New Film Exposes the Lifestyles of ‘Tiny House People’ Who Live in Bizarrely Small Homes

Fair Companies Kirsten Dirksen Makes Tiny House Movie| Small House Movement

Interesting homes have become an area of intrigue here at The Blaze. From the world’s largest treehouse to some of the smallest abodes ever seen, we’ve covered them all. Now, for those who find themselves dumbfounded, perplexed and curious regarding how individuals can make everyday-use of very tiny spaces, there’s a new documentary coming called, “We the Tiny House People.”

The film, set to release on April 23, documents the people who — whether they know it or not — are part of the so-called “Small House Movement.”

Fair Companies Kirsten Dirksen Makes Tiny House Movie| Small House Movement

Fair Companies’ Kirsten Dirksen, who produced the new documentary after capturing hundreds of hours of film, explains how she first discovered the movement and began promoting the ultra-miniature homes:

I stumbled into the Small House Movement by accident of location- my parents live within miles of the tiny house poster boy Jay Shafer and his 89 square foot home-, but within a couple of years I had become a part of it as one of the few, and most likely only, videographers documenting small shelters on a regular basis. [...]

I continue to discover people- who often aren’t even aware there’s a movement of their type (see Small House Society)- living in shipping containersshacks, houseboats, converted garages, cavestool sheds, former pigeon coops, Airstream trailers and treehouses. They don’t all think alike, but all those I’ve interviewed see their decision to live small as a choice, and often as the most direct path to an examined, and happier, life. [...]

I‘m reluctant to claim there’s some sort of magic in small abodes- I’m sure some people are watching simply for the “house porn” (as Shafer describes it)-, but it’s obvious these stripped-down shelters reveal for us the essense of home, and for many, make it a bit easier to “suck the marrow out of life”.

Dirksen has released an 11-minute trailer that gives a lens into the knowledge that viewers can expect to gain from the tiny-home film. Watch it, below:

You can live happy with less. For exapmle, we chose to “RV” in a “Teardrop” trailer instead of a class A pusher. I can afford either, or both for that matter, but I choose smaller because its simple. I didn’t have to buy a new mop…I can use a paper towel.

Bigger is not better, its just bigger. I’d rather live 10 acres of land and live in a tiny home that to live in the oppulant subdivisions with postage stamp lots.

Its not necessarily maobamas fault for everyone who makes these choices.

Doing the best you can with the best you have until the the best comes along. Until then……….you can survive!

The people are putting themselves there because its trendy and cool, plus think really believe they are doing their part for the country kinda like restricting ones self to buy only American cars in the late 70s and 80s when they made crap. Buying better quality things taught GM/Ford to build better cars. I think the same thing can be done here but we’ve gotta reduce the expenses for building a home in the first place and the taxes that go along with it. If everyone trends towards shoeboxes, then these lil shoe boxes will get more expensive and the property taxes will soar as well because their not living in the big homes with the high county tax rates, they’ll recoup these loses one way or another. Just like the tiny cars running around now called the smart car. California has been discussing for years now to tax people by the miles they drive instead of the annual fee. Gas savers reduce state taxes through the pump and thus the need for taxing miles driven. Does not matter!

Rednecks discovered this lifestyle long ago. Its called a trailer park. I have lived on my 25 foot boat for months at a time in Dana Point harbor. Not a bad way to live in Southern Calilfornia. I may sell the boat soon and get a fifth wheel trailer to replace it. So I can live like a tiny house person in the National Parks.

Anyone notice the common thread of the “tiny house people” …..ALONE…. if thats they way they choose to live, more power to them. The problem is, with the exception of the Old Cowboy in Idaho, all the other people, seem to me, to be the “earth worshipers” who will eventually be demonizing those who choose to live in a “common house” and then try and get the government to force everyone to live “smaller” ……”like…we gotta save the earth, ya know…”

They didn’t build crap in the 70s and 80s. The reason they had issues was when they found a solid platform they kept it the same for too long and didn‘t update the car while the competition didn’t. Why do you think the civic has 9 generation and it is and younger car than the mustang or camaro? Because honda kept updating the car. Another problem was refusing to change when the demand changed.

I noticed that, too. And the not family-friendly part. How do you put a family of 4 in a 100 sq ft house? If you’re a single person, or retired and down to just 2 people, it’s feasible. I still get the feeling they’re trying to get us used to gulogs. Let’s take this 3 bedroom house away from you, make it hold 3 family units and you WILL be happy.

I thought the same thing. This is representative of a culture shift… one away from families and leaving a legacy. The one fella summed it up well when he said something like “I don’t like wasted space. Space should matter. In this home I feel like every bit of space MATTERS.”

We used to find our worth in family and having children. Now we’ve been told not to spread out too much and harm the environment. We can no longer do the things that matter so we’re looking for other ways to matter and find worth. Sadly now, the best way to matter is to leave as small a mark as possible and not disturb anything while you’re here.

What’s strange is, I have a family and have made the choice to live as simply as possible. I don‘t do it because I’m afraid to leave a mark though. I do it because I want to be able to use my excess to live as big a mark possible for the God who took on marks for me.

I know, I’m talking out of both sides of my mouth. I’m ok with that.

Completely correct. Home prices and land prices are making it impossible for many of us to own homes. Also once you own a home, it ties you to the bank, the community, the government, and a lot of stuff to fill the home with. Truth be told there are an awful lot of single people out there–of all ages–who should not be suspect sexually or otherwise on account of being single without children. And I don’t think I saw anyone advocating this for the married with children people, these are single people finding a solution to their situation that is both affordable, comfortable, and perhaps most important relieves them of the pressure to fill up empty spaces (literally and figuratively). Where is the harm? Why the offense? I admit that there is a cabin on the Blue Ridge Parkway with a small garden that belonged to an elderly lady that I wish I could move in to sometimes. In someways containing all the pressure for excess by choosing a small space would be the ultimate in luxury. One caveat and a damaging one to my own argument–I’d need outdoor space to exploit. Whether in a city, or in the country because my living space would be a refuge rather than a world. This seems to me the most important of distinctions–where do you live you life inside your house or outside it.

In 2001, after drooling over little houses, I converted my van into a ‘mini-home’. Took out the two back seats and put in a bed, under bed storage, drawers for food, etc, even a sink and potty. My bright idea was to travel the US using National Parks and Forests for ‘camping’. Got a free Access card from the gov that lets me use campgrounds for half price, and set out on my big adventure. Loved it. Now live in 450 sq ft apt, but still have van ready to go. I call it my insurance against homelessness. Grandkids love it for camping with Gram. We keep a tent in it for when we need extra space. Not big enough for kids to move in, but small enough to park in their driveways. :)

This is a good thing, Don’t try to read too much into it folks. People need to be free. This is Free. When it comes family time, they can get a piece of property, building a center patio and have ‘pods’ on all four sides (husband, kids) … The people who spent every dime they had or would have on the tacky MCMansions are kicking themselves now…not only is A/C going thru roof, but Property Taxes and upkeep to. Roger that! Some of these people need to visit countries where people are truly impoverished. Then maybe all of the non grunt types can get some perspective on how easy we have it. In the mountain villages of Guatemala I have seen families of six living in a one room house the size of my living room. Try a mud brick home with a thatched roof in Kosovo for fancy living, those are nice. Indoor plumbing? Forgeddabouddit! We have all been spoiled by the prosperity which this president is choosing to destroy. Get used to the small house idea, we are all headed that way. Not that it’s all bad. Some of the nicest, most humble, gracious and giving people I’ve ever met were those dirt poor villagers in the Guatemalan highlands. None of the rich plicks we meet here. And they’re right to do so. These dog-kennels are terrible for anyone trying to prepare or lead a self-sufficient life. No room to store supplies. No place to process food, work on projects or repair equipment.

And they’re far from efficient. Equipment for heating, cooling, plumbing and other utilities will cost nearly as much as for a multi-bedroom McMansion; appliances are no cheaper because they’re being shoehorned into a shed.

These are simply “statements” rather than functional homes. And the prices being asked make this clear. Some of these “minimalist” homes cost $60,000 or more. And that’s for the home, on a trailer, with not a square inch of real estate. Truly minimalist would be a $800 shed from Home Depot, a weekend’s worth of work adding insulation and paneling, and a few 5 gallon pails for the plumbing.

Look at the houses your parents, grandparents and such have lived in. Unless it was a rural farmhouse, it was no where near the McMansions of today.
Really, you have been brainwashed into more consumer/debtor thinking that you need one.
When I first got out of Army and was going through college I lived in 45′ bungalow house with no issue.

On the other hand some of these are way too small.

Save money! 1 part any fabric softener to 3 parts water in a recycled spray bottle works as well or better than Febreze. Nicer scent, too.

There are tons of regulations that prohibit (or at the very least, make it very difficult) the building of tiny houses because of building codes. Building codes have been designed to keep people from building small so that house sizes can be bigger to benefit everyone but the owner, including the government, the banks, the utility companies, etc. . .

The manufacturer of this product was on HGTV/DIY Network at least a year ago flogging it. They are essentially travel homes for camping, adventure seekers or even the cost saving “extra room” for the homeowner who has too many out of towners visiting. It’s like and Airstream in-a-box for the 21st century, just a LOT cheaper all around.

Maaaaaaan, you guys need to read 2084 the search for love hope and faith. This is sooooo like the government mandated housing Newham describes. Crazy. We’re headed that way though. It’ll be more sustainable.

Guess who is going to build them – the same person who is going to own the Railway that replaces the Oil Pipe Line – Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Manufacture Home Division!

You will need one too survive in Obama’s New World – and these little houses come with a Koran – you dare not hang a cross in one – you will be thrown out or killed!

The left loves this stuff, Saves energy, small carbon footprint etc. They want all of us peasants to live like this and ride bicycles. Screw that. My truck is bigger than one of those hovels. This is America, where bigger is still better.

Until you harvest that garden, and discover you have no place to put the canning jars. Oh, and no room in the kitchen to do the canning. And no storage space for the empty jars, or the water bath, or even your gardening tools.
