‘No Speak English, No Service’: Restaurant Owner Removes Controversial Sign After Bombarded With Threats

For Greg Simons, the owner of the Reedy Creek Family Diner on US 150 in Davidson County, North Carolina, language barriers affect his bottom line. So after some Spanish-speaking customers visited his diner about a month ago, and then left after an uncomfortable situation with the wait staff, Simons decided to put an end to such miscommunications once and for all.

He posted a sign in his restaurant which read, “No Speak English, No Service.” But just yesterday, he was forced to take the sign down after he was bombarded with complaints and threats. Someone even threw a brick through his window, according to The Dispatch, a Davidson County newspaper.

“We started getting threatening phone calls and people using colorful language if you will,” Simons said.

The bottom of the sign read, “We only speak and understand American.” In addition to being translated into Spanish, the phrase “No Speak English, No Service” appeared on the sign in German, French, and Russian. Some have criticized Simons’ sign as discriminatory and racist. But Simons waved that criticism aside, saying that everyone’s money is green.

“It doesn’t really make any sense to me. Why would I want to alienate any customers?” he asked. Simons told The Dispatch, “Nobody here is bilingual. If you can’t tell me what you want, I can’t give you what you need. It’s nothing about race; it’s a language barrier. We don’t speak any Spanish.”

About a month ago, Simons received customers who only spoke Spanish.  ”They got offended because we couldn’t speak any Spanish. They were frustrated. I was frustrated as well and they left. Unfortunately I don‘t have anybody here that’s bilingual,” Simons said. This and others incidents prompted Simons to post the sign. In the past, for instance, customers who only spoke Spanish have sent food back several times due to the wait staff not understanding what the customers had ordered.

Simons took the controversial sign down hoping that he will have no more language-related problems moving forward.

    I’m not sure you can “reserve the right” anymore – unless you are just openly looking for a lawsuit. you can‘t even hire people you don’t want to associate with, regardless of the right of free association. try having a business with no handicap parking – well, you can – but you can’t have a parking lot for anyone else either.

    I think the restaurant went wrong with their sign. it should have read “English only spoken here” not in Spanish, Russian, French or any other language.

    I‘m a firm believer that if they don’t want my money, I won’t go there.

    but in the end – the guy said it like ALL Americans – as long as it’s green – we don’t care how we get it – and you wonder why more than half of the federal government wants to allow illegal immigration.

    How about, “We speak English, To avoid misunderstanding, you do the same!“ or ”If you do not speak English, please ask to visit our kitchen or look around and point to what is on another diner’s table.” or How about a picture-menu card or wax models (as they have in Japan)? Or, keep an (foreign language) to English Dictionary, a Travel Guide with “How to order” section. Or, maybe, “We speak Carolina, if you’re from out of state, we’ll try our best to understand.“ or ”If you can’t speak English, Try our Barbecue!” Or, offer to hire the 1st person they bring in who is bi- or tri-lingual? (I’m gonna get hammered for this one, but you could always ask the dishwasher to come out and interpret!)

    I live in central Florida so I may just be desensitized to this issue but I do not see the big deal. I would not have put up the sign, there is no need. If a customer cannot make his needs known then tough, no service. Even though I speak fairly decent spanish I would just act like I did not understand anything they said just as they do the same thing to english speakers.

      Did you not read that the SPANISH speaking customers were the ones who got upset because the WAIT STAFF did not speak Spanish and did not understand their order? HELLO??? How about they bring a translator since they have now been WARNED by the owner that they can not serve them what they want since they DO NOT UNDERSTAND what they want? You think in France they would get your order correct if you don’t even understand the menu and what you are trying to order? Please. This is not about “discrimination.” It’s about comprehension!

      Did I say anything about discrimination? You made my point, in France the order would have been wrong but the American customer would have been waited on anyway! I am not arguing with you that it was the Mexicans that got upset and walked out! Great! This is…America…after all.

      But a poster above makes a good point: If this is a common problem because of a large Mexican population in town then as a business it would be in my best interest to print a Mexican menu or even hire a bilingual employee. People are all colors but dollars are green.

      I was recently in Tiawan and went to a McDonalds there. Not a lick of english and I cannot even come close to recognize the Chinese symbols. However, I could still order because the menu has pictures. I went to another street restaurant with no english. I could still order because I could point to food that looked good.
      With that said, I think the mexican patrons did not try very hard to communicate their order. Unless of course they were trying to order tacos and the guy does not have any on the menu. The owner could maybe put pictures on the menu (maybe he already does). Language is not really an issue for ordering food. Besides, even if it is wrong, live with it because you are the one that cannot communicate. If you cannot understand me, I cannot force you to understand.

      It is not the Mexican immigrants that are the problem. It is the illegal aliens! They don’t feel that they have to learn english adn everyone has to learn spanish.
      Out sheriff in Alamance county is a firm supporter og the 287g program implemented by the federal government and now the DOJ is investigating his department for allegations of profiling. The local paper released a report from ICE on the results of this program and the county commisioners concluded that the report was good.

      Last month 23 arrested illegals were turned over to ICE. Of this number 14 were repeat offenders (meaning they were given to ICE for deportation). This is what they label as success. We should be investigating the federal government for derilection of duty and make sure heads roll for this utter failure of ICE, border patrol, and DHS all together.
      So to answer your question, yes NC has a lot of illegal aliens.

      There are approximately 300,000 illegals in North Carolina. They steal license plates off of cars. No lie. I was hit by one who drove off. I called the police and gave them the tag number. He was in a Nissan but the tag was to an Oldsmobile. People in the low rent parts of twon keep their tags in the car in the rear window. If you break down on the Interstae your tag will be gone by the time you get back.
      They have no Driver’s Licenses either and no insurance. Many also drive drunk and are only caught after they have killed someone. Another on just this week killed a volunteer swimming instructor who was talking to police on the side of the road helping someone. The Hispanic just drove right into him because he as driving partly in the breakdown lane.

      THey are encoraged to come and stay by Roman Catholic and Methodist churches providing food and shelter as well as ESL classes. They fill up our schools and emergency rooms. Union County next door? One in three residents is Hispanic.
      I think this is a lost cause. I grew up in Miami and what happened there is now happening to our entire country.

      When in France, Spain or Italy I didn’t speak the local language but guess what, I didn’t starve to death because nobody refused to serve me despite my often terrible attempts to communicate what I wanted to order.

      That being said, the guy can refuse service to whoever he wants, it’s his restaurant. But like a sign saying that they’d refuse to serve black people it sure makes him come off as a douche. If it‘s sincere and not meant to insult it sure isn’t phrased that way.

      The question is did you choose to live in France, Italy, or Spain, or did you just visit those countries? Whenever I go to a foreign country I try to learn a basic knowledge of the language to at least get around, or obtain help if needed. I am sure if you chose to live in France indefinately the French would be put off if you chose or even refuse not to learn their language. I immigrated my wife from the Philippines when you LEGALLY immigrate over here YOU are required to learn and speak English. My wife was actually told that if she didn’t have a basic knowledge she would be denied to obtain her 10 year or permanent green card.

      Oh and try to illegally enter Mexico, Russia, or any other Foriegn country and see how they tolerate illegal aliens. Especially Mexico, they want us to tolerate thier illegals but don’t illegally enter their country. Mexican jails are not a picnic and they don’t have the ACLU to create the country club prisons we have here.

      Splitting hairs. You would have to ask the restaurant owner what his ATTITUDE was. What was his meaning in placing the sign? Perhaps it was put there out of frustration. The simple fact is that he could not understand what the ‘customers’ wanted. Period. If he didn’t choose to take steps to bridge that gap, he loses business, and the customers go elsewhere…perhaps to McDonald’s. This man should not be criticized for putting people on notice that he didn’t want to deal with the stress of trying to serve people with whom he could not communicate. If the people were starving, he should have just given them food. They could ‘point’ and eat. Otherwise, with money and transportation…they had alternatives in an assumedly populated area. They could exercise their meal-vote by spending their ‘dinero’ elsewhere. Leave the guy alone. Also, it isn‘t ’racist’ to desire that a nation be bound by a common core language. It is, in fact, likely a necessary thing in order to maintain the integrity of even a fragile, national social fabric. We are not ‘from one, many.’ We are E Pluribus Unum. ‘From many, one.’ At least, we were. If we continue to disintegrate to the point where the people living here within our borders don’t speak the same language…then we shall soon have no more ‘United’ States. And that is where we are heading. It may not be wise to place such a sign. But it is within his right as a businessman and private citizen to do so.

      Back in the 80′s there used to be a couple of restaurants like this in Lubbock Texas. They were in business for about 20 years then out of the blue they started posting these signs, “English Only”.
      It made the local news and before you know it people stopped going to both of them. They both went of business within a year.

      Seems to me that if he had printed his menu in Spanish and English, (like they do in Mexican food restaurants), there would be no problems and he would make more money with more customers.
      It must not be too hard or expensive to do since I see many small Mexican food joints that do it.

      I should get my own TV show and play the part of an arbitrator. I could call it, “Hardly Legal”. As long as I don’t have to be sexy, it would be a hit!

      Why does somebody always have to start with the racist and bigot stuff right away when this was clearly a language problem. He didn’t single out anyone due to race, just language. I just want to know if he was getting the threats in English or some other language?

      True Robert but for this guy to give in to the PC police and threats is terrorism isnt it? Isnt what they are doing to him no different than what terrorists do? To give in is to surrender and that is why the radical leftist machine takes too much “power”. The guy said he was frustrated b/c he lost business b/c his staff didnt speak spanish, no be frustrated that ppl come into this country and choose NOT to speak english.

      ‘The needs of the few or one out weigh the needs of the many’?!?! I dont think Spock would agree as that is illogical! :)

      You come to this country you better speak english its that simple. My family like countless others came to the US, from Italy, at the turn of the century. They learned to read and write in english and they even spoke english at home! The assimilated into the American culture while maintaining family tradition and culture from the old country. It can be done it should be done.

      Somewhere though through the years someone started enabling immigrants and appeasing them if they were unable to communicate to get us to where we are today: “press 1 for english” signs in multiple languages, people that are here a lifetime who cant communicate where their children or grandchildren have to translate! What is that?

      Now we have business owners who have the right to refuse anyone expressing themselves that now get threatened for a right they reserve. I choose who to service period, “you” dont dictate to me how I should conduct my privately owned business. Now threats are thrown into the mix and are given into. I say go ahead threaten me and see what happens. Many of these loons make nothing but idle threats those deemed truly dangerous, 1%, will act and they should be confronted and locked up. Embrace and invoke your 2nd amend rights thats all I can say if it came dow to worst case scenario. Odds are it wont and what you should really arm yourself with are cameras. had he had some type of surveillance set up probably would have caught those responsible forthe brick being thrown. Cameras have proven to do plenty of damage over the years and have become the new “weapon” of the 21st century!

      She then asked me why I had spoken to her in English. I responded: Because It’s the tongued of the land.

      While in South Florida, I spoke to a second person who immigrated to the U.S., about 5 or 6 years ago. He called America: The United Slaves of America.

      These are just two examples of the type of insanity we tolerate on a daily basis in this country.

      That I will do one better, my Brother in-law who is from Mexico and has been here for almost 15years now and still can‘t or won’t speak English once told me that the United States sucks and that he is only here for the money. I told him he is free to leave at time.

      I can definitely see where this guy is coming from and I don’t blame him one bit for putting up that sign. Heck, I probably would have done the same thing. I just think if anyone moves to America they should be required to learn English for reasons just like this. I applaud this guy.

      It’s not a racist sign at all. I mean you can order in Spanish all you want but you are not going to get any service because they wont know what you are ordering because all the employees speak ONLY English. It’s not racist, it’s common sense.

      Now if it WERE a racist sign it would have read, “We don’t serve bean-eaters, wet-backs, greasers, or taco-benders.” See, now THAT’s racist. see the difference? Probably not because the term “racist” has been so watered down that nobody recognizes the legitimate thing when they see it any more.

      Honestly this doesn’t strike me as bigotry on the surface, although you have to wonder when someone is turning down paying customers. Given the guy is in business to make money, you have question his motivations.

      He mostly strikes me as someone, not to bright, who has never left his home town. Even in my home town in the South, I sometime go to restaurants where the people taking your order don’t speak a word of English. You point to the menu item. Hint – if the guy want Mexican customers, he could pay someone $10 bucks to translate the menu items and then print out a translated menu for another $10 or for next to nothing if he has a computer and a printer.

      If you‘ve ever gone to another country you’d find yourself incredibly grateful for someone who was willing point, draw pictures or gesture to accomodate your incomprehension or their language. Americans aren’t loved a lot of places, but at least they know you have the money to pay if they can figure out what it is you want.

      Maybe the guy is just a bigot. Have him contact me, I’ll find someone who will for free translate his menu into Spanish and German (at least) and I’ll print out the menus and send them to him for free.

      The more I think about it, the more I think this guy is just a bigot, given how easy it would be to accomodate Spanish speakers. If he‘s losing customers simply because he doesn’t speak Spanish he is either a) stupid or, b) a bigot.

      The guy has a point. A brick through the window just shows that people can’t handle criticism. On the other hand turning down business is bad especially in these days. Also seeing what our government is doing it may not improve much at all.

      I can understand why he took them down even though I feel that he shouldn’t have removed the sign since by that he is somewhat giving up his right to be in control of his own business. This story actually just shows that these people that have no wish to be a part of this nation and only wish to use the freedoms accorded to us by the Constitution for their own aim to bring the nation down have won another battle (but not the war) and they are doing this with their allies in Congress (the demoncrats) and their allies in the White House (whatever they are in addition to being demoncrats). With God’s help we WILL overcome and make these attacks upon us, our freedoms and goodness, light and TRUTH fail now and forever more!

      @WHITETEAPARTY That‘s a point I’ve made multiple times in the past. I would rather welcome open racism, at least I know where to spend my money. Why help a business of someone that has that mind set, right? Force them to be silent, and we’ll have a plate full of spit, pubic hair, dandruff, what ever they can think of.

      I’m not saying this person is racist. A business owner is making a bad business decision if he is unwilling to take money from other races. He stated in the article he doesn’t care, money in green, that’s all he cares about. It’s a matter of a language barrier. He loses money when neither party understands each other and food is sent back, uneaten and unpaid for.

      The business owner should not be forced to be bi-lingual. If it is a tourist town, where they rely on foreigners for their income and have an influx of them coming in constantly, then bi-lingual is a necessity. Otherwise, the business owner has the right to refuse service to anyone.

It appears that they bark about civility when it comes from white ppl but never expect it from themselves. They just vandalize and make threats. So who’s not civil?

      It is time to make English the Constitutional, official language of the United States. The business owner should not regret not having a bilingual employee. The so-called customer who spoke Spanish only had no business being upset that nobody at the restaurant spoke Spanish. Restaurants are not the U.N. If I were in Mexico City- I would have no business criticizing shop owners who didn’t speak English. Or, if in France, complain about their not speaking my language. TO EVERYONE WHO COMES HERE FOR THE BENEFITS OF AMERICA– LEARN ENGLISH. OR LEAVE.
