Newly Uncovered Footage Shows British Legion Secretly Meeting Hitler

Interesting new footage has been discovered showing a secret meeting between delegates of the Royal British Legion and Adolf Hitler in the time leading up to the Second World War.
Also in attendance to meet Legion Chairman Major Francis Fetherston-Goldley during the July 1935 meeting was the Fuhrer’s Deputy Rudolf Hess, Hermann Goering, the head of the German Luftwaffe, and Heinrich Himmler, the head of the German Special Police.
According to the Telegraph, the footage was unearthed with a book of photographs from the charity’s archive.
[T]he meetings are believed to have been orchestrated by the Nazi-propaganda machine. Photographs show that on at least one occasion the British visitors were surrounded by Nazi film cameras during those meetings.
According to research by a documentary crew, the men were invited by German ex-service organisations but, in a Nazi propaganda coup, ended up meeting Germany’s political leaders, turning the trip into an embarrassing series of public events that seemed to suggest a union between Britain and Germany.
“The purpose of the visit was very honourable,” said Liam Maguire, spokesperson for the British Legion. “It was done with the best intentions. They were really there on a fact-finding mission to see how German ex-service organisations treated their ex-servicemen and their visit was very much hijacked – the Legion was exploited by an evil group of people for their own purposes.”
Update: Ok all you smarty-smart smarty-pants out there in comment land… it’s come to my attention that there may have been confusion with my previous title which called this “WWI Footage.” Many were quick to point out that this footage is from 1935 and not from World War I. This is true, however the British delegation led by Fetherson-Godly was a delegation of World War I Legion soldiers who traveled to Berlin for the meeting. So as not to confuse anyone else, I’ve edited the title. Thanks for keeping us on our toes!

I’m a big history buff when it comes to both World Wars, and my brain took an instant double take the moment I glanced at the way the thread was originally worded. Even though I’m quite familiar with the dates, facts and figures of World Wars 1 and 2 the first thing that jumped into my head was , “Wow! Original World War One footage of Hitler discovered !?!…” Now I understand what was intended but it‘s better now that it’s updated. That’s just my two cents.

A week later Nazi Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Three weeks later, from the east, the USSR as an ally of Nazi Germany, also invaded Poland. Two years later in June 1941 Nazi Germany stabbed their Soviet Allies in the back and invaded the USSR and instantly the USSR became buddies with Britain and a few months later the USA. Why wasn’t Stalin tried as a war criminal becuse he was once an ally of Nazi Germany and for almost two years the USSR supplied the oil that fueled the Luftwaffe planes that bombed Britain during the Blitz of 1940/41? Why didn’t Britain and France also declare war on the USSR in September 1939 when the USSR as an ally of Nazi Germany invade Poland? When you think about all these historical facts that are seldom mentioned in the history books today who cares today if former British soldiers visited with former members of the German Army in 1935?

I guess if you are a scholar of arcane nazi factoids this might make for some amusing bar conversation but is it really notable news in the 21st century? The documentary researchers are quoted as stating the Legion did not intend to meet with Hitler. I‘m hard pressed to believe many Americans are familiar with the Royal British Legion and the article’s author makes no attempt enlighten the reader about the organization. So if the intention was to make me look up the RBL the mission accomplished. Otherwise, what’s the point?

The headline was a good one and, as a matter of fact, part of the reason I looked at the story in the first place was because the headline made me think “WWI? That ain’t right.” I’m not refusing to admit I’m wrong because of pride, I’m refusing to admit I’m wrong because the headline was a clever way to grab someone’s attention – again, that’s what headlines are supposed to do. If you see a headline that reads “Man Bites Dog” and then find out that the article is about a hot dog eating contest, it’s a good headline, because the writer has gotten your attention by being clever. You are right though, I was being a smart aleck, so for that I apologize.

Actually, I think the Blaze’s headline is pretty good, because it grabs your attention (exactly what a headline is supposed to do) and, if you have the ability to reason, you quickly ascertain that while technically it’s not footage from WWI, it is footage having to do with WWI. Gnome, the problem with you Liberals is that you lack the fundamental ability to reason. I suspect that comes from the years of indoctrination you endured in our public schools where you were force-fed “facts” and told not to think for yourself.

The video would properly be titled by the event during which it was filmed, not by the subject which might have been addressed at that event. Thus it would have been a WWI veteren meeting video. If I make a video during my birthday celebration it would be called a BIRTHDAY video, not a BIRTH video, even though my birth is the thing being discussed/celebrated/remembered.
