NHL Hockey Player…Beck Fan…Declines White House Invite in Protest

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — President Barack Obama saluted the NHL’s Boston Bruins for their 2011 Stanley Cup championship on Monday, but one key member of the team skipped the White House visit in protest.
“I believe the federal government has grown out of control, threatening the rights, liberties, and property of the people,” Goalie Tim Thomas said in a statement. The decision to stay away, Thomas said, “was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country.”
Even though Thomas, winner of the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender in the regular season and the playoff MVP, skipped the event, many of the Bruins made it to the White House.
The Bruins won their first Stanley Cup title in 39 years last June after a bruising seven-game final series against the Vancouver Canucks.
It was the latest in a string of Boston sports championships, including the Celtics in 2008, the Red Sox in 2007 and the New England Patriots in 2005. The Patriots play in next month’s Super Bowl.
“The Bruins, the Sox, the Celtics, now the Patriots. Enough already, Boston,” Obama said during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House. “What’s going on, huh?”
Obama also jokingly invoked some New England slang in welcoming the Bruins, along with the Stanley Cup, to the White House.
“I know you are all wicked happy to be here,” he said.
The president said there was no better image of the Bruins’ dominance than when Zdeno Chara, the team’s 6-foot-9 defenseman, hoisted the Stanley Cup above his head in Vancouver in celebration last spring.
“Which is, I’m sure, the highest that the Stanley Cup had ever been,” he said.
Obama drew laughter from the crowd when he cited the scrappy play of Bruins forward Brad Marchand, who emerged as a star with five goals in the last five games of the finals against Vancouver.
“‘The ’Little Ball of Hate’ shrugged off the rookie jitters,” said Obama, adding “What’s up with that nickname, man?”
There was a notable no-show. Goalie Tim Thomas, who was the playoff MVP last year, chose not to attend the event, a team spokesman said.
Obama praised the teamwork of the six-time champions.
“Together, these players proved that teamwork is everything,” he said. “It can overcome injuries, it can overcome long odds.”
Obama praised the team for its work off the ice as well, noting the Boston Bruins Foundation has donated more than $7 million to charities in New England.
“Everyone has the right to voice their opinion,” Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli told SI.com, adding that it’s “not the first time” an athlete has declined a presidential invitation.
Chiarelli told SI.com that the team had discussed the matter with Thomas in recent months.
“Whatever he will say is not reflective of our organization’s views or beliefs,” Chiarelli told the website.
In the Bruins’ 2011-12 media guide, Thomas, a Republican, cited conservative TV pundit Glenn Beck as the person he’d most like to have dinner with.
Bruins president Cam Neely said it was important to respect the wishes of their star netminder.
“Everybody has their own opinions and political beliefs. He chose not to join us,” Neely told CSNNE.com. “We certainly would have liked to have him come and join us. But it’s his choice. It’s obviously not a choice most of the guys … well all of the guys came except for Tim. But it’s his decision and his choice.”
Adding to the libertarian intrigue is the back of his goalie mask from the Olympics, last season, and this season. On the back of his mask the libertarian themed “Don’t Tread On Me” along with the Gadsden snake is prominently displayed.
I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.
This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.
Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.
This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT

To the player who didn’t attend the ceremony in protest, it won’t matter soon. You’ll be rounded up with the rest of these racists, middle class Americans. Posted on January 24, 2012 at 10:56amDear friends, for a host of political, moral, and ethical reasons I understand most supporting the hockey player snubbing the sitting President. Unfortunately, your; and in my view spot on disgust with the current occupier of the office, this act still diminishes the office and not just this man. As we become more polarized, a wide spread political stratagem, in this epic political tussle, our institutions are being battered on a daily basis. The culmination of the multi-decade destruction of all our institutions will leave us with absolutely nothing in common to rally around. I suggest we protect the institution and accurately identify the faults of the man, his policies, and his ideology.

I have to disagree with your statement as Obama’s popularity with the “Wall Street Fat-Cats” has actually declined. Mitt Romney has more than doubled the support received by Obama from Wall Street.
“Obama raised $1.6 million through Sept. 30 from securities and investment industry employees and their families. Romney, founder of the Boston-based private equity firm Bain Capital LLC, has more than doubled that, bringing in $3.6 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Four years ago, Obama raised $16 million from Wall Street; Romney, who dropped out of the Republican nomination race on Feb. 7, 2008, collected $5 million.”

If I were in his shoes, though, I wouldn’t have been as classy. By simply not showing, the media can mask and ignore his point – I’d have gone and then openly snubbed THE WON in front of the gathered crowd. Refusing to shake the President’s hand and making an open yet respectful scene would get much more reportage – this incident will go down the memory hole instead.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 12:24amI guess by utilizing that same standard, Jesse Owens should be considered a less-than admirable American due to him reportedly “shaking hands with Adolf Hitler” after his record-breaking Olympic performance. If a man such as Owens (who might have more of a reason for contention than Mr. Thomas i.e. Hitler blatant racist views) could respect the OFFICE and sovereignty of another country’s leadership, why can’t Mr. Thomas. May I say this display of class and ultimately supreme performance offered by Jesse Owens in ‘36 will always be the definition of upholding the values of freedom, liberty, and American exceptionalism that so many of us feel has departed. Many of us need to ask ourselves, despite our political differences, have we allowed our extreme dislike of Barack Obama to erode our respect for the OFFICE.

The Image of him having just won his race and beaten Hitlers’ Arien wonderboys and THEN shaking the pigs hand was much more effective in his case. Thomas by not showing up at the White House sharade is also having maximum impact. The liberal media would have totally ignored any statement he made too “the mighty O” at the event. Am I, at least, ‘in the ballpark’?
I may not be ‘qualified’ to label baseball as the “greatest game goin’”.
I must confess…I only carried on a love affair with this most beautiful of sports for 57 straight years.
Well…that’s not EXACTLY true.
Since I‘m in a ’confessin’ mood, I must admit…I did take a year off in Vietnam.
Since, as I‘m sure I don’t have to explain to you, baseball is a ‘thinkin’ man‘s’ (girls, too) game,
I found there were simply way too many ‘distractions’ (in country) to be able to savor the infinite subtleties that baseball provides.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 9:30pmAgreed. I keep praying that more with clout will awaken the Americans who are asleep and the politicians that think they can keep doing what they’ve been doing. I am not a hockey fan, but I just became a fan of Tim Thomas.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 10:40amYou’d think with more than 9% unemployment the president would have more important things to do than to try and piggyback on other peoples success. But I guess when all your ideas destroy the country anything you can latch onto to help opiate the masses is a plus in any marxist book.
