New York Times Columnist Apologizes to Tea Party Republicans

New York Times Columnist Apologizes to Tea Party Republicans

During the last few months of heated political debate ugly and at times slanderous statements have been routinely directed towards those associated with the Tea Party. One New York Times columnist is recanting his words:

“That anger reached its apex on Tuesday, when I wrote a column comparing the Tea Party Republicans to terrorists. The words I chose were intemperate and offensive to many, and I’ve been roundly criticized. I was a hypocrite, the critics said, for using such language when on other occasions I’ve called for a more civil politics. In the cool light of day, I agree with them. I apologize.”

The apology came after a rambling few paragraphs of the columnist, Joe Nocera, explaining his liberal roots in Providence, RI, and how his views have evolved to the point where he now sees himself as a pragmatist who favors common-sense solutions over ideology. The Tuesday column for which Nocera was originally criticized was entitled “Tea Party’s War on America,” and included such common-sense one-liners as:

“These last few months, much of the country has watched in horror as the Tea Party Republicans have waged jihad on the American people.”

“Inflicting more pain on their countrymen doesn’t much bother the Tea Party Republicans, as they’ve repeatedly proved.”

“For now, the Tea Party Republicans can put aside their suicide vests. But rest assured: They’ll have them on again soon enough.”

Newsbusters Scott Whitlock has pointed out that Nocera‘s comments just fit the norm in relation to the paper’s habit of comparing congressional GOP members to murderers.

“On July 25, columnist Nicholas Kristof used similar language. Also speaking of the Tea Party, he declared, ‘Well, wake up to the national security threat. Only it’s not coming from abroad, but from our own domestic extremists.’

Kristof insisted that the biggest threat to America ‘comes from budget machinations, and budget maniacs, at home.’

On July 4th, 2011, another columnist, David Brooks, proclaimed the Tea Party has ‘no sense of moral decency.’

Finally, on June 26, columnist Thomas Friedman referred to the group of conservatives as the ‘Hezbollah faction’ of the GOP.”

I guess the other columnists may be waiting to issue an apology from the entire paper.

While Nocera’s regrets may satisfy some, it’s likely that many still feel he is just one of many who owe an apology. Earlier in the week National Review’s Jonah Goldberg perhaps summed up the frustration of many Americans who feel that conservative Republicans and individuals who affiliate with the Tea Party have been demonized by many commentators, and that the media has unfairly covered vindictive statements made by liberal politicians:

“All over the place, conservative Republicans are ‘hostage takers’ ‘terrorists’ and ‘traitors.‘ They want to ’end life as we know it on this planet,’ says Nancy Pelosi. They are betraying the Founders, too. Chris Matthews all but signs up for the ‘Make an Ass of Yourself’ contest at the State Fair. Joe Nocera writes today that ‘the Tea Party Republicans can put aside their suicide vests.’ Lord knows what Krugman and Olbermann have said.

Then last night, on the very day Gabby Giffords heroically returns to cast her first vote since that tragic attack seven months ago, the vice president of the United States calls the Republican party a bunch of terrorists.

No one cares. I hate the ‘if this were Bush’ game so we’re in luck. Instead imagine if this was Dick Cheney calling the Progressive Caucus (or whatever they’re called) a ‘bunch of terrorists’ on the day Giffords returned to the Congress. Would the mainstream media notice or care? Would Meet the Press debate whether this raises ‘troubling questions’ about the White House’s sensitivity? Would Andrea Mitchell find some way to blame Sarah Palin for Dick Cheney’s viciousness? Would Keith Olbermann explode like a mouse subjected to the Ramone’s music in Rock and Roll High School? Something inside me hidden away shouts, ‘Hell yes they would!’”

If you identify yourself with the Tea Party do you accept Nocera’s apology? Do you agree with Goldberg that many commentators and politicians have made outlandish comments that would have been covered very differently if made by conservatives directed towards liberals?

He sounds sincere. If he seriously puts ideology aside, I imagine he’ll see the Tea Party was right. Politicians need to end the waste and reduce regulations killing business. The tax code is so complicated we spend (I think they said) 76 billion JUST TO PAY FOR THE THE TAXES every year. That’s just stupid.
Art Laffer said that we shouldn’t be borrowing money except for emergencies and if it enhances the economy. We don’t need to waste money on “bridges to nowhere,” studying the sex lives of Chinese prostitutes, campaigns, and so on and so on….
Honesty and the desire to serve America must win. If lies, corrupt motives, raising wealth off the taxpayers’ backs, and politicians’ megalomania is their motives, the result can only be another evil empire. Character matters! The parties don’t.

      Were you ever at a “Pep Rally” when you really didn’t care if this game was won or not, (maybe Veeball or some such thing.) You get around enough people yelling and cheering and chanting, and first thing you’re all worked up, and excited enough that if you talk to someone from the opposing team, (or about them) you say all kinds of things which you never would have said before the pep rally. THIS IS THE KIND OF THING LYNCH MOBS ARE MADE OF, AND WHAT THE LIBS & PROGS ARE TRYING TO DO AGAINST THE TEA PARTY! {Guess what, it’s working}
Maybe after a little sleep, some of the hysteria is wearing off, and Nocera’s conscience is getting to him for being part of a “Lynch Mob” !
I say let’s pray for Joe Nocera that our God will reach his heart, and cleanse him from all this hatred. I also quote John The Baptist, “Bring ye therefore fruits meet for repentance.!

Name one person in the Tea Party that has incited a violent act?

@Mastrssg: All good points and I’d like a few answers too. It doesn’t help us holding a grudge if there is true sincerity and not just PC to placate us. The T Party consists of many political points of view, and they cannot pin us down, but none of this group has created violence like we’ve seen most recently from liberal leaning Unions and those who consistently compare themselves to democrats. They have shown themselves as very angry, violent types (Wisconsin),so let’s show we are the civil party, and God willing, they will notice the difference by how we act and react, unlike themselves.

We must take the moral high ground on this if we are to be seen as reasonable people with common sense solutions. We should all send this gentlemen a “thank you” and accept his apology. We can let him know we disagree with him in many/most areas, but we certainly admire anyone who can recognize wrong behavior and apologize for it. Now, this does not mean we will necessary give blind trust to this person, yet it would go a long way in showing the world that we truly are reasonable people. Granted, the mainstream media won’t ever let anyone know if he receives a bunch of “thank yous” from tea party people, but he will know, and he surely will tell some people who will tell some people, and he may well even write about it in a good fashion.

Divisiveness should be the absolute last effort at fighting this fight. Reasonable people try every possible way to discuss/debate issues and instances in a reasonable fashion. Civility does not mean trust … but it does mean honorable. Let‘s give this a try and thank this person and see if that does not begin having at least some on the left understand we are not ’crazy‘ peoples with ’crazy’ idealogies.

They are nothing more than idiots trying to pass themselves as respectable news persons or politicians. Especially the idiot that is in the second highest chair. Anyone that would call an AMERICAN a terrorist is an idiot and they need to be removed from office immediately.

I am a conservative and unfortunately the mainstream media is full of progressives calling conservatives names and telling the rest of the world how evil we are. Grandma killers, hate polar bears, don’t like women and children, want to destroy the environment, all rich racists, blah blah blah. The proof of his sincerity will be the length of time before criticism/comments start again. If conservatives directed these kinds comments towards progressives you can bet the main stream media would be up in arms, demanding all kinds of apologies. I just consider the source.

I too, consider the source. I also refuse to help pay them. If all conservatives refused to give their nickels to these obviously lefty organizations, they would have to change their by-product to something more useful than wrapping dead fish! I, do not patronize their business if they do not please me (as I would any other business). And I’m not just talking about reporting my point of view, just report the truth. This particular rag does not.

Have always hoped conservatives do not support these liberal types in any way. I quit buying newspapers, magazines, going to movies (made mostly by die-hard liberals) and can’t watch most of the liberal trash on TV. Oprah is a user and Obama lover, all the MSM are out.

Seems tough, but I’m tired of hearing what these people stand for: ” FEAR of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, BUT,(liberal) fools despise Wisdom and Instruction” If the shoe fits……….

I don’t know who to be more upset with..

The progressives that use proproganda to build false prespective of and try to define who common sense conservatives ( i would include most Tea Party members in this group) are, to the uninformed and/or progressive follower sheep .
    OR
The dumb republicans that give the left enough evidense for the left progressives to use to point to and say “see, see look look see how the conservatives are out to distroy America/ as most people have only known America .. ( i. e. the last 50 years give or take )

If you ask me we just have to be true to the founders belief Americans and fundimental truth will win out in the end… ( hopefully in my life time)

And what was said in the British House of Commons during deliberations about what to do about their troops being surrounded in Bunker Hill in 1775? Edmund Burke said in paraphrase, “…what is this continued condemnation of attributing Americans call to independency?…is by continually trumpeting that condemnation that you will actually drive them TO declare independance?” So, liberals, levelers, and those who would control our behavior with fiats and taxes…beware what you say to us. By your continual false witnessing you might drive us to actually engage in all the heinous things you attribute to us. I am on the moral side. You do not have the right to redistribute. Your kind is in the wrong and there is only one way this is going to resolve itself….ya’ll keep driving us to that point…we are in the car and are not afraid of where you are driving us…keep driving, fools.

I really don’t care whether he apologized or not. You can’t unring a bell, and the liberal talking points referring to Tea Party as terrorists have already metastatized from the NYT to the rest of the MSM. These people will never like us, and we need to stop expecting that they will show us any respect or courtesy. Tea Party needs to quit wasting time complaining about this kind of stuff, and focus on the real issues that are plaguing our country

I hardly call that an apology. The tea party can put aside their suicide vests for now. But rest assured we will have them on again soon enough. That is not an apology. No tea partier in their right mind will accept that as an apology. Of course the msm would have covered it differently if roles were reversed.

I wasn’t looking for an apology. Some of us don’t want their “apologies”. We want them to wake up and realize where we are headed and quit playing partisan cheerleader for the progressives and this destructive president. If Nocera is waking up—that is good enough for me. An apology doesn’t encompass an understanding of the issues which is a REQUIREMENT in order for us to repair this country. We want the demonization of ordinary Americans to stop–because we all know when they call the candidates the terrorists, they mean US. I am through with thugs and American haters fighting to take property of others out of selfishness and greed after they spend day after day saying GREED is what got us here. The rhetoric isn’t working, you are thugs who believe you have some human right to the property and wealth of others. That is evil. Continue down this road and you’ll see all too soon where the roadblocks are, and they are NOT in your favor.
