New Info: Slain American Tourist Was A Christian Missionary to Jews

JERUSALEM (AP) — An American tourist killed in a forest outside Jerusalem had deep spiritual ties to Israel through her involvement with an evangelical ministry that promotes Christianity among Jews.

Kristine Luken, who was in her mid-40s, was stabbed to death Saturday while hiking with a friend. Israeli police had originally identified her as Christine Logan.

Luken was involved with the “Church’s Ministry among Jewish people,” first in the U.S., then in England, where she became a ministry staffer. The church is active in Israel.

On the CMJ American web site, Luken quoted inspirational poet Minnie Louise Haskins’ words, “Go into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”

A 2007 study tour in Israel, “Walking with Jesus in his Jewish world,” brought Luken to the church, she wrote on the site.

She and Kaye Susan Wilson, a naturalized Israeli from the U.K., became friends on a study tour to Poland earlier this year, the Rev. David Pileggi of CMJ’s Christ Church in Jerusalem said Monday. Luken, an avid hiker, and Wilson, a professional tour guide, decided to go hiking together in Israel during Luken’s Christmas holiday, he said.

On Saturday, the two headed for the wooded hills. Wilson told Israeli reporters from her hospital bed Sunday that she and Luken were attacked by two Arab men with what looked like a bread knife.

She said she escaped to a nearby road after pretending to be dead. Luken’s body, hands bound and bearing multiple stab wounds, was discovered Sunday in the forest.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said authorities were treating the attack as politically motivated, while not ruling out that it could have been criminal.

The forest is inside Israel but close to the border with the West Bank and the Palestinian villages of Husan and Wadi Fukin.

No suspects have been taken into custody. There was no claim of responsibility, which suggests that the assault, even if politically motivated, was likely the work of individuals and not a militant group.

Don Stanley of the church’s head office in Israel said he would put out a statement on behalf of the Luken family later in the day. He said the family did not want Luken’s hometown disclosed.

“”Wilson told Israeli reporters from her hospital bed Sunday that she and Luken were attacked by two Arab men with what looked like a bread knife.”" ????? YEAH, sure……..and then………..she died. I am 99% positive that what she REALLY said was that they were JEWS —not arabs!

These Arabs were practicing their religion in it’s purest form. They were doing exactly
what Mohammad (Satan) commands them to do. Killing both A Christian and a Jew.
They must have the smile of Mohammad (Satan) on them.

I am a Christian, and if walking with my Jewish friend, I would give my life freely to save theirs. Be careful people of your words, for one day you will be held accountable. We can only speculate at this time what the motive was. I only pray, that the people who follow ‘Hate and Evil’, will come to see their wicked ways. I firmly believe that there are good Muslims( I worked with a Mujahadin MD, years ago, he does not believe the radical view side) that will see the light eventually and reject and over throw their erroneous fanatical leaders in time, because they are peaceful. Remember this, there are bad apples in every basket which eventually will be discarded. If they are all bad?, only then will the entire basket be discarded. I hope my old friend is doing what he can to stop, and teach the radicals of Islam, that they are only destroying themselves. There are radical verses in the Bible too, but we are smarter than that, and we have the gift of the new Testament.

Peaceful Muslim? They all believe in the same thing. In the end whether acted upon or not. Sharia law is not just for the extremists. It’s sad they cannot advance past 2000 B.C. well if you discount their advancements in slaughtering devices. No guilt to them murder is redemption for them. Suicidal murder is met with 42 virgins and a mansion in the after life. We really do need to put them in their place. They think they can just topple civilizations and put monuments of their greatness up where they think they have victory.

As sad as it is, why do Americans go hiking around in other countries as if they own the place? They must seem arrogant in the eyes of others. Americans are not appreciated in most countries, it would be wise for Americans to keep that in mind when they travel.

To Libertyluvnmomma: it is not the responsibility of Christians to “convert” Jews – or anyone else for that matter. “Conversion” is the work of the Holy Spirit as He reveals our sinfulness and need for salvation by Jesus Christ. This fundamental misunderstanding of man’s role in the salvation process has done much harm to the Gospel message. Our responsibility as followers of Christ is to speak the truth about Jesus Christ in love to the people that God puts in our lives and to be a living example of God’s love and grace. Only God can change a man’s heart.

Let’s say, for arguments sake, that Muslims did get their dream world and everyone, everywhere, followed Islam. Does anyone believe for one second that this would end the culture of violence propagated by Islam? Of course not, there would just be in-fighting. Shiites would kill Sunnis, Sunnis would kill Shiites, one Mosque or method of worship would not be kosher (no pun intended) with the other group, and the cycle of violence would continue. I‘m not saying that Christians and Jews don’t fight each other, because it does and has happened. But the violence committed by other religions is not in the epidemic numbers associated with followers of Islam, it is not ingrained in our children from birth, and other religions most certainly do not find it acceptable to strap grenades to our innocents in the name of some false and disgusting ideaology (jihad).

It’s a horrible and tragic thing that this young woman was killed here in Israel. My condolences to her family.

I only wish she and her friend had not been on the “mission” to convert the Jews to Christianity. We have many wonderful Christian friends who stand with Israel, unflinchingly, in the face of all the difficulties here. They don’t try to change us, they are our friends. We don’t need people trying to undermine our own Jewish faith by trying to convince (young) Jews to become Christians. It’s really out of place and offensive. You’ve got your faith, we’ve got ours — do I try to missionarize others to become Jews? There’s a lot of other work to be done in this world to bring about better times and to make better human beings, but actively working to convert the Jews really is an offense to God’s children.

I understand your viewpoint, but please understand ours. Jesus came as a Jew; he preached to the Jew first, and he instructed his followers to do the same. Jews who accept Jesus are not giving up their Jewish faith. They see him as the promised Messiah. If you believed Messiah had come, would you not share him with other Jews?

People do not choose where they are born, but they should be able to choose their religion or lack thereof, as long as those beliefs do not violate fundamental human rights. Christians aren’t even allowed to openly proselytize in Israel, so those who do convert to Christianity are doing it out of their own free will, much the same way people in America convert to Judaism. Let them be, Olygal. Christians rejoiced when Israel became a nation, and we pray for the peace of Jerusalem. :)

It is called The Great Commission, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” ~ Matthew 28:19-20

The message is offensive and that is why Jesus said Christians would be hated because the hated Him first. How many times was the apostle Paul whipped, beaten, and pounded for preaching the Gospel?

Kristine Luken was doing what all Christians are commanded to do, share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The message may be offensive, it is done in kindness with open dialogue and communication, and not by force or to cause harm to anyone.

No. This was widely reported in the Israeli media, who are not shy about reporting things as they are. Stabbed is stabbed. They hate Jews and Christians. It is a much under-reported fact (because it is politically incorrect in this country) that the places where Christianity was born, i.e. Nazareth, Beth Lehem, and Jerusalem are being emptied out of Christians because of relentless persecution by Muslims. This also has economic reasons because Christian Arabs are on the average much wealthier than Muslim Arabs as they tend to work harder and be better educated. By forcing them to leave Muslims are taking over properties that have been in Christian hands for centuries.

Amazing isn‘t it how one’s “politics” now over ride everything else, even the brutal murder of a peaceful woman wanting only good for others. Possibly this “blindness” explains why it is “ok” for tens of thousands of missiles to be fired into Israeli civilian areas hoping a few will kill randomly. The Islamists are true believers in “the end justifies the means”. So are some in Ameriica.

Here in America, the Progressives’ media and at least one political party have decided it is “justified” in destroying our economy and the reputations of future opponents by repeating over and over lies and misleading statements if done in the name of their agenda. And once they committed to the road of “the end justifies the means”, tactics deployed in the forest of Israel are but a short distance away.

Agree, but Islam is NOT a “religion”, it is a POLITICAL ideology that bans all real dissent AND CONDONES MURDER of innocent civilians in the name of POLITICS. ‘They’ point to the West’s ‘moral decay’, but ‘they’ enslave more than half of their own citizens by denying women many, and sometimes most basic rights. Better moral decay than outright slavery and oppression.

While we at it, we should probably ban communism and socialism, as they both always lead to fascism.
Fortunately, we have the first amendment to the Constitution which permits free speech and freedom of religion. I’m not quite ready to give those up just yet and thus not yet willing to take those things from others.

Islam is not a peaceful religion. Mohammad said that his followers must kill those who do not believe as they do, whether they want to or not. Their religion was founded on violence. Their entire centuries old history is violence against the West. They see the world divided into two parts – that which has already been conquered by Islam, and that which has yet to be conquered. They believe it is acceptable to lie to the infidel, and that’s in the Koran. Wake up America!

By the same logic people use when they thank God for some good fortune, why no blame for this horrific tragedy? Or is God simply sending a message to the Christians to leave the Jews alone? It certainly makes one stop and think in any event.

We should mourn her passing but we should also celebrate, because she is going to recieve her just reward. Death is only the doorway to glory, for Christians. I always find it far more sad when a none believer dies. How a person dies is irrelevent, it’s where they go after that matters. If someone killed me and I was allowed to come back and speak to them, I would thank them. I would also fight with every inch of my being before that, for life is no idle thing, I would make them earn my death, but I would still thank them if they were able to kill me, because thats when eternity begins, a good thing for a Christian. By the way, condolences and prayers to the family.

Mowdawg, what makes you think I was joking about this tragic affair? The purpose of this forum is for people to share their individual opinions and unique perspectives in order to stimulate thoughtful discussion. It is not a church where free thought is restricted, in spite of the apparent wishes of many of the fundamenatlists here. I have read more racist, ignorant, violent comments here than I ever have on any other forums I’ve visited, but I make an effort to reign in my scorn and disgust as much as possible and try instead to shine some light here. You have somehow missed the point I was making, which is a pity.

AGunAndAPrayer, you say she is with the Lord now? Is that the same Lord that stood by and watched that poor woman get stabbed multiple times until she suffocated on her own blood while her terrified friend listened? I’m not buying it. If you find comfort in believing fantastical tales written by long dead primitive people be my guest. As a logically oriented believer in the scientific method and a free thinker, I’m not buying your brand of religion. No offense intended of course.

Do you have any idea how ignorant you are on Christianity? We all do.
