New York Health Department Ads Link Increased Soda Consumption to Leg Amputations

On the heels of the controversial childhood obesity ad campaign we’ve reported on in Georgia, the New York Department of Heath and Mental Hygiene has also rolled out a new campaign that is ruffling the feathers of some for its portrayal of soda size leading health issues like leg amputations.
The ad in question states “Portions have grown. So has Type 2 diabetes, which can lead to amputations”. In the ad is an obese individual who has had a leg amputation and a graphic showing the growth of soda portion sizes.
The New York Times reports that American Beverage Association takes issue with ad, stating that it does not accurately represent the connection between serving size and obesity:
“Portion control is indeed an important piece of the solution to obesity,” said Stefan Friedman, a spokesman for the association. “But instead of utilizing scare tactics, the beverage industry is offering real solutions like smaller portioned containers and calorie labels that show the number of calories in the full container, right up front, to help people choose products and sizes that are right for them and their families.”
In 2009, during a legislative battle over taxing sodas, the health department produced ads that showed a pile of yellow fat on a place-setting and warned that drinking a can of soda a day “can make you 10 pounds fatter a year.” Last year, the New York Times reported that there had been a “protracted dispute” within the department about scientific validity of that claim.
According to Reuters, City Health Commissioner Thomas Farley said disturbing images were chosen for the campaign to “drive home a point.”
Soda isn’t the only product called out for increased portion sizes; fries and hamburgers make an appearance in the ads as well. The department points out that in the last 50 years serving sizes of soda have quadrupled and french fries have tripled.
The “hard-hitting” campaign, which began releasing ads on Monday, is seeking to help New Yorkers think twice about their portion sizes as nearly 57 percent of adults and two out of every five children are considered overweight or obese.

Posted on January 11, 2012 at 11:14amThat’s nothing. They have infested the children and cartoons so much it isn’t even funny. I was listening to some cartoon over the holiday as background and actually stopped what I was doing to hear the character say, “Don’t throw that kleenex in the garbage, you can recycle it even with snot on it.”
How about outlawing the fake sugars causing the problems? Think about it for a second. A soda filled with sugar causes diabetes, yet in order to stabilize the sugar spikes in a diabetic’s diet, they eat a piece of fruit. High fructose corn syrup (fermented, hydrogenated corn starch, HFCS), not sugar. Yeah, the body doesn’t know the difference, but evidently it does. Just like the hydrogenated oils and finally working to purge them out of the food chain, people don’t have high cholesterol levels, they have hydrogenated oils attaching the cholesterol levels to the arteries and preventing the body from being able to digest them out of the body.

Posted on January 10, 2012 at 9:38pmIf there is going to a “food police” it should be the health care providers, they are the ones taking the risk. Give me a good discount for eating right, it will probably motivate me. If I don’t like the rate structure, I’ll change companies. That’s the way the free market works!
Oh, I forgot, government is taking over health care so they are the providers, and if I don’t like their rates… ooops! Welcome to serfdom.

Posted on January 10, 2012 at 7:08pmLower your carbs, eat good proteins (meat, fish, poultry, dairy and eggs), carb containing fresh leafy and other “garden veggies” (NOT “sugar” veggies such as sweet peas, sweet corn, sweet beets, etc.), moderate fruits (berries, small portions of apples, grapes, etc.), and good fats (animal source, which contain ESSENTIAL fatty acids), and you will NOT GET DIABETES and can “normalize” your sugars if you have diabetes. In addition, your cholesterol numbers will improve, your blood pressure will be better maintained and you can loose/control your weight ALL WITHOUT STARVING!

Posted on January 10, 2012 at 7:06pmreally ??? this is not rocket science! is it?? when i was a kid eating Mcdonnalds was a treat that came maybe 1 time a month, or once every 2 months, eating take out was a treat, and still is for me, and 1 hamburger, and 1 small fry, and small drink was it, now its 1 huge double hamburger, and 1 drink regular size, no fries, because everything kind of food is on steroids these days, the burgers, the fries and drinks, the servings are so huge, this is common sence, you know what you can eat.

I nearly laughed out loud at this. I’m living proof that claim is a load of bull… Since my teens I‘ve drank a couple sodas a day and I’ve never experienced any weight gain, nor been found at risk for diabetes. I understand some people really need to lose weight (actual obese people, not pudgy people who are ranked overweight by the flawed BMI scale and are consequently shamed into believing they’re porkers), but demonizing/taxing certain food items isn’t the answer.

Posted on January 10, 2012 at 6:19pmPeople that already have diabetes do not need to be ingesting large quantities of sugar-laden drinks. My wife had a friend that was diabetic and refused to follow a diet that would help her condition. She frequently drank regular soda and wound up with both legs amputated. She was dead at age 48. This ad goes too far. People just need to be accountable for their actions.
