‘No Freedom of Speech if You’re a Conservative’: Hank Jr. Gives Glenn a Candid Interview

It was an interview Glenn Beck characterized as one of his best ever.
Hank Williams Jr. isn’t mincing words when it comes to his feud with ESPN. In keeping with his bold and brash style, he joined Beck on radio Wednesday to talk about the fallout from his recent appearance on Fox News, and he was quite candid.
(Related: read The Blaze’s previous coverage of the Hank Jr. controversy)
“This has actually put new life into you, hasn’t it?” Beck asked Williams.
“Oh,” Williams responded in his slow southern drawl, “don’t tread on me or the freedom of speech.”
And apparently country radio hasn’t. According to Williams, his new song “Keep the Change” about the controversy has skyrocketed to number one. “The number one song in this country downloaded and streamed in country radio is ‑‑ is yours truly, and I‘m going to call it the people’s song,” he said.
But besides talking about his new anthem, he also had some words for Fox, which he thinks twisted his words and hinted at a full video coming that could bolster his case:
And by the way, Glenn, the rest of the story, you know, there will be downloads hopefully this afternoon. Ladies and gentlemen of America, we have that whole interview before they started. Please look at it. When they asked me, “Well, what about, you know, the presidential race and the politics.” I said, look, let‘s don’t go there. Let‘s talk about my father’s new box set. Yet I can’t wait, you know. In the words of Sean Hannity last night, I’d hate to be Fox and Friends right now. Just judge it for yourself. Don’t go there. And like you said, an analogy?
“There is no freedom of speech if you’re a conservative,” he added.
“This is my favorite interview maybe of all time,” Glenn concluded. See why below (Editor’s note: the video below does have a pause near the beginning — we are working on getting a better version):

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 1:26pmConservatives are being shut up all over the country. And I hear Conservatives all around me complaining about the propaganda in the mainstream media.
There is unbelievably biased propaganda in the media.
But don’t complain if you still subscribe to cable or satellite TV. If you do, you are a hypocrite contributing to making those who trash your values day in and day millionaires.
We have the power to launch one of the greatest, most peaceful, easy, free, non-time-consuming revolutions ever in this country: just cancel your freaking cable or satellite subscription.
And then witness the panic in the media world!
But nooooo… gotta have that stupid reality TV show or that repetitive football game whenever I want.
In the end, Conservatives are really weak. ESPN knew they could do what they did to Williams without consequences. They knew Conservatives were way too weak to ever do anything about it.
On the other side they will fight to the death. Just ask Beck. Leftists went after him for almost a year to force Fox News to let him go.
Conservatives are weak and liberals are extremely dedicated. That‘s why they’ve been winning battle after battle for the last 30 years. And that’s why today your country is completely unrecognizable!

WHat I find funny is that whenever anyone talks about the separation of Church and State, Blazers jump around and quote the first amendment’s “Congress shall make no law…” phrase. See! Congress is not making a law!
Meanwhile, when a conservative is fired by a private corporation that make the decision that they don’t want to be associated with that person, then it’s all “free speech!,“ ”free speech!!”
I got news for you bubba. Both clauses are under the “Congress shall make no law” phrase. You can’t have one without the other.

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 1:33pmYou hear that sometimes: “conservatives don’t have freedom of speach.” I have trouble following that given that you have Limbaugh and Hannity and Glenn and a half dozen other conservatives talking on the radio or TV for four hours a day. And of course FOX is 24/7 conservative talk radio, only on TV.
I think when you hear that it’s when conservatives say something that are so controversial or offensive, that their advertisers, or those that pay them, decide the can no longer be associated with the person and still mantain their image with customers. Then the advertisors refuse to advertise on their shows, take their shows off the radio, or terminate the person’s employment.
That hasn’t nothing to do with freedom of speach (which prohibits the government from limiting what you can say) and everything to say about good old fashioned capitalism.

My question to you is who is calling the shots at ESPN? The answer is simply. The same Tribe that is calling the shots at ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, Disney, and yes even FOX News. That’s the reason that our country has been turned into one big Marxist pile execrement!
Now it would only take a few hours to verify my comments and if they are true what does it imply? If they are not true then I’m just a liar.. But if true what does it mean? Who is molding poplular and public opinion in America and at what costs to society?
How many are dilligent and intelligent enough to actually do the research? Now it is true that some our Media has changed hands in the past few years but it is completely symbolic. Be dilligent and see who has been calling the shots over the past few decades and you will begin to understand.

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 4:48pmIt was total Bull when they said Hank was comparing Obama to Hitler. Clearly his statement was comparing to political adversaries in the US to two mortal enemies. It was not a great comparison, but in no way did he call Obama Hitler.
However, this whole freedom of speech hoopla is an even bigger load of bull. No one’s impinged his right to speak his mind. He’s had an even greater forum than usual because of this. That’s right, his freedom of speech has increased. I‘ve never lessened to five words out of his mouth before that wasn’t directly before a football game, but I’ve heard him pontificate now for days.
If this is what it took for Hank to wake up, then great – welcome. But the “woe is me, it’s not fair“ line wears just as thin out of the mouth of a ”conservative” as it does out of any entitlement addicted socialist lapdog.

You seem to think that the increase in numbers between the Buccaneers V. Colts game (11,000 approx) viewers and the HUGE RIVALRY between Lions (currently 5-0, first time since 1954) V. Chicago Bears (2-3 now after losing to the Lions) is in response to Hank Williams Jr. being pulled off for making an analogy about Obama and Boehnor playing golf being as ridiculous as Hitler and the president of a Jewish Nation playing golf? How about the fact that EVERYONE knows the Colts are done this season due to Manning’s neck injury so really who cares to waist time they could be doing a million other things to watch that game? Now the Lions, Bears game of course people are going to watch….next week doesn’t look like much of a game so I wonder if the number will be less than 17K (approximate) who watched this week? If that is the case can I then justify saying, “See they pulled Hank Jr. off the air and now the people are speaking!”

You hate it when an American dares to speak out against the ills of this country, you hate it when an American stands up against a government that is running rough shod over our freedoms. The reason you hear the complaint that “conservatives don’t have free speech” is because when liberals argue their case, conservatives respond by attempting to prove them wrong with facts (not all conservatives, but most). But when a conservative argues his/her case, liberals respond with ad hominem attacks and calls for boycotts.
It may not be the government that is limiting conservative free speech… yet. But the reality is that we conservatives try to engage liberal arguments, while liberals just try to shut us up. And if they can’t do that by shouting us down or slandering us, they try to take us down with boycotts. So there is no free exchange of ideas with liberals. And if the liberals ever pass reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, then it won’t be long before conservative free speech really dies.

You all made a big deal about “never watching ESPN again” becaues they “infringed on Hank’s 1st amendment rights.” I have been saying that it has nothing to do with 1st amendment rights, ESPN made a decsion that they didn’t want Hank representing them anymore. Thats all. It has nothing to with the 1st amendment, this is a free market issue. and American didn’t care about your calls to boycott ESPN becaues the ratings were still very strong. Like they are every week. So the public as spoken, and it is clear that nobody cares.
and yes… Hanks song selling well is a sign that they free market speaking as well. Obama is not very popular and that is an anti-Obama song by a major country star. Of course it is going to sell well. I don’t know what point your trying to make?

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 1:07pmThat’s bull! Threatening someone’s livelihood because of their opinion is the worst form of censorship.
And by the way, where does it stop?
What if you say something – ANYTHING – that your employer doesn’t like and he fires you over it? How would you feel about it?
What if I’m your boss and I like a certain sports team and you make fun of them in front of me? I can fire you over that since the line of reasoning from people like you is that you can say anything but be willing to accept the consequences.
People like you say ESPN also has free speech so they can get rid of Williams because they don’t agree with certain things he said… Ok, what if I am a business and I refuse to sell you my services because I don‘t agree with what your religious beliefs are or I don’t like the way you look?
Anyway, once again, threatening someone’s livelihood (at least Williams has different options; many of us don’t) is the WORST form of censorship.
What a pathetic excuse to say that at least you don’t go to prison… tell that to somebody who sees his/her life completely destroyed after losing a job…

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 12:43pmI’ve noticed the same. I have watched FNC since its inception and today’s reports are a joke compared to what Fox was then. The biggest change, I believe, is in Bill O’Reilly…he’s moved to the center on most issues in what appears to be a way to present himself as more fair and balanced. In my opinion, he just wants the big interviews and appeases the left to get them. Hannity is probably the least affected by this new centrist trend at Fox. If I wanted to watch center left news, I’d watch CNN.

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 12:45pm@Smith: when you use an analogy, you aren’t just establishing a relationship between two things, but the degree of relationship. To make an analogy between Hitler (one of the most evil people to ever live) and Netanyahu (someone most of you see as a hero), is to draw the same relationship between Obama and Boehner. It‘s not that they’re just opposites, it’s that one is evil, and one is good. Lastly, knowing that, it is unlikely that Williams would call Boehner evil, so there you have it.
As for calling Obama the enemy, there’s been a lot og hyperbolic speech on both sides. Even Obama isn’t above it. I am a liberal, but I would agree that calling Obama “the enemy” isn’t anti-American, because you have the right to think and say what you feel.

Take the same “bias” double-standard, and ask yourself…700 arrested in OWS and 0 at Tea Party rallies…but the TEA PARTY is the “violent” group? Numerous blatant anti-semetic/Jewish posters/comments, on VIDEO, none on Tea Party rallies, and the TEA PARTY is RACIST? Hmmmm, is this the “ministry of truth” or the “media”?
Report Post »MAProg
Posted on October 12, 2011 at 12:57pmYou’re kidding, right? Conservatives have an army of talking heads who’s sole job it is to smear the left, and call them names. To claim that liberals enjoy some sort of exemption from insult is ignoring the facts.
Having said that, there is an issue of degrees. If you go on live television and draw an analogy that can be interpreted as comparing the President to Hitler, then you’re going to be held accountable. Glenn can make all the Nazi comparisons on his show that he wants, but when you’re not in a hyper-partisan setting like that, you’re going to be held to those words.
As for your other points: multiple arrests in a group doesn’t mean that the group is violent. It could mean that they are being systematically tageted by the police. It could mean that they are unlawful but not necessarily violent. It could mean a lot of things.
Lastly, finding a few ignorant anti-Semites among a crowd of thousands doesn’t a movement define. You got some of them on tape, that’s fine, but you‘re going to sit there and tell me that there aren’t ANY racists in the Tea Party? Just because there’s no video if it occurring?

Posted on October 12, 2011 at 3:44pmOh please, you know how you can tell when someone really doesn’t have freedom of speech? They’re afraid to tell you they don’t have freedom of speech and look nervous that you even asked. As of yesterday, Hank Williams Jr. was still appearing on tv shows seen by millions of people. The rest of us should wish for such a lack of freedom of speech.
But you don’t have complete freedom of speech in the realm of business and commerce, none of us do. Whenever you accept any form of employment it comes with a couple of restrictions so basic and universally understood that they are enforceable even if unwritten – you don’t insult the boss, and you don’t insult the customers. Hank insulted the customers People who voted for Obama watch football too. When you call him “the enemy” you imply that we are traitorous.
And don’t even try to claim that it’s normal to think of the opposing party as the enemy. It’s not. It’s normal to think of them as the opposition, and it’s normal to meet with them frequently without anyone thinking that’s a bad thing.
