Newsweek magazine, no stranger to controversial covers, has unveiled the front of their next issue: It’s President Barack Obama with a rainbow-striped halo and the headline, “The First Gay President.”

The accompanying article will be written by Andrew Sullivan, who is openly gay. Newsweek forwarded a preview of Sullivan’s piece to Politico:

It’s easy to write off President Obama’s announcement of his support for gay marriage as a political ploy during an election year. But don’t believe the cynics. Andrew Sullivan argues that this announcement has been in the making for years. “When you step back a little and assess the record of Obama on gay rights, you see, in fact, that this was not an aberration. It was an inevitable culmination of three years of work.” And President Obama has much in common with the gay community. “He had to discover his black identity and then reconcile it with his white family, just as gays discover their homosexual identity and then have to reconcile it with their heterosexual family,” Sullivan writes.

The full piece is not yet available, but Sullivan weighed in on Obama’s announcement in a blog post last week:

I think of all the gay kids out there who now know they have their president on their side. I think of Maurice Sendak, who just died, whose decades-long relationship was never given the respect it deserved. I think of the centuries and decades in which gay people found it impossible to believe that marriage and inclusion in their own families was possible for them, so crushed were they by the weight of social and religious pressure. I think of all those in the plague years shut out of hospital rooms, thrown out of apartments, written out of wills, treated like human garbage because they loved another human being. I think of Frank Kameny. I think of the gay parents who now feel their president is behind their sacrifices and their love for their children.

The interview changes no laws; it has no tangible effect. But it reaffirms for me the integrity of this man we are immensely lucky to have in the White House. Obama’s journey on this has been like that of many other Americans, when faced with the actual reality of gay lives and gay relationships. Yes, there was politics in a lot of it. But not all of it. I was in the room long before the 2008 primaries when Obama spoke to the mother of a gay son about marriage equality. He said he was for equality, but not marriage. Five years later, he sees – as we all see – that you cannot have one without the other. But even then, you knew he saw that woman’s son as his equal as a citizen. It was a moment – way off the record at the time – that clinched my support for him.

      Finally, some honesty from Newsweek. Obama is our first gay president, and this has been in the works for years.

      I firmly believe that Obama’s announcement and this article are clearing the way for his divorce and his declaration that he is actually gay. Half the world thinks Michelle is his beard, and I’ve been predicting they will divorce within 5 years after he leaves the White House (if he ever leaves the White House). It makes perfect sense.

      If you attend movies, buy videos, magazines or any other thing produced in Hollywood or the entertainment industry, you should give some very serious thought to the fact that the people in Hollywood and the rest of the entertainment industry support with millions and millions of dollars, the cause of the communist socialist politicians and their movement to destroy our nation.

      By the way, those who incessantly harp that Christians have no right to judge are wrong. “Judge not, that ye be not judged” does NOT give a blanket prohibition against judging (if it did, then Christians would have to accept false teachings and sin, both of which are an abomination to our God). There are four kinds of judging that are lawful by the Word – two public and two private. The two public faults are ecclesiastical (a minister preaching God’s word judges men by admonishing their sins) and civil government (magistrates judging violations of civil law in court rooms). The two private types are when one man in a Christian manner reprehends another for his sins in private and the other is where gross faults by notorious offenders are condemned and others informed thereof that they may be warned.
      That which IS forbidden judgement falls into one of seven categories – officiously, presumptuously, hypocritically, hastily, unwarrantably, unjustly, or unmercifully. (Any Christian truly interested in the depth of what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount should read Arthur Pink‘s enlightening study in the scriptures regarding the Lord’s Sermon!) Any self-righteous non-believer or atheist that instantly howls when something or someone they love is criticized and presume that Jesus Christ would disapprove will just have to take my word for it that God does NOT prohibit lawful judging.

I am aware of God every second of every day. God speaks to everybody, ALWAYS! You just have to listen for Him. He doesn’t always (or even mostly) tell you what you want to hear. He’s God.       Here’s the meaning of the halo: They filled in the space between his horns to make a circle of it to create the “halo” and added the rainbow colors for the “gay” part. And when Jesus was talking about judging was like this you cannot judge if you are guilty of the same thing you know like a hypocrite and since the old testement is still part of the bible and the 10 commandments are the foundation of GODS law they are still revelant for today . Take corithians chapter 6 verses 9 and 10. Show me Christ said that it was okay to practice homosexuality. He destroyed all but 8 with a flood then sodom and gommorah for their sexual immorality. GOD is the same yesterday today and tomorrow. He judges all by the same rule book.

Did your God ever say for his followers to force his standards on other people? Wouldn’t that go against free will? Wouldn’t denying same sex marriage be taking away that will? Don’t people have the choice to sin if they so desire? Also, if you view telling the truth as antagonism that’s your problem.

      You are the hypocrite to come at me with claims that apply to nearly every Christian that posts here. I never see you denounce anything they say, or say anything that is pro or even partial to atheists.

      I have denounced many Atheistic posts and stories of Atheists vandalizing religious buildings. I have also said pro Tebow comments and said certain mockeries of Christianity(the SNL skit) as unfunny.

      Please stop making false claims as you so constantly do. Also, you would do much better to stop concerning yourself with what I do, and with what your fellow Blaze posters do. THEY are the ones who are representing you and the fact that I’ve never seen you disagree with anything the majority says on here….says a lot about the type of person you are.

      I also see you never answered my questions in the other thread because you viewed one as silly. Again, i’m sorry you are okay with the mutilation of the male genitals.

      The halo represents Obama‘s assertion that it was Christ’s crucifiction that lead him to believe in the righteousness of gay marriage. Using Christ to justify sin is demonic. It’s exactly how the devil works. It would have been better for him to renounce his supposed Christian faith than to justify this abomination using Christ’s sacrifice.       Who is this majority here you speak of? There is such a wide range of opinions on this site, that there is only a select few posters that I tend to agree with on a regular basis. You are not one of them.
      I have no qualms with the type of person that I am MOD.
      Why you think I should disagree with what I agree with makes no sense MOD. But then again, little you say ever does.
      I disagree with the left.

      You essentially agreed that you look at everything “all or nothing” when MOST things in life aren’t like that.

      You must follow this place pretty closely. I know there are other atheists on here but I don’t know their names and I have yet to see anybody but you and other Christians mention me in any posts as giving Atheists “a bad name”. Please give examples(of atheists) because I would be interested in seeing what they said. This whole place is ripe with people who give Christianity a bad name yet I don’t see you denounce anything they say(it’s not about who you agree with, it’s about who you denounce out of your own group of people). Around my friends I never hear as much racism and bigotry that I do on here and yet nothing, from you about saying how the people making those remarks are dumb or not representative of what the Blaze is about(I may have missed those examples).

      I am respectful in the stories on here about Christians who have died(the family that died in the tornado while on knees praying to God that the storm wouldn’t hit them).

      I could have easily have taken cheap shots at that family(as others did) but I was COMPLETELY respectful and said that it was a tragedy and that my thoughts were with the surviving family members. Again, you will probably say, “THAT DOES’NT COUNT!” or some other reason why my acts of kindness are really evil but again, that is your problem not mine.

      You can’t make broad claims without any evidence and then demand respect for those claims. I know that it is something that religion does all of the time, but it is not something that is respected or accepted in the rational world.

      Also, that is usually not the only thing that a lot of people who are Christians believe.

      For instance, you have Santorum who said, “Even fathers in jail who had abandoned their kids were still better than no father at all to have in their children’s lives.””

      Again, I don’t see him quoting any sources or studies and his statement defies logic and common sense. Then again, Santorum was known for making crazy statements with no facts. Must be the “well I read it somewhere so it has to be true” logic? He is also essentially saying that a father that is in jail is better then a kid who has two loving gay parents that are involved in his/her life. It is comments like these that show any rational person that people like Santorum don‘t have the child’s best interest at heart. They are just peddling their religious belief and wanting to force other people to conform their life around them.

      Yeah, I do know what would happen in those intolerant countries. Been to a couple while in the service, and mostly have dealt with refugees from those countries. Worked at the Mariel Boat Lift as well as spent almost nine year in Europe and much of that near the former W. German, E. German borders, and along the Czech border.     Some conservatives I’ve been reading on Twitter think this cover might be a unintended gift to the Romney campaign. They point out that most of Newsweek’s remaining print subscribers tend to be older, thus less likely to embrace gay marriage. The cover would be a turn-off. I hope they are right.
