New EPA Rules Could Cost Three MT Plants $90M

New EPA Rules Could Cost Three MT Plants $90MThe Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) plan to “improve air quality and visibility” in famous parks, such as Yellowstone, could cost three industrial plants in Montana up to $90 million dollars in upgrades. The EPA says the Colstrip coal power plant, Ash Grove cement plant near Montana City, and Holcim cement plant would have five years to make the appropriate upgrades.

“The Environmental Protection Agency plan would clear the air in the Big Sky State of about 15,000 tons annually of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides,” the Great Falls Tribune reports. “Those pollutants react with the atmosphere to create haze.”

Of the three plants that would be affected by the new regulations, Colstrip would get hit the hardest: the coal power plant will have to spend approximately $80 million to clean the emissions from its stacks. Colstrip operator PPL Montana says the new regulations are far too costly and for only “marginal improvements.” Spokesman David Hoffman said the visibility improvements would be “non-perceptible.”

“We‘re moving very quickly in a short period of time at huge costs to obtain a result that’s pretty questionable,” Hoffman said. “It’s going to be a challenge to the plant.”

But there are some exempt from the new regulations. For instance, the coal plant PPL’s Corette in Billings, MT, isn’t required to make any upgrades.

“The EPA was prodded into action by a legal challenge in part by environmentalists who sued the agency to set deadlines to follow through on haze rules adopted in 1999,” the Great Falls Tribune reports. “Two of the groups involved, WildEarth Guardians and the Montana Environmental Information Center, said the agency’s proposal does not go far enough.”

Indeed, even with these new regulations, spokesmen for the environmentalist groups are still dissatisfied with the EPA.

“People might gasp a little bit and say that’s a lot of money but you have to look at how much these companies are profiting off these facilities. It dwarfs these costs,” said Anne Hedges with the Montana Environmental Information Center.

The new EPA proposal could become final after a 60-day public comment period, the Tribune reports. Public hearings hosted by the EPA are scheduled for May 15 in Helena, MT, and May 16 in Billings.

“[T]he reduction in pollution would have spinoff benefits to public health, particularly among children,” EPA spokesman Rich Mylottt in Denver told the Tribune in an emailed statement.

I would like to raise awareness about a polluter located in Montana and Wyoming that vents millions of tons of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and more than 150 tons of mercury into the air each year. It also produces other toxic gases, with periodic emissions that have killed local wildlife — even large animals.

It has been in continuous operation longer than anyone can remember.

      It’s called Yellowstone National Park.

Call your legislator today, and let’s get this dangerous thing shut down.

So the pattern by the EPA is to shut down coal plants here,
      Then our coal mining declines.
Then our surviving coal producers can cheaply export to China.
China’s manufacturing profits allow them to review US coal producing sites that were shuttered, so they purchase them cheaply too.
Chinas pollution comes over the pacific.
The EPA cracks down on other dirty facilities, in the USA, so the cycle can continue to the next resource.

EPA seems to be working for China.
We should be examining that department for spys / advocates of China, or other nations who want to cheaply acquire our natural resources.

It would kill tens of millions immediately and hundres of millions more over times, perhaps even billions of people the world round. Yes, we should build a huge chimney around yellowstone to vent such an eruption directly into space. Please do not shut down the power plants. Instead, find the names and addresses of all EPA members, and every member of a tree hugger organization, and SHUT OFF THEIR power. Let them put in their own wind and solar power to replace the coal generated power. Ron Paul, if elected would dismantle the EPA, on day one of his presidency.
      But no, he’s not “electable”.

He would end the association (actually an international lien) with the PRIVATE BANK, the Federal Reserve.
You know, that bank that took control of our Treasury in 1920 due to the 1913 federal reserve act.
The PRIVATE bank that PRINTS “money” from thin air and loans it to our “government” (which is actually a Corporation” – look up The District of Columbia Organic Act of 1871.) with INTEREST.
      But he is not “electable”.

He would end the IRS and INCOME TAX on day one, and allow 100% free enterprise with minimal regulations.
But no, he is not “electable”.

He would enforce our borders and deport illegals. Also, he would cut off ALL of their “government” benefits.

Don’t you just love the last line of the article? Essentially, “It’s for the children…” What a typical liberal progressive Democrat mantra. “The children” are going to have to cope with parents who will now have to pay an additional $90 million in energy costs to amortize the EPA-mandated changes in their electric utilities’ plants. Thanks a lot, Tree-Huggers. These whackos care more about “The Environment” than they do about people. Hey, a lot of the electricity produced in Coalstrip is exported via high-voltage lines to Arizona and California… Perhaps Montana Power should simply cut back until they are only producing enough power for their home state. And then a bunch of eco-freaks in California can dehydrate and starve to death in the dark. That would be a win/win situation.

We will then see how little power Washington has, if/when states begin to say “I will not comply”.

Washington also depends on the fact, that states allow it to assess and collect taxes on citizens, within the borders of each respective state, so I have to wonder, what would happen, if some states started to refuse to let the government do this?…..hmmm

A challenge to the plant doesn’t sound like lay offs and rate hikes to me.

We are a nation of laws. The company should have voluntarily complied with existing laws.

You Keys seem more upset then the plant operators.

Marybethelizabeth, you do not seem to understand. The EPA constantly contradicts itself. It issues rules, then when a company complies with them it isn’t enough and they make an entirely different set of rules. I am speaking from experience, as my family is in the coal industry. The entire plan of the EPA is to bankrupt industry and make the price of energy too high, thus making all of us dependent on the government for our sustenance.

I could be wrong but I don’t think posts are censored.

I think there is something wrong with the comment section computer code.

Posts seem to drop frequently near the bottom of the page shortly before a page two is created.

@Mary – Did you miss the part about “new ”laws”? Hint – story Headline:”New EPA Rules….”

Let’s try the math thing again. If you get new tax levied against you for $500, how much less is your income?

Did you read the story? The New Rules are from 1999, last century.
A court ruling is the new part.
If the companies had acted responsibly the work would already be done and the cost may have been less.

They’d rather pay lawyers than lessen the harm they do to the communities in which they operate.

The $90,000,000 figure is an estimate.

like yes, I, like, did read it especially this part …”The new EPA proposal could become final after a 60-day public comment period, the Tribune reports. Public hearings hosted by the EPA are scheduled for May 15 in Helena, MT, and May 16 in Billings.”

New general means, especially as used in this case, regulations that just happened. Since 1999 didn’t just happen it follows that the 1999 regs are not being discussed as the new ones.
