New Low? MSNBCs Bashir Uses Steve Jobs Death to Blast Sarah Palin

While it is no secret MSNBC‘s Martin Bashir isn’t a fan of Sarah Palin and that he’ll take just about any opportunity to lambast the former Alaska governor, many critics are arguing that the host sunk to a new low Thursday when he used the tragic, and, untimely death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs as a springboard for his latest Palin-attack.

In his “Clear the Air” segment, Bashir attempted to juxtapose Palin‘s decision not to run for president in 2012 with Jobs’ passing. For Bashir, Jobs represented “the very best of American exceptionalism” while Palin embodies “the very worst form of American opportunism.”

Mediaite adds:

In today’s segment, he compared the lives and contributions of two disparate, and contrasting, public figures, both of whom were in the news yesterday, though for very different reasons. Sarah Palin announced that she would not be running for President came along with the sad news of Steve Jobs death. Oddly, Bashir saw the death of the Apple founder as a means to score political points against Palin. Too soon? It will always be too soon for this sort of comparison.

Regardless of what you might think of Sarah Palin or Steve Jobs, the comparison of why, and how, they were in the news yesterday is an odd angle at best. To use the career and impact of Jobs — of which Bashir is understandably a huge fan — as a means to slam Palin feels both inappropriate, and counter to the intelligent world that Jobs aimed to create.

“Today, we’ve marked two important stories. The tragic and sad passing of a true creative genius at the age of just 56, and hopefully the end of a charade that’s been going on for three years,” Bashir said — the “charade” for Bashir, of course, was Palin’s.

“One individual represents the very best of American exceptionalism: brilliant, determined, creative. The other represents the very worst form of American opportunism: vacuous, crass, and according to almost every biographer, vindictive, too.”

Bashir didn’t stop there, however. He added:

He [Jobs] played himself to the very end, casually dressed and solely focused on producing product after product that would literally transform culture, information, and our social interactions. Over the last three years, she created nothing, produced nothing, and served no one but herself.

And while the vast majority of consumers have expressed high levels of satisfaction with the products he produced, imagine how her most ardent followers must feel today. They were misled into buying ghost-written and vainglorious books that attempted to create the illusion of leadership and character. They bought tickets to see a documentary that ignored facts and was a celluloid whitewash of her life. Even on the day she confirmed what all of us knew, that she wouldn’t be running for president, she still dropped a video asking for more donations. Amazing.

Bashir concluded the segment by saying that although Jobs’ death coincided with Palin’s announcement, “it has been a helpful accident of fate,” namely because, according to Bashir, “it allows us to realize and commemorate the greatness of one’s individual’s contribution, and the utter futility of the other.”

Mediaite provides the MSNBC clip of Bashir’s latest foot-in-mouth moment:

At ABC’s Nightline, Bashir must have been on a serious leash. That or he is now going out of his way to be am over the top provocateur at MSNBC. It’s almost as if you are watching an actor playing roles in two different movies. I suspect he has been tasked with filling the shoes of Keith Olbermann and try to get back the full out whack job crowd that bought whatever he was selling. Will the real Martin Bashir please stand up?

But Marty left out a third element in the day’s tableau. That of the whiny, peurile, bitchy TV host (on a network barely watched) who’s contribution to society is even less than what he attributes to Palin. Just a snotty, bitter little boy, spitting and hissing at a figure that has left her impression on American history while little Marty spits and hisses away “full of sound and fury..in the end signifying nothing”.
See the difference Marty? Palin is American history now, she’s one for the books, while you’re just a TV compare with a limited shelf life and an even more limited audience. Sucks to be a bitter little liberal TV host doesn’t it Marty?

That is despicable just like using his death to hit Palin.

The comparison is apples and oranges, and the timing is bad. As far as I can tell everything he said was true. But comparing a man who didn’t so much as foresee the future as create it, with a half-term Governor and former mayor of a tiny town with little claim to fame except being selected to run with McCain in the last presidential election, is simply apples and oranges. There is no comparison.

    Martin…you are such a joke.

Someone as pro-liberal, pro-wealth distribution as yourself, who now calls Jobs “the very best of American exceptionalism: brilliant, determined, creative…”.

That American exceptionalism and determined, creative work, enabled Jobs to have a $90 million Gulfstream Jet. And despite the $1/year salary, was worth over $1 billion…just in Apple stock.

So you are praising hard work, which enabled him to be rich, but then calling for the redistribution of that wealth to those who lack the “American exceptionalism” and the “briliance” and “creativity” that enable such wealth?

Time to brace the hips and give your shoulders a tug.

Indeed. And what do we know of Steve Jobs’ life? We know he was a great innovater and business man, but that is all I know of him. Is he a good dad? Does he give to charity? Is he humble? There is so much more to a human’s worth that their product. I have nothing bad to say about Mr. Jobs, but I do not venerate him either.

I am with you, I care less about Steve Jobs. Sure, it is sad he dies young, but so did my Dad this past year. My Dad was a great man, who worked in Steel Mills to raise 5 kids. Then, when labor ran the Steel industry over seas, or was it that incredible tax hike the Dem’s pushed on corporations ??, I don’t know, but my old man was able to adapt and find a low paying job in sales. There he worked his way up until he was top sales man of his district. I don’t know what Steve Jobs did, but I find it ridiculous the media has tried to spell this out as some terribly sad event. It is a misfortune, but not to the tune these people play it. The things they boast about are also the very things that I could easily make a well supported argument are the things causing this world to come unhinged. I never had any of the Apple products because I couldn’t afford them. I never owned even one single apple product in my life. So what does that say ?? What a sick piece of garbage you are Martin. You worship this man only because he was the godfather of ways and means not to deal with yourself. All of you intellects have to constantly keep yourself distracted so that you don’t even have a single second to reflect on what a real piece of worthless garbage you have become. You are so twisted there Martin, I really hope you become stuck with yourself, with out your many means and ways of distraction, and be forced to pay the piper. You hate Palin because she reminds you of this fact.
