New Food Rules: A Guide to Your Government-Regulated Diet

As Glenn mentioned on his Fox show this evening, new government regulatory crackdowns on certain foods and beverages across the country are forcibly shaping new dietary habits for many Americans. To make things easier, we thought we’d consolidate and break down a number of the bureaucratic overreaches for you.
How is government working to limit your scrumptious individual liberties? Let us count some of the ways…
- As we’ve reported, officials in Boston, Mass., are contemplating a ban on “sugary” beverages from the vending machines of all city municipal buildings in an attempt to whittle down public employees’ waistlines.
- Likewise, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom used his executive order power to ban sodas and other sugary beverages from public building vending machines, replacing them with diet drinks and soy milk products.
- In a separate executive order, the San Francisco Mayor also single-handedly banned the use of city funds to purchase bottled water. “[Bottled water manufacturers] are making huge amounts of money selling God’s natural resources. Sorry, we’re not going to be part of it,” he said.
- In New York, a Brooklyn Democrat introduced a bill in the state legislature earlier this year to ban the use of salt in restaurant cooking.
- The New York Times dubbed the state of California a “national trendsetter in all matters edible” when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill in July to ban trans fats from the state’s 88,000 restaurants. “Under the new law, trans fats, long linked to health problems, must be excised from restaurant products beginning in 2010, and from all retail baked goods by 2011.” Other places that have banned trans fats include New York City, Philadelphia, Stamford, Conn., and Montgomery County, Md. — a suburb of Washington, D.C.
- In perhaps one of the most outrageous cases of regulations restricting small business, health officials in Oregon shut down 7-year-old Julie Murphy’s roadside lemonade stand in August for failing to secure a $120 “temporary restaurant” license.
- Kids may also be also be getting the shaft in San Francisco where officials are launching a campaign to ban “Happy Meals” or any other meals that come with a toy. The so-called “Healthy Meals Incentive” would ban toys if the food contains too much fat, sugar or salt. It wouldn’t be the first time meal-time toys would be nixed in California; earlier this year, Santa Clara County approved an ordinance “to break the link between unhealthy food and prizes.”
- New York City has banned school bake sale as part of a new wellness policy that also limits options in vending machines and student-run stores. Proceeds from the ventures generally used to help help finance school-related activities like pep rallies and proms.
- Under state laws in Texas, a single piece of candy landed a 10-year-old Brazos Elementary School student in detention for a week in May.
- In May, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent this letter to General Mills, warning that the company’s claims about Cheerios helping to lower cholesterol represent “serious violations” of federal law.
- And in the news today, the state of Florida may become the first in the country to ban chocolate milk from public school cafeterias. The Florida Board of Education voted Tuesday to remove all sugary drinks in schools, including soda and flavored milk. The board is considering allowing only three types of drinks for younger children—water, unsweetened juice and plain, low-fat milk. High school students would be allowed diet sodas and other low-calorie drinks.

I do not take any of the killer drugs that the FDA wants everyone to take to make the Pharmaceutical, the FDA and your Congress richer. I love teaching my students of all ages how to make good meal simple and fast. One thing that really made me mad this week was the bureaucrat in Georgia suing a farmer for growing too many vegetables. That really show how stupid government officials are. And they want to tell me or you how to eat or what to cook. We need to have smaller government with some common senses. Chef Robert here in the Land Of Enchantment.

Posted on September 22, 2010 at 8:21pmThis all comes down to one thing. Government Health Care Takeover. Single payer system coming. If the government is going to pay, control and subsidize your heathcare, then they can have a legal say in your health, meaning what you eat, how often you exercise and every aspect of your life. Pres. Obama has said he is all for the single payer system. How to get that? Take over health care, run the insurance companies out of business ( premiums we can’t afford to pay) and you will BEG for the government health care and think the single payer system is a godsend. What choice will you have when there are no other options?
Report Post »This country is a mess. Now I am being hounded by my insurance company daily and they told me that if I refused to “join” their new mandated healthwise program, I will be dropped. New Health Care takeover orders. How’s that for you? So, what choice does that leave me? We are not being “nudged,“ we are being ”shoved“ and ”Hearded” like cattle into exactly what they planned all along. Oh, they also told me I have to be enrolled, it will be checked to see if I am complying, what my BMI is, my weight and cholesterol and my blood lab work and all medicines prescribed will be monitored to see if it meets new government guidelines and mandates. I am FURIOUS!!! They will have “reports” sent to them, who ever the hell THEM is. Take a guess. My rates are sky high, I am healthy and that was the plan all along..then I have no choice except what they have “chosen” for me. I should be grateful. Thankful. Yeah…thanks all to hell and we will be waving when you drop into that hole. We American taxpayers have a “plan” for you and your cronies too, Obama. Get ready to meet him and take your Aunt with you on the way out..

Posted on September 22, 2010 at 9:49pmIt’s funny you mentioned the “healthwise program” b/c I got a taste of this gem last month. This summer, while on vacation, I needed an emergency appendectomy. The “vampires” at the hospital had a heck of a time starting an IV b/c I have small veins. They’re allowed 2 jabs, but if they use them up they call in another tech and she gets 2 jabs, and so on. A few days later I was released and traveled home; a couple days later I noticed a swelling on my inner elbow, which was one of the spots the tech tried a number of times to insert the IV. I called my local dr. who said it was a blood clot caused by failed IV attempts and to put heat on it for a few days and it would disolve. I followed his directions and it did disappear.
2 weeks later I receive a letter from our insurance company informing me to see the doctor immediately b/c they suspect I have peripheral artery disease based on various tests results and doctor visits. Since I have been very healthy and had none of the symptoms listed on this letter I called them to ask how they reached this conclusion. They put me thru to a nurse and I explained my surgery and the clot. She said to throw the letter out, that the computer only recognized the word blood clot and didn’t know the circumstances.
My point is I only called our local doctor (no office visit) regarding the clot in my arm, but he must have put it in my records. The insurance company has a 3rd party going over the records, supposedly to spot potential health problems. Big brother is watching!

Family recipes some of which I’m told were created from having to make ends meet under Carter will after all these years not be able to taste right with the reformulated blend. Because its not the same flavor nor ingredients. All to respond to Government demands that they reduce the sodium by a minimum arbitrary percentage. Posted on September 22, 2010 at 8:08pmI just have to say that this is absolutely ridiculous. I am a chef, I graduated from Scottsdale Culinary Institute, Le Cordon Bleu, the number one thing that I learned in culinary school was the proper use of salt. Salt enhances the flavor of food, you take salt out of restaurants and you take flavor out of food. Some of the best restaurants in the world are in NY, they wouldn’t be there anymore if this passes.

Posted on September 22, 2010 at 9:13pmDUBBLEARON; you are so right! Salt makes food taste delicious. However, I truely believe that putting you and others out of business, is only a fraction of their sinister plan…they are promoting sugar-free drinks containing “aspartane” which I have read, may not aid in lengthening one’s life span….so much…: ( I tend to agree that pre-packaged foods, as one posting here stated, could be the way to implement this plan. I say this because people who do home-made cooking, would be able to create such yumminess, like my sister’s whoopie pies ; )…other than pre-packaged foods, the only way to monitor what goes on inside one’s kitchen…lol…would be for the gov’t to be able to watch us inside our homes, without our knowledge…I am starting to wonder if it is really “humans” that are making these rules for how we should live? I seriously doubt that these guidelines will be implemented for the elite…except, maybe on the surface, for show!

You go to the grocery store and before your items are scanned, you must give the cashier your “Health & Nutrition” card. When the Mrs. Smith‘s Deep Dish Cherry Pie is scanned a beeping noise is heard and the store is advised they can’t sell that item. Same with Butter, no. Pork Chops, no. Frozen French Fries, no. Posted on September 24, 2010 at 1:09amIt is so true, and we must teach our children the truth. Even as my 8th graders school has embraced the policies for low cal lunches and pushing everyone to be just alike. They do not know what it means to stand up for their beliefs for fear of being Politically incorrect. Her civics homework asked if we should change our policies on immigration. She said no because she did not want to offend anyone even when I tired to explain the risks that our country is facing at this time. This movement has started quietly changing the way our children think eventually they will tell the next generation what they can eat, read, drive, how much TV or Computer time is appropriate and cut of the power to them. The young people of our country do not understand how bad the past was and what can happen in our future. They have not been taught the history. By the way incandescent light bulbs in our small town store went up to $8.00 a box this week. Can’t have what you cannot afford to purchase!

Posted on September 22, 2010 at 9:50pmWE need to hold the free market accountable just like we hold the government accountable.
I agree that the free market has been slowly removing TRANS-FATS from grocery stores and a few restaurants which is good. But I stopped using TRANS-FATS over 7 years ago. Why does it take so long for certain companies to remove them from our food?
How long should we allow restaurants to sell poison in our foods without us knowing about it?
How do we find out when something is bad in our food?
Will every company remove something bad on their on freewill?
I don’t like the fact that California was so desperate for money that Arnold gave a short deadline on the ban. This will allow the government to impose fines on hurting companies who can not make the switch fast enough. Many bakeries and doughnut makers may be fined and even go out of business. This may cost people their jobs. It‘s really messed up isn’t it?

Maybe you should try to immigrate here if you want to smoke, but, I can tell you from experience that it’s a huge waste of money and it will make you very sick, but, hey, here in the U.S.A. you can smoke if you want to. Luckily, the government has placed many regulations on where
people are permitted to smoke, thereby limiting the amount of people’s nasty cigarette smoke I am forced to breathe, and for that I am grateful.

You got the regulations for smoking to go thru and I will be working to cancel some of your rights tomorrow. They caught us in the circle of stealing each others rights.

Posted on September 22, 2010 at 11:22pmthis has been going on in the EU countries for over a decade and it just gets worse. They actually had to have a summit of all the countries to decide what bananas and strawberries look like, how big they are and the color. and the people just shrug and live with it!

Also, “grammar” *winks*
But I’m with you here. What the government decides to sell in their own buildings is theirs to decide. If I just can‘t wait to have a soft drink at the DMV I’ll just bring my own. They’re not FORCED to sell soft drinks in municipal buildings, they’re not FORCED to sell anything. And them not doing it doesn’t infringe on my rights at the least.
The banning of salt is also not really a banning of salt. They ban the use of salt in the kitchen, but if you want some there’ll be salt shakers at every table so you CAN put salt on your food, but you don’t HAVE to. Except for the lemonade stand and the detention for a piece of candy, all those things are total non-issues.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 2:02amI make my own decisions too. I’ve turned into a raging hippie when it comes to the food my family eats. But dang it – the day I CAN’T go to the Hostess store and pig out on a box of Suzi-Q’s I am going to go postal. It’s one thing to choose to eat/drink right – but to have no other choice is like jail. They better not ever take away our chocolate or these loonies will learn the full meaning of the phrase “he** hath no fury like a woman scorned!”

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 2:07amDoes anyone remember the commercial a few years back where a man wearing a trench coat enters a grocery store and starts filling the pockets with various items? It looks at first like he is robbing the place blind. Then as he attempts to leave, the security guard stops him because he forgot his receipt. The man in the coat never stopped to check out. How did the store know what groceries he had or who to charge for them? I think that commercial was a glimpse into the future and its close than we think.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 2:28amThere are many reports on the Internet that aspartame, when heated to more than 85 degrees (which it surely is when diet sodas are shipped all over the country in hot metal trucks and containers) turns to formadehyde. So are you telling me that formaldehyde is better for our children than sugar? I don’t think so. And another thing … I have lived in California. If you hold a glass of tap water up to the light, you can literally see things floating in it. Let the bottled water companies make their money. Put it in the vending machines. Bottled water is a way better choice for my kids to drink than aspartame filled diet sodas, high fructose corn syrup filled juices, and tape water with UFOs in it. I am the parent. Let ME decide.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 5:10amBut the mantra of the dems nationwide has ALWAYS BEEN: We know whats best for you better than you do as you are not smart enough. People who vote democratic refuse to see how democrats take their freedoms away from them and dems end up ‘hurting’ the people who vote for them.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 8:35amThe egg expiration date is inexplicable since I used to buy cold storage eggs that were who knows how old and then keep them in my fridge for months more. No one in my family knew eggs expired and we were all fine.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 8:43am@SmugSmiley: Now, you may consider this quibbling, but in a culinary sense banning the use of salt in the kitchen would be a serious problem. Chefs (unlike politicians) understand that *when* salt is applied matters even more than how much is applied. When seasoned properly during cooking, less salt is needed to achieve the desired level of seasoning than if used strictly at the table. Try cooking pasta or potatoes in unsalted water, and you’ll see what I mean. If you ban salt in the kitchen, say goodbye to spaghetti and meatballs at your favorite Italian joint.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 1:07pmIs this a nudge for food from our government, telling us what we can eat and cannot. We start with food and tell us what kind of cars we have to drive around in. What kind of house to live in or have Levittown come back so we all have the same size houses to live in? What time we have to be off the streets at night. This sure sounds like the start of communism and Marxism to me. Say didn’t Hitler start this way? Indoctrination of our kids. Socialized medicine sounds like a dictator ministration to me. Hope God will save our great country the United States of American.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 4:03pmAs with smoking, the next step will be the government’s ban on the sale of candy in general and for legislation banning “Trick or Treating” on Halloween as contributing to “poor nutrition” in a minor. For our own good and the good of the children they must regulate what we eat, drink, imbibe and if we don‘t they’ll take away our health care.
