Newark Mayor Cory Booker Describes Rescuing Neighbors From Fire: ‘Angels’

NEWARK, N.J. (The Blaze/AP) — The mayor of New Jersey’s largest city expects to have more to say Friday about how he helped rescue neighbors from a fire.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker was treated and released from a hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation and second-degree burns.

Booker had a bandage around the thumb and first finger of his right hand. He hugged the sister of the woman who he saved and told News 12 New Jersey early Friday that he thanked God everyone was OK.

During an interview with WNYW-TV, he said “angels got me to her” while describing the rescue:

Booker arrived home Thursday night to find the house next door on fire. The mayor and two of his security detail entered the home to help residents escape, his spokeswoman Anne Torres said.

The woman Booker helped save was in stable condition at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston with burns to her back and neck.

Speaking on “CBS This Morning” Friday, Newark Mayor Cory Booker described how he ran through flames to help get the woman out.

Booker says he grabbed her out of her bed and threw her over his shoulder and ran, but then feared they wouldn’t get out of the kitchen. Booker says he “punched through the flames.”

Booker says it was “a very scary thing” to look back and see nothing but flames and look ahead and see blackness.

Booker, a prolific social media user, tweeted late Thursday that he was fine and thanked his followers for their well-wishes.

“Thanks 2 all who are concerned. Just suffering smoke inhalation,” Booker tweeted. “We got the woman out of the house. We are both off to hospital. I will b ok.”

He then posted a tweet early Friday morning that read: “Thanks everyone, my injuries were relatively minor. Thanks to Det. Alex Rodriguez who helped get all of the people out of the house.”

Newark Fire Director Fateen Ziyad told The Star-Ledger of Newark that Booker had recounted to him how he heard a woman yelling “I’m back here,” from a back bedroom when the mayor rushed into the building but was held back by his security detail. The mayor yelled at his security guards to release him, saying: “She is going to die, she is going to die,” Ziyad told the newspaper, adding the mayor crossed through smoke and flames to grab the woman and carry her in his arms out of the building.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Booker is known for coming to the aid of his constituents, even helping them shovel snow during a blizzard that crippled the city and Northeast in 2010.

The mayor has scheduled a news conference at his home at 10 a.m. Friday.

I‘m very impressed by this man’s character. I hope his constituents take note of his good character and follow his lead. He’s a fine role model for everyone. My job occasionally takes me to Newark, and I would be honored to meet him and shake his hand.

I‘m a conservative who literally had the priviledge to BOO Newark’s last mayor Crook Sharpe James on a debate stage many years ago; but this guy is amazing last blizzard residents could tweet him & he’d shovel out seniors, deliver diapers to snowed in moms; an illegal monster that killed Newark college kids turned himself into the Mayor, he brought down crime & now this. No doubt he’ll someday be VP or maybe even Prez.

I see nothing but good comments, I wonder why. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, it’s because none of the fake conservatives have posted yet.

Great job Mr Booker. I met him in 2009, at an Opera at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center with my conductor friend Jacques Lacombe. He was extremely regal and gentleman like. Very gentle and soft spoken. I could tell he was a Christian right away. And he smelled divine. :-)

    OUTstanding role model, Mr Mayor!

I thank the Lord that you survived to tell that tale as did the folks you and your detail helped rescue. You have displayed what all Americans should aspire toward – bravery in the face of death.

Sounds like a neighbor I would like to have. Great Job Sir and thank you for being a real leader in your community. A lot of so called leaders whether D, R, or otherwise could learn a lot from how this man lives his life and treats those around him.

I have seen good things about Mayor Booker for years now. I think this is ‘par for he course’, as far as he is concerned. I mean that as a compliment, by the way. I am glad to read that he is still in Newark, NJ and is still serving in a good and Godly manner. May God Bless him for his self-giving heart.

He is one of the good guys!!! Very brave!! I just googled him and read all about him and he is really something!! He moved into crime ridden places to make a real difference- and he did!! He has done many, many things making Newark better. In addition to all of that he is single and a Christian and in my age range!!! :) I think, if given the opportunity, I could bring him fully over to “my side” aka Conservative. Kind of a la JC Watts. It seems from what I’ve read he is already fairly conservative (small c.) Of course, more importantly, I would have to make sure that he is a authentic Christian.
    Cory- call me!!!!

Why can’t everyone have this mentality? He saw a person in need and helped out. He is just as much a hero as any fireman/police officer/ and maybe even military serviceman. Sure he wasn’t dodging bullets to get this lady to safety but running into a burning building while knowing it could collapse on you takes definite courage. Praise to you Mr. Booker. You have changed the lives of many people by getting that woman out.

He’s actually known for helping his constituents. A citizen asked him for help for her grandfather shoveling his walk because she was unable to do so due to work so he asked for the man’s address and did it himself.

He was offered a position in the Obama admin but turned it down because he already made a commitment to Newark. The first thing he did upon being elected was take a pay cut. Has received transparency awards multiple years for his budget process. Crime is down by record numbers since him taking office and Newark had its first homicide free month in decades. This has been attributed to his work-release programs which help minor felons find jobs. You give a man a paycheck then he has no reason to steal. He’s also doubled the amount of affordable housing under development. All of this while slashing the city’s budget deficit from 180 million to 73 million. My dream would be for him to run for president, but as with most good civil servants they won’t take higher positions.
