New Poll: Do Americans Now Dissaprove of Occupy Wall St?

Quinnipiac University is well known for conducting polls that are regularly featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal.

Recently, they conducted a poll that, contrary to the common narrative, reveals more voters disapprove of the Occupy Wherever movement than support it.

“Just 30 percent of Americans have a favorable view of the protests, while 39 percent do not,” reports Business Insider. “Among independent voters, the spread is 29-42 against — a warning sign for Democrats who are trying to bring the movement into the mainstream.”

This shows a marked change from a recent CNN poll that claimed “32 percent of Americans supported the movement, while 29 percent viewed it unfavorably.”

As always, whenever these polls come along, it may be prudent to take the results with a grain of salt.

As written earlier on The Blaze:

Polls are not definitive by any means and usually only give a rough picture. In fact, there are several problems that need to be considered before one accepts the results of any poll. For example, there may be a problem with the sample design (for telephone surveys, how the numbers were selected and how the individuals are selected within the household), non-availability, the refusal problem (is the refusal rate different on the particular variable we are measuring?), question wording, question order, deliberate, or unconscious, lying or false reporting by respondents, or inappropriate or inadequate weighing of data.

All of these variables have been shown in various studies to be the source of not just small errors but sometimes quite substantial ones. Unfortunately, there are not many methods that allow one to quantify the effects of these errors or to validate the results within any kind of reasonable measure. Out of everything that can go wrong in a survey, only the “sampling error” can be quantified.

So what methods did Quinnipiac use?

According to their survey:

From October 25 – 31, Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,294 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.1 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

Therefore, the Quinnipiac poll may have some of the aforementioned survey errors. Nevertheless, the results are intriguing (to say the least).

Support for the Occupy Wall Street movement appears to fall along one cultural line — college graduates have positive views of the movement almost as much as they have negative views, by a 38-42 margin,” writes Business Insider. “Among those without a college degree, 26 percent support the movement, while 37 percent oppose.”

The survey also claims that support for the Occupy movement is almost identical to the support for the tea party movement at nearly identical 31 percent–although, according to the survey, 45 percent of Americans have an “unfavorable view” of the tea party movement.

Furthermore, the survey found that respondents without college degrees are “less likely to hold unfavorable views of the tea party (39 percent unfavorable) than college graduates (57 percent).”

Shocker.

Other findings include:

  • 59 – 32 percent [believe] immigration reform should primarily move towards stronger enforcement rather than integrating illegal immigrants into U.S. society
  • American voters were split 45 – 44 percent on whether the U.S. did the right thing using military force in Libya. A total of 54 percent give President Obama “a lot” or “some” credit for bringing down Gadhafi.
  • 60 percent of respondents disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling the economy
  • 61 percent of respondents approve of the way Barack Obama is handling the situation in Iraq
  • 62 percent of respondents disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling creating jobs

See the poll here: November 3, 2011 – U.S. Voters Say Super Committee Will Fail To Cut Debt, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Occupy Wall Street Less Unpopular Than Tea Party

[Author's note: it might be useful to point out the the title of the survey seems biased. Rather than titling the report in such a way as to reflect the waning support for OWS, the authors thought it better to say, "Hey, well at least it's not as unpopular as the tea party!"]

When did America approve anytime of occupy Wall Street? The only people pushing this has been the media, gleefully, and so they are probably “the Americans” that approve of it…..but then when did the media ever agree with America?

Critics of the OWSers kept saying that it would degenerate in to violence…this week they were vindicated. It will only get worse for OWS from here. One positive aspect though is all the democrats who’ve latched onto the stinky OWSers will now have to explain themselves come election time.

Unions… .why would union members join the occupy movement? I mean, these occupy dimwits want banks and Wall Street to fail … they want to shut them down, reboot the system. But, if banks and Wall Street fail, will not their retirements, 401Ks, stocks, options also fail? Will they not lose everything they’ve worked for? Are union members really THAT stupid that they cannot see what they are asking for will bit them in their own arse and hard?

When did Americans decide that only their side is Constitutional and worth supporting? Whether you agree with their ideas or not is immaterial to their right to peaceful protest. So, yes, 30% of Americans are thinking correctly. Which leaves you in which camp?
Oh, wait- you’ve already said their Constitutional Rights are not valid. My oops. No need to ask what you think.
Why aren’t you among them handing out copies of the Constitution and explaining to them why they are protesting for the wrong reasons? or are you just going to complain because their thinking is wrong?

Regardless their illogic reasons, they have the right to be there protesting whatever they desire. In fact, I think there should be hundreds of those who disapprove this activity to be out there explaining in Constitutional terms why these people are wrong in their demands and handing out copies of the Declaration of Independance, the Constitution and Bill of Rights to every person protesting.
Seriously: they obviously didn’t learn in school why they are expected to work and not be given everything, so it’s up to those who know to explain it to them.

I am with you on all of the above! As far as the OWS go I think reality has started to set in and allot of people are afraid of the violence. When they hear the insane comments spewing out of the protesters mouths and see their destructive , filthy, and violent behavior coming out of these people , hard working Americans just do not like it. The repubs need to seize this opportunity as an example of the progressive agenda and what it means to our way of life. Many people are already nervous after listening to the last several speeches of our president who is calling for violence and seems to be dividing the races. This is not working for the dems. When the list of supporters grows and the players are known it has forced more people to stop and think. They have to face some cold hard facts and they have to start paying more attention.

Before the violence in Oakland, CNN had a special “Occupy” section and ran such insipid articles as “A day in the life of a Wall Street protester.” Now, articles about the riots in Oakland are conspicuously missing. The only article there at this moment is a soft news story titled “How Occupy Oakland Is Stealing Occupy Wall Street’s Mojo.” Really? Arson, destruction of property and riot-like mayhem is now dismissed as “mojo?” What frauds and charlatans! I’m much more against media propaganda than corporate greed.

However most people don‘t like protesting regardless of what it’s for, we have been conditioned to dislike it because they Left has done so much of it. Just like the term racist has been used so much that it does not carry the same weight it once did. But if these people start burning down homes and businesses and attacking innocent people around the country you won’t need a poll to know how Americans feel about it you will see it for yourself just by looking out your window.

Polls, or votes, tend to illustrate the will of the people. Polls, and votes, can be manipulated; still, it’s better to poll to get the lay of the land, as it were, and guage the will prior to a vote. Perhaps polls should be done away with, and just go with a vote. Then the surprise could be complete. But, the surprise may not be what the Left would desire.

Sadly, it doesn’t matter that the tea party gatherings over the last three years had not a one. The damn media and DC did their dirty work back then smearing us so that the typical person thinks there really was racism, violence and disorder. I remember being shocked as the opinion polls gradually went down on approval ratings thinking, ‘holy crap, people really don’t see what the media is doing?’.
That is exactly why the LSM and DC have been pushing from the start of OWS that it’s like the tea party. So when the violence starts they associate us with them in the minds of the average person and be turned off by both.
