PHILADELHPIA (AP) — Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger will miss two to three weeks and spend the next few days on bed rest after taking a stick to the right eye against Toronto.
Pronger and Toronto’s Mikhail Grabovski sprinted for a loose puck in the circle after a rebound off Flyers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky on Monday night. Grabovski slapped at the puck, but his stick connected with Pronger‘s stick and the blade shot straight up into the defenseman’s face.
Pronger screamed in agony and instantly clutched his face. Hunched over, he skated straight to the bench, his hands over his eyes, and went to the dressing room with 8:02 left in the first period.
Pronger does not wear a visor. General manager Paul Holmgren said Pronger would not be cleared to play unless he wears one. Holmgren said Pronger complained of blurred vision.
“I think he was very scared and rightly so,” Holmgren said. “When something like that happens to your eye, you‘re worried about what’s going on. I think he settled down over a period of time and was fine when he left.”
The Flyers beat the Maple Leafs 4-2.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 2:20pmSounds painful… Get well soon. Best wishes. Not a hockey fan, used to play lacrosse when I was a kid, though. Them sticks hurt.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 4:45pmKarma’s a b*tch.
Glad he’s not hurt though… although he screamed like a co-ed in a panty raid.
Wonder how many players he’s sent off the ice in a similar fashion with one of his cheap shots?

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 12:31pmAs dangerous as this sport is, he clearly should have been wearing a visor. I got sympathy pains when I read this, too. Thanks, really.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 11:59amPeople that don‘t like Pronger are the same people that don’t like Crosby, Ovechkin, Chara and so on. They suffer from roster envy. Get well soon, Chris. Let‘s Go Flyers and let’s go Don Earl!

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 10:33amGlad Pronger is going to be okay, no one likes to see that. I tell ya though, the new sticks are so light today, they’re actually more dangerous than the old wooden sticks in my opinion.
Report Post »Too bad the Leafs lost; we sure didn’t play well; neither did Philly actually, but when ya let a guy like Jagr loose on a breakaway with the puck, bad things happen.
Get well soon Chris!

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 12:26pmI watched that game.Pronger did what he has done his entire careeer by blocking a shot with his stick. A face shield may have helped but it looked like the balde hit him with the edge, not the flat, of the stick. Bummer part, injuries like this take a long tome to heal and could end his career.
From my point of view, Flyers did good. YEAH, that‘s right I’m a Philly guy.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 9:55amWell, back in the day, a lot of players didn‘t wear helmuts since the protective technology wasn’t good anyways.
What I wonder is why there are a lot less people wearing the full plexi-glass shields they used to use back in the 90′s. I remember a good amount of players wore those.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 9:12amThese guy is one of the biggest cheap shot artists in the NHL. Good! Couldn’t happen to a worse guy. I’ma big “pro-fight” fan of the NHL, but this guy doesn’t fight fair and well-known as the ultimate asshat of the league. Man I hate this clown!

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 11:22amWhile I agree with your assessment of Pronger being a cheapshot artist, why do you think it is ok that physical harm comes to anyone? You are part of the problem with society.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 9:09amI had a person run right into me in a theater and hit me hard in the eye. An eye scratch is really painful, but an abrasion, which this guy probably has, takes longer to heal and is constant agony for days without medication. You CAN’T move the eye because it rubs against the lid and is excrutiating. Only acute apendicitis disabled me more than that. Even after it “heals” it can leave a scar on the cornea that remains VERY sensitive afor months, even years, and useually is worst after a night’s sleep.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 9:04amAs a hockey player and an amateur ref for many years, there is no way I would ever play or ref without a visor of face mask, at any level!! Pro hockey players especially are stupid for not protecting their own livelihood, and amateur players have no excuse either.
Hockey is a beautiful sport, but it is probably one of the most dangerous. Your playing with sticks and a rock, everything your mother warned you about.
To be fair it took me getting a stick in the eye before I put one on.
