SKorea Scrambles Jets After NKorea Border Attack

(AP) — North Korea fired artillery barrages onto a South Korean island near their disputed border Tuesday, setting buildings alight and prompting South Korea to return fire and scramble fighter jets. At least one South Korean marine was killed and 13 wounded, the military said.

The skirmish came amid high tension over North Korea’s claim that it has a new uranium enrichment facility and just six weeks after North Korean leader Kim Jong Il unveiled his youngest son Kim Jong Un as his heir apparent.

SKorea Scrambles Jets After NKorea Border Attack

One South Korean marine was killed, three were seriously wounded and 10 slightly wounded, a Joint Chiefs of Staff official said.

YTN TV said several houses were on fire and shells were still falling on Yeonpyeong island, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) west of the coast. The station broadcast pictures of thick columns of black smoke rising from the island, which has a population of 1,200 to 1,300.

President Lee Myung-bak ordered officials to "sternly respond" to North Korea's action but also called on officials to make sure that the "situation would not escalate," according to a presidential official. He asked not to be identified, citing the issue's sensitivity.

Lee was holding a security meeting in a presidential situation room, the official said.

SKorea Scrambles Jets After NKorea Border Attack

In a message to North Korea’s armed forces, South Korea’s military urged the North to stop provocations and warned of strong measures unless the North stopped, another Joint Chiefs of Staff official said.

The JCS official said dozens of rounds of artillery landed on the island and in the sea. The official said South Korea fired back. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of JCS rules, said South Korea’s military is on alert. He could not confirm the reports of casualties.

Tensions between the two Koreas have remained high since the sinking in March of a South Korean warship in which 46 sailors died. Seoul blamed a North Korean torpedo, while Pyongyang has denied any responsibility.

North Korea’s actions “are illegal and a violation of the 1953 armistice agreement” that ended the Korean War, the JCS official said.

South Korea responded by firing K-9 155mm self-propelled howitzer, but the JCS official declined to say whether North Korean territory was hit by the South Korean artillery.

JCS said island residents are escaping to about 20 shelters in the island.

Can we somehow take all these damn TSA machines and make a force field around America. We need to close our borders and get our house clean and I mean fast. Im not worried about me , Im worried about our troops in 2 convenient places. 2 nukes and we have no Military abroad … and why havent we heard any thing else about those West coast plane| missles. Folks I dont think wed be nuked, maybe EMP to put us back to the stone age and then reconstitute our resources. It will look a lot like Afghanistan actually. The same military tactics will be employed, I always felt, the thing in Afghanistan was just the perfect place to train and asses the effectiveness of urban control and seizure.

I keep thinking I’ll wake up to see N. Korea swarming across the border into S. Korea. At the same time China swarms over Taiwan and fires a few warning shots to keep Japan in line. At the same time Iran swarms over Iraq, fires nukes into Israel & Afganistan. At the same time Muslim insurgents embedded in England, France, & Germany start numerous attacks. In the USA a similar insurgency includes millions of illegal aliens, Muslims, and sleeper cell terrorists from all over the world. Our troops are isolated and abandoned all over the world. Sweet dreams.

this is what happens when you don’t fight wars to win them. north korea needs to be cut off from the rest of the world. a TOTAL embargo – NOTHING in – or out.

after one month, start dropping bombs on every major city in north korea after destroying their nuclear facilities. if china doesn’t like it – stop importing anything from china too. it will hurt in the short term, but help in the long term that the world will finally see we won’t tolerate these kinds of actions.

wait… that’s not politically correct now, is it?

I agree with one thing, Oldsoldier (thank you for your service by the way), Obama has shown a weakness to the world. He has apologized for American time and time again as well as shown himself unable to make quick decisions in the face of a problem (Gulf Oil Spill, more troops to Afghanistan). His charm failed in Copenhagen as it also failed to obtain the Olympic Games for Chicago (not to mention his recent trip to the G12). I also believe his perceived weakness emboldens our enemies and that N. Korea as well as Iran continue with their arrogant stance because they feel Obama will not want to offend his liberal base by getting tough. Obama campaigned on changing the world view of America and unfortunately he accomplished just that.

At the time we were enemies with the former Soviet Union now Russia, so you would have thought Russia right? The over whelming answer was North Korea.

The Marxists and radical Islam want the same thing, the collapse of the United States. Death by a thousand cuts, this is another cut. They think they have the odds on their side. Guess what. Everybody already knows that. Bush 43, like everyone who proceeded him, did nothing to solve that problem. George Bush, Ronald Reagan, it would not have taken long to come in front of the American people and lets us know where our commander stands in all of this. we have a stock market falling, missiles being fired off the coast of California, Airports in lock down and we have a punchy President on Air force 1 joking about landing in south America, a Mosque being built at ground zero now asking for government funding.
