President Barack Obama has a new ad out aimed at convincing Americans that Republican candidate Mitt Romney would raise their taxes. In an effort to reach the middle class, the ad (which actually uses the words “middle class” three times during its 31-second run) attempts to drive a wedge between the wealthy and those of more modest means.
Politico has more about the spot, which was released just one day before the Democratic National Convention (DNC) kicks off. In keeping with Obama’s campaign rhetoric, it takes aim at Romney’s proposed tax policies:
The ad — which the Obama campaign says is airing in Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia — relies on analysis from the Tax Policy Center to make the claim that Romney would up the middle-class tax burden. Romney and conservative economists have vigorously disputed that analysis, arguing that it relies on false assumptions about the changes Romney would be willing to make to certain tax deductions. The fact that Romney hasn’t detailed how he would pay for his proposed tax plan, however, makes it a target for Democrats to shoot at, which is what the Obama campaign’s doing right now.
“The middle class is carrying a heavy load in America, but Mitt Romney doesn’t see it,” the spot begins. “Under the Romney plan, a middle class family will pay an average of up to $2,000 more a year in taxes, while at the same time giving multimillionaires like himself a $250,000 tax cut.”
After invoking the “multimillionaires” reference, it continues, with the narrator dramatically proclaiming (while working in a reference to Obama’s campaign slogan), “So, Romney hits the middle class harder and gives millionaires an even bigger break. Is that the way forward for America?”

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 4:57pmWhat criteria is used to determine what class a person is in, and who established that criteria? If half of all Americans don’t even pay income tax (some even get tax credits), are they all considered low class?

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 4:35pm“‘Hit the Middle Class Harder’” Operative word HARDER. All you middle-classers out there employed or unemployed who favour Obama should note this phrasing. Obama is going to hit you hard with higher taxes no matter how you look at it. So if times are difficult with $5gal/gas and high milk and food prices what will you do when you are hit with higher taxes and a sick economy. Words have meaning folks and he did say he will be HARD on the middle class (if not harder).

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 10:14amToo accuse Romney of wanting to “hit the middle class harder”, is tantamount to admitting that
YOU’VE ALREADY HIT THEM HARD. Thanks for nothing, Gaybama.
You may think that Romney may not be the best representative the Republicans could have selected. At least I know what religion he is, and that he won’t desecrate the flag, bow down to foreign powers, or practice fiscal irresponsibility. I know he has the ability to turn this financial debacle that the current regime has gotten us into. We won’t like all the things necessary to recover from this debt, but someone with Romney’s background can do it. But, on the minus side, he never was a “Community Organizer”, never took drugs or smoked pot, never got drunk, did not associate with communists or terrorists, nor did he attend a church whose pastor called for God to damn the US. Just TOO MANY “negatives” for a “progressive” Lib or Leftist to support him…

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 9:52amThe rich are already paying more than their fair share of the taxes. The problem is the spending and wastefulness. Obama is already stealing from the middle class’s pocket by printing money and making the dollar worth less~~~~~Whether you call it a tax or not, most of us have noticed the increase in prices of everything! Romney is frugal and smart and has promised not to increase the tax or burden on the middle class. Obama’s promises have never been fulfilled so he has a proven record of hurting the middle class (all the while selling them on how he is their best friend~what a crock!)

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 9:47amI don’t see liberal (Obama) spending and crony capitalism as a solution to America’s economic problems.. I see it as a path to Socialism and Big Government Dependency.. The fact is taxes will go up one plan or the other.. It’s just a matter of deciding what you want to pay for European Socialism or American Freedom and Values..
Report Post »jujubeebee
Posted on September 3, 2012 at 9:54amCut every government program and eliminate some and you won’t have to increase taxes. Romney will do it. Obama increases spending on everything. Eliminate Obamacare!

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 9:47amThe Economy went UP & WORSE under Obama.
He’s surpassed blaming GW Bush and has implied it goes further back!
HOW FAR BACK does it need to go to CLEAR HIM? To George Washington?
He must think we are Sad & Seriously Stupid People to believe ANYTHING from him.
He can say he had LOT’S to deal with in 2008 OR spent too much time on ObamaCare
or whatever – FACT IS – he wanted the Job, said he could do it BETTER –
PLUS Presidents MUST be able to do more than ONE THING AT A TIME.
A Presidents JOB IS TO MAINTAIN a healthy Economy, Military, etc.-
NOT set them aside & BUY AUTO INDUSTRIES, BAILS OUT BANKS, ETC.
Nor is it to stir up controversy, discord, divide, deceive, disrupt or declare Welfare,
Racial or Religious Wars on the People or Institutions.
He’s done everything EXCEPT his Constitutional duty.
It’s NEVER been his desire to improve the Economy.
2008
Unemployment rate -Dec. 2008 = 7.3%
2012
Unemployment rate is currently 8.3%.
* Black Unemployment – ABSOLUTE HIGHEST. * 16%
Question, “Are we better off today than 4 Yrs. ago?
Axelrod said, “We’re in a BETTER POSITION than 4 yrs. ago”.
A “BETTER POSITION” for what?
A Controlled Government Take Over -bringing the Economy AND the People
under its control FOR SOCIALISM?
A “Better Position” for Redistribution of Wealth? NOPE!
If that was true, it still would be NO DIFFERENCE. PROBLEMS remain.
Obama‘s gotta’ GO!

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 9:45am@13th and SOY. You’re both right. Like 13th said i believe (more like hope) Romney will run the business of US in a manner (ie: deregulation, tax stability and predictability) that will stimulate more revenue…. but SOYs point is valid as well- We need massive spending cuts. Mostly on entitlements but also some in the military. You‘re both ignoring the fact that either scenario is impossible without Congress getting it’s crap together. If they’re still split we are doomed.

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 9:00amRomney is an ivy league power monger whose main political aim is to crown his ruthless careeer by reaching the highest office in the land,he doen’t give a fiddlers f#!k about the middle class outside of what he can glean from them, this being said it will be in his interest to keep them employed so maybe he’s worth a shot.Either way,if you are a working guy one way or another your’e going to take it up the rumper because that is the obvious trickle down formula that keeps a society on the move.As long as you have a computer and can afford pay your internet provider you really can‘t be doing that bad and if you had the president that you wanted you would only be miserable because it’s much more fun to have a dig at someone than to praise them.

Politicians in both parties suck. None of them are angels
“And of what kind are the men that will strive for this profitable preeminence,…It will NOT be the wise and moderate, the lovers of peace and good order, the men fittest for the trust. It will be the bold and the violent, the men of strong passions and indefatigable activity in the selfish pursuits. These will thrust themselves into your government, and be your rulers”

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 8:37amit is a little odd that Romney will be keeping Bush tax cuts and then adding more tax cuts while increasing military budget. Romney has not said where he will cut spending in order to pay for them – which presumably means he will add it to the national debt. Someone could say that it would be offset by growth, but in this economy that is hoping for A LOT

Posted on September 3, 2012 at 8:56amIt’s simple. When Mitt create‘s the atmosphere where job creators start new business’s, more tax revenue will flood in. Remember Ronald Reagan? That’s why Barry failed. A president like the socialist Obarry, can’t create jobs, but a boil like him has no clue why. A whole party like the DEMOCRATS never create jobs. Go Figure
