‘New Way of Looking at the Sun’: See It in ‘Extreme Ultraviolet Light’ to Show Solar Plasma

Here is one of NASA’s latest videos of the surface of the sun — but it’s not just any video showing coronal mass ejections. This video was shot using a specific “extreme ultraviolet light” to best showcase the plasma in the sun’s atmosphere, also known as the corona.

The corona reaches 600,000 Kelvin. In case you have forgotten sophomore chemistry, 273.16K is equivalent to 32.02 degrees F. To figure out the equivalent of Kelvins to degrees Fahrenheit an you multiply Kelvins by (9/5) and then subtract 459. The temperature of the corona is 1,079,540.33 degrees F.
Check out the video, which Gizmodo describes as “our sun like you have never seen it before:”
According to NASA’s description, “there is no scientific value” to the image processing that was used to enhance the structures in this video, but “it does result in a beautiful, new way of looking at the sun.”
In the video, the loops you see are plasma “held in place by magnetic fields,” according to NASA. In visible light, these are considered sunspots.

Liberals love to claim that you can’t put a price on knowledge (even though no knowledge was gained from this), but I say you can! I’d love to know how much this video cost us.

Posted on May 26, 2012 at 10:07amI’m pretty sure that this is more along the lines of “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?” territory. But seriously, you do know that air is made up of gases right? The sun is a huge mass of gas, plasma, and maybe some liquid at the core under all that pressure. That said, sound waves travel through all matter so it wouldn’t matter if the sun were solid. It would still make sounds when masses were driven together and vibrated.

Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 0 degrees on the Celsius scale. At 32 Fahrenheit and 0 Celsius, the temperature in Kelvin is 273.15 (not degrees though, just 273.15). At absolute zero, the temperature in Kelvin would be zero. You see, the Kelvin system is a shifting of the Celsius system so that instead of ice formation at sea level being the standard for 0, absolute zero is the standard for zero.
So when they said the corona of the sun is 600,000 Kelvin, it would be 600,273.15 Celsius or more than a million degrees Fahrenheit. Not just above freezing.

Posted on May 26, 2012 at 10:29amWhat I find funny about the big bang is how so many people ignorantly excuse the fact that the verse is infinitely large and that “the big bang” is one of many, not the only one. Unless you imagine ourselves as living inside of a glass aquarium, then you should realize that space is endless and goes on forever. Now, that said, there should be more than one “universe” if only consider our universe what we can observe and what was originally ejected from our big bang.
I guess what I am trying to say is that even the “scientific” guys underestimate the vastness of our reality and are limited to a narrow view of the world. Just like the creationists that they argue. Personally, I believe that a God does exist and I base this off of the fact that I cannot possibly fathom how elements and molecules can transform from an inanimate mass into a sentient life like a human being. The thought that this could happen without a higher power is almost akin to philosophers thinking that frogs used to spring from rocks. I don’t believe in something from nothing basically.
But mind you, I seriously doubt that any religion on this earth has it even close to right.

God isn’t stupid, and if there were any important things, like evolution, or cancer causing UV light that were real and effected humans, it would be in the Bible, which is basically a science textbook and includes all you need to know about science.
These guys might be able to sucker the liberals but if it‘s not in the Bible it’s irreligious crap that will send you to the underworld. to be ruled for eternity by Hades (actually that’s Greek mythology, but you know what I mean, the Biblical equivalent).

Whether that something is God, the first life form, or matter itself, there is always a point when something springs from nothing in both arguments. So try not to sound so high and mighty about your beliefs because some day some where, someone will prove you wrong. And the same goes to creationists and bible thumpers.

SGTB, you are correct. You’re more perceptive than many here.
As far as you metaphysical argument, you have a point and you expressed it well. Your understanding is rare for this website. Yes, what happened before the universe sprang into being, or at the moment the universe came to be, is unknown and probably unknowable .
But here’s my question to you. Is it more believable that tiny bits of matter, quarks or whatever, sprang into existence, or an omniscient, omnipotent being? The second hypothesis is that an incredibly complex being was the starting point. That idea is that the universe began, not with simple things, but with the most complex being imaginable, one with infinite power and infinite knowledge. A being so powerful it can create matter, time and space. A being that goes on to create the Earth and humans to worship Him (and if they don’t, they’re in trouble). Doesn’t seem a little odd that God, one who could create the universe, with trillions of galaxies, would get ticked if some guy didn’t worship him?
The alternative hypothesis is that a huge number of little bits of matter came from nowhere. That’s a simpler hypothesis.
