SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea fired artillery barrages onto a South Korean island near their disputed border Tuesday, setting buildings alight and prompting South Korea to return fire and scramble fighter jets. At least one South Korean marine was killed and 13 wounded, the military said.
The skirmish came amid high tension over North Korea’s claim that it has a new uranium enrichment facility and just six weeks after North Korean leader Kim Jong Il unveiled his youngest son Kim Jong Un as his heir apparent.
One South Korean marine was killed, three were seriously wounded and 10 slightly wounded, a Joint Chiefs of Staff official said.
YTN TV said several houses were on fire and shells were still falling on Yeonpyeong island, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) west of the coast. The station broadcast pictures of thick columns of black smoke rising from the island, which has a population of 1,200 to 1,300.
Can we somehow take all these damn TSA machines and make a force field around America. We need to close our borders and get our house clean and I mean fast. Im not worried about me , Im worried about our troops in 2 convenient places. 2 nukes and we have no Military abroad … and why havent we heard any thing else about those West coast plane| missles. Folks I dont think wed be nuked, maybe EMP to put us back to the stone age and then reconstitute our resources. It will look a lot like Afghanistan actually. The same military tactics will be employed, I always felt, the thing in Afghanistan was just the perfect place to train and asses the effectiveness of urban control and seizure.
I keep thinking I’ll wake up to see N. Korea swarming across the border into S. Korea. At the same time China swarms over Taiwan and fires a few warning shots to keep Japan in line. At the same time Iran swarms over Iraq, fires nukes into Israel & Afganistan. At the same time Muslim insurgents embedded in England, France, & Germany start numerous attacks. In the USA a similar insurgency includes millions of illegal aliens, Muslims, and sleeper cell terrorists from all over the world. Our troops are isolated and abandoned all over the world. Sweet dreams.
This is an example of a stupid man attempting to get attention, when he gets attention via a full scale reprisial, these morons will blame everyone but themselves. I sorry to say, I would even hold the civilian populace to task, even with the violent control used by their government.
this is what happens when you don’t fight wars to win them. north korea needs to be cut off from the rest of the world. a TOTAL embargo – NOTHING in – or out.
after one month, start dropping bombs on every major city in north korea after destroying their nuclear facilities. if china doesn’t like it – stop importing anything from china too. it will hurt in the short term, but help in the long term that the world will finally see we won’t tolerate these kinds of actions.

(And an invitation for a burger and beer)

Anyone know the brand OB smokes?
This kind of stuff happens when the President is preceived to be a liberal wimp with nothing in his sack. They know what we know, God help our friend and ally S. Korea, because this administration won’t.
Guys, come on the problem with this world is these little kids going thru our airports with no shirt on. Not some maniac across the globe. What a pathetic fool BHO is.
Can you imagine being POTUS and having 60 years of armistice deteriorate because you are such a weak and pathetic individual that an enemy decides the most powerful nation in the world, leader is a PUNK! P U N K A Z Z is what Kim JongIll is calling Obama right now!
I agree with one thing, Oldsoldier (thank you for your service by the way), Obama has shown a weakness to the world. He has apologized for American time and time again as well as shown himself unable to make quick decisions in the face of a problem (Gulf Oil Spill, more troops to Afghanistan). His charm failed in Copenhagen as it also failed to obtain the Olympic Games for Chicago (not to mention his recent trip to the G12). I also believe his perceived weakness emboldens our enemies and that N. Korea as well as Iran continue with their arrogant stance because they feel Obama will not want to offend his liberal base by getting tough. Obama campaigned on changing the world view of America and unfortunately he accomplished just that.
POTUS has no concept of what he lets deteriorate- he’s a fool in a suit. He should send the N/S Koreans some of his “courageous restraint” medals, that’ll do the trick.
The U S is still the number one military force in the world. Mutually assured destruction remains an obvious result IF cooler military minds and government agencies lose their way.
Pray for peace, but if war should arrive, unleash the US dogs of war, and do what General Sherman and Patton did, win it. Then also do what President Truman did as well.
i agree blue eyes, they’ve been telling us “there will be an incident” all they’re looking for is a catalyst.
what with the tsa groping backlash, the federalies are losing ground with their agenda. “gotta figure out a way to make it stick”.
Back in the 70’s a group of former Vietnam vets, and WWII vets were talking at a get together, when one vet ask a question, who and where will the next great war start? At the time we were enemies with the former Soviet Union now Russia, so you would have thought Russia right? The over whelming answer was North Korea.
And with the person we have as President now, The north thinks and knows they can do anything and get by with it
It is time for us to insist on impeachment of the entire Obama administration. We may not have time to wait until 2012 to vote him out and he has taken us from a Superpower to a paper pussycat already. This should be one of our top issues as the New Congress is seated. I would say that his entire administrations actions taken as a whole add up to a strong case of Treason.
@missionarydad
that will never happen. and if an impeachement actually went through it would be like clinton’s. and what did that achieve? it strengthened the democrat party. Plus do you really want biden to step in? Just hold off till 2012.
The only reason North Korea exists is because China allows it. If North Korea went to war without help from China its army would starve to death in 30 days. The Marxists and radical Islam want the same thing, the collapse of the United States. Death by a thousand cuts, this is another cut. They think they have the odds on their side. There is only one time in history where a free people took on tyranny against overwhelming odds, the Revolutionary War. We Won!!!!
One thing I forgot to add about the smoke. The smoke will provide cover to accelerate the fundamental transformation of America. I’m sure North Korea and China are on board with the plan too.
I had the same thought – smokescreen. The timing is just too coincidental to be ignored, like Snow alluded to. Now we’ve REALLY got to watch the other hand.
They mentioned taking away our nukes… I say we drop one over there and say, “Do you really wanna play with this??” then just end it. One nuke, one crater, zero pig-dictator and it would set back N. Korea for decades.
Obama will form a committee to look into it then take it then let the north Korea review it then take it to the UN so they can form there own investigation and then review it in general assembly they hold every 2 years then north Korea will deny it so they will start all over. Just like the torpedo of the south Korea ship.
How was “Bush right?” By labeling NKorea as a country run by nutters?
Guess what. Everybody already knows that. Bush 43, like everyone who proceeded him, did nothing to solve that problem. He, in fact, by failing to limit our military commitments and not finishing the national task of stamping out the Taliban, weakened our ability to respond to other eventualities such as are now being playing out.
This is going to lead to the next World War. The world is burning, and all we care about is base entertainment. With eyes we don’t see, and with ears we don’t hear. God help us.
Obama will just give S Korea to the North friends of his if they decide to invade; he has already shown he will not do anything and most likely would sacrifice our troops over there for his own crack down here at home.
Why don’t you go bother another site, like the NRA or the Christian sites? They’ll pray for you.
That said, this is what happens every time we have a weakling at the helm, every time America appears weakened. With Carter it was Iran, and after the utter failure of oblahblah’s trip to So. Korea recently, who is surprised?
Yes indeed, is this not what the UN did just a few years ago as well? Just sent a ‘stern’ letter of ‘naughty boy’?

Wonder who has ordered the news agencies to quiet up about the whole matter? (Note add any level of sarcasm to the last line.)
Also, if anyone wishes to press for direct military confrontation with N Korea, while very desirable, and I would agree with it if it could be made to work; consider the big 800-ton gorilla just to the north of the Yalu river that could intervein without all that many of problems.

And when this turns ugly will it be the 50′s all over again or can we actually crush the bad guys? I’m so sick of police actions. Declare war for god sakes and fight it like it is one. You are wrong. he will respond, unfortunately for Korea, it will take him three months to decide to send an ineffectual, unprepared, and ill-equipped force.
Withdraw all US Forces from South Korea; it’s not our responsibility to protect them. Let the chips fall where they may. Use stealth bombers and cruise missiles to keep these crazies in line.
What really puzzles me is, where is our commander in chief. you would think a commander would come out publicly with this kinda of event and assure the American people where we stand in all of this.
George Bush, Ronald Reagan, it would not have taken long to come in front of the American people and lets us know where our commander stands in all of this. we have a stock market falling, missiles being fired off the coast of California, Airports in lock down and we have a punchy President on Air force 1 joking about landing in south America, a Mosque being built at ground zero now asking for government funding. What is the other hand doing !

You are wrong. he will respond, unfortunately for Korea, it will take him three months to decide to send an ineffectual, unprepared, and ill-equipped force.

Posted on November 23, 2010 at 1:15pmWithdraw all US Forces from South Korea; it’s not our responsibility to protect them. Let the chips fall where they may. Use stealth bombers and cruise missiles to keep these crazies in line.

Posted on November 23, 2010 at 2:10pmWhat really puzzles me is, where is our commander in chief. you would think a commander would come out publicly with this kinda of event and assure the American people where we stand in all of this.
Actually i am not puzzled !
