New Poll: 62% of Likely Voters Oppose Raising Debt Ceiling

An overwhelming 62 percent of likely voters oppose raising the debt ceiling, while only 27 percent favor raising it, a new poll by The Hill reveals.
Opposition is strongest amongst Republicans and independents, but even more Democrats oppose the measure than support it:
Seventy-seven percent of likely GOP voters and 64 percent of independent voters said they don’t want the debt ceiling to be raised. Even among Democrats, more oppose raising the ceiling (46 percent) than support it (42 percent).
The poll also shows that a majority of the country disaproves of the president’s stimulus package:
Only 36 percent of voters surveyed said stimulus spending creates jobs, while 48 percent said flatly that it does not. Crucially, 61 percent of independent voters took that negative view.
Only 40 percent of likely voters say the $787 billion stimulus package helped. While 69 percent of Democrats say it boosted growth, 56 percent of independents think the stimulus hurt or had no impact on the economy.
The president’s budget, due Feb. 14, will call for more spending on infrastructure, research and development and education. The polls suggest the public is unreceptive to the idea, so Obama might find it tough to get these budget requests through a Republican House clamoring for deep cuts.
The president is also losing critical independent voters regarding his economic policies in general:
Voters split on Obama’s economic policies. Forty-four percent in the survey said the policies are hurting the economy, while 41 percent said they are helping. The poll’s margin of error is 3 percent.
By a 47-37 percent margin, independents said Obama has hindered the economic recovery.
Raising or lowering the debt ceiling has prominent conservatives split. Some, such as Glenn Beck, say not raising it would be detrimental to the United States and its credit. Others, such as Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), oppose raising it on fiscal responsibility grounds, saying that doing so would be an excuse for more irresponsible government spending.

Posted on February 7, 2011 at 10:28amC’mon now, we HAVE to raise the debt ceiling, so “Oblah de Oblah da” can “steal” Ronnie Raygun’s so-called “legacy” and triple the debt held by the public to 18.9 trillion, from 6.3 trillion in debt the public held when Soetoro took office.
Reagan tripled the debt held by the public from 711 billion or so to 2.1 trillion.
Reagan started the trillion dollar debt game, and Obama would love to finish it and take some credit for putting us further into debt than Raygun did.
They all take pride in destroying the United States afterall.

Posted on February 7, 2011 at 10:23amAlready discussed this. Sen. Toomey (R) Pa has a Bill that would direct the US Treasury to pay the interest on the debt keeping it from default while Congress works out necessary budget cuts. (1) 1/20/2011 – WSJ – ‘Freezing the Debt Ceiling Without Risking Default’ (2) – 2/11/2011 – Slate – ‘Toomey’s Debt Ceiling Doomsday Bill’ -“Full Faith And Credit Act” (3) 1/19/2011 – Hill‘s Blog by Michael O’Brien – ‘Toomey’s Compromise On Raising The Debt Ceiling’
Unlike others in Obama’s administration, Sen. Toomey is a smart, no-nonsense, successful businessman, and a wise lawyer. I like his Full Faith And Credit Act – it solves the problem now of getting things paid without risking default and it forces Congress to address this issue while doing necessary cuts.

Posted on February 7, 2011 at 10:16amLet’s cut spending!!!!!!!! I agree with Walker1812, everything needs to be reduced. There are NO sacred cows. That includes the entitlement programs. Perhaps we need to take a look at why so many NON-elderly folks are receiving SS payments. It wasn’t meant to be processed that way. I’m sorry folks, but the money was supposed to go to the elderly in their retirement years and not to every child who loses a parent. We have to face facts. We cannot continue paying out like this.

Posted on February 7, 2011 at 11:20amIt also pays for people who claim their kids are ADD. Why should we take on their responsiblity? Why should they take my money from my kid, just because your kid cannot sit still for a minute? My M-I-L was a kindergarten teacher and saw these mothers desperately trying to get their kids tagged as ADD, so they would get more benefits. These useless eaters are a drain on our society and sometimes it is infectious.
Report Post »I know a family, whose daughter was dating one of these useless eaters. This useless eater’s family lives on welfare and infected her mind with this way of thinking and she purposefully got pregnant, in order to sign up for the benefits that unwed mothers get. This is just in a small town. Just imagine what happens in large cities. I am not without compassion, but if someone is perfectly capable of working, then by GOD, work. I am 42% disabled and am STILL working, full time, to provide for my family, because I have a sense of responsibility and a work ethic.
There is nothing, these days, of a feeling called shame.

We have to offset the spending with cuts.. start with PENSIONS for the government.. go to pay decreases of 10% across the board for the politicians..move on to pork and continue to discretionary if he has NO where to go you don’t need to spend it .. cut off foreign aid to countries who are corrupt..than go to Welfare.. cut them everything from cash to food stamps.. do NOT allow them to get more money for ANY kids they have from the time they started receiving government hand outs.. If they continue to have kids to gain more money and food stamps and are whining they can’t feed their kids put the kids in foster care.. it will take 2 years until people wise up and quit having kids they can’t afford.. reduce welfare by $100 a month each family for Medicaid like they do for SENIORS.. who have to pay $100 a month for their Medicare..(which only covers 80% unlike Medicaid which covers 100%)..

Posted on February 7, 2011 at 9:59amGood! We should oppose it. Please take the time today, or very soon, to make sure your legislators are aware of this poll and of your personal feelings on this matter. The Congress is going to try to ignore this until March and then they are going to claim it’s “too late” and it’s a “crisis” and the only option is to raise the debt ceiling. Both Parties are guilty of doing just that in the past, not just the Dems. We’ve got to keep this in front of them if we expect them to do what is right. Sen. Paul’s bill, S162, is a great place to START with needed spending reductions. Please tell your senators to support it and get it passed. And once that‘s passed they need to get into cutting in SS and the 2 Medi’s next.

Posted on February 7, 2011 at 10:03amListen to a very simple idea for the debt ceiling limit: If they do decide on raising it, have the needed limit raise matched by a two to one or higher spending cut, backed by legislation with teeth. The time is long past to get the house of the nation in order, put it on a diet from the hog wild spending that is going on for generations now.
We either have to suffer some prevenative pain now, or face the major detriments of what will come down the road.
Also remember, the progressives seek to collapse the system, and to break the dollar, this will be just one more means of doing so – figure they default on the debt, and start another massive release of dollars into the market…sianara to the value of the dollar and of the America we now know of.

Posted on February 7, 2011 at 11:14amIf you don’t raise the limit, we default on our debts, foreign and domestic. If that happens, the dollar loses ‘reserve’ status, and eventually collapses. As you know, the worlds oil, gas, gold, etc, is priced in the KING dollar, that will no longer be the case. The cost of everything will skyrocket, unemployment will grow, and wages become stagnant – Stagflation. And we sink in a sea of red ink, and barrels full of dollars to buy a loaf of bread. Bad scenario.
If we raise the debt limit, we will be downgraded by the ratings agencies across the board, which will inturn drive up interest rates, already climbing as a result of new bubbles forming, from stimulus! There is a whole new wave of Arms about to reset, nice timing huh? The same things will happen, but from a debt standpoint, we will see hyperinflation, followed by the dollar collapsing, due to QE squared, the dollar then being backed by land, and the Chinese buy us out, anyone speak Mandarin?
Then on top of all of that, we have world civil unrest, due to water and food shortages, boarder wars, and the like. Iran will turn out to be a huge problem very soon, unless they have an internal revolt, pray for that to happen, that would be the miracle we need.
So my dear friends, it’s party time over, and learn how to be self sufficient, how to survive, nothing I see looks very promising. No way we can pay off $14 trillion in debt?

You make a very good common sense point. It is also the most logical approach…But you are a smart guy…You know this will never happen. Your philosophy has been proposed and even promised by previous administrations….but it has never been adhered to. The fix is in. The country is gone. We are just watching the unfolding of the progressive plan hour by hour and day by day. An additionnal point: By the time we hear in the news about a new regulation and/or law from this Administration, rest asured is already packaged and in place…ready to go. They just report it in the news as a matter of rote.
Bottom line: Spending is out of control and no one is willing to step up and confront the monster. We will eventually bear the brunt of the worse case scenario you have alluded to in your post. Correct…they are going to collapse the system. It is inevitable without a resistance. And I see none on the horizon.
