Newt Gingrich Can’t Afford to Get on Utah Ballot

Newt Gingrich has already made it explicitly clear that he believes dropping out in the face of overwhelming odds is for lesser beings. Unfortunately for Newt, his lack of money may finally be becoming a problem.

Case in point: Right now, more than anything, Gingrich would need to win a primary to look like a realistic alternative to Romney. But he can‘t do that if he can’t afford to get on the ballots of major primary states, and based on the fact that his check bounced when he tried to get on Utah’s ballot, that might not be such a realistic thought. USA Today has more:

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Gingrich’s $500 check to pay the filing fee has bounced. If the former House speaker doesn’t pay up by April 20, the story says, his name won’t appear on the ballot.

The Utah primary — the last of the presidential nominating season — is June 26.[...]

Gingrich acknowledged Sunday that he recently contributed some of his own money to help his campaign, which is about $4.5 million in debt.

A $500 check isn’t exactly a large expense for a national Presidential campaign, and either way, a check that small bouncing suggests that Newt’s campaign is either suffering from gross financial incompetence or just financial insolvency.

Of course, given the high concentration of Mormons in Utah, it could be argued that Gingrich might want to spend his $500 (assuming he has it) someplace else.

Both Santorum and Gingrich’s campaigns are in DEBT, and they thought they were going to help solve America’s debt?!?
Now Santorum is probably going to sell out, and get a bailout from Romney’s campaign for turning over his support. That doesn’t sound like conviction or fiscal responsibility to me.
Meanwhile, Ron Paul the only candidate who is NOT supported by bankers or special interests, is NOT in debt, drew over 3000 people to his speech at Texas A&M.
That’s right. Sold out, spill over crowd, with 500 to 1000 more people sitting outside the auditorium watching on TV monitors.
No Republican candidate has drawn these type of crowds. No republican candidate has the broad spectrum of support from independents, recovering democrats, and TRUE conservatives.

Superstar Ken Doll will LOSE. Not just because Ron Paul supporters will stay home, but because he is no different than Barry, and will not garner the support and enthusiasm from the Republican base.

If the delegates do not come to their senses in Tampa, then you can look forward to another 4 years of an illegal occupant in the WH.

Don’t worry. I have visited Utah as well as have lived there in the past. My business associates did not have any problem in finding whatever they wanted. Booze, smokes and nudie bars were all found by them. I cannot attest to the “quality” of the opportunities as I did not participate in the evening’s festivities. They did report that it was easy to find the underbelly of society even in Utah.

Newt & Santorum never had it but so jealous of Mitt because of it. It takes money to run a campaign & now Mitt will be outspent by Obama but he won’t continually whine about it because he is a classy guy. Newt is all over the place & would love to have Santorum supporters to send him money to get out of the hole. He is going nowhere. I agree, Gingrich would crush Obama in a debate. Conservatives, for the most part, would NOT stay home, and would vote for him come election time. HOWEVER, in a general election, there aren’t enough conservatives to win an election. We need independents, republicans, democrats, and other voters on OUR side. Gingrich would not steal enough votes from Obama, nor would he convince enough democrats to vote for him; many of them hate his guts. I hope that enough democrats are not willing to vote for Obama again, and will vote for the Republican instead. But that’s not a strategy, that’s taking a chance.

That’s wrong, although I appreciate your attempt to understand Gingrich’s motivations. I’ve gone through the same exercise myself.

IMO, Gingrich was never running for President in a serious way, and I think he was probably surprised when he actually won a primary. Here’s my idea. He for one thing is trying to become richer, so running for President was a way to sell his books. I think he also enjoys jetting here and there and living high on donations to his campaign. I think he likes being in the national spotlight and sounding smart (the guy actually is pretty smart). The thought of actually getting the nomination probably never crossed his mind, and was never his motivation.

My prediction: he’ll stay in the race only to spite Romney and all those people who are telling him to leave. Unless, that is, he sees some financial benefit from leaving the race.
