New Killer Drug Targets Any Virus

Scientists think they’ve developed the ultimate killer. But don’t worry. It’s on your side.

It’s name is DRACO and it could be the next all-inclusive virus killing drug. Scientists at MIT are in the process of developing a drug that identifies and kills cells that have been invaded by a virus, while leaving healthy cells alone.

Scientists Develop Drug that Could Help Kill All Viruses

These microscope images show that DRACO, a virus killing drug developed at MIT, was successful at killing virus-infected cells. (MIT)

Tested against 15 different viruses, the drug proved effective against all of them. First, the drug identifies virus-infected cells by targeting a molecule common in all of them. New Scientist reports:

Nearly every virus generates strings of double-stranded RNA longer than 30 base pairs during transcription and replication, in an attempt to duplicate itself and commandeer its host cell’s machinery. Healthy mammalian cells do not produce double-stranded RNA longer than 23 base pairs.

The body’s own immune system has an enzyme that searches for double-stranded RNA longer than 23 base pairs. When it finds them, it actives the infected cell’s immune response. But some viruses have evolved to outsmart this enzyme.

What Tom Rider and his team at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory did to catch these viruses was pair the aforementioned enzyme that finds abnormal RNA with a protein that triggers cell death. New Scientist goes on:

The drug “catches the virus with its pants down”, by destroying the cell before new viruses have been assembled inside it, explains Rider. Even if fragmented virus molecules escape the obliterated cell, they will be missing the protein coat that helps them to travel between cells, and so will not infect surrounding healthy tissue. Rider calls his drug double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-activated caspase oligomeriser (DRACO).

According to an MIT press release, the scientists initially did testing on human and animal cells, but did use the drug in mice infected with H1N1 as well. The drug cured the mice and left them unharmed. The scientists are moving forward with researching its success on other viruses in mice.

Although results look promising, New Scientists include a couple different perspectives that could pose problems for DRACO in the future.

Andrea Branch of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City thinks the work is intriguing but has some reservations about its practicality. She points out that DRACO is a large protein, which may not enter cells easily.

That said, she agrees that administering DRACO early in an infection could be effective – but adds that destroying all cells infected with the virus can be dangerous in people with advanced viral infections. “Suppose 100 percent of your hepatocytes [liver cells] are infected and you used this – you would die of liver failure.”

Timothy Tellinghuisen of the Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter, Florida, adds that some viruses have evolved ways to conceal their double-stranded RNA, and so could elude DRACO. Still, “this is really an interesting paper, a very clever approach to getting rid of cells containing double-stranded RNA”, he says.

The results of this study are published in Plos One. Rider, the lead scientist for this study is also know for inventing PANACEA, another antivirual therapeutic, and CANARY (Cellular Analysis and Notification of Agtigen Risks and Yields), a sensor for rapid pathogen detection and identification.

Maybe you missed the comment, “The body’s own immune system has an enzyme that searches for double-stranded RNA longer than 23 base pairs. When it finds them, it actives the infected cell’s immune response. But some viruses have evolved to outsmart this enzyme.”

Do you know what word you missed? Read it again. The word is “evolved.” There’s not a word here on this thread questioning “evolution” in this context. Why? Because there’s no connection anyone saw with religion. But the fact is that the concept of evolution is insidiously working it’s way into common thinking. Everyone reads about viruses evolving and accepts it without a thought.

Like the evolution of life, the concept of evolution is surviving as the “fittest” of ideas. You never may never believe it, but your children will. And not them, their children.

Earlier this week, we heard of a possible cure for cancer. Now we have one that looks like it can cure all viruses. Now all that is left is diabetes. Oh yes, they did cure diabetes with direct injections in the pancreas with capsicain (i.e., cayenne pepper), but you don’t ever hear of this anymore. They want people to die folks, so none of these cool ways of healing will ever get implemented otherwise their utopia of population control won’t ever happen. They already got rid of DDT (which kills the misquitos that causes malaria). They gave what most thought was a good excuse but did they really study that well enough? So they tolerate malaria (which kill more then most realize) to keep the population down. Hate to sound paranoid, but may I am a little. Don’t have any hope that these cool novel approaches, especially if they work, will ever get implemented or, it will so only for the control freaks and nothing will go towards the peons like most here are including me. :)

Actually lylejk, the reason none of these cures are on the market is all thanks to your love child Capitalism. Here is how it works,

Getting medication approved costs money – a lot of it (like hundreds of millions of dollars lots).
Capsicain, for example, is not a new chemical or substance; it has existed in its present form for many years.
Because it has existed publicly for so long it cannot be patented.
Since no company can claim sole rights to it via patent license they don’t stand to make a lot of money selling it (since competitors have the option of creating the drug also)
If no company picks it up there is no one to pay for the research to get FDA approval and therefore no way it can ever come to market.

      You have two options.
      1) You remove the FDA and let them sell the drugs without proving they work or guaranteeing safety / liability. Obviously this is not a good idea since the FDA is the only thing making sure the Orange Juice your drink isn’t actually cow pee.

      OR

      2) Get rid of the greedy capitalistic mindset that is encouraging Big Business to let thousands of people die in the name of their bottom line.

So you see, this has nothing to do with population control. It has to do with Capitalist Greed.

      …Did I just make you a socialist?

No; but I agree that pharmaceutical companies have to spend a lot of dough to try to get their drug out. I also agree with you that doctors and pharmaceutical companies rather treat a disease then cure it in order to make more money. I am against greed when that greed affects the livelihood of people and their lives. Still capitalism is moral so long as prudence is considered. People have to bring home the bacon so to speak and that’s the moral thing to do. The problem with pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies is they deal with the devil (the government) way too much. Case in point: Obamacare. That’s my beef with these entities. I still believe (have hope anyway) that people will ultimately do the right thing. But I do put too much faith in my fellow man and maybe that is my problem. :)

Get out of the car and I want my ring back. Walk home after a statement like that.

If God didn’t want there to be horrible, deadly viruses, He wouldn’t have created them @6000′years ago.

I really hope that was sarcasm. This development, if proven safe by human medical standards, could be huge. I’ll be watching this story.

LOL Dunno if you’re being serious or tongue-in-cheek. The “horrible, deadly” part suggests the latter, but I’ve occasionally seen similar arguments offered in perfect sincerity.
Since most online comment threads seem to mostly just be opinion polls, I’ll go ahead and lodge one to the effect of “I don’t think God minds us monkeying around with the medicinal tools He gave us.” Or if He does, then hey, cool… naughty us.
Betting He gets more annoyed by our constant species-wide willingness to go the opposite route, though, with all the oft-indiscriminate killing and burning and stealing and whatnot. But then, I might be wrong about that one, too. (shrug)
Maybe He’ll spell it out to us someday in person, so clearly that our every last question and doubt will be rinsed away. I think that’d be keen.

If you’re a good Christian, does it matter if I’m being serious? If you’re a good Christian, you have to agree.

God’s creation was perfect. He created free will. When adam sinned by eating the fruit, death and suffering started.

God always had a plan for redemption, Jesus Christ. We will have no pain and suffering when Christ comes again for those who ask Him into their hearts.

      > If you’re a good Christian, does it matter if I’m being serious? If you’re a good Christian, you have to agree.

Hardly. I’m a perfectly good Christian who never, ever does anything wrong, ‘coz if I were to sin (as the Bible promises I will, again and again in life), it would automatically negate my Christianity and make me a hypocrite in the eyes of anyone with an axe to grind against Christianity. Especially if their axe is bigger than their capacity to deal in philosophical fairness, which is strangely nearly always the case. (shrug) Humans, right?

Anyway, having established myself as a perfectly pure and pettable Christian whose poop never, ever stinks, I now exercise my right and ability to disagree!

Except for the one problem that I kinda actually *do* agree. Yes, viruses and whatnot do indeed exist within the boundaries of God’s will, if only ‘coz *everything* that exists does so by His sufferance. Q.E.D.

Everything, to include the tools to fight illness. Which brings us to the question of your point.
