NJ Town Sees 6 Shootings in 5 Hours

New Jersey has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Those laws, apparently, aren’t having much of an affect on criminals in the town of Jersey City. That’s where, during a five-hour span on New Year’s Eve, the town averaged over one shooting an hour.

“We had a perfect storm,” Jersey City Police Chief Thomas Comey told the Jersey Journal. “Alcohol and gunpowder don’t mix.”

The Journal reports “cops arrested two people and recovered two illegal handguns after responding to six shooting incidents that resulted in five gunshot victims hospitalized between 11:40 p.m. Friday and 4:45 a.m. Saturday.”

NJ.com details the shootings:

Friday, 11:40 p.m.: A 16-year-old boy was shot three times in the stomach and once in the back on Grant Avenue by two men with handguns, according to Jersey City Police Department spokesman Lt. Edgar Martinez. Yesterday, the boy was listed in stable condition at an area hospital, officials said.

Saturday, 2:04 a.m.: Police arrested Rashauon Johnson, 31, of Fulton Avenue in Jersey City, who was shot in the abdomen during a shootout outside Brenda’s Place at 269 Ocean Ave., police said. Johnson, who remained hospitalized last night, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and various weapons related charges, officials said.

2:23 a.m.: Police met a 21-year-old Irvington man at a Virginia Avenue house who had been shot in both hips. Witnesses said he had been involved in an argument with other men, according to reports.

2:59 a.m.: Police were called to help a 26-year-old victim who was standing on the sidewalk on Bidwell Avenue near Ocean Avenue with a non-life threatening gunshot in the left buttock, police said.

4:09 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a hotel room with at least 6 guests at the Candlewood Suites Hotel on Second Street where a 20-year-old Gates Avenue man sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound in the right thigh. The victim told police that one of the male guests shot him in the leg while he was in the bathroom with the shooter and his brother. Police reports didn’t explain yesterday what the three men were doing in the bathroom together.

4:45 a.m.: At 254 Halladay St., police officers heard five gunshots and saw a muzzle flash from a window of the building, police said. Inside, officers found an aggravated assault victim bleeding from the face, mouth and head. The man had been beaten, not shot, police said. Police searched a top-floor apartment where they found a loaded Cobray M-11 9 mm handgun.

Last month, when confronted with the idea that criminals don’t abide by gun laws, a CNN panelist suggested more aggressive gun laws as a remedy.

Gun control will never work. Most people will have them one way or another, especially with the totalitarian direction this country is now going in. If the people that used guns unjustly were truly prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and kept behind bars instead of getting back on the streets, there wouldn’t be so many shootings and killings. Our courts need to be stricter with their sentencing, and the judges in the pockets of some of the people running the mafia and other evil enterprises need to be prosecuted themselves. If you have enough money you can buy anything in this country and that includes a crooked judge who lets people off with a slap on the wrist.

We’ve tried registration. We’ve tried waiting periods. We’ve tried background checks. We’ve tried different types of carry permits. I can‘t see where we’ve had much success with any of these. Why don’t we try something different? An unfettered, unregulated, literal interrpretation of the stinking 2nd amendment.

It’s sort of ironic that in what many call the “wild” west of the mid to late 19th century we had fewer gun deaths per capita than most places today where there are laws and laws and more laws restricting guns. Before the libs go wild, I will admit, due to differences in record keeping and other factors, this last statement is nearly impossible to prove. But, could it really be much worse than it is now?

Our rights do come from God, the only problem is most governments have convinced themselves that they ARE God. Time to do something different.

It’s time we practice CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY nationwide.

CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY is the un-infringed right to carry a firearm for defense of self, others and property, loaded and available for immediate employ in the event of a spontaneous confrontation anywhere at anytime.

We have the undeniable and unalienable right to life. Therefore we have the unalienable right to defend that life and the lives of others AND property!

That’s the fundamental, human right we’re born with and should have had the opportunity to practice the last 235 years or thereabout!

By the way, since we have the unalienable right to own property and the Supreme Court has ruled more than once that no level of government can charge us a tax, fee or require a license to exercise a fundamental right, why do we continue to allow them to charge us “ownership” and “real property” taxes? Any legal eagles want to clear this up for me. Thanks.

The illogical “more gun laws” argument is amazing. When you disarm the populace by passing a law (no matter how strict), the only people who will be disarmed are the law-abiding citizens. Does anyone really believe that criminals are going to say, “Oh, I guess I can’t use a gun now while I commit crime, because it is against the law.”??? So all the bad guys are going to just get rid of their guns? Reallly? So either every person who promotes gun control is just out and out stupid, or they are trying to accomplish some other goal. I submit that it is the latter. The goal here is to make owning guns seem “bad” to the general public. We are fed this bogus line about guns being too dangerous to have in our homes because of the children(do you notice how many of the progressive agendas are pushed on us “for the sake of the children”?). Yes, there are accidents with guns and children and when it happens it is terrible. But more children are killed in swimming pool accidents (by far) than by gun accidents. So should we ban swimming pools?

As less and less of the population owns guns, the larger percentage of guns are owned by criminals and thugs. The more this happens, the more the general population views guns as something that only a thug would have, and more gun laws are passed. It perpetuates itself. Does anyone honestly believe that if most law abiding citizens in the United States owned, carried, and knew how to use a gun, the crime rate wouldn’t drop significantly? How many people would be willing to hold up a convenience store if they knew there was a good chance that 80% of the customers in that store were packing and they would have four guns pointed at their heads the minute they pulled out theirs?

The second amendment is there for a reason. Part of that reason is so that citizens can rise up if the government gets tyrranical. A terrible thought, but that‘s what it’s for. Now, if you are a progressive politician and like your tyrranical power over the populace, would you want citizens to have the ability to rise up at some point and throw you out?

Do you notice the children who are killed in shooting accidents in their own homes are kids that have been kept away from guns? The parents lock the guns up or hide them and make a big secret about them. What is more appealing to a child than a secret? My son was introduced to firearms at a very young age and at the age of thirteen he owns two guns. He respects them and does not show off to his friends by playing with them.

It’s true. My husband grew up in Texas and they literally had guns lying around everywhere in their house – right out in the open. The kids knew how to use guns – they shot them all the time – and knew how NOT to use them. They were very strict about gun safety. If anyone ever fooled around with a gun in an unsafe way, their otherwise very mild mannered, happy-go-lucky father would come down on them like a ton of bricks. On the other hand, I know a family who lost their child because another kid, who was unfamiliar with guns – and therefore fascinated by them – stole a gun from a relative’s house, stashed it in his room and took it out one night to show it to his friends. The gun went off accidentally and someone died. It was a terrible tragedy for both families. That would have never happened in my husband’s family, because no one would have thought to “play with” a gun. Guns were for target practice and hunting. They aren’t toys – and after shooting and hunting a few times, and realizing the power a gun has, most kids get this lesson pretty quick.

My seven yr old grandson has proven time and time again that training and exposure does work.

He has found a couple of my handguns laying around (both times when he and his mom showed up unannounced at my home, so I didn’t have chance to put them away before he arrived. I didn’t even know they were coming by) and either told his mom or came and got me to put them away.

He hammers DVD/CDs out to 100 yards already with a Rem Model 5 in .22LR!

We grill him occasionally by asking:

What do you do when you find an unattended gun? (Don’t touch it and go get an adult immediately.)

What do you do when you find an unattended gun and their are other kids around? (make sure they don’t touch and send one of them to get an adult while I stay and make sure none of the other kids touch it.)

What should you consider every gun to be at all times? (loaded and dangerous)

      … among others.

Since he’s been allowed to handle them and observe them in action since he was an infant, they’re not a mystery to him. He understands they’re dangerous. Kids can handle a lot more than we routinely give them credit for.

One very important thing we need to do as gun owner is make sure that the TRUE FACTS get out because all anybody hears from the left stream media is guns ARE BAD and only BAD people have guns so if you want a gun YOU MUST BE A BAD person!!!

What a bunch of CRAP so remember any time you are with family or friends and over hear someone talking wrong information or facts that comes from the left wing media dont sit back and be quiet JUMP IN and set the record straight.

Remember people, all new gun laws are passed by people we elect and if we can get more people informed with the real facts about guns them we can count on them to vote pro gun and call their elected officials and let them know that they are against any new or pending gun laws.

Gun control laws and “gun free” zones do nothing but make victims of law-abiding citizens.

When seconds matter most the cops are only several minutes away.

But, don’t worry, they’ll be able to do a comprehensive investigation and determine exactly what caused your demise so your family can bury you and find “closure.”

I am actually conflicted on this issue. I get the argument that criminals don‘t follow gun laws however the statistics don’t seem to bear that out. States with more guns AND looser gun laws have the MOST per capita deaths. Maybe the answer is that this shouldn’t be a national issue but a state one. Let the local governments decide how guns are managed in their area.

      Uhh, NO!

What is it about, ” … shall not be infringed” you’re having trouble understanding?

The Supreme Court of the U.S. found in Heller v. D.C. in Mar. 2008 that the right to keep and bear arms for self defense is a fundamental, human right which precedes the establishment of government and is PROTECTED by the 2nd Amendment. Then, approx. two years later, in McDonald v. Chicago, the Supreme Court of the U.S. found that the restrictions of the 2nd Amendment apply against the states and local government via the 14th Amendment Incorporation Doctrine and the Due Process Clause.

Therefore, frankly, neither states nor local governments have any authority to infringe upon this fundamental human birthright.

Beware putting any confidence in anything you read or hear from the progressive, anti-american Violence Policy Center )formerly Handgun Control, Inc. if I’m not mistaken.)

Go to the Centers for Desease Control and checkout their stats which show clearly that areas with highest gun control have highest violent crime rates, including with firearms, and those with the most leinent gun laws have less crime. It’s undeniable for those who are pushing an agenda.

The only thing that works is crimminal control, I never leave the house without a gun, and you ask what am I afraid of, I say NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING, I go where I want and fear no one, 30 years ago in basic training they though I was a hell of a shot, you should see me now..

I worked there 25 years ago and it was crime ridden, I can’t imagine what it is today. Last time I was there (about 10 years ago), I thought I was transported into a third world country.

The only reason the city exists at all is that a bunch of folks that work in New York City own high priced, high security townhouses and condos. That is so they can take the PATH (train) into the city or drive in through the Holland Tunnel.

I’m sure more aggressive gun laws are the answer since the criminals buy guns, register them and abide by the waiting period before shooting their victims. Oh the logic of the left!

No permits necessary in the Great State of Arizona. You can carry concealed or openly, personally, I love to carry my side arm openly as this always drives the Californians crazy.

This story is just fluff and fill to help hide the REAL story. What should be the main story all over the media as well as the internet? The headline should read “ TWO KILLED IN TERRORIST ATTACK AS NEW YORK CITY HELD HOSTAGE”

These are only the first deaths in a terror war that public sector UNIONS will wage on America. When public employees join unions and do work slow downs, strikes, conduct campaigns of threats and intimidation of elected officials and in many cases buy politicians, they are attacking “WE THE PEOPLE”. They are committing acts of TERRORISAM.

Their target is not a CEO in some ivory tower. Their target is the single mother working hard to make a living, their target is the elderly and handicapped. Their target is the new born baby who will die because streets are left unplowed in work slow downs.

The real terrorist we need to be concerned with are the ones employed as UNION members in our own government. They hold more power then even the President of the United States. They will demand their interest are placed above all other Americans and will conduct many more terrorist attacks if they are not.

The public good should be forefront in all areas but that has been replaced by corrupt politicians who got bought by UNIONS. Politicians turn their back on those they were elected to serve each time they signed lucrative contracts with Unions giving pay and benefit packages taxpayers could never afford. The damage is real and the ability to recover is almost gone.

We MUST de-certify ALL government sector employee unions. The contracts they have with local, state, and federal governments must voided. Stop the UNION TAKEOVER OF AMERICA. Even FDR knew that when government employees become members of unions that the public will be the ones to suffer from typical union tactics. He banned them from federal government. A Progressive like LBJ was the one who opened the door and allowed them to slowly take over the controls of the systems in government. The UNIONS now have control of your tax dollars and will use them against you. We The People are being forced to fund the union war being waged on us.

May God Help America in these days of deep and dark trouble we brought upon ourselves.

      @Cemoto

Agreed, here in AZ it is great, not many worries about those nasty repeat offenders for armed robbery for most of them join the rest in the paupers fields. Some morons never seem to get the idea that if you are armed, and so are others who have been trained in the law and how to use the guns in the first place, we are safer indeed.

      @Grandmaof5

Good morning, slightly warmer here today in AZ, actually hit 36 degrees a little bit ago. May hit a high of 60 according to the radio.

Thought you would find this a bit humorous, for my morning tea (cinnamon spice today) I accidently put the salt and pepper into it instead of the usual sugar mix. I imagine the look on my face would have been worth a picture or two.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, old guy, I always carry mine in my purse here in Texas! Why don’t libs look at the difference between the 30+ states with concealed carry, and those without; i.e., the lack of crimes in the CW states vs. the ones with restrictive gun laws?

If the libs have their way we will have to stand on the border with food stamps and job offers for the illegal aliens, forget 1070 we will have to let them stay at our homes till they find a shack of their own. Arizona has the best gun laws in the country and I double dog dare the bad guys to try to do harm to me or mine.

What we should have is CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY all across the United States.

Constitutional carry is the fundamental birthright of every human. It is the right to defend life and property against all threats at any time and to carry weaponry for that purpose, loaded and available for immediate employ in the event of a spontaneous confrontation anytime and anywhere.

We have the right without doubt.

Our corrupt and criminal “masters” have usurped authority, violated their oaths to uphold the U.S. Constitution as the supreme law of the land (required by every federal, state and all other levels of government employees, appointees and electees upon taking office by the U.S. Constitution itself) and perverted the law to illegitimately deny those rights to the people they’re supposed to be serving.

The TRUTH and the Second Amendment will set us free again! IF, we the people, can muster the requisite courage to stand up for and enforce our fundamental, human rights.

I know it’s a big IF at the moment. It seems our lax immigration policy has allowed for the watering down of the American spirit over the last hundred years or so.

      We’ll see, I guess.

      Same here in Alabama.

Have not been unarmed in so many years, I cannot remember. Glock 19, with Corbon DPX.
We can carry open here, too – as one can in nearly all states.

****Be sure to train, seek excellent concealed carry training and then train, train and train some more – we have the right, but we also have the responsibility and it‘s been much too long since Grandpa’s and Fathers trained their kids. Not saying it should be a mandatory pre-requirement set in some law, but training should be seen as mandatory by all responsible citizens and something they seek on their own. Remember what Glenn always says, if we do the right things on our own all the time, there will be no need for governments to do it for us. Same goes for gun safes bolted to both the floor and walls – it’s just the right thing to do. We use shooting as a means to draw us together and firearms being so central to American life that practical shooting (run and gun) as well as hunting just about every type of game is a terrific way to stay in shape and spend great time with the family. We focus on long range defensive fires with medium bore calibre weapons (.308) and surplus M61 bullets we reload ourselves (very rare rounds that we were fortunate enough to acquire before Clinton made it illegal to secure them – of course we don’t waste the M61 bullets we have and train with surplus cartridges we buy from many sources – Palmetto, Cheaper Than Dirt, etc…). Into heavier bore bolt action rifles, too and .50 Cal is an amazing round and a great deal of fun to see how accurate we can get at >1000 yds. This is why having your own land, shooting up to higher ground, on a prepared range is so important and if not, that one access a range designed for such distances – there are tons of them in every state, but few that support rifle fires beyond 100 – 200 yds

Any who… please train and often. “On the day, there will be no time and a 200 pound man can close 21 feet in under 2 seconds. This means that one has less time than that to assess the threat, determine it to be lethal and then effectively engage. So all those blackhawk rigs, etc. or any “safety” are useless and wheel guns are too dangerous to carry without an empty chamber under the hammer in the cylinder – hence the Glock without anything other than its trigger safety, and a holster without any thumb-break is the only way to go. Glock’s holster is perfect for this, but again, one has to train like crazy, or in my view, one should not carry at all. I think Gramps would agree and Washington would cringe if he knew a citizen was not “Well Trained” (sorry for the rant, but this stuff is imporant to all of us).

Amen, love Alabama, carry mine on my side everywhere. You have to be a real moron to think that only the criminals having firearms is a good thing. When your not sure who is carrying, you are less likely to pull. A thug won’t go into rob a store if he thinks everyone working and shopping there may be packing. Just common sense. Besides, its our right as Americans and the people in states like Jersey ought to fight a little harder for that right.
