New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is known for telling it like he sees it. At a town hall meeting yesterday in Raritan, NJ, he made sure to bolster that reputation. The fireworks start in the beginning and go until about 1:53.
The rest of the video is worth watching, however, as Christie explains how the teacher‘s union in the state refused to compromise to save the state’s crucial education dollars.

Posted on September 14, 2010 at 1:39pmMaybe the other way around. The citizens might see a black conservative as president and realize color is quite unimportant. It would free up Christie to say what neets to be said without having it be considered an official executive position. My only concern with Christie is the Peter Principal – would he be as good a President/VP as he is a governor? In any case, love his direct plain no BS talk. Imagine the Congress uproar when he got done with them!
One other thought, while Sarah Palin may or may not be the best President ever, there would be a huge value to having the first woman President be a conservative. That is probably why the liberals attempt to degrade her at every turn. They are scared to death that that might happen!!!!!!

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 9:32amMakes you want to move to NJ. I taught for over 20 years and left the education field to work in the business world. The reason for leaving was the decline of a system that was led by people with no spine. If there was just one person with the backbone of Gov. Christie in the school system I taught, I would still be teaching. Instead, I left teaching, and a salary of over $70k, over 6 years ago to start at the bottom and work up. Teachers have it way too good with their automatic yearly raises just for teaching another year.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 9:12amYes, public employees, of all stripes, are going to have fits like we’ve never seen before when their golden wage and benefit packages get rolled back to reality. Our politicians dare to suggest that the private sector retirement age gets raised to 70, while public sector people retire after 30 years, with incredible and generous pensions? Trouble on the horizon in this arena.
Personally, I am so tired of hearing teachers particularly, whine about buying supplies for their classrooms, and brag about their wonderful schools. The reality is public education is failing miserably, even with each classroom of say twenty kids being endowed with $240,000.00(using $12K per student, as an average) to get the job done. Absurd. Were it private industry producing this result, at those costs, they wouldn’t last 6 months, and rightfully so.
Governor Christie, keep fighting the good fight. You are square on.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 9:32amSister Marie Vianney had thirty-five children in her classroom. She had no assistants. Children brought their own supplies. My parents paid the local parish to provide the school. The results were children who could read and write and do math. When those children reached high school they were prepared for higher learning.
The education I received throughout the 1950‘s was far superior to the education my children received in the 1980’s. What has gone so far wrong in the education of our population?

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 11:52pmR and K–Do you have a job? Are you expected pay money when your employer doesn’t provide the supplies necessary to make your job run smoothly? When a client comes in hungry because they didn’t have breakfast, do you feed them? You wouldn’t expect a police officer to pay for his own bullets, gas up his patrol car, pay for the maintenance of that patrol car. You wouldn’t expect a grocery clerk to pay for the boxes and bags needed to put your groceries in, or to pay for the cash register or the electricity to run that cash register. Why should you expect a teacher to pay for supplies that a school or parent should be supplying to run that school? When was the last time you set foot in a classroom? Do you even know what happens in your local school? Have you been to a school board meeting and spoke your mind about the budget? Do you know the budget process in your local district? Are you willing to donate your time to sit on a budget committee for your school district? If your school is failing, why haven’t you gone to a school board meeting to find out why? It’s easy to blame the teachers for everything. It’s much harder to give your time to fix the problems you blame the teachers for.
Report Post »beekeeper
Posted on September 10, 2010 at 9:50amPFNW – Teachers choose their profession, they choose the district they will work in, and they choose to buy supplies out of their own pocket. What do all three of those things have in common? Choice. I’ll wager that if the local school districts in NJ offered teachers a choice, they wouldn’t give up a dime of salary INCREASES to create a fund to purchase school supplies, and do you know why? Because they have a vested interest in getting their annual salary as high as possible, since their pensions (at least here in NJ) are calculated by dividing their years of service by 55, then multiplying that times their last three-years salary to determine their pension.
Please justify a 4.9% average salary raise in a time with 0-1% inflation rate?
My local district has 3/4ths of our budget tied-up in non-negotiable expenses (debt service and teacher salaries and benefits), subtract debt service, and teachers salaries and benefits are fully 2/3rds of our annual budget, and this school year our teachers salaries increased by almost $1M, and their healthcare, dental and eye care costs went up 10-15% over the previous year. We have 4,000 kids in our district and our kids do well in school, but the teacher expense has gotten out of control.
We have kindergarten teachers earning $85K/yr without advanced degrees – please explain to me how that is under-paid or unappreciated.
The last Gov Christie viral video had a teacher that complained to Gov. Christie that she deserved to be paid $83K/year, and as it turned out she was making $86K and change as I recall – she apparently either has no idea what she is being paid OR she assumed that everyone would just accept whatever she says without question…

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 1:43pmHey! We got Christie because we voted him in…Don’t push Obama off on all of us because the nation voted for him! I’m looking at these postings comparing the salary of a teacher with our Governor. I know some of our best and brightest teachers are not being rewarded but we can’t seem to get anyone to consider the idea of merit raises for those who go above and beyond. I mixed chemo and pain meds for hospice patients and received $10 an hour for my work. Am I less important than a teacher? If your family member were dying of cancer would my work become more important to you then? I worked for 27 years in a specialized field of pharmacy tech and cared about those who were in my care. I trained each new technician to see each patient as their dearest family member and to treat the patient to that level of care. I never made more than 17 dollars an hour and cared for over 700 patients/week. You can’t pay people to care…either they do the work from love, honor, and integrity or they treat it as a job that just puts food on the table.
Report Post »I honor the work that a teacher does. I’m tired of hearing that they deserve more because of what they do for our kids. We all do what we can in our work to help those we serve. Please stop telling me pity stories and give me examples of those who did the work from the heart. Having families lose their homes because they can’t pay their realestate taxes to pay for pensions and union benefits, or having kids programs cut to meet union and teacher demands while issuing new bonds and increasing taxes for necessary work to our schools is unnacceptable. We can’t give from an empty well. Aren’t we all supposed to be working together?

Any idea of what out of that 175k goes straight to taxes and personal security for himself and his family. And “NO” i’m sure the state does not provide ample security for him, it most certainly comes out of his or his Supporters pockets,, needless to say the level of responsibility from a Teacher to a Governor is like comparing the Salary of an employee to that of,…. not a manager,…. not a Supervisor,…. not a CEO !,, He’s the Governor!!!! He is responsible for the Budget of a STATE. I‘ll bet you any of the teachers that are howling over the 1 percent they were asked to take as a pay cut would not for the life of them have the stones to go head to head with the teacher’s Unions. They wouldn’t take the 175K a year,,, not at a cost of being bashed daily by your state for acting responsibly.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 11:12amYou need to look up the Cloward and Piven Strategy and keep in mind that the union leaders came from the same group of people as they. Of course they won’t take the cut, this is EXACTLY what they want. Their goal from the beginning was to load up the system with entitlements and get as many people on gov’t rolls as they could, then when the gov‘t can’t afford it anymore and has to make cuts, the ones willing to try look like the bad guy. The unions will rise up and protest causing civil unrest. They will all vote for the dems because they don’t want to lose their unaffordable entitlements so the dems control power, the system eventually collapses under its own weight and when it does they already have a new system in place waiting…. why do you think many of these huge bills (stimulous, healthcare, financial reform) don’t kick in until 2012 or 2014? Because they hope to have the economic collapse by then.
They are not only loading down the system with union entitlements, also with unemployment compensation (hence the lack of effort to fix the jobs situation), welfare (again, with unemployment on the rise we now have the highest level of welfare recipients in history), healthcare, illegal immigration… they know darn well we can’t afford to have all these illegals coming in and getting healthcare, school w/o paying taxes, foodstamps etc etc…. but they welcome them because it will help the economic collapse come faster. They don’t care about the muslims wanting a mosque at ground zero, they are only defending it to add to the civil unrest, to keep people angry and fighting with each other. Never let an emergency go to waste. They have been plotting this for decades and while we are all sitting around bickering dems vs repubs or mosque vs. no mosque, or illegals vs. no illegals they are sitting back loving it because this was their goal all along.
If you think I sound like a conspiracy theorist, look it up…. Cloward and Piven strategy…. also read the Weather Underground Manifesto “It Doesn’t Take Weatherman to Know Which Way the Wind Blows” which you can get for free on glennbeck.com. The economy is collapsing all around us and they are keeping us busy arguing with each other.
Please for the love of God… even the liberals have so much to lose if their plan goes through. You should stop wasting your time adding fuel to the fire, because in the end you will be in the bread line with the rest of us, waiting for your loaf of bread and government cheese. Only this time, it will be global – there will be no America to run to.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 12:12pmSo what? The head of the state makes more than three times the average teacher in NJ – there are a few differences: All a teacher needs is a BA and a Teaching Cert, the Gov has to convince the majority of voters to support him/her. The Gov is responsible for a state budget that exceeds $10BN, the average teacher has a classroom budget of about $200 for school supplies.
Oh, and the Gov has term limits, he/she has to re-apply/run for his job every few years – teachers, once tenured, are essentially employed for life.
I work in public school education in NJ, and I think the $55K/yr figure for teachers is low – in my district teachers earn $55K after about 4-5 years on the job… Starting pay in my district is $50,102.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 1:11pmI understand that teachers are upset. After all these paragons of virtue in our town claim we are harming our children with Christie as Governor. Maybe the teachers and their union should look in the mirror…they let our Paraprofessionals take the hit with frozen wages and reduced benefits but refused to even consider reducing theirs! I live in NJ. I went to Ocean County College with some of our teachers and watched them attempt to cheat on their exams and scapegoat the one who turned them in. Be careful not to get sucked out of our schools at quitting time…the best teachers can’t be rewarded because the worst are protected. The teacher’s union used their employees dues to canvas and advertise for their favorite Dem candidates. How is that fair to those who vote Republican? Also, in our town the Board of Ed employees watch the voting booth (their right), and report back to the school who votes and who doesn’t as well as any comments an employee makes while voting. Does any one still care about a private ballot?

The way I look at it, a teacher works about 190 days a year and 9 hours a day. This equates to over $32.00 per hour at $55k per year. Of course, that means that half of the teachers make MORE than that! Although it’s a very honorable profession, I now consider their constant complaint of being underpaid on the same level with Al Sharpton crying racism. I no longer believe it nor have any sympathy for them. They all need to read “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”. They’ve over-played their hand.

Posted on September 10, 2010 at 2:22pmMy only response regarding teachers – they are needed, I am glad that they CHOSE to go to school for a degree as a teacher, they CHOSE to accept their post with their CHOICE of school, and they did all of these CHOICES knowing full well UPFRONT that they would make an AVERAGE salary of $55k per year.
If you are given CHOICES then you must accept the CONSEQUENCES of these CHOICES. That is what we’re all about with any “tea party movement” – accept the consequences of MY choices – learn, study and contribute to my sphere of influence in a positive, service oriented way. Don’t complain, don‘t judge and don’t critize my because you don’t like YOUR CHOICE!

Posted on September 12, 2010 at 11:51pmGlennBeckIsADemagogue: I find it inconceivable that you could actually have typed that drivel and thought to yourself “Wow, that will show them!” Granted the pay for many teachers is inadequate, but to imply that a governor of a state shouldn’t make $175,000 proves your total lack of any substantial grasp on reality. Governors hold the safety, wellbeing, and the trust of millions of people in their hands, and need to be on call 24/7-365. Only a true socialist would begrudge someone with that responsibility a commensurate salary. Typical. No argument that teachers, too, bear a great responsibility, but it is still a 9 month a year job, for 8-10 hour s a day-even with grading papers (God forbid you use a RED PEN!) My wife taught for 20 years, it was her aim to teach children how to think and give them the tools to become productive member of society. Today, that is certainly a daunting task, especially given the sorry state of far too many of our public schools. Unfortunately, thanks to the unions, it is more often a case of an inadequately qualified, left-leaning indoctrinator teaching our children to become a entitlement driven drain on society; much like themselves.

Posted on September 15, 2010 at 5:52pmYou are the childish one. The Governor’s salary is piddling for his responsibilities and hard work. $55,000 for a beginning teacher is too much, in my opinion. It’s only there because of the bully union bosses. Many teachers don’t deserve even that. My son-in-law is a Teacher of the Year, and he knows what goes on. He is the exception, not the norm.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 8:55amthe sad reality is Christie is a lonely voice in a sea of liberalism. Once these benefits get into place it takes an act of God to roll them back. Take a look at Sarkosy in France. He wants to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62. French union response — this is unjust. it is apparantly a civil right now in France to retire at age 60.

http://bit.ly/cMml7U
and check out some of the past audio at http://taxpayerminute.com/
He is busily supporting the National repub candidate against the tea party candidate in Delaware and trying to shove cap and trade down our throats at the state level.
Christie needs to have his feet held to the fire constantly or he will bend things back to big government. He came ( and was pushed on the tea parties throats) from inside the beltway and I don’t think he has left it far behind. I am very afraid that he will end up leaving people with the impression that budget cuts mean bad education and fewer police and fire fighters all the while we are still funding parks and event venues. And with all that our state budget has not gotten smaller and we are facing energy taxes that will curb growth even more than what we currently have. I‘m not saying he’s bad, just that he isn’t as good as he should be. Don’t envy us in NJ, learn the lessons we are learning. Never ever trust folks from inside the beltway.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 4:33pmWell Done Gov. Cristie, Glenn Beck let me know about this interchange and i agree with you position, we need to cut wasteful spending. The school unions of NJ needs to decide if they want to help with the budget crisis and be part of the solution or remain a hinderance and babykick the entire way. The head of the Union’s comments on the death to the Gov. is not only immature but is no surprise to me that that is the best leadership they have to continue their liberal campaigns. So listen up Teachers Union, get you act together and get rid of such cancerous leadership in your ranks, become a part of the solution in reducing costs in education, else get your change in diapers ready because there will be more cuts coming your way. Seriously, it’s time to reduce costs – what don’t you get about that, and while i agree that the Education of our children is critically important, its how it is done and at what cost is what needs to be prioritized here.

But I do realize that he has his agenda as well; and you can bet it is not to help the most vulnerable segment of our population. He embraces the notion that our enemies are the teachers who earn “an average of $55,000 @yr” and get free health insurance. What about the political appointments to The Delaware River/Bay Authority who make twice that for 1/4 of the work? It is always the little guy who will make up the difference in budget balancing because there are more of them then the board members! I would like to see changes at the top first…but perhaps that’s not the American Way. I am not a “party affiliate” on either side so I have come to distrust most politicians.
