Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa warmed up the audience for President Obama in Detroit by declaring a labor war on the Tea Party and Republican legislators.  “President Obama, this is your army, we are ready to march,” Hoffa said. “But everybody here’s got to vote. If we go back, and keep the eye on the prize, let’s take these son of a bitches out.”

Well that kind of comment will get some attention!

But now Hoffa is defending his speech.  Talking Points Memo says, “He’d say the exact same words all over again”:

“I would because I believe it,” he said. “They’ve declared war on us. We didn’t declare war on them, they declared war on us.We’re fighting back. The question is, who started the war?”

The speech came shortly before President Obama took the stage in Detroit — and Hoffa‘s remarks certainly overshadowed Obama’s on Fox. But the Teamsters chief said he was just matching fired-up conservative rhetoric when it comes to organized labor and Obama with some fired-up rhetoric of his own.

You may not be surprised that Media Matters found the Fox News editing of the Hoffa video clip to be deceptive.

Media Matters:

Right-wing bloggers misled by dishonest Fox News video editing are attacking Teamsters President James Hoffa, Jr. for supposedly urging violence against Tea Party activists during a Labor Day speech. Conservatives are also attacking President Obama, who appeared at the event, for “sanctioning violence against fellow Americans” by failing to denounce Hoffa. But fuller context included in other Fox segments makes clear that Hoffa wasn’t calling for violence but was actually urging the crowd to vote out Republican members of Congress.

During the segment that the bloggers have latched onto, Fox edited out the bolded portion of Hoffa’s comments:

HOFFA: Everybody here’s got to vote. If we go back and keep the eye on the prize, let’s take these son of a bitches out and give America back to America where we belong! Thank you very much!

Media Matters, however, does not cite or link to any “right-wing bloggers” who construed Hoffa’s comments as an actual call to violence.  There may be some…but my guess is the vast majority took the comments for exactly what they were — a call to political conquest made in terms rather uncivil.

Talking Points Memo notes the call by one Tea Party group for President Obama to condemn Hoffa’s remarks.

And US editor of the Daily Telegraph raises that point…and adds the issue of Vice President Biden’s comments today painting Republicans as “barbarians”:

I enjoy political hardball as much as the next reporter. It’s barely concealed truth that campaign journalists, like the operatives we cover, love negative campaigning and revel in OTT insults and martial rhetoric. Even candidates often lapse into the language of “rip his throat out”, “tear his eyes out” or “drive a stake through her heart”.

It’s no secret either that many Republicans despise Democrats with a passion and vice versa. Just as British MPs hide their contempt of their opponents by referring to them as “the honourable member’, American politicians have their own, albeit less formal, ways of masking their true feelings with anodyne language for public consumption.

But the statements today by Jimmy Hoffa Jr and Vice President Joe Biden demean the presidency and, tactically speaking, are stupid own goals.

      Obama would like to go all out the same way but understands he cannot in his position. So he stands back and prods. Poke…poke…poke…It really is all they know and they think it is the way business is done. Obama is trying to set up the Republicans with his jobs thing. It will be the same old stuff and when Republicans block it they will be called names and the feigned anger will pour out at the obstructing party…

      Just ignore it folks, America is awake enough. Obama is finished, we do not need to play these games. Just laugh at them and move on.

Obama‘s failure to condemn Hoffa’s rhetoric filled with physical threats against American citizens and his filthy language will BITE HIM ON HIS HINNY on election day.       I worked for America West Airlines years ago when the Teamsters were voted in to represent us. With leadership such as Hoffa, is it any wonder I left America West as fast as I could find another job? The entitlement and us against them attitudes of the aircraft maintenance personnel were starting to develop and I didn’t like what it was doing to my coworkers. I was starting to get caught up in it a little myself; I had to get out of there. I didn’t like what I was becoming.

      As I was growing up I saw how the Steel Worker‘s Union effected my father’s attitudes for a time. He was in an industry and state where he didn’t have to join the union. He really didn’t want to at first, but realized, for his own safety from union member reprisals, he had too.

      The steel plant is now closed due to the high cost of union labor and government legislation requirements. I recently had a short conversation with old steel worker that overheard me talking about how I felt about unions and how they hold too much power. He vehemently interrupted my conversation with his opinion that the steel workers union allowed him to make more money and protected his rights as a laborer. I didn’t want to be confrontational with him and his disruption caught me off guard so we parted ways with no further discussion.

      But later, I realized that I could have made comment that his beloved union took an active part in US Steel closing the plant that kept him and my father so well employed.

      What you say is true. Many people work for a company and use their skills to take raw matierials and transform them into something someone would like to buy. Because you have helped create something someone would like to buy you have added valve to the COMPANY. After your labor the company can sell the product you helped produce and give you a pay check on a regular basis. I assume that pay check is a value to you. If so, then you win and the company wins.

      The Union leadership will just never get it. We aren’t against workers, we’re against people making money off the workers and advancing an agenda that hurts our country. We’re against UNION BOSSES, not the average worker. Sometimes you have no choice to join a union. I worked in a factory, because it was the only job I could find. I HAD to join the union if I wanted to work there. I HAD to give up part of my check in the form of Union dues, it was taken out before I even saw my check “to make it easy for me.” They don‘t give a rat’s a $ $ about the average little guy, just getting their dues.

      This is serious to instigating a riot or violence against a potential tea party rally somewhere. Remember the justice dept did not prosecute Black Panthers that intimidate at the voting stations
      before any went in to vote. Congress at best case should call Obama to the mat and VP Biden should be called to congress and actions for his words should call for censur or best case to ask for
      his resignation. Keep in mind the crowd. It is made of the thugs in the unions bused in plus I am sure
      members of black panthers and acorn. Not long ago they called for protest like the ones in middle east should be held. You have a day of rage scheduled in Washington by the same thugs that just got this rallying cry. Also remember violence escalated in Wisconsin by the thugs. This is not a group of people that are the actual workers out in ranks at job sites. This video should be sent by someone to the justice dept. and congress chairman of homeland security overseer. The justice dept and home land security head Janet N. should be called before congress and ask what they are doing with these threats and they will be held accountable if anything develops.

    We aren’t declaring war on unions. We’re rejecting them. It isn’t war. It isn’t violence. It’s recognizing your obsolescence. You’re threatening to take us out? To kill us? You think we’re terrified?

      Hoffa is now directly promoting the Communist party to Union members. I was hit up last weekend from one. They even had paper flyers “describing” the Tea Party and “asking” “Who is the Communist Party? What do they Do? They seem to have good Ideas for Labor and Union. You should get on-line and check them out.” Of course literal me; I was answering the “QUESTION” with a trip through history and current events not realizing that I was not supposed to have the answer to the “question”.
