NFL Player Suffers Crushing Block During Tackle Attempt

The rule in the NFL is that if a ball carrier loses his helmet during a play, that play is blown dead. The rule is in place so something like this doesn’t happen:
The block occurred during Thursday’s 49ers vs. Chargers game. Via SportsGrid:
[Chargers player Mike] Tolbert, who lost his helmet while covering a punt return, sprinted 50 yards downfield in an attempt to tackle 49ers returner Ted Ginn, Jr. As Ginn switched direction, Tolbert pursued, and didn’t see Adams coming from his right side. That’s when the boom was dropped.
As you’ll notice, Tolbert was fine — luckily. What could have been a serious concussion or bloodied face ended in a “tough guy” video.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 5:20pmGeaux, I don’t know what you said that got some folks here all riled up, as it seems to be gone (got the gist of it though). But, from the tone of some of the comments you were successful in your button pushing goal.
Now, I don’t know your motives, and I don’t really care.
But what I do know is that there are those here who swiftly, and predictably rose to Geaux’s bait.
You need to check yourselves. You’re easy marks.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 1:44pmIf he continues to play without a helmet there should be no penalty. He should be fined for continuing the to play without proper protection. If he is still trying to tackle the ball carrier he is fair game. I doubt the blocker even noticed he was not wearing a helmet.

“The rule in the NFL is that if a ball carrier loses his helmet during a play, that play is blown dead. The rule is in place so something like this doesn’t happen:”
Uh… did you notice Mike Tolbert wasn’t the ball carrier? He was the gunner on the punt team. He wasn’t carrying the ball. He was playing (special teams) defense.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 12:34pmWhen in doubt best to take yourself out of the play when you have lost your helmet. Had this guy got his bell rung everyone would have blamed the ref or the blocker. If the player is gutsy enough to pursue at all cost then go for it. But don’t blame others if he gets hurt. Just saying….Go for it!

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 12:04pmWhy didn.t the ref blow the play dead? They seem to be losing their helmets an awful lot these days. Either the blocking is far harder than when I played, or they aren’t properly securing their straps.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 12:12pmRight now the rule is the play is blown dead only if it is a reciever or running back. I watched this game last night and this guy lost his helmet a couple of times during the game. Must be too big for him.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 12:57pmPlayers are pretty much the same – that leaves the equipment as the only difference. The helmets are obviously not the same.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 1:35pmIt’s kinda like sagging pants….there is a belt for the solution to that, and most often it is worn but improperly hence the sag effect. It is no different with the helments, the straps are there but not being used properly in an effort to look cool. In both instances, ignorance prevails against commen sense.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 1:51pmPeople lose their helmets because they are hit in the head. Either with an opposing players hands in the case of linefights and receiver/dback battles, or with their helmets in the case of tackles and open field blocking.
Sure there is occasionally a guy that just has his helmet fall off for no apparent reason because the straps either broke or weren’t properly fastened. But the vast majority of this happening are a direct result of opposing players targetting and battering the head.
