are many cases of bacterial infections caused by fish tanks and wild fish) if all these antibiotics that make way into our waters are the cause? Powerful elitists, think they can control too many things and the little people are the ones who always pay for it. I for one have had enough of these type of people.
BTW Tea-Tree Oil Is a fantastic natural product for many many uses, everyone should be using it IMHO. Cuts and scraps heal at least twice as fast in my experience.
