UPDATE (8:50 p.m. 3/4/12): Angel Babcock Died Sunday at 4:10 p.m.

The 20-month-old baby girl found alone in an Indiana field in the aftermath of Friday’s tornado devastation is the lone survivor of her family of five.

Angel Babcock’s 21-year-old father Joseph Babcock, 20-year-old mother Moriah Brough, 2-year-old brother and 2-month-old sister all perished in a tornado that ripped through New Pekin, Ind. and somehow transported the little girl into the field, WXYZ-TV reported.

According to the Louisville, Ky. Courier-Journal, neighbors said the family was seen hunkering down in their mobile home, lying face down in a hallway with their hands clasped in prayer as the tornado approached. A family friend told WXYZ they were violently thrown from the home and their bodies scattered.

“Kendall was a month-and-a-half old. And she was found in her car seat upside down. Jayden was 2 years old and he was found under the rubble,” Sherry Young, the mother of Joseph Babcock’s best friend told the station. “Joseph was found on the opposite side of the road from his house. Moriah was found underneath a tree. Angel was found out in the middle of the field all alone. She’s 20 months old.”

There are conflicting reports about how far away from her home Angel was found, and whether she was completely by herself or was surrounded by her deceased family members. Some reports said the field was in Salem, Ind., 10 miles away from New Pekin, while other reports said she was found close to her home.

She was initially taken to a hospital in Salem before being flown to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky. with no name and no family. A spokeswoman for the Salem hospital told the Associated Press that Angel was found near her home.

After she was brought to Kosair, authorities used television broadcasts to put out a search for her relatives. Cis Gruebbel, vice president of patient care services at Kosair, told the Courier-Journal the little girl’s extended family is now with her.

“She is in extremely critical condition,” her grandfather Jack Brough told the newspaper. “She’s had a lot of injuries to her head. The doctors told us that the next 24-48 hours are very critical. I’m just asking everyone to pray for my granddaughter and for my family.”

Sherry Young told WXYZ the family did not have any insurance, and a Bank of America fund has been set up for them called the Babcock Family Fund. Money collected will be used to pay for funeral expenses, and any funds remaining will go into a trust fund for Angel.

I am so sad for the family. This was in the Good Morning America story. This is very touching to read:

“I had my arm around her when she took her last breath,” Babcock said in an exclusive interview with ABC News. “I sang to her itsy-bitsy spider.”

Angel’s mother, Moriah Babcock, 20, father Joseph Babcock, 21, and two siblings Jayden and Kendall were found dead in the same field as the toddler Friday afternoon. Angel’s grandmother told ABC News that when she let her granddaughter go Sunday afternoon, she knew the baby girl was going in the arms of her father.

“We were all around the bed, I had my hand on the side of her, and I reached for her hand, and was holding her hand,” Babcock said. “I don’t know what made me let go but she put her arms straight up, she was daddy’s little girl. So daddy picked her up and took her. The whole room seen that. He was just like, standing in front of her. She wanted to go with daddy.”

Yow!!! What a bunch of whack jobs!!!
No big mystery here, build a shelter, go hide in it.

to 666sucks — you are so right! I have said from day one (and I didn‘t vote for obammie because my heart and gut told me something wasn’t right about all of this) that the most obvious bit of evidence that obammie is not a citizen is that he is un-American, totally! If he were acting in such a manner to protect this country and her people, no one would dare be questioning his eligibility — but we are questioning it because he‘s showing us he’s a traitor, guilty of treason and God help us if he gets re-elected because they will finish off this once great country!

My prayers for baby Angel–and God rest the souls of her family and keep them all in his hands!

The article said the 6 week old infant was placed in a car seat. I wonder if they were planning on evacuating and couldn’t, or if they thought the car seat was the safest place for the infant while they waited out the storm. I pray the surviving baby recovers quickly.

After a family’s home has been burglarized they often increase security on their homes; I wonder if the same is true for those directly affected by tornadoes. When they rebuild are they more likely to include a storm cellar or tornado safe room? Does anyone know?

And those of you who can’t believe this can happen think nothing is wonderful or mysterious in life. It doesn‘t interest you that women living together mimic each other’s menstrual cycles, because of unseen connections. It doesn’t interest you women have a 28 day cycle as the moon does. Been to tornado alley many times and proposed the following life safety solution to code enforcement authorities.

Make it compulsory via building code that an independent, water tight & vented, subterranean steel reinforced concrete safe, sufficient in size to temporarily quarter four adults, with a top mounted, bright yellow striped, passage latched, steel access door, must be installed before a permit is issued to strap any prefabricated home to the ground. And, construct the prefabricated units with direct floor access to the safe’s access door beneath it.

Similar units are prefabricated in nearly every city in tornado alley, they’re call septic tanks, or storm water junction boxes.

      Posted on March 4, 2012 at 10:58am

They can probably even be made with an old car frame: the steel is already shaped and welded in strong unibody. Set it in a hole under the spot where the mobile home will be. Wrap it up in plastic (to make it watertight) and pour concrete around it. Access would be through the home‘s floor and the car’s roof. Could it really be that cheap and easy?

Do we really need more regulation? These poured concrete above ground bunkers can be a room incorporated into the construction of a house if someone chooses. They do not need the expense of a sealed underground bunker. We are here on this Earth for a season, some people’s season last longer. We cannot expect government to regulate us into living a safe and happy life, raising the cost of just living a simple life out of reach.Just saying.

      Stoic >

Don’t know if it would double the cost, but a good size waterproofed pre-cast concrete septic tank runs about $700 – $900 installed, sans drain field, set in excavated sand.
Fitting a steel hatch and venting might run a few hundred more.
A 1250 gal tank is large enough for two adults and two kids to hunker down in for a few hours.
Might get cramps after awhile, but consider the alternative.

Recall being inside an earthen storm well in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, it wasn’t much bigger and doubted the shabby wooden doors would stop much from being sucked out during a tornado. The property owners had to use it twice in twenty years, so it did serve its purpose.

This type of cr@p just irritates me to no end. I know God has his plans, but I really wish I knew why something like this happens. Even thinking about and playing out this scenario, if it happened to my family, in my mind is so horrid I have to shake my head, shred those thoughts, and bury them in the lock-box in the back of my mind. I would be a worthless wreck if I lost any of my children. Unbelievable! I guess the only consolation I can come up with is that all too often we get busy with life and forget to really cherish every moment. Maybe this is just one of those reminders. I wish I could take away that little girls pain for her, as she grows up and begins to understand. They, among others, will be in my prayers. God bless that family.

Those of us who live in “tornado alley” know to watch the weather closely this time of year. Those who live in mobile homes usually have a safe place such as a relative’s house with a basement. It‘s tragic that this family didn’t head to their safe place hours before the storm struck as no mobile home is safe. Perhaps someone enterprising inventor could come up with an affordable “bunker” for people who live in manufactured homes.

If it would be more affordable, build a tornado shelter in every mobile home park where tenants can hunker down during times like this. Depending on the size of the park, two might have to be built. A portion of the monthly rent could be used to pay for it. It should not be mandatory, but perhaps the state could give owners of such parks an tax incentive for building one or two.

Instead you continue to “Saul Alinsky” Arpaio and we Birthers. Shame on you for being a hypocrite in so many ways, and I am not alone! I lived with them all my life. You learn to do what you can. A storm cellar is best but not practical for most locations. A basement is what most in the midwest have for safety – it depends on the storm. Looking at pictures of the tornado that hit Joplin last year showed a lot of debris (including cars) blown into basements. While a tornado can be devastating, their path is usually narrow, so the odds of getting hit are small; I’ve had much more property damage from straight-line winds from a storm front and hail.

Anywhere you chose to live have their dangers: earthquakes/tsunamis; wind; ice/snow/cold; hurricanes; flooding; drought; fire; and volcanoes. You can now add to that civil unrest, terror attacks, and nuclear threats. You take the dangers in mind, build accordingly, learn the necessary safety/evacuation procedures, make a “family plan,” and place yourself in God’s protecting hands. Each of us have a set number of days on this earth; make the best of them and don‘t worry about the rest because there’s really not much you can do about it.

As single stack said, tornado alley is the middle third of the country. And that doesn’t include the large number of tornadoes that occur in the southern states or the lower east coast states. If nobody lived in those areas we’d all be crowded into the west coast and the upper half of the NE part of the country. Tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, ice storms, extreme heat & cold – you get extreme weather no matter where you live. Best policy is to know it, prepare for it and live your life without obsessing about it.

    Father,

Please hold this little one close and reveal your Lordship…

In Yeshua’s Precious Name we ask, Adonai….

I can’t even fathom losing my children and grandchildren in one fell swoop – my heart and prayers go out to those families.

My heart breaks for the family. To lose one child or grandchild would be painful enough..to lose them all at one time, must be as close to unbearable as it gets. My prayers are for all that are suffering from these tornadoes.

I am glad that they have one left to hold and to care for. She will be their lifeline, a reason to get up every morning.
