New Dem. Whip Hoyer Says Pay Freeze Should Include Military

Former House Majority Leader, and newly-elected minority whip, Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said today that President Obama’s just-announced pay freeze for 2 million civilian government employees should also be extended to military personnel.

“While I appreciate that the president reduced the length of his proposed pay freeze from three to two years,” Hoyer said in a statement according to The Hill, “it would have produced significantly more savings had that sacrifice been shared between federal civilian and military personnel — with a strong exception for the members of our military and civilian employees risking their lives on our behalf in Afghanistan, Iraq, and anywhere else they are serving in harm’s way.”

According to Hoyer in the statement, including the military would have increased savings and added “an element of fairness.”

Our military funding should not be cut…….period! Why should our brave men and women be sacrficed because of the overwhelming debt that this president has put us in? No way should their safety be risk or their ability to do their job be threatened. They deserve the highest paying jobs in this country and the best retirement our country has to offer. God Bless them all. I salute them and keep them in my prayers. This man is an ungrateful idiot that should have to go to battle on the front lines. Maybe he would understand “an element of fairness” first hand.

How about a pay increase to those military, serving in country? a pay increase to wives/husbands of those currently serving and their dependents? Now that seems like a positive expenditure to me.

He depends on ONE county to vote for him, he ignores the rest of us and Last year ACTAULLY told a woman to “sit down and shut up” at a town hall meeting. Even our local Newspaper has turned on him

Obama probably always intended to cut military spending, but of course it would be too politically damaging for him to actually suggest it. Just let the minority whip suggest it and take the heat instead. Am I crazy for thinking this?

I agree, let him (AND CONGRESS) set the example I couldn’t even believe that CONGRESS would be exempt. JERKS! How about spending Christmas with Michelle and the girls a little closer to the White House, like maybe Camp David? Or will there be ANOTHER trip to Hawaii? Let’s wait and see. Maybe Steny should have a little six or eight week all expenses paid vacation himself — at boot camp or basic training. Hope he’s prepared for the flak (figuratively speaking) coming his way after his comment.

Why the large difference in the pay of a man or women that serves their country in an all volunteer MILITARY and that of any PUBLIC servant in the United States Congress?

Congress pay should NOT be one red cent more than any GI in our MILITARY – Period. Now that would save some REAL MONEY …..especially if the staff of those PUBLIC servants in the US Congress was also set one red cent LESS than any GI !!!

How is it someone who has a “job”(congressman/woman) that should be part time is making $170K+ year with lifelong benefits serving while another man/woman serving is making about $25K?

Friggin PG county waited till last to turn their ballots in and they have WAY more pop than we do (rest of us are rural farm counties). Made me almost cry, I felt like why do we even bother voting if its so uneven.

maybe we should start a CASE ACTION – IN TRUST FOR- the

You get a receipt for paying your taxes on time… and credit but
they don’t get any until they start doing things in a reasonable way.
I don’t see any reason behind the waste and stupidity.

I agree with both you and Hoyer, and I’m a vet of two different services.

      Here’s why:

We spend all our lives complaining about special rules for some that don’t apply to others. Well? Isn’t this the same, in reverse? You‘re correct in that he’s yet another in a long, long, long, LONG line of overpaid bloviating sacks of crap in DC, *but* we need to be intellectually honest.

If it’s good for the goose is good for the gander, even if said gander is underpaid and underappreciated.

My opinion is, he and everyone like him need to make what we make. You want to realize real budget reduction? $100k per Representative & more per Senator would go a long way to hitting that goal. Well… that, and getting rid of all the newly hired $150k+ salaries that Obama’s added since coming into office.
