Newt: Romney Would Buy the Election if He Could

Even though he finished a distant forth in the latest Des Moines Register poll released Saturday, the same poll he topped only one month ago, Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich still believes the race in Iowa is far from over despite the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses set to kick-off in only two days.

While fileding questions from reporters after Sunday mass, the former Speaker of the House took a jab at poll leader Mitt Romney. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports on Gingrich’s sharp words about the Romney campaign:

“’You figure out between 2007 and 2008 and 2011 and 2012 how many dollars per vote Romney has spent and it will rival [New York City Mayor Michael] Bloomberg,’ Gingrich told reporters after attending a service at Saint Ambrose Cathedral. Bloomberg, Gingrich added, ‘did buy an election. Romney would buy the election if he could.’”

While Romney has had a good deal more money to spend than Gingrich, POLITICO’s Alexander Burns notes that Romney has actually not spent as much this cycle when compared to his 2008 campaign, and there is no indication that he self-funded in the first three quarters of the year.

In the final poll before the Iowa caucuses released Saturday night by the Register, Romney came in first with 24 percent support with Gingrich finishing fourth with 12 percent. The former Speaker of House seemed unfazed by the poll which accurately predicted the state’s 2008 caucus winners.

“The most accurate part of the poll is that 41 percent could change their opinion, and I think that is an understatement,” Gingrich said Sunday. “This is wide open. I think the next 2 ½ days are going to be fascinating.”

I think you missed his point or have you not noticed the super packs from Mitt Romney and Ron Paul are the ones spending all this money to disgraced the man. So we have 2 on the ballot as of now Mitt Romney and Ron Paul one is the establishment and the other won’t garner 10% of the vote. So the question is if Newt Gingrich is the person that the powers that be want in office and is polling better than Mitt Romney why would they want to keep him off the ballot? The Supreme Court did us no justice when they allowed the super packs the strength that they received. and most say that he should uphold the 11th commandment of Reagan question is why should the man be able to defend himself. Personally I seen the same thing happen first to Sarah Palin and then Herman Cain and now it is the full out assault on Newt Gingrich, through my eyes it seems the establishment have become very on uneasy on knowing that Newt Gingrich could possibly be the nominee. Bid he or does he still have some harebrained ideas that have come back to haunt him absolutely do I agree with everything or his positions no but I do know the people in the Senate and House of Representatives are running scared of a possible Gingrich presidency! For he does know that the people in this country are angry just like they were in 1994 and he didn’t get any help from the Republicans to push measures forward think about that, for they have not changed but have expanded further.

Cosmo for your information Mitt Romney estimated worth between 260 and $280 million dollars. He’s like Obama is he afraid to release his tax burden or his charitable contributions? We seen how much Joe Biden has donated to charity what is Mitt Romney trying to hide personally I could care less if he was worth 1 billion. everybody likes the uses Morman religion and can’t get above 25% of the Republican vote, makes you think that it is not the religion holding him back it is his many stances that he has changed over the course of years. Having lived in Michigan when his father was governor his dad did a pretty good job for the people of Michigan but then again that was in a completely different era that this country faces now.

This just goes to show that if you‘re a slimy politician you can’t run a clean campaign because eventually your opponents will start telling the truth about you and you’ll have to fight back. For the most part his primary focus was on Barack Obama and not his fellow candidates why is it okay for some candidates or their associates to go after somebody but it‘s not okay to defend yourself that’s real liberty. For me there is not one of them on the stage that adhere to all of what I believe it, as some say that is that the process of how we nominate our representative or is it. The main focus should have been all along how bad the present person holding office is doing and and how they will differ from him to change this country’s course. We have given the press more than enough to go after our elected candidate and not enough on our president policies as of now.

I wonder how the question was worded in order for him to answer in such a way. Even though I do agree with Newt, he seemed to be explaining how things are going against him vice trying to do an acusatory statement.

At this point in time, given the amount of money that can both be raised and spent by candidates, there should now be a top dollar limit a candidate can spend in a local area, state, and overall, including PAC money, just to keep the most money candidate from being able to capitalize and flood a market with ads. It was never foreseen a candidate would in this day and age be able to make this kind of money to campaign with, so it does need to be limited.

I would feel that way too if I were a Bleeding Heart Liberal Democrat who was screaming for fairness. But I am not. I feel we need someone who actually understands the economy, not in terms of how “unfair” it is to be poor in this country, but someone who understands how to make things grow and produce and succeed. If by nature of his naturally acquired skills he also has a full wallet, and he is willing to spend it on his campaign, let him. Ads may be effective in convincing the light minded as to who should be president, but in this party at least, we should all be able to decided for ourselves based on what we have learned while seeking out information from multiple sources in this process.

I am fully as concerned about that as the Presidential election. If the bickerers don’t get over this pretty quickly, they are going to cause moderate and swing voters to either stay away from the polls, or worse, much worse, vote (shudder) Dem.
I am appalled when I hear Libertarians say that they simply won‘t vote if Paul isn’t the candidate. Listen up folks…, this election is NOT about ‘voting you conscience’, it is about who is going to be controlling the selection of judges, who is going to controlling spending, who is going to be issuing executive orders, who is going to be selecting the heads of DOJ, DOE, etc, etc.
Carter, Clinton, and Obama (and Dem Congresses) have already done nearly irreparable damage via bad policies, bad judges, bad fiscal decisions, etc., etc.

@RightThinking: I‘m appalled when establishment Republicans like Newt Gingrich say they won’t vote for Ron Paul if he is the nominee. It’s not just “Paulites” who say they won’t vote for the establishment. The establishment is saying it won’t support Paul.

Additionally, I’m a Ron Paul supporter, but I could stomach voting for Michele Bachmann, maybe even Rick Santorum, if they were the nominee. I think many Paul supporters would agree with me that at least those two seem to have some honesty and integrity and some small government credentials. Romney and Gingrich literally are Obama-light. If your choice for president is no better than the guy currently there, why should a freedom-minded conservative vote for Gingrich or Romney? So our team wins and we get a Democrat with an ‘R’ behind his name in the White House? No thanks, the whole tea party movement spawned from a disgust with both parties. We’re fed up with the pandering and the lip service. We want someone we can trust to cut the size of government and get it out of our lives. That’s why Ron Paul is clearly the best candidate.

I think they are going to collapse the system before the next election. Evil 10,000 times hilter is on the way. We have no trust in the system and the people we have in charge now are not the Americans that we think they are. Look at this selection of czars. None of the people are at all interested in advancing the progress in the true light for the United States.

When people think progressive they think progress. It is not the progress as we know it. It is evil progress. Unless you know who the enemy is the revelotion will be usless. It will take another 100 years for people to rise back up. Look at Iran. This was a measuring stick for the progressives and illuminati to see if the people could rise up against the regime, and they couldn’t.

Like syria, they will let the people get killed and see how it is accepted because they are going to do the same over here. There is no one left to come to our aid. Our society has guns and that is why they need to pit us against each other, so the ones that aren’t killed in the first round, can be rounded up.

The illuminati needs our country and canada to feed the slaves for the new world order.

Aptly chosen name. Do you have to renew your tin foil hat each new years? Or does the old one have staying power?

    Choose a side…

Founding Fathers and the Constitution OR
RINO Republicans and the same old crap like this…

That is the FACT about this election!

I think that Newt has such a high opinion of himself that he would balance the budget and take what he wanted himself in the process, not to mention selling us out and continuing the road to Euro-socialisim while he is at it. A slower train to the same station. Romney is nothing more than a puppet to the republican party and would continue the same route as well. The only choice in this race is Rep. Paul if not we will have to see what independents are running because I won’t vote for either one of these RINOS either.

      NICKDERINGER,
I think that you are wrong in your post.
Those that think like you have drunk from the Kool-Aid of the Republican Establishment.
Of course as I read the posts on this thread you are not alone in your imbibing of establishment Kool-Aid.

I would suggest to all who are buying the swill to get their learn on.

Churchill was reviled and despised by the Parliamentarian Establishment . They embraced Chamberlain.

      Churchill saved England!

      @Lucy Larue
Newt Gingrich is the most estblishment guy in the race. Worse yet, he’s willing to support Nancy Pelosi and the DEMOCRAT establishment.

Newt will not be the nominee.

      CITIZEN1,
Ron Paul does great damage. He is Ralph Nader on freaking STEROIDS!
If he ever attained his quest for the White House he would be as bad as President Dunham.
      WAKE UP!
