Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi’s unborn son or daughter is going to have one amazing “fun fact” to share about themselves someday.
The 29-year-old Malaysian shooter will be competing in this summer’s London Olympics — and she’ll be eight months pregnant at the time.
“I will talk to the baby before I compete…’no kicking, stay calm for one hour and 15 minutes only please,’” Suryani told Reuters.
Even though she’ll be 33 weeks along when she heads to London in July, her doctors have given the tentative OK.
“My aim is to compete,” she said. “Maybe, at the end of June or whatsoever, if I have some problem that would jeopardize the baby inside me, I will reconsider whether I am going or not. But I feel I am strong and my husband says ‘as long as you feel like that, energized to do that, it seems like that is your baby talking to you so you go.’”
According to Yahoo Sports, Suryani qualified for the Games at the Asian Shooting Championships in January, just days after finding out she was pregnant.
Still, her pregnancy will come with a few concessions: She said she‘ll probably skip the closing ceremonies since it won’t be advisable for her to fly by that time, and she’ll only be competing in the 10-meter air rifle event — not the 50-meter competition for which she also qualified.
“Yeah, I cannot do a prone position with this big stomach,” she said.
According to Reuters, she got her start in the sport when she was 15 years old and her dad took her to the shooting range for the first time.
“I like a rough job like that, not something girlie or feminine, I don’t like those types of sports so I tried and its been OK,” she said..

Posted on April 16, 2012 at 2:09amI wonder what type of shooting she’s doing. If it’s 3P like I used to compete in then man it would be interesting to see how she does off-hand. Btw, for those of you wondering, it’s a .22 aka small bore. I’ve had the pleasure of shooting one of those, beautiful rifles.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 7:59pmI think the Olympics should be for athetes who exert energy and are physically fit. There are so many non-athetic events in the Olympics now. It takes away from the real athletes. If grandma can kind of do it, then it shouldn’t be considered an Olympic sport.
Report Post »I understand that it takes skills. They just need to have their own world event, not an athletic one.

Report Post »Shooting sports have been part of the modern Olympics since the
begining. In fact, the first medals in every Olympics are for shooting!

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 10:08amas well as i remember the olympics started as a display of military skills, so shooting should be right up there near the top. the silly stuff would be stuff like ice dancing that there is really no way to even judge fairly. it all depends on how much the judges like what you did and how they judge the difficulty of your performance. as far as grandma doing it, if she has skills that would make her a worthy adversary on the battlefield then by all means lets see it. i would applaud her. lets see grandma with a rifle compete against the ice dancing duo and see what happens. i agree with you that there are things in the games that don’t belong but shooting should stay.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 5:32pmI would love to see her shoot. Too bad all the children in England will not get to go due to the phobia of the London crowd not allowing children to attend (guns are scary). It is hard to believe that sacred island for a time stood alone against Hitler.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 10:19pmIf it was the England of today that was standing against Hitler in 1940, they would have fallen in less than 30 days or surrendered without a fight.

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 10:12amAt least London is letting people shoot in the olympics. Usually, the british olympian shooters have to go across the channel to even practice their sport because the UK doesn’t consider guns legal. Which is just another fact that makes me believe that they are all still subjects of a crown and not sovereign individuals with any type of meaningful freedom. But then again, we aren’t far off.

Posted on April 14, 2012 at 6:07pmLooks like and 8002 according to the website, nice unit. I don’t see why she could not be accommodated for her pregnant belly by having a sand pit to shoot from to dig a indent for her belly. It’s what she would have to do in real life to shoot prone.
