The story at the end of last week about an American Airlines flight attendant going on a wild rant and having to be restrained swept across the Internet. At the time, the only video and audio available showed mainly the passengers looking on in horror as the female attendant screamed. But now new video has surfaced from first class from one of the men who subdued her, and it’s chilling.
The video was taken by Kevin Ritch. He originally started filming the altercation from his front-row seat. But soon, the other flight attendants trying to subdue the woman asked him to help. He jumped up to lend a hand. And while he could no longer film, he kept the camera rolling to catch the audio. KDFW-TV explains what he captured:
“Get out of my way!” she screamed.
“Someone come help us please?” someone else said.
Ritch’s iPhone kept recording and capturing audio after he put it down.
“There were three of us really subduing her, leaning on her and somewhat sitting on her, primarily leaning,” he said.
In and out of riveting rage, at one point the flight attendant referred to those around her as military.
“This has not happened to me since 9/11 and I’m not putting up with this!” she screamed. “You’re with the Navy Seals. Seal Team 6. Back off!”
Another rant involved religion.
“I haven’t been to church in 10 years. I’m going to go to hell,” she said.
“You’re not going to hell, we’re all good. Why would you be going to hell, ma’am,” someone asked.
“I didn’t pray before I shut the doors during cross check,” she said.
The 15 minutes of rambling turned to threats.
“Somebody call 911 security system. I’m about to kill passengers before take off,” the flight attendant said.

It was determined the flight attendant was being treated for bipolar disorder but wasn’t taking her medicine.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 1:27pmPoliticalType- you said she is dangerous to the passengers, pilots and innocents on the ground and you imagine she has been fired. Let me ask you this. Is she dangerous all the time or just when she stops taking medication? From personal experience I will tell you this, that when an individual takes his/her required medication they are fantastic people personally and professionally. I supervised an individual who is bi-polar and when on her medication she was better than anyone in the same position. However, I also experienced how she is when she didn’t take her medication and it was neither pretty nor fun. So to say she is dangerous to the individuals you mentioned is quite vague. I suggest you clarify your response based on facts and not opinion.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 1:35pmQuite right — and there are more bi-polars out there than those being treated for it. They self-medicate w/alcohol and cocaine. Mental illness is not a reason to be fired. It is a reason to be diagnosed and treated. It’s ethnically no different fm physical illness. If you’re a member of the flight crew and have a head cold, you don’t fly that day.
Bi-polars and other mental illnesses are little more than brain chemistry problems. That’s why when properly medicated, bi-polars can be effective on the job…and more so than many others.
It’s frightening to those of us who have not worked in the mental health field to hear a grown person screaming like a 4 yr old in Wal-Mart at dinner time. It makes us fear we could be like that person – out of control. Our fear cuts us off fm the person who needs our help and support.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 2:05pm@Elena2010–Right on. But there are actually not so many Bipolars out there than are untreated, the severity of Bipolar I is such that sooner or later they will find there way to an Emergency Room. The argument that people with Bipolar ‘self medicate’ with alcohol and cocaine, while common and sometimes valid only promotes to the dilution of a very serious disease. Every addict wants to call themselves bipolar, as does every sociopath, and severe personality disorder–and it is B@llS##t! Bipolar is over diagnosed in the service of those who would prefer illness to personal responsibility, and so gain a stipend for disability. I get it, but please don’t lend credence to who would claim pathology rather than failure. Failure is OK, good, a motivator–pathology can be enervating to those looking for an excuse.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 4:30pmI’m sorry John, but as a pilot, I have to agree. This sort of condition is very dangerous when the person with the condition is being placed in a safety-sensitive position. As a pilot, we‘re rigorously screened to make sure we don’t have these sorts of mental disorders. Imagine if this had happened in-flight and she had reached the door. What then?
My intention is not to suggest she’s a bad person, as I don‘t know her and wouldn’t prejudge her like that. I’m just suggesting that, as a pilot, I wouldn’t feel especially comfortable having a member of my flight crew who has the potential to act so erractly if not properly medicated.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 5:01pmAgain–the problem with psychiatric illness is that everyone has an opinion. People who would understand that they haven’t the first clue about cancer and how it works or is treated, or can‘t express an opinion about thyroid disease because they know that they don’t know anything, these same people don’t have the same reluctance about psychiatric disease–but the truth is there is no difference. These same people who will recognize their ignorance when it comes to “medical” illness somehow think their opinion is meaningful when it comes to psychiatric illness. Sorry but as much as ignorance is bliss, it is still ignorance. That some of you think that your opinion regarding psychiatric illness is valid just because that is what you believe, I have to remind you that there are a lot of people who devote their lives to understanding psychopathology and the presumption that your gut “belief” supercedes their hard work to understand the human condition, is simply shameful on your part.

However in the cockpit I am expected to make thewse judgments and have these opinions because the safety of everyone on board my aircraft is at risk. This is one of a million small thoughts and decisions we have to make every day before we fly. I don’t claim to understand the disorder or the effects it has on those that it afflicts. I guess what I‘m getting at is that I don’t always have the luxury of having a formal education or being the subject-matter expert on every situation that arises in my aircraft, but I am in a position in which I have to make these judgments and decisions anyway.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 7:29pmid a passenger freaks out their name and face is plastered all over the media.why is a flight attendant a sacred cow?is this part of the secular humanist materialist agenda where we are reduced to being healthy brains or not healthy brains and if those in power deem actions committed by someone is the result of a sick brain then they are not responsible and so their identity is protected. in other words based on politics -those we choose to demonize vs. those we choose to protect we determine who we hi hold accountable and who we don’t. for some reason we have chosen to protect flight attendants but not pssengers. maybe one day only enemies of the state[terrorists] will have their identities disclosed.every one is e is protected because their actions are the result of a sick brain.Like this american soldier in afghanistan. and unlike hasan.Secular materiealism merges with politics here and in the future.

A person in such a state would wind up in a Psychiatric ER, period. Even if they wound up in jail first the trip to the nearest ER would be the next stop. Why? Because people this crazy put law enforcement at risk so they, at the very least, cover themselves by bringing them in for evaluation. CYA goes for law enforcement too.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 1:14pmThere is essentially no way for an employer to have access to this information, so the mentally ill community has to police themselves in this matter. The unfortunate truth is that there is such profound stigma that psychiatrically ill patients will do anything to convince themselves that they are fine, including going off their meds. Also the minute one admits to having had a psychiatric problem they are essentially unemployable. And here is the horrible joke of it all–those with actual psychiatric illness rather than substance abusers and sociopaths trying to get over on the system actually want to work and contribute. It really is as if recognizing the handicap makes you want to prove your worth, rather than pretending a handicap to gain advantage and an income. The only solution is to de-stigmatize mental illness and good luck with that–it is a fundamental human fear like death and dismemberment the stuff of which nightmares are made.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 1:18pmI think firing a flight attendant is akin to firing a school teacher. Nearly impossible!!! The unions make it so difficult, and they take their sides irregardless of the severity of the situation. This lady most likely has a mental illness (which is sad) but she’s not making it safe for anyone up there in the “friendly skies”. Would we let a blind man fly a plane? Why let someone with mental illness be trapped in an aluminum tube 6 miles high with a chance for psychotic outbreak? I say she needs to go too!
Report Post »woebegone
Posted on March 14, 2012 at 1:34pm@BEH0003–even though it is illegal to fire someone for becoming ill, don’t worry they will find a way. The reported truth is that she has a severe psychiatric illness, not her fault. What was her fault was that she neglected it to the point that she became a danger. If a diabetic stewardess didn’t take her medication and wound up in a coma on the plane that would cause a big problem too, and he or she should be fired too. Do you agree?
Report Post »beh0003
Posted on March 14, 2012 at 1:59pm@ WOEBEGONE – I see your point, and agree with you in principle. But honestly, a diabetic coma would be a slightly different situation. I don’t have all the answers (like so many people on this board that think they do!!) This situation speaks to me personally because I have personally been affected by medical situations which render it impossible for me to do the one thing I love to do unconditionally….FLY an airplane. For me, there is nothing better in life than getting into the cockpit of an airplane, and flying. There is no other freedom which comes close. And why it makes me mad when i see low flying traffic over my house, wishing I was the one in control of that aircraft, I remember, it may not be the best idea. I’m not going to share my medical issues with people on this board. Most likely, I would be called a demon, or some other horrible thing by one of the typical idiots on this site. And granted, pilots and flight attendants are two totally separate positions, but both require an incredible ability to act during bad situations, and this lady would not have been able to act if god forbid the plane crashed, or any other issue requiring her expertise were needed at the time. Once she crossed the line she crossed, there is no going back. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest that the man or woman serving me my next $8 cocktail may be taking lithium, depakote, or any of the countless medications. Just keep taking them.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 2:29pm@BEH0003–Absolutely, I agree, and thank you for your candor. I am not advocating that anyone ever be put at risk on the basis of any illness. Truth be told a stewardess in a diabetic coma will be no help at all in a crisis, any more than a psychotic stewardess would be. My point is that illness is illness, non compliance is non compliance, that non compliance is a personal choice and that non compliance is the choice made by people who should not be given jobs of any responsibility to others, because they are not demonstrating responsibility to themselves. Here is the hard part. The prejudice against psychiatric patients is such that they are placed in the most dark and ugly of places. I don’t know if it can be helped. Many psychiatric patients are very high functioning and have a lot to offer so to relegate them to ‘sheltered workshops’ is draconian by any measure. Also, denies all their gifts and what they have to offer.

As someone who has been a victim of the draconian measures you speak of, I can totally relate to what you have been saying. We have already given up, and lost so much of our personal liberty throughout the years because people don’t want to educate themselves on subjects they have no knowledge about. People with mental illness, and specifically bipolar disorder can be, and are, among the most productive and civilized citizens among us. They are no more demons, or monsters than any other ordinary citizens. In fact, those who speak of them in such horrible ways (like previous posters whose names I won’t mention) have far more wrong in the head than the so called ‘sick” people have. The double standard in remarkable. Thank you for speaking up for the rights of others. I always enjoy your posts. I sincerely hope the flight attendant gets the help she needs. Posted on March 14, 2012 at 7:49pmWell said, Politicaltype! I wondered at how long it took before someone submitted a realistic, to-the-point, even if polictially-incorrect, post.
An important and unaddressed factor; why did she stop taking her crucial medication? Did she forget? Did she not feel like it? Did she believe she no longer needed it? Did she run out? Whatever the reason, it could very well happen again, and at any time. Will someone be there in future to supervise, make certain she takes her daily medication before she reports for duty? Is this a reasonable expectation and safeguard? There is good reason why pilots are screened and disqualified if mental illness is admitted, or determined… simply because there is too much on the line to recklessly bet on the discipline and sound judgment of a mentally impaired individual.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 12:12pmBipolar Disorder comes in two varieties: Bipolar I and II. Bipolar I is most likely what this woman has–it is the more severe form and includes the likelihood of becoming psychotic at both the depressive and manic ends. Bipolar II patients have the less severe form and while it doesn’t rule out the possibility of psychosis it is much less likely to occur. Schizoaffective patient have features of both a mood disorder and schizophrenia–thus these patients may be psychotic even if the symptoms of the mood disorder are not present. Hope that helps. Then there is this–Bipolar disorder in general is way over diagnosed to cover behaviors associated with substance abuse (especially psychosis associated with substance abuse, and also in severe personality disorders which exhibit mood instability as a major feature, ex. Borderline Personality Disorder) It takes a trained eye (and time) to tell the difference. You can thank insurance companies for the over diagnosis of what is actually a very severe disorder–they won’t reimburse substance induced psychosis, or personality disorders, so to actually be able to treat these patients clinicians are forced to give a “reimbursable” diagnosis. Hope that helps, too.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 12:48pm@ Wobegone, my personal belief is that people with so called bi-polar disorder were not properly disciplined as a child. They were left to throw their tantrum or their parents caved and reinforced their idiotic behavior. All of this could have been prevented by a belt and a stern father 30 + years prior. Practice makes permanent, and this woman is now permanently psychotic.
@ Grudgywolf, you are absolutely right….. to think that others will call you a psycho for claiming that this woman has a demon in her. Demons and angels influencing human behavior make nice graphic novels and movies, but they are fiction nonetheless.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 5:30pm@GRUDGYWOOF – I don’t think you are off-base saying that – when I heard the audio, the first thing I thought of was that it was a “demon” as well. It was the bizarre gurgling/munching sound that came from her throat. You could *feel* it through the audio. So…why does medication work? Her medication dampens her “reception” to the demon, and once the medication wears off, the evil spirit can control her and take her over.
And yeah, I know some folks don’t believe in that stuff, which is fine…they haven‘t experienced the dark side directly and so don’t know what it’s capable of, which is a blessing for them, really.
PS As for childhood sexual abuse, unfortunately, that’s probably one very easy way for some sort of evil entity to attach to someone, especially if the abusers are involved in drugs or worse.

No one should have to hide their illness, but no passenger should be jeopardized by a lack of monitoring this type of situation.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:06amLived this for years…ex-wife was bi-polar/paranoid schizophrenic (she has a bit of both). I would hesitate having her as my flight attendant. The guy that said that is a moron. Someone with mental issues should never be in charge of people. Flight attendant, nurse, dental assistant, doctor, lawyer, COP, security etc. Very low stress is best.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:03amI don’t care about this story and wish it would just die. The woman has mental health issues. Let it lie.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:01amOh it was because she forgot to take her medicine? Or was it because her fountain was crushed because she forgot to pray during cross-check? But then again that’s what medicine really is in that it prevents people from having their fountains crushed. At least until God comes in glory to crush everyone’s fountains all at once because you think God is someone to mess with.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:12pmIt surprises me that of all the self-professed Christians on this site, and what we’re clearly hearing and seeing in this video, that not one of them suggested prayers for this woman. Instead, it’s all been a race to see who could type out the best comment.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 9:58amPeople with Bi-Polar Disorder should never be in charge of that many people up in the air. Period. Hope she can stay grounded after she is well. This should not have happened, with all of the passenger screening; it is not fair to them as a customer.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:07amNor should she be able to vote or own a gun.
But then how many women in the US have chemical unbalance? Or emotional distress? Seems like it is a growing problem.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 9:50ama few months from now if this poor woman is on her meds and stabilized, all of this negative =continued= attention will surely condemn her. this is as bad as all of us going to see the bloodstained floor at a crime scene. a shame that Blaze is posting this and continuing the NATIONAL embarassment this woman will have to bear.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:01amIt‘s NEWS and it’s NOT just the BLAZE reporting? Maybe someone who is BI-POLAR will see this and it wil help them or other around them ‘understand” some of the problems.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:01amI hate to sound cold, and I am not, but someone who deals with the public (especially in a claustrophobic setting) and gets paid good wages for her service, should be responsible for taking her meds. My niece is bi-polar, and knows the consequences of not taking her meds, and so does this professional.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:04amYes. It’s so sad that if someone screws up, it will never go away and be on You Tube forever.
Believing in Christ takes away sin and wipes the slate clean in case one is dealing with something that seems to not go away.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:06amI have a good friend who has mental issues & when she is off her meds OMG. When she is on them she is ok. She can work a part time volunteer job but, like the News woman said it is a LOW STRESS job. It was such a sad thing to witness when she was getting this way. She KNEW what was going on & would cry to me, “why can`t I just be normal?”. Since she has this condition she has stayed on her Meds but her life can never be what she had wanted it to be.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:06amI don’t know. On the one hand, it’s good for people to see and recognize the effects of the disorder. I have a neighbor with bipolar disorder and the actions are very recognizable once you have seen them and know their cause.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:13amThis was a flight attendant and the plane was on the ground. It would have been much more embarrassing (and tragic) if this were a pilot and the plane was in the air.
Maybe the lady should consider a career change. Or, maybe she will develop a plan the guarantees this doesn’t happen again.
