NHL Player Picks Up Super-Famous Hitchhiking Rockstar

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — This was one nifty assist by an NHL player.

Edmonton Oilers center Gilbert Brule stopped this week to pick up a most unlikely hitchhiker — rock star Bono.

The U2 frontman and his assistant were walking in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on Tuesday when they got caught in the rain. Fortunately for them, Brule and his girlfriend were driving by, taking their German shepherd to a park.

Bono hopped in for a ride. To thank them, he offered Brule and his girlfriend backstage passes for the U2 concert Wednesday night at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium. The couple sold their tickets to Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals between Boston and Vancouver, took a flight back to Edmonton and went to the show with Brule’s mom.

“I like people who play ice hockey — they stop for hitchhikers. I know this from experience,” Bono told the concert crowd.

“I was hitchhiking in Vancouver yesterday, actually I was! And this guy and his girlfriend picked me up. He was cool, an ice hockey player, his name was Gilbert Brule as it happens, I‘m so grateful I’ve decided I want to be Gilbert Brule.”

With hockey on his mind, Bono compared his bandmates to former Oiler greats, calling The Edge, “The Wayne Gretzky of U2.”

“We go to walk our dog and Bono ends up in our car,” Brule told the Edmonton Journal.

The 24-year-old Brule missed half of this season because of illnesses, intestinal problems, a sprained ankle and a concussion.

Who’s Bono? Was he once married to Cher? I thought a rouge tree did him in.

*****, met with Bush many times for increased aids funding. Bush gives one Billion for aids in Africa, the most ever given, and now that moron-in-chief is in the Whire House, trashes Bush all the time politically. Mr. “we all need to pay more taxes” to take care of the world’s poor keeps his money out of Ireland in tax havens. Has become a bigger liberal idiot over time. Oh, and nothing worth a crap since the 80′s, musically speaking.

Game 1, where the Canucks beat the Bruins with 18.5 seconds left in regulation play? Hard to say if I’d have done. Mind you, Game 2 was even more exciting cuz the Canucks beat the Bruins again, 11 seconds into the 1st O/T period.

Yes, I’m shamelessly promoting a pro-Canadian Stanley Cup agenda. Sorry Stu Burguiere – I’m not a U2 fan.

Bono ? Big deal. He’s a nobody. When Jerry Garcia ( or Phil, Bobby, Mickey, or Billy,) gets in my car…I’ll know I have arrived !

Arrived? No, when Jerry Garcia gets in your car you’ll know you’ve departed, because he’s been dead for fifteen years.

I’ve followed U2 from a distance for over twenty years. Though i don’t agree with all of what Bono says and does, he does have his heart in the right place. He has recenty drifted further left. I probably would’ve picked him up regardless of the way he feels about Obumbler.

I agree. I don’t get all the hate. Because he likes Obama? He worked with George W. Bush too, and praised him publicly for the good he did in Africa. His willingness to work with anyone who can help even if he disagrees with them on a lot of issues is something I wish our stupid American politicians would learn from. Of all the celebrities who do humanitarian work, he always struck me as the smartest, who does the most real good on the most important problems. Does he come of as a self-righteous prig sometimes? Yeah, but he walks the walk, too.

      A Bono joke.

Bono is know for being a major do-gooder for just about any charity for the poor and hungry. During a concert several years ago, Bono halted a song midway through and started calling for the lights to come down in the venue until just a lone spotlight shone on him. He then called for everyone in the audience to be utterly quiet. He then began walking willy-nilly around the stage slowly clapping his hands while looking out upon the audience. This went on for a few minutes, until finally he walked to the microphone (continuing to clap) and shouted “EVERY TIME I CLAP MY HANDS…ANOTHER CHILD IN AFRICA DIES!”

At which point, a rather drunk concert-goer near the front row, shouted in a thick Irish brogue..”WELL THEN…STOP DOING IT, YA BLOODY EVIL BASTARD!”

Why would someone like Bono be hitchhiking? What a moron. He could have called just about any one and got a ride. I would have.

Until I found out it was Bono.

Then, I would have dumped his guilt-ridden globalist egotistical butt right out of my car.

      No backstage tickets for me?

      aww.

I believe that it would be a lot more beneficial to you to learn EVERY aspect of regional dialect instead of trying to make yourself feel important. Going around bragging to your friends that “hey, I made all those conservatives learn to speak proper english” is a non-winner for you. I‘D A BETCHA DAT YA’ WOULDA MADE MORE FRIENDS AND HAVE FEWER OF DEM CONSERVATIVES LAUGHIN’ ATCHA!
