Niall Ferguson: The U.S. Has Lost its Competitive Edge and There’s Only One Place to Put the Blame…

Niall Ferguson, the historian and economist who has been warning the U.S. about its faltering economy for years, is back and he has a troubling study in tow.

During an interview with Bloomberg TV, Ferguson cites a new Harvard Business School (HBS) study that claims the U.S. has fallen behind in global economic competitiveness.

For instance, the January study found that for “Harvard alums personally involved in a company relocation decision, 57 percent said the decision ‘involved the possibility of moving existing activities out of the U.S.,’” Rob Wile of Business Insider reports.

“Meanwhile, only 9 percent considered moving existing activities from another country into the U.S.,” he adds.

Watch Ferguson discuss the HBS report (via Bloomberg):

“A U.S.-based respondent was three times as likely to be considering moving business activity out of the U.S. than a non-U.S. respondent was likely to be considering moving an activity into the U.S,” writes Professor Michael Porter, the study’s author.

The below chart from the HBS study shows current vs. expected American industry sector global success. As the chart clearly indicates, the respondents believe there will be a decline in competitiveness in all industries:

Niall Ferguson: The U.S. Has Lost its Competitive Edge and Theres Only One Place to Put the Blame…Click for a larger image.

And as far as “competitiveness” is concerned, literally no one believes things are going to improve:

Niall Ferguson: The U.S. Has Lost its Competitive Edge and Theres Only One Place to Put the Blame…Click for a larger image.

So what’s the deal? Why the dismal outlook?

Apparently, U.S. businesses hate the U.S. economy for a couple of simple reasons: “[T]hey can‘t stand the tax code and they can’t stand politicians,” Business Insider’s Joe Weisenthal writes.

Taxes, uncertainty, and regulations; it’s as simple as that (as this chart clearly indicates):

    Who is John Galt?

    Read Atlas Shrugged.
When those who don’t produce depend on those who do.
When those with no ability demonize and punish those with ability.
When those with the greatest need become the standard that the best must be reduced to.
Give up, give out, give in.

Ayn Rand worshipped Freedom. Something Communist Russia denied her. Freedom of speech, freedom to produce, freedom to consume, freedom to climb as high one can.
Freedom to try. Even though she was an atheist russian she was more America then 90% of your liberal socialist party.

      Are you sure?
I think she worshiped life, her own life. Her greedy little life that she was living for her own sake.
Somehow she had the gall to believe that her life belonged to her, to live as she pleased.
What does it mean to be the owner of yourself? What does it take to live? What does it mean to hold your life as your greatest treasure? If greed is valuing your own life above all else, then yes greed of this kind is what she worshiped.
But don’t confuse this with greed for the unearned, or greed that requires sacrifice. Sacrifice of others to one’s self or self sacrifice.
Whose morality requires sacrifices? Sacrifice meaning exchanging something more valuable for something less valuable.

It is obvious that commentor Encinom never read it. Atlas Shrugged was about the Government’s crony capitalism. It was about suceessfull producers being torpedoed by political self-serving politicians and race and poverty merchants extorting their way until all business colapsed. However, the the achievers left…… Does it sound familiar? Gee maybe that is why it has re-emerged lately; because it is coming true

@ encinomoron – bless your heart. Have you considered joining a debate team? Do they have one at your school? If not, perhaps once you get into high school. Once there you can also pick up tips (at least somewhat) from Geometry and Algebra II classes when you learn about proofs. Generally the structure is and “if, then, so”. It is not generally considered effective to engage in circular “reasoning” An example of this is “X” is stupid because he is so stupid.

Another helpful course would be Rhetorical Writing, though I recommend first investing in and familiarizing yourself with a Thesaurus. I don’t think the teacher would be as impressed with your skills until you improve your vocabulary, especially concentrate on adjectives. If you work hard, you may get the hang of the principles even if you don’t master the skill

Oh, sorry “liberal socialist party” could mean Republican or Democrat Party now.

Government control of a country’s economy—any kind or degree of such control, by any group, for any purpose whatsoever—rests on the basic principle of statism, the principle that man’s life belongs to the state (not to their greedy self).

but perhaps @encinom should start at the beginning.
      A=A
      Existence exists.
The task of man’s consciousness is to perceive, not to create, reality.
Man’s mind is his only tool to gain knowledge.

Then do as Glenn Beck and Ayn Rand suggests: Question the moral code that you have adopted and see where it is leading you.
it is much easier to have a knee jerk kick in the crotch reaction to this.
It is much easier to tune it all out and go with the flow.
Rational thinking is volitional, you must choose to do it.

Bad or selfish people can come up with some good ideals or good works. The Communist Berthhold Brecht wrote & continuously rewrote Mother Courage. He tried to write a communist screed & portray Mother Courage as a villain. He tried to get audiences to hater her but they loved her. So he kept rewriting his play.

I don‘t care if Ayn Rand didn’t solve the question of “life the Universe & everything” & was rewarded with a halo for perfect behavior. That is a tall order to ask of anyone. She grew up in Soviet Russia, tired to makes sense of it, so that it made no sense & so wrote about it She wasn’t perfect. Waaah. Cry me a river.

I’ve never heard of the dude, so look him up. It started off well with his schooling/credentials, then I got to the following quote about the wars in Iraq and was turned off:

“It’s all very well for us to sit here in the west with our high incomes and cushy lives, and say it’s immoral to violate the sovereignty of another state. But if the effect of that is to bring people in that country economic and political freedom, to raise their standard of living, to increase their life expectancy, then don’t rule it out”.

Here’s the thing… Some of us living in the west didn’t have cushy high income jobs. We went over there and killed a lot of people, and it was immoral. I‘m pretty sure I’m going to burn in hell for it (if there is a hell) I’d like to ask Mr. Ivy Leaque professor how killing a million plus Iraqis increased their life expectancy. Just goes to show that some of the most educated people have absolutely no common sense. What’s easy is to sit in an ivory tower and talk about war. It‘s a lot different to have the blood on your hands either for oil or because they wouldn’t submit to the NWO. Remember Harvard has its member in the CFR too. These kinds of elitests are some real sick puppies. It‘s would be best if GB stays away from him because he’s obviously turning into a huge neocon as it is. An interesting proposition – that of a dis-union of the union. My recommendation would be that the “Progressive States of America” are allotted for their new sovereign utopia the current states of Oregon, Washington, Northern California, Idaho and some territory in Northern Nevada. Rest belongs to the heirs and successors of the founding fathers; i.e. the “United States of American Liberty”. Based on the nominal representation of self-professed liberals in the current US, roughly 20-23% of overall population, this would be a very fair allocation of territory, resources and infrastructure for them to live out their progressive dreams.

Of course, their would be some ideological cleansing on the part of both new sovereigns, as those who are currently residing in what they foresee to be undesirable locations, or whom are considered undesirable by the new landlords, relocate to the country in which they choose to live. If it could be done relatively amicably and with minimal violence it would likely be the best solution for everyone.

Once everyone is relocated to their new country of choice, those in the USAL must be sure to high-fence, electrify and heavily militarize the borders with PSA so that they are forever kept within their utopian land of equal misery for all…

Flat Tax and Fiscal restraint such as shock collars and german shepperds!!! Simple formula when Tax revenue, falls spending falls. These bozos in D.C. think that if revenue falls spending should increase…….and we wonder why credit card interest rates are SO HIGH?

Remember, they only run for office because they are societal misfits. They haven’t a clue about fiscal restraint. They hate the private sector because these people are real. Why do we expect them to get anything real.
      Truth escapes them

Here is the Democrat Liberal Progressive cycle of insanity.

Raise taxes – create more programs – raise taxes – create more programs – raise taxes -create more programs.

It is never ending for them. They have gotten into his rut of thinking that Americans are their personal bank. Sorry this ATM is closed and broke thanks to Obama. United Bank of COFemale is bankrupt. I’ve gone from middle class to poverty – thanks Obama – thumbs up on that one – NOT. The difference is I am trying to pull myself back up and not relying on WELFARE OR FOOD STAMPS, but it is hard and difficult. I may not survive.

I agree. Our income hasn’t gone backwards, but our expenses have all gone up. Unfortunately, my income has flatlined since 2008, so the effect is the same.

My salary had been steadily increasing for years. This is the longest period I’ve gone in 13 years without a raise.

You want America to be move competative simple make right a constitutional law,cut taxes, end NAFTA,revamp civil courts so that those filing frivilous laws suits are responsible to pay the defenses fees, lose time and punative damages if they lose and re-establish the old tariff systems.
Then you hit the EPA,NLRB,and other agencies that overtly inhibit the abilities for businesses to work.
Thats a starter then you end the entire department of education put education in the hands of the families of the children in each area, establish trad eschools in place of general education for those who really don’t belong in college in the first place.
This will get us on the right track. We should also teach todays brightest minds about how entitlement societys, and overt goevrnment intrussion nearly destroyed this nation.
That or we or we un-unite the united states and start from stratch.

You mean like the US was before 1963. Before Lyndon Johnson gave us the “Great Society”, the “War on Poverty” and the escalation of US involvement in Viet Nam.

JJ, you are quite right. It is funny (not) that so many R’s tout NAFTA as a good thing when in fact our nation rose to greatness without it. NAFTA is an internationalist organization based on the GATT after WWII. It was the foundation for the EU, a process that eradicated national currencies and relegated nations like Germany, Spain, Italy, etc. to nothing more than states within a new, bigger nation.

Education is a huge issue here in the U.S. Most American schools are dysfunctional. The feds should be out of education. States should control the issue and be able to rid the schools of kids who refuse to adhere to discipline. Schools populated by undisciplined kids who disrupt and oppress good kids who want to learn ****** the entire system of education. One bad apple spoils the whole bunch.

As for American economic woes, we Americans now look to the President to “save us”. Wrong. The POTUS is not a king. He is an executive. We must stop looking to the “king” for salvation. We the People are the only ones who can fix our problems. Stop electing the repeat offenders (ie., career politicians).

We can fix this. It will be EXTREMELY hard work. To balance the budge and pay off the debt, we will all have to take some very hard hits.

Exactly DV We to move away from an entitlement society and create a business friend enviroment. If the federal government won’t do then it will be up to the states to not only create the enviroment but shut the fed out of it.

“They can‘t stand the tax code and they can’t stand Politicians…” well, most Americans cant’…only the lunatic fringe left liberal Marxist Morons applaud Barry, cheer for higher taxes and demonize the job creators, ‘those evil capitilists pigs’…and they can’t even see how stupid and out of touch with reality they are…myopic useful idiots.
