New Pro-Obama Ad Implies: Romney Is Kind of Responsible for My Wife’s Death

The pro-Obama PAC “Priorities USA” on Tuesday released a scathing new ad accusing Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney of being kinda’-sorta’ responsible for the death of the wife of a steel worker laid off by Bain Capital:

“I don’t think Mitt Romney understands what he’s done to people’s lives by closing the plant,” said Joe Soptic, a former employee at GST Steel in Kansas City.

He explains that because he lost his healthcare, he couldn’t afford to take care of his sick wife.

“I don’t know how long she was sick, and I think maybe she didn’t say anything because she knew that we couldn’t afford the insurance,” Soptic adds.

By the time they got her to a hospital, the ad notes, they discovered that she had stage-four cancer. Shortly thereafter, she died.

“I do not think Mitt Romney realizes what he’s done to anyone, and furthermore I do not think Mitt Romney is concerned,” Soptic concludes.

Of course, as tragic and sad as the story is, do we really need to keep pointing out that Romney was not managing Bain Capital when this happened? (And its also worth noting that the same man appeared in an ad in May.)

The ad, according to Romney spokesman Ryan Williams, is just another in a long line of “discredited and dishonest attacks” meant to “conceal the administration’s deplorable economic record.”

UPDATE: The Washington Post’s Fact Checker thinks this ad falls into a “gray area” rather than being laugh-out-loud ridiculous.

“We have given the Obama campaign Pinocchios for blaming Romney for Bain deals that took place entirely after he left for the Olympics gig. This case is a different matter,” writes Glenn Kessler.

“It falls into a gray area, because the investment and many key decisions were made while Romney was running Bain, as he has acknowledged — even if the denouement came when he was no longer in charge. Romney, in fact, in the past has tried to claim credit for jobs created at companies years after he left Bain, so it’s no surprise the Obama campaign would try to tag him for job losses,” he adds.

Really? A “gray area”? The ad implies Romney is partly responsible for the death of Soptic’s wife! A “gray area”? Do we need to mention that the man’s wife passed away in 2006, seven years after Romney left Bain?

UPDATE II: The entire ad is a giant steaming pile of bunko. Not only did Soptic’s wife pass away seven years after Romney left Bain, but she also had “health insurance through her own employer after her husband was terminated,” as Legal Insurrection notes.

Back when Team Obama launched its baseless “Romney Could Totally be a Felon” campaign, we wondered how far they were willing to go to win this election. With this latest ad implying Romney is somehow responsible for a woman’s death, it looks like we found our answer.

      First of all, Romney left Bain 6 years before the plant closed down. He had nothing to do with the plant closing. Second, I don’t think this man understands what he did to his own wife. The plant he worked at did not owe him a lifetime job with benefits. If they can’t make a profit, they must close. It’s as simple as that. It‘s this man’s responsibility to take care of his family, not the company or Bain Capital. By sitting on his rear end and not going out and finding another job with benefits, this man is responsible for the death of his own wife. His lazy rear end killed her…..sure as the sun rises.

      Oh Boo-Hoo, so your wife got sick and passed away 7 years after Romney left Bain? You liars are making me sick. Romney had nothing to do with it. Your company was in bad shape and you’d have lost your jobs years earlier. Bain is in business to save companies, not lose them.

      BTW: I’ve never depended on a company to buy my health insurance. We bought and paid for our own family’s insurance all these years and did not depend on a business to buy it for us. So, why didn’t you buy health insurance when your company went out of biz?
      Or did you live from paycheck to paycheck? That‘s your choice if that’s what happened. Smart people try to save for a rainy day. Sorry about your wife, but I‘m sure it’s wasn‘t Romney’s fault, as much as you’d like to blame him. How much are they paying you for it?

      I’m sure some of those non-union Delphi retirees who lost their entire pensions for the sole reason of not being a union member probably got cancer and died, too. I’m sure some of them were depending on their “guaranteed” pension savings to live on and to provide for their spouses in their golden years. You know, the money they saved? So can we blame Odumber and Geithner for those people getting sick, losing their homes and their independence, and possibly a few deaths? Of course not. That would be racist. (snark)

      Well let’s see HORSEDIDDLER…..Romney left Bain in 1999 to handle the 2002 Winter Olympics.
      So this guy is saying that since leaving Bain in 1999… Romney magically closed his company down (even though Romney wasn’t making Bain company decisions- which is verified by the SEC)..and so he was unable to find any other employment in the 5 years between when GST Steel filed bankruptcy in 2001 and his wife’s death ..so that in 2006 his wife died as a result of his inability to find another job..and her inability to understand that she may have been seriously ill. And of course Soptic throws in a little conjecture stating that he wasn‘t sure that his wife remained silent about a serious illness because he wasn’t employed to cover them…for 5 years straight. And why not..it makes Soptic look all the more pitiable and Romney more heartless and of course..that’s the desired effect no?

      Oh and again GST Steel Kansas filed bankruptcy in 2001. Ok..so ..Romney leaves in 1999 and already immersed in the Olympics by 2001, GST Steel files bankruptcy in 2001..So that’s 1999..2001 Again…1999..2001. Is math a weak point for you HORSEDIDDLER?

      Have you been unemployed for 5 years straight HORSEDIDDLER? Ok..under Barack Obama that‘s a distinct possiblilty if he’s re-elected I’ll grant you that.

      Actually, this guy killed his wife. Had he and his fellow workers (probably union) done a better job the business would have remained viable and the plant would not have closed. Or better yet, if they would have lived a more healthy lifestyle she would not have contracted cancer in the first place. She died because she voted democrat, that is the real message from this ad.

      How many jobs were not created or lost or lives badly touched because of Obama’s policies on Oil Drilling in the Gulf, Keystone Pipleline, and Coal Mines to name a few.     This is BS. She died 5 yrs after he left Bain. He had Cobra health care available. I also lost my job at that time and the government made Cobra available. If this man wants to blame someone he needs to look in the mirror first.

    President Obama would have FINED him for not having health insurance or would have made him pay for health care he had no money for! Will Obama Care cure stage 4 cancer? Obama Care would have not covered her because her cancer was too far along and Obama Care would have claimed she was too old for the treatment risk benefit.

    But it is okay for Obama to gut health care reform.

      By the time they found she had stage four cancer (must have never went to the doctor for checkups that would cost about $75.00 out of pocket) it was too late and she died quickly. Having multiple people in my family die of cancer – She died with in the same year they found her stage four cancer. As in diagnosed and died in 2006. Long after Bain but do not let facts get in the way of a good narrative.

      Also, Bankrupt companies or companies in general are not “responsible” for peoples standard of living or care. If this guy wanted the Company he worked for to stay open so he could have Insurance – He should have paid the Companies BILLs or bought the Company so it could. Since this guy failed to purchase the Company and keep it open – he is responsible for all those people that lost their jobs and his wife’s death. Dont you love Liberal Logic…..We can all play ignoramus too all day….

      The ad was complete BS. If Bain hadn’t bought GST Steel, then GST steel would have gone under in 1993. That was the original owners choices, sell or go under. So if nothing else Bain gave the workers 8 more years of paychecks and health coverage than they would have had. So why didn’t Soptic take advantage?

And like THE NUGE, I find it unfathma. . . unfathaimana . . . hard to believe that a company could be worth more to a leverage investor if pushed into insolvency. But yet it can be so. You see, investors don’t make their profits based on the products the company sells. They make their profits on the manipulation of debt. Workers are considered part of the debt structure of a company, not part of the asset structure. Rough math suggest in most Bain investments Romney’s profit was as high as $20K per laid off worker.       I‘m glad you brought up workers are part of an employer’s liablilties HORSEDIDDLER/ENCINOM/MONICNE/SLEAZY HIPPO….because Obamacare has certainly added to the cost of those liablities…and so here were are at 8.3% unemployment. But wait…that number is only reflecting the reduced workforce under Barack Obama isn’t it champ?
      The underemployment rate is actually closer to 15%..the highest since WWII.
      Oh but here’s the best part HORSEDIDDLER/ENCINOM/MONICNE/SLEAZY HIPPO….Obama is still nearly a million jobs in the hole..he hasn’t even created an environment to get back the jobs we lost from the mortgage meltdown.

    So if a business is failing, by his standards, it should remain open and he should keep his job and health insurance because…? Because it is feel good nonsense. He is not entitled to a job and is not entitled to health insurance. People die every day for a variety of reasons and it must be horrible for him that he lost his wife but no business owner should ever be forced to remain operable so that employees can have insurance or lunch money or, you fill in the blank.

    My heart and prayers are for your loss. However, it is wrong to blame another individual for everything that happens in our lives. Cancer is a terrible thing and extremely painful not only for the patient but for the whole family and friends.

    Sometimes business have to close even though employers try to keep them open as long as they can. They just can’t afford to stay open if it is not profitable. Employers just can’t furnish everything for the employee forever and so we have to make sure we have what we need since it is for us and nobody else.

    Again, It is our lives and we should be responsible for our own lives. We want the insurance we may have to give up something else to get it. Life doesn’t always give us a lifetime guarantee for a job or anything so be prepared. I have always been an employee but I did not spend more then what I received. Budgeting is important especially if you have unexpected illness, etc. God Bless all

      Few points.
      A. He did not know she had cancer until it was too late. No matter of care would have stopped her death at stage four. Also, how was it they were able to get care for the last days of her life?
      B. He “assumes” she knew but “just did not say anything” the whole time because he “assumes” she “felt” they could not afford insurance. Typical lefty agenda based on “feelings” and “assumptions” with no verified facts.
      C. If a company is Bankrupt – who keeps it open? How are the bills paid?
      D. Why was this woman not on Medicaid? It was available for her condition or did the couple just have too much money and assets to qualify that would have paid for the private insurance?

      You would have to be ignorant and a useful idiot to believe this ad that’s based on “feelings”. You would have to be an Obama voter.

      E: His wife was employed and had health insurance coverage benifits paid by her employer while Hubby was laid off.

      Once this fact is widely known this latest smear should serve to shine a light back on those that made the Ad in the first place…using a man that had previously been in another Ad back in May attacking Romney for shutting the plant down (even though he was no longer at Bain when the plant was closed).

      Finally the exec at Bain that made the decision to shut the plant down is an Obama campaign bundler and a Democrat.

      I’m amazed that the Axlerod machine is continuing to shoot itself in the foot like this……..they have nothing on Romney is my only conclusion. Desperate lies is what it looks like.

    My understanding of the purpose of Bain Capital was to help businesses that had a chance and liquidate others that were too far gone. I’m curious to wonder why in the world someone could be oblivious to their surroundings. If the company was that far in trouble, he only has himself to blame for staying on a sinking ship that pulled him under.

    As far as his wife’s story is concerned – it’s sad, but essentially a non issue in terms of Romney and Bain Capital.

      and there my friend is the focus of the whole argument….a union steel worker, is blaming a capitalist, for closing his FAILING plant, why was it failing? could it be that it was no longer profitable? Could it be that the Labor was to expensive? the one thing these socialists fail to explain , and maybe because they have no clue, is that the if the company would have made more money by staying open…it would still be open …since that what those “evil capitalists ” are after MONEY. LOL why dont you ask the 20,000 + non union workers at gm/delphi who got screwed out of their retirement…why the union workers got nothing cut? even came out of the deal part owners of the companies. letting gm go under and restructure would have broken the chains of the unions on our auto industry, instead obama and geithner insured they came out gleaming on that one.

    They have no one to blame, but themselves. When they WERE working and had insurance, she should have gotten herself checked out. Even after they lost insurance, she was eligible for Medicaid. Hospitals do not turn people away (unless Michelle works there) because it is illegal to turn someone away. They work something out. My unemployed brother-in-law just went to a hospital, because he couldn’t breathe very well. They worked out a deal for indigent people to make payments.

    This is the crap time after time. Insurance or no insurance, many lung cancers, usually caused by smoking, are found serendipitously and late in the course. No one at Bain gave his wife cancer. No one at Bain kept her from seeking care earlier. They made the decisions, and as is so common now, they seek to place blame on anyone but themselves. He’s a loser.

    you would have been layed off anyway. how could you blame romney for her death. there are lots of people without insurance. romney saved a lot of jobs for lots of companies. if a company is not making a profit they have to close. only government jobs are secure. get a grip. and besides 1 out of 1 die.

      Hmm, thats right SKimmer, but why didn’t this guy purchase the company before Bain? That way it would have stayed open and he could have kept his insurance. It must have been a real money maker – he could have been rich. Since this guy failed to keep his place of employment open by paying their bills and payroll – he is responsible for all those people loosing their jobs and his wifes death.

      An Obama bundler made that deal skummer…Romney was long when that decision was made that and this mans wife was employed with health benifits provided by her employer after he was laid off. She had coverage for HC but let’s not have any facts (that would expose this sham for what it is ) get in the way of a good smear/lie.

He just made out like a bandit being paid handsomely for his wife’s death. One wonders if he would have helped her along sooner if he knew of the riches Obama was going to throw his way.
