NH Residents to Vote on Offensive ‘Jew Pond’ Name Change

MONT VERNON, N.H. (The Blaze/AP) — For many long-time residents of this rural town, the quest to change the name of Jew Pond is much ado over a muddy, manmade body of water not used for much of anything besides ice skating and fishing. For more recent transplants and the town’s health officer, though, it‘s a way to banish an offensive title that’s recorded on at least one official map.

Mont Vernon’s approximately 2,400 residents will have a chance to vote Tuesday at a town meeting on whether to ask the U.S. Board of Geographic Names to officially change the Jew Pond moniker, which appears on a 1968 map but not on any town signs.

Town officials say Jew Pond, which is what most people call it, got its name in the 1920s. Town health officer Rich Masters recently took up the cause to change the name after it appeared in a news report about an algae bloom there.

“I, frankly, find it to be inappropriate, disrespectful to some people,” he said, “and I feel it needs to be changed.”

Over the years, the pond, near the center of town, has been called by many names, including Carleton Pond. A nearby sign says Carleton Park Recreation Area, though that refers to the land rather than the pond itself. The pond originally was named Spring Pond, said Masters, because the owners of a hotel there created it by digging up a spring to irrigate their golf course. They made clear in a brochure that Jewish guests were not welcome.

The rest of the story is a bit murky, but it’s generally believed that the body of water became Jew Pond when two Jewish businessmen from Boston bought the hotel. They intended to make the pond bigger and rename it Lake Serene, town officials say.

“That was when Jews were openly discriminated against,” Masters said, saying the Jew Pond name could not have been anything but pejorative.

But Mont Vernon Historical Society member Zoe Fimbel, who has lived in the town for 31 years, said there’s nothing bigoted about the Jew Pond name. She said it was more about long-time residents in the 1920s being annoyed by out-of-towners trying to turn the pond into something it was not.

“It‘s too bad it’s gotten to be such an issue when it’s never even referred to or portrayed in a negative way,” she said. “It’s more like, `It‘s the Jew’s Pond. The new man in town.’”

She said she’s been surprised by the flap and finds it ironic that one of the proposed alternate names, Frog Pond, could be offensive to French people.

“It’s really too bad how so few people make a fuss and change things that the majority wants,” she said. “Now it‘s whoever has the loudest voice and doesn’t give up. … We’re being so generic and afraid to be who we are.”

The Anti-Defamation League, an organization that says it was founded in 1913 “to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all,” sees it differently. ADL regional director Derrek L. Shulman wrote a letter to the chairman of the town’s Board of Selectmen asking for a name change.

“The very name `Jew Pond’ triggers memories of a time in our past that we can learn from – but ought not to perpetuate,” he wrote. “This represents an opportunity to send a message to the rest of the world that Mont Vernon is a place of inclusion and respect.”

But Mont Vernon also is a town proud of its history, the main reason locals argue to keep the pond’s name. Just a quarter-mile from the pond is a familiar monument in all New England towns, honoring the town’s veterans from as far back as the 47 who fought in the American Revolution.

The town, about 35 miles southwest of the state capital, Concord, has Jewish residents, but census data don’t indicate how many. The only synagogue Masters said he knew about is in Nashua, about 15 miles away. Proposed names for the pond, he said, include Carleton Pond and the original Spring Pond.

Many residents appear surprised by the kerfuffle and place it low on their list of priorities. It is Article 12 on a list of 15 for Tuesday’s town meeting, appearing after issues such as the purchase of a new pickup for the highway department and the repair or replacement of a dry fire hydrant.

People enjoying sunny weather and warm temperatures in town on Monday had mixed reaction to the proposal to change Jew Pond’s name.

“It‘s part of the town’s history,” said Brenda Bishop, who has lived in Mont Vernon for 40 years and was working at Fishbone’s General Store.

She said she feels officials have better things to worry about. Giving the pond a different name, she said, “wouldn’t be a problem, I just don’t understand the issue of wanting to change it.”

But Mary Katherine McNamara, who moved to town three years ago and has lived in Israel and in New York, which has a large Jewish population, said she‘s offended by the Jew Pond name even though she isn’t Jewish.

“If they want to use a historic name,” she said, “they should go back to Spring Pond.”

      Frankly I am surprised how much anti-semitism there is in our little state. We have a project in Epping NH that was vandalized after our first public hearing. The hearing was extremely divisive. In the time it took to drive from town hall to the project, (1.5 miles), someone vandalized a building on the project by spray painting “JEW DOG YOU LOOSE”. This was the beginning of a 4 year oddesy attempting to get permits. Apparently if you are Jewish in NH the Constitution does not protect you and the town does not have to abide by the rules.

    OK whats the big deal? Just because there is a title of Jew, Indian, Mexican, etc. does not make it degrading. I’m a Mormon in AZ we have a “Mormon Lake”. Am I offended? No, if anything I’m honored. Probably more indifferent but it is different; you don’t here too many things called Mormon.

    Since when does having something named after you an insult?

    What ever you are who cares? It’s history rewriting history does not change it.

    The people of Mont Vernon have been targeted by The Anti-Defamation League and The Jewish Federation of New Hampshire. They are pressuring the people of Mont Vernon into changing the name of ‘Jew Pond’ because it is supposedly considered ‘offensive’ to Jews. Cowards like Bishop Peter Libasci of New Hampshire’s Roman Catholic Church has decided to bend over and lick the boots of these Jews by calling for the renaming of Jew Pond as well. Ironically, Jew pond was found to have a very rapid growth of toxic bacteria in 2010. Considering the parasitic nature of Jewry, “Jew Pond’ seems like the perfect name.

    The ADL claims that it is a civil rights organization but what they really are is an organization that actively seeks the destruction of White, Christian culture. These Jewish groups stand up for the interests and self-preservation of their own kind, especially in Israel, while condemning White people for fighting for their self-preservation in the United States.       A Nazi sympathizer, a Holocaust denier, and an antisemite all wrapped up into one. You say the German people thrived under Hitler, but conveniently ignore how Poles, Slavs, Serbs, and yes even Jews were persecuted by the Nazis. Germany may have thrived but the truth is that prosperity was dependent on the war. Most of the new jobs went towards funding and supplying the troops. As a result, to keep his country productive as well as to justify the need for his absolute power, Hitler needed to continue to find new enemies to fight. Why else would he attack Russia? He already had reclaimed all that Germany had been and then some.

      I also take issue with your treating the Jews, an ethnic group, as a group united in their way of thinking. Maybe you’d like to explain why my great-grandfather, who was a butcher, and his entire family needed to leave Germany. It’s easy when you treat people as numbers instead of individuals.

      On one final note, maybe you could explain to me how Germany under the Third Reich was different than Communist Russia. In both individual rights were seen as secondary to the security of the state, the government determined how all businesses were to be run, and the government’s power was absolute. The Hitler had all the power he needed to turn Germany into a copy of Russia.

      Thanks for giving me the opportunity to answer that simple question for you TZION. You see Russia was controlled by Marxist Jews and they had no problem in slaughtering some 20-30 million of the Christian Russians during times of peace while Hitler loved his people and would have never raised a finger against anyone undeservingly..

My great-grandfather was a German Jewish man who made an honest living as a butcher. Are you going to tell me that, despite being a citizen of Germany and having taken no action to harm his country, that he deserved to be treated as an enemy.

      As for your WORTHLESS argument about letting asking Jews to leave, you have ignored three important facts. One, German Jews were citizens of Germany and owned land there so his “asking” them to leave would be like you “asking” all Jews to leave the US. Two, most of the Jews the Nazis murdered weren‘t in Germany before the war so they didn’t have that choice. Three, some Jews who did leave Germany ended up in France and were murdered anyway.

      As for Jews declaring war, don’t make me laugh. By that argument we have the right to execute all Arabs in the US because Al Qaeda declared war on us.

Did you ever see the list of names? How are those numbers “obviously false” yet the 20 million in Russia you’re always obsessing over is unquestionably correct. While we‘re at it here’s something for you to consider: Hitler would have failed to murder even 1 million if he didn’t have the support of the German people. Yet you talk as though the Jewish Bolsheviks, who even you admit only numbered in the hundreds, murdered 20 million Russians on their own without any cooperation. What happened in Russia was a civil conflict with Russians, both Jewish and Christian, lining up on both sides. If there were Jewish leaders, who was willingly serving under them?

      And as for your fear of being attacked by Jews, there are statistically more attacks by Christians against Jews than the other way around. And as for the whole NWO thing, over a third of the Jews in this country would likely find themselves in the crosshairs as well if that comes to pass, myself included.

      I think they should erect another Holocaust museum on Jew Pond in order to combat all of this rampant anti-Semitism in America… I mean I saw the other day where even Farrakhan commented on the Jewish domination of Media, Banking and commerce in general.. We all know that’s not allowed. It’s anti-Semitism to speak the truth in America! What if someone actually began questioning their role in controlling the Media… OMG could you imagine if non Jewish views were allowed to be presented by the Media in America?

      We need more Holocaust museums all across America. That’s the only answer.       Using “Jew” as an advective (or worse, as a verb) just sounds like something an anti-semite would say. The adjective is “Jewish”. And, BTW, it bothers me even more when Jews do this.

      P.S. When I was a kid, and the kids would yell “Jew” at me, I would yell back “thank you”. Of course, eventually they proceded to physical attacks.

      Or Glenn Lake… But, I like what the Jewish owners were going ot change it to: Lake Serene. Sounds so pretty.
