‘No End in Sight’: Malicious Web Attack Hits Million+ Sites, Still Spreading

A massive attack that’s trying to scare computer users into visiting a bogus antivirus site has infected more than 1.5 million websites and continues to spread, according to an Internet security firm.
Several pages on Apple’s iTunes store have been infected.
The so-called LizaMoon “SQL injection attack” began Tuesday and is being tracked by Websense. Such attacks redirect users by exploiting programming errors and poorly written code and scripts.
eWeek says the attack is “out of control … with no end in sight.” Nearly half the compromised sites are in the United States. Other affected countries include United Kingdom, Kuwait, India, Australia, Turkey, Brazil, Israel, Mexico, Taiwan and Chile.
VentureBeat writes that the attack “shows that malware is a bigger menace than ever and that many web sites aren’t protected.”
All Things Digital explains what the hack does:
The hack seeks to trick Web users into believing that their computer has been compromised by viruses and prompts them to download fake security software that itself causes further problems. Among the sites serving up the links to the fake software sites are some belonging to Apple and used on its iTunes store, though Apple is said to have cleaned up the affected code on its site.
Websense says that so far it appears that sites using Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005 are at risk, though as yet SQL Server 2008 doesn’t appear to be affected. No word yet from Microsoft about any of this, though I’ve asked them for a comment.
Microsoft did end up commenting:
Microsoft is aware of reports of an ongoing SQL injection attack. Our investigation has determined these sites were exploited using a vulnerability in certain third-party content management systems. This is not a Microsoft vulnerability
Via Computer Weekly is a video explaining the LizaMoon injection:

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 11:07pmI seriously don’t think this is anything so sinister as what many are making it out to be. It’s April Fools Day, and I can think of plenty of people that would think of something like this as a prank. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was someone from 4chan since people from that website tend to be pretty good at codes and scripting and stuff.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 10:59pmThis hit me a couple days ago. Completely took over my system. Could not use task manager, ctl+alt+delete, or system recover. It looks like a real anti-virus program but…it’s evil! If it hits you, don’t click on it. Restart in safe mode and run anti-malware (like malwarebytes free). Here’s a good article about it. It shows what it looks like and how to get rid of it.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 10:09pmWhat Microsoft is saying is that MS SQL is not the culprit but cms or content management system websites that use MS SQL as the database management but have their own website protocol is the problem. There are open source databases like mysql that are 100% free and CMS website software (Joomla) Drupal, wordpress and others that are also 100% free and are secure!

Report Post »mefree
Posted on April 1, 2011 at 10:19pmAgain, do you really think that an open source (all source code exposed, therefore far easier to find vulnerabilities) application is more ‘secure’? This is total folly. What has marketshare (MS SQL) is always a target. This is simple. MS SQL 2008 has far tighter security requirements than 2005 and 2003. Therefore it requires that devs who write the CMS software get their crap together and don’t have junk code. MS SQL 2005/2003 would not be vulnerable through this attack via the CMS IF things were setup properly. You can have a great vault door, but if you forget to close it, guess what?
I am just sick of people promoting the falsehood that ‘free’ (open source) apps are ‘more’ secure. It is total folly. If by some miracle these socialist applications gained majority marketshare (which they won’t because we still live in a somewhat capitalist society) then they would be getting hacked left and right. No one bothers because no one uses them.

Posted on April 2, 2011 at 8:34amActually mysql was purchased by “Sun Micro” for 1 billion in 2008.. It is still open source.. They also offer a FREE program called Open Office which for the price (FREE), is a real viable alternative to MS office.. I use both mysql and Open Office. Now if only there were a Linux os that could compete with Windows.. Well Ubuntu is close..if there was seamless windows program support without using “wine” I think it would be a winner. In Fact the Mac OS is Unix/Linux based if I’m not mistaken. Also Free does not mean free support. In many cases the software is free and getting add-on’s and support is not!! I don’t believe that open source is communist or socialist.. There are many brilliant people who do not have the means or the want to be enslaved contractually to a company like Microsoft. Or there may be a brilliant newcomer that is looking to land a great job and can get his work exposed to the world by offering his work for free and make money on support, mods and applications. I believe competition is key, Microsoft wants a monopoly, has it and wants to keep it. (Watch what the other hand is doing with government control).
Report Post »mefree
Posted on April 2, 2011 at 6:39pmHi Endgamer, I recall when Kmart was considered a ‘monopoly’ and a threat, and they got destroyed by the next great company Walmart. A truly free market will not stand for a monopoly, so obviously you don’t believe in true free market principles if you are going to go on an anti-microsoft monopoly rant. Here is my point, charging for ‘support’ is the lamest business model I have ever heard of and it a ‘bubble’ in and of itself. It people don‘t want to be a ’slave’ to Microsoft then they should start their own company and make a product so good that the free market will choose it over Microsoft. (And by choose, I mean pay.) I gurantee you that eventually someone out there will eventually beat Microsoft at their own game, but it won’t be a socialist open source project that does it.

Posted on April 2, 2011 at 12:41amActually this type of trojan infection comes from mmany malware sources, each one a little different but just as annoying and potentially damaging.
Report Post »They have been prevelant for a little over 3 years. Sometimes you don‘t even need to click on anything for the first stage to begin it’s infective beginnings.
The fix is usually simple, but time consumming.
What I have don’t, starting about 3 years ago for family and friends, is to download a free dos program called rkill.com. this first program stops any malware dead in it’s tracks, even as it is loading it’s fake processes. The next thing I use is malwarebytes, which is a free malware detection program that finds the guilty files and isolates or eliminates them (the data base for malwarebytes is updated several times a day…for free…but you have to do it manually). After that is finished, just run your normal anti-virus software to cleanup any possible artifacts. I recommend keeping malwarebytes running all the time. It has caught infections several times when my anti-virus did not.
This way you don’t need to reformat your drive and reload everything from scratch (what a time consuming pain).
So again…rkill.com (free) and malwarebytes (free). Easy as that!

Report Post »Sounds like we should call it the “Democrat” virus…
First it creates a huge problem and then it tells you that it’s the only one that can fix it!
It’s only purpose in life is to sustain itself – no matter how much damage it causes or what the cost.

Report Post »Your understanding of the amazing spiritual and economic potential of American liberty is no better than the understanding of chemistry (in re exhaust fumes) you showed in a recent post elsewhere. You libs are not analytical at all and you obviously don’t read any source material such as a chemistry book or the Constitution or the arguments supporting the latter in the Federalist Papers. If you weren’t so hell-bent on destroying the most innovative and productive nation in the world your ignorance would be laughable!

It is obvious that you do not watch Glenn Beck of if you have watched his show or heard his radio show, you have not “listened” to them. Perhaps, if you were as opened minded as most liberals claim that they are, you might understand that Glenn does stand for something beyond just being “against” President Obama. Being a Pagan, I find that Glenn does get a bit preachy, but at least I have no doubt about his sincerity and beliefs. I have done research into what he says, and while a few of his predictions have not been right (yet sadly on some of them) he never discusses anything that he doesn’t have the facts to back his case on or at the very least have the reason he believes what he believes.
Another thing to remember, Glenn, Sean, Rush and the like are all opinion talk show hosts. We tune into them to either listen to their opinion because we are curious, we want hear someone say publicly what we are unable (or un-willing) to say publicly for what ever reason, or, in the case of most liberals, to listen to him to make fun of him because what he says doesn’t fit neatly into our world view.

Posted on April 2, 2011 at 10:58amThis also just shows why its important to have a good anti virus on your PC. I believe this is the same thing that try hitting my computer it made itself look like it was My web browser (Chrome) however when I click on it my actual anti virus automatically detect the threat which allow me to stop any download and do a scan and clean up on my PC.
For anyone who does not have a anti virus program check out AVG anti virus its free and works great!

Report Post »That’s the most asinine post you have made on here. You obviously choose to be ignorant. There have been plenty of discussions on the case of “smaller government” on here. You not only need to read the constitution but WHY the powers of the fed were limited. The concentration of this much power that the fed has now by disregarding the constitutional limits absolutley brings waste and corruption. That’s the “empty” idea the founders had when they put the enumerated powers into that document. And don’t look now, which you obviously don’t, but the federal government is waste and corruption in the highest degree. Your faith in and defense of such a insatiable out of control bureaucracy tells me and other‘s that you aren’t a thinking person.
What part of the government would conservatives shrink? How about everything not listed as an enumerated power? If you want to pay for anything else then get your state to do it like it’s supposed to. What makes you think the federal government is where all problems are supposed to be solved. Do you have any responsibilities? Do you not think you have the capability to solve issues yourself locally or within your state? Do you think the politicians in D.C. are there because they give a crap about this country? It’s about money. Period. Do they live by the laws they pass? Do they send their kids to public schools that they have control over. Are they going to use the same health care system they set up for us? Have they EVER cut back on spending when the income isn’t there? Do they get in trouble when they cheat on their taxes? You name it. The list can go on forever.
Seriously, are you that much of a closed minded tool for corruption? Do you realize the federal spending and waste is at a point to where there can’t be enough taxes raised or wealth confiscated to pay for the spending in Washington?
Your post is a joke. You just lost any credibility you had with that ignorant post. Get off of the right vs left, dem‘s vs repub’s, atheist vs christian, b.s that has been thrown out there to keep you from looking at the real problem. Think. You don’t need royalty set up in D.C. You can’t possibly see that as the way to go.
