New Sex Ed Standards Call for Homosexuality to Be Explained to 5th Graders

New Education Standards Teach About Homosexuality & MoreWASHINGTON (AP) — Young elementary school students should use the proper names for body parts and, by the end of fifth grade, know that sexual orientation is “the romantic attraction of an individual to someone of the same gender or a different gender,” according to new sexual education guidelines released Monday by a coalition of health and education groups.

The non-binding recommendations to states and school districts seek to encourage age-appropriate discussions about sex, bullying and healthy relationships – starting with a foundation even before second grade.

By presenting minimum standards that schools can use to formulate school curriculums for each age level, the groups hope that schools can build a sequential foundation that in the long term will better help teens as they grow into adults.

Experts say schools across America are inconsistent in how they address such sensitive topics

Despite awareness of bullying, for example, Debra Hauser, president of Advocates for Youth, one of the groups involved with creating the standards, said some schools don’t address it – or at least not in relation to sexual orientation or gender identity, which is where she said a lot of the bullying occurs.

“They should tackle it head on,” Hauser said.

Consequences to parents deciding not to vaccinate?

The percentage of students not having all vaccinations required for attendance is on the rise in some states. (Photo: South Mountain Villager)

Other organizations involved with the release include the American Association of Health Education, the American School Health Association, the National Education Association – Health Information Network, the Society of State Leaders of Health and Physical Education, and the Future of Sex Education Initiative. The latest suggestions were already drawing less enthusiastic reactions from some.

By the end of second grade, the guidelines say students should use the correct body part names for the male and female anatomy, and also understand that all living things reproduce and that all people have the right to not be touched if they don’t want to be. They also say young elementary school kids should be able to identity different kinds of family structures and explain why bullying and teasing are wrong.

Beyond lessons about puberty by the end of fifth grade, the guidelines say students should be able to define sexual harassment and abuse.

When they leave middle school, they should be able to differentiate between gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation, according to the guidelines. And the say they should be able to explain why a rape victim is not at fault, know about bullying and dating violence and describe the signs and impacts of sexually transmitted diseases.

New Education Standards Teach About Homosexuality & More

It calls for high school graduates to evaluate the effectiveness of abstinence, condoms and other “safer sex methods” and know how emergency contraception works.

It’s unclear how much influence the recommendations will have among educators.

Cora Collette Breuner, a pediatrics professor at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics committee on adolescence who was not involved in the creation of the standards, praised the approach of encouraging discussions at an early age.

“The data points that trying to cover this stuff when kids have already formulated their own opinions and biases by the time they’re in middle and high school, it’s too late,” Breuner said.

New Education Standards Teach About Homosexuality & More

Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Education Abstinence Association, said she does not agree with the topics and goals of the standards. Like the anti-smoking campaign of the last few decades that has had success, abstinence should be the focus of such programs, she said.

“This should be a program about health, rather than agendas that have nothing to do with optimal sexual health decision-making,” Huber said. “Controversial topics are best reserved for conversations between parent and child, not in the classroom.”

Federal funding for abstinence-centered education funded by a Republican Congress in the late 1990s and later under President George W. Bush has largely gone by the wayside under the Obama administration, which has had a shift in focus to teen pregnancy prevention programs.

@Rigel orion…thats where you’re wrong. My children get taught scripture at school even though its a public school, even though it has a vast mix of children from families of different religions, even though I believe the bible is nothing more than a poorly written fictional tale. The difference is that I have strived to teach my kids about morals, respect and ethical behaviour and I don‘t try to pretend that things I don’t agree with, don’t exist.
Whether you like it or not, people are always going to have sex, there is always going to be homosexuals and everybody has a bottom. You have the right to disagree but if you choose to hide these things from your kids you will end up with a sandusky victim or a Bristol Palin unmarried teenage mother.

Depending on where you live, this has always been the case. Most public schools in Florida, for example, are absolutely terrible. However, some of them (like Stanton College Prep in Jacksonville or Suncoast Community in Riviera Beach) are among the best in the entire country.

Wonder why the news media doesn’t report about the dangers in this lifestyle??? How about that recent release from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services which found that gay and lesbian students (and those who have sex only with a person of the same gender had higher risks than heterosexual students in seven of 10 major health risk categories. Bisexual students had higher risks than heterosexual students in eight of the 10 categories. Then we look at what’s happening at the local level. 70% of all cases of chlamydia in Washington State are in the 15-24 age group; Genital herpes among 12- to 19-year-old whites is now five times higher than it was 20 years ago; 15-19 year old women and 20-24 year old men have the highest rates of gonorrhea in the U.S. This may be, as recent research shows, that the adolescent brain leads teenagers into high-risk behavior, and that young “gays” are increasingly engaging in unsafe sex. Then you look at other research on the “Gay” lifestyle that found that homosexual males and females both tended to score higher on scales of psychological distress than did their heterosexual counterparts. This holds true in both “Gay” friendly countries as well as those countries that hold more traditional values. Further, these folks were found to be more likely to have used recreational drugs and to have inflicted deliberate harm upon themselves.

Do you think that schools should be forbidden from teaching facts that you wish weren’t facts? Are you for harassing gays? Do you think it should be the school’s job to teach your kids your opinions about the subject no matter how many people disagree with that opinion? Is it just homosexuality, or should they never teach anything about any subject that people have differing opinions about?

      It’s just….

let the moral equivalency begin. I think Satan’s favorite phrases probably begin with “it’s just…”

As a matter of school policy, harassment of any kind should not be tolerated. Anyone bullying or harassing others for any reason obviously has too much free time at school and should be punished or expelled. Simply enforcing this policy successfully teaches the moral of treating others with respect without having to get into all the other B.S.

They don’t need to define sexuality, describe what constitutes a homosexual or define differing sexual identities. That isn’t the role of the school system. Of course, that isn‘t what Progressive’s want, their goal is to indoctrinate kids to their social viewpoints, so simply doing their primary job would be way too easy

So you agree that we should take vending machines out of schools? Stop feeding junk food in cafeterias that is promoting a diabetes epidemic among youth? Me too. Then again, STDs are not unique to gay people. But they are dangers to everyone. So we should work together to inform and protect our children – fairly, responsibly and honestly – and not cover their ears and act like it doesn’t exist, leaving them to learn of its existence by contraction rather than education.

You either agree with me, like it sounds you should, or you take the redneck route of covering their ears and acting like reality doesn’t exist.

I will teach them that being gay is a sin and leads to a miserably destructive life and your chance of getting an STD is dramatically increased. I will teach them that liberals like you are immoral slackers and infanticidal heathens, he!! bent on the destruction of America, avoid them like the plague!

“The Government” does not put vending machi9nes in schools; does not put them there to devastate children, and is not compelled to do so by the Vending Machine Mafia.

Can you therefore see the difference between your little girl analogy (which is not technically an ‘analogy’ since it in no way relates to the subject at hand) and the government taking it in the rump from the gay mafia, being compelled to devastate the lives of countless innocent children, and demanding the installation of gay mafia recruitment stations in all Kindergartens throughout our fair land?

Although the simple answer to Moderation’s question is YES. A parent has the right to instill their morals in their children. Why? Because its their children and its their job to instruct them.

Moderation, YOU have the right to teach your children whatever twisted morals you want. As soon as you don’t mind dropping your children off at a church for them to indoctrinate your kids about the abomination you are, you can go ahead and call others out for having a problem with liberal sexual indoctrination at school

“Really, exactly what would you call a person who believes it is okay to teach small children about an@l sex?” . . .

I have been wondering for years (NOT) why homosexuals feel the need to “recruit” if they are “born” that way. Truth is, they’re not – and they know it.

I recall, a few years ago, my 14 year old nephew told me that his teacher asked all the students to self identify as straight or gay. The ones who self-identified as straight were given a test. Thest test basically was a recruitment tool to coerce then to “try” homosexuality, i.e. most questions came down to: How do you know you’re straight unless you “try” being gay.

HIs teacher had told them all NOT to tell their parents about the test. Being his aunt, he felt he was not breaking the rules by telling me. I can’t tell you how shocked I was that this was happening here in Virginia. I, of course, told his mother.

In 1997, a study of 5,402 homeschool students from 1,657 families was released. It was entitled, “Strengths of Their Own: Home Schoolers Across America.” The study demonstrated that homeschoolers, on the average, out-performed their counterparts in the public schools by 30 to 37 percentile points in all subjects. A significant finding when analyzing the data for 8th graders was the evidence that homeschoolers who are homeschooled two or more years score substantially higher than students who have been homeschooled one year or less. The new homeschoolers were scoring on the average in the 59th percentile compared to students homeschooled the last two or more years who scored between 86th and 92nd percentile.

Infact many who are homeschooled end up skipping grades, and entering College earlier than those who go through regular methods.

Keep in mind not all homeschool parents are ‘religious’ nor are all ‘private schools’. They just tend to have higher standards than what is required in the public schools for education that counts!

@Bernbart – Actually, what you are stating is factually incorrect. Home-schooled children score much higher on state mandated tests than public school children – BY A CONSIDERAL PERCENTAGE! Most home-schooled children, as a matter of fact, enter college much better prepared scholastically than their public school counterparts who must, in most cases, take an entire year of remedial classes to catch up to freshman college level.

Almost all of the children in my church are home-schooled. I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to encounter POLITE and PLEASANT children who respect their elders and each other.

As a teacher, when I had students who had been homeschooled before I had them, they were usually ahead of the other kids. I suggest you actually look up some of the statistics on homeschooled kids before you say it as a “disservice”. I am sure since parents are human that there are some who do a poor job, but I think the larger percentage do an exceptional job. They even band together to provice socializing for the kids, sports, field trips. Parents sometimes take a group of kids to teach a lesson about a subject in which they are particularly well-versed. I taught in public schools for years, but if I still had schoolage kids, I would homeschool, even if I had to sacrifice financially to do so.

If you teach your kids at home they will never be smarter than you are, which is what all good parents want. The only real answer is to teach your kids and let other people teach them, too. This will mean that they end up deciding that they don’t share some of your opinions, but you know what? That’s going to happen anyway, no matter how hard you try to delay it. You just have to have enough faith in them and yourself to think that in the long run your beliefs about the important stuff can hold up in the marketplace of ideas. The school system shouldn’t be teaching sexuality. Period. You read the litany of ‘recommendations’ coming out for schools each year and its no wonder that our schools can’t compete. Seriously, this BS isn’t going to help our kids compete in a global marketplace, but its continually crammed down their throats.

      @RIGEL_ORION

By your belief in a God, you then say there are NO absolutes in life. You are subject to whatever God says and if he changes that, you then have to change your view. Nothing about God is absolute as demonstrated in the Bible. Why do you no longer think eating shellfish is an abomination? Because either you OR your god decided that it’s not rational and thus no longer needed to be adhered to. Either way, that’s not absolute.

Religious believers don’t have morals, they have obedience to what they think God said.

Why would Abraham attempt to kill Isaac to obey God? Because he thought it was in God’s will that he wanted him to kill his child, irrespective to whether or not God stopped him.

If at any point, anything says to me “prove your belief in me and sacrifice your child” I would say, “no, screw you.” Abraham thought that it was part of God’s will that he wanted him to sacrifice Isaac. Let’s not forget how much rape, theft, and murder God has ordained, but then again that’s God doing it, so it’s just and righteous.

By your justification, if there came out irrefutable evidence that God didn’t exist, you are saying that you would have NO REASON not to rape or kill anybody you see. That is illogical and I hope you can see that.

I say no thank you. I will take morals that are reasoned, well thought out, and rational and try to do the least amount of harm to people.

Same-sex attraction (SSA) is a conditioned *compensatory* emotional response. The person lacks a sense of self and identity and feels a strong need for completion, feels difficulty identifying and discomfort and rejection in relating with his or her own sex. Sometimes there is a rejection or fear of his or her own sex. Usually these feelings are due to deficits, rejection, abandonment trauma in life experiences.

A good book to read is Shame and Attachment Loss by Joseph Nicolosi, PhD who has worked primarily with males who experience SSA for many years. NARTH has a lot of articles and a referral service for therapists and support groups as does Exodus. Lack of love causes our deficits and distresses and love – God’s redeeming love and the healthy love of others, heals us.

I would gladly homeschool them but current laws, at last check, said a custodial parent has to be the primary teacher. Otherwise, they are forced to send their children to public schools, unless they are able to afford private schooling. They will have to attend public schools so that they can (sarcasm font on) Lern to spel reel gud lik Bernbart. But hey, they will know all about homosexuality

Mr. Bernbart, I have posted this many times on the blog. For health reasons in particular there is a number one rule to remember. No stool on the tool, it is dirty and nasty. Prove me wrong and I will stop posting rule number one.
I have a friend who has a gay son. He, the son, is a lawyer. When he introduces himself he says,”Hi my name is Bill and I’m a gay lawyer.” Why do most gays want to shove their lifestyle down others throat? Not long ago the son was working on his car bending over engine. He turned to his dad and said I haven’t been bent over like this in quite a while. He said that to make his dad feel uncomfortable. Very sad. He rubs it in his dad’s face about dressing like a girl knowing it breaks his fathers heart. This is wrong in everyway.

I am also glad my parents did the smae with me. I can not imagine going through school today when you might learn the basics of reading, writing and math after your daily indoctrination into the homosexual lifestyle, anti-thiestic, global warming, floating ethical standards world that the baby boomers are trying to impose on this generation.
Bible says something about “woe unto those who call the evil good and the good evil” and ‘better to have a millstone tied around your neck and be cast into the sea, than to destroy a child‘s faith’. Paraphrasing a little, don’t have my Bible handy.
This is the world that through apathy of many and a proactive effort of a few, we have allowed to be created.

@Bernbart – the left are the best bullies of all. I’ve heard cases where they teach these little ones to be gay – those that claim they are gay are treated as “special” and celebrated in class. When they get older they discover they are straight. They are then told they are in denial. They feel trapped and more often than not kill themselves out of desparation. It is the left that has caused this – not the right.

They said that they would be taught a definition of sexual preference in terms of “romantic attraction.” The schools have never and probably will never get around to teaching kids what sex is before they find out on their own. They can read about it if they read, they hear about it from older kids and they hear about it from kids their own age who hear about it from older kids or from parents who think it is important to teach their kids about it before they hear about it on their own. And, yes, these days that includes knowing what homosexuality is while some of their parents are trying to pretend it’s not something they need to know about.

    Third Action…

    Rational basis for what exactly?

A rational basis for opposing gay marriage? It’s not the role or is it proper for the state to attempt to redefine an institution that it co-opted for legal and stability purposes. If the State wants to re-codify marriage as a Civil or State Union and now make these Unions the ‘spousal contract’ issued by the state, that’s one thing. But for the State to effectively be used as a weapon to demonstrate that Religion was wrong about homosexuality and therefore it must change Marriage….is blatantly wrong.

Find a gay activist and float the idea of EVERYONE having a Civil Union and Marriages simply being a religious distinction and ceremony. Their reaction will prove my point.

The rational basis for the school thing? Our schools are crumbling because we waste our time with this type of social engineering nonsense. Severely punishing any bullying or harassment, regardless of subject, is all a school needs to do. The only lesson? Treat and respect others as you’d want to be treated. Leave the sex out of it. Spend less time trying to point out, justify and explain all the differences in people and more time teaching the core skills everyone needs to know.
