New York City Goes Wild at News of OBL Death

NEW YORK (AP) — Americans gathered in jubilant crowds to cheer, sing and applaud early Monday after the president announced that Osama bin Laden was killed, including hundreds gathered at ground zero where the twin towers once stood in Lower Manhattan.
Many there waved American flags or took pictures. The group broke into spontaneous cheers and song, including a rendition of Lee Greenwood’s “I’m Proud to be an American.”
Farther uptown in Times Square, dozens stood together on the clear spring night, making calls and snapping photos. An FDNY SUV drove by and flashed its lights and sounded its siren, and the crowd broke into applause. A man held an American flag and others sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
And in Washington, D.C., a large group gathered in front of the White House to celebrate, chanting “USA! USA!” and waving American flags. The throng had filled the street in front and was spilling into Lafayette Park.
Will Ditto, 25, a legislative aide, said he was getting ready to go to bed Sunday night when his mom called him with the news. He decided to leave his home on Capitol Hill and join the crowd. As he rode the subway to the White House, he told fellow passengers the news.
“It’s huge,” he said. “It’s a great day to be an American.”
George Washington University student Alex Washofsky, 20, and his roommate Dan Fallon, 20, joined the crowd.
“George Bush said, ‘Bring him to justice, dead or alive,’ and we did it,” said Washofsky, a junior and a member of the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps.
The crowd began gathering before President Barack Obama addressed the nation at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday. By midnight, people had filled a street directly in front of the White House and the celebration was spilling over into Lafayette Park to the north.
Some people sprinted up on foot to join the crowd. Others arrived on bicycles, and some people brought dogs.
American flags of all sizes were being held aloft, worn draped over the shoulders or gripped by many hands for a group wave. Some people climbed trees and lampposts to better display the flags they carried. Others without flags simply pumped their fists in the air.
The impromptu street party took on aspects of a pep rally, at times. Some people offered up the “hey, hey, good-bye” sing-song chant more typically used to send defeated teams off to their locker rooms. And Parth Chauhan, 20, a sophomore at George Washington University, trumpeted a vuvuzela.
In Dearborn, Mich., a, heavily Middle Eastern suburb that‘s home to one of the nation’s largest Arab and Muslim communities, a small crowd gathered outside City Hall, chanting “USA” and waving American flags.
Across town, some honked their car horns as they drove along the main street where most of the Arab-American restaurants and shops are located.
At the Arabica Café, the big screen TVs that normally show sports were all turned to news about bin Laden.
Café manager Mohamed Kobeissi says it’s finally justice for those victims.
In Philadelphia, at a game between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, chants of “USA! USA!” began in the top of the ninth inning at Citizens Bank Park. Fans could be seen all over the stadium checking their phones and sharing the news.

Fox earlier said they will be using “familial DNA”. “They” say that Osama was “identified” using body “photographs” to identify him. They also have just reported at a little after 3:00 am that it is confirmed that Osama has been “buried” at sea and they have given the appropriate islamic law treatment to his body. (so quickly???). The taking heads are now saying how this will now bring the entire united states together and that this is a collective victory for our country. It is, they say, a tremendous political victory for Obama. They do not anticipate the release of any photographs of his death because “they” say it would/could be used as a rallying point by his supporters and used to incite violence.
Why do I have a very bad feeling in the bottom of my gut? Why does none of this make sense? Why does the time line not make sense? Obama said he knew this location for awhile…
Timing is everything….. and there are no coincidences with this administration. Stay alert! Something is coming.
Watching the people in the streets and the singing of praise to obama (and hearing obamas words themselves — i urge you to listen to his speech again)… I can’t help but ask myself…is this how a dictatorship begins?

This also brings some form of closure to those who lost family members during 9-11.
I do feel we have all the reason in the world to celebrate this, however we must not forget to remain vigilant and watch the other hand. It is very doubtful this will help Barry’s poll numbers. What’s he going to say? His draw-down of forces is the reason we found him?

I’ll repeat the message I put elsewhere in an OBL article, I would love to have been an “angel” on the wall to see bin Laden’s face when he met God instead of allah, and when he learned that his reward was not 72 virgins but to spend eternity in the “hell” of the unredeemed and unrepentent.

Glad to hear it when people help out our troops like that; the food bank where I volunteer here in Phx helps a lot of veterans and some active soldiers families, mostly reservists called up for duty. We help them whatever we can, they have put it on the line for us so it is the least we can do to return the favor as we can.

You are welcome, glad I could give someone a laugh; and yes a little off track for me normally, just understand I have a very simple dealing in this matter – now the account is settled thakfully – I lost several good friends and associates in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and in Afghanistan afterward.
One of them who died that day was Kimiko, my fiance, she was on top of the second tower and on the phone with me when she said “God NO!!!” and I saw the tower come down with my whole world that morning.
Wish I could have been there when Bin Lauden went away for good.

The death of OBL is a good thing. I agree! But when I see all the hoopla on TV and read all the posts here and elsewhere, I am reminded of how the Arabs act when they kill some people they consider ‘infidels’. Having a street party and passing out candy and celebrating death. We see that in the news and we are upset by it. Call them barbarians. I realize there is a difference between killing innocent men, women and children and killing someone responsible for such horrors, like OBL. But still, dancing in the streets and all the fanfare and ugly comments over the death of one man who, really, is only symbolic of the terrorism and hate in the world today, nine and a half years after 9/11? I am glad that OBL is gone. Do I feel like throwing a Superbowl type party, whacking a OBL pinata? Do I feel some sense of patriotism over the 11yr overdue death of madman? Do I feel like voting for Obama? Do I feel like things will be better because of OBL’s untimely death?……..No. Not really.
Taking out OBL was justified and long overdue. It was justice being served. But do I feel like acting like the same people we call barbarians, partying over the killing some ‘infidels’?….. No not really!
Someone posted that we should put OBL’s head on a stick and place it at Ground Zero. So we should do the same kind of barbaric things they do? “We will show them”?
I believe, as a whole, we are a better, more civilized people than radical Islam. Though not without our own faults. But the display I see going on last night and today over the justifiable death of OBL is not a shining example of that…………IMHO!
