Nobel Prize Winner Resigns Over an ‘Incontrovertible’ Stance on Global Warming

Dr. Ivar Giaever, former professor with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the 1973 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics, resigned yesterday as a Fellow from the American Physics Society over its ‘incontrovertible’ position on global warming.

Giaever wrote in an email to APS’s executive director (via Climate Depot):

“In the APS it is ok to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is incontrovertible? The claim (how can you measure the average temperature of the whole earth for a whole year?) is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8 degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely improved in this ‘warming’ period.”

APS’s official position on global warming according to its website states:

The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring.

Because the complexity of the climate makes accurate prediction difficult, the APS urges an enhanced effort to understand the effects of human activity on the Earth’s climate, and to provide the technological options for meeting the climate challenge in the near and longer terms. The APS also urges governments, universities, national laboratories and its membership to support policies and actions that will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

In later commentary on its website to clarify its position, APS writes:

While there are factors driving the natural variability of climate (e.g., volcanoes, solar variability, oceanic oscillations), no known natural mechanisms have been proposed that explain all of the observed warming in the past century. Warming is observed in land-surface temperatures, sea-surface temperatures, and for the last 30 years, lower-atmosphere temperatures measured by satellite.

APS, in it’s commentary, also acknowledges that “the word ”incontrovertible” in the first sentence of the second paragraph of the 2007 APS statement is rarely used in science because by its very nature science questions prevailing ideas.“ The organization calls the evidence for global warming ”compelling” but doesn‘t retract it’s use of the word “incontrovertible.”

Climate Depot goes on to note that Giaever isn’t the only scientist that has resigned from APS over global warming:

Prominent Physicist Hal Lewis Resigns from APS: ‘Climategate was a fraud on a scale I have never seen…Effect on APS position: None. None at all. This is not science’

Giaever was one of 70 Nobel Prize winners to endorse Obama in 2008. But in 2009 he was one of 100 co-signers of a letter to the president questioning his stance on global warming. In 2010, Giaever was quoted by the New York Times as saying global warming “can’t be discussed, just like religion.”

Nobel Prize Winner Ivan Giaever Resigns as Fellow From APS Over Global Warming

Ivan Giaever in 1973.

Giaever won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1973 for his work in electron tunneling and superconductivity.

What the heck happened???? How in the world can Gore and Obama be in the same catagory as this Brilliant man???? They Can’t. The Nobel Prize has become like all the “Trophy’s” they give to all

“Global Warming” is not about temperature, it’s about politics. It’s a vehicle the left uses to gain their utopia (world government), but they can’t say that, they have to obfuscate. The idea is to create a threat (crisis) so dire, that people will throw their hands up and say, ok, world government is the only thing that will save the planet. Of course for this to work they need lots of emotional basket-case useful idots jumping on board.

The statement that the Earths “temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8 degree Kelvin in about 150 years” is correct. For those of you who have never heard of Lord Kelvin, and his very useful temperature scale, zero degrees Kelvin is “absolute zero,” an unattainable state where a bit of mass has zero energy. In any case, that change translates to about 0.7 degrees Celsius or about 2 degrees Fahrenheit. But I’m sure you learned all that in high school.

This guy chose his dates carefully. His statement that temperatures are “amazingly stable” is demonstrably false. If you are inclined to understand global warming and have your thinking caps on visit this very neutral website (I say neutral because global warming isn’t a political issue, it’s an issue of science):

      http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/img/climate/globalwarming/ar4-fig-3-6.gif

2 degrees may not seem like a lot of change in your perspective as single human being experiencing the temperature you feel, but it’s plenty to drive extreme weather events such as hurricanes and tornadoes.

Anyway, this guy, this smart guy, is saying that the warming of the Earth is small and inconsequential (although he has no expertice in the area). But no climate scientist, and few other people, deny that the Earth is warming. There’s no real debate about that. The only genuine debate is how much humans are contributing to the change.

Hi brother. Is it fair to look at the ice age? Did man contribute to the freeze or the warming that melted it? Was that change more drastic then what were facing now?

The link is about scientists who now oppose man made global warming. The link seemed legit.

      http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Minority.Blogs&ContentRecord_id=927b9303-802a-23ad-494b-dccb00b51a12

My point is, once the “consensus” was the earth was flat but the more we learned the smaller that group got. It seems as time passes more are opposing MMGW but I honestly haven’t had time to get hard numbers.

You’ve mentioned the 10,000 who support. I don’t see how that holds weight as a standalone statement, 10k may have been 12K. I’d like to see numbers over a period of time. This would show if scientists were trending towards agreement over MMGW or if that consensus is shrinking. Headlines suggest a shift toward opposing man contributing to warming but will provide links once I read and verify legitimacy.

I also don’t get why skeptics are belittled for questioning an idea with an end result of total government control over everything from a corporate jet flying, limo riding man with a 30k dollar electric bill who believes the earth’s core is several million degrees, especially when the same people were warning of an ice age a few decades ago.

yes, they tried the ice age scare in the 70s. some people in 74 sold everything they had because of it.

Global cooling was a conjecture during the 1970s of imminent cooling of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere along with a posited commencement of glaciation. This hypothesis had mixed support in the scientific community, but gained temporary popular attention due to a combination of a slight downward trend of temperatures from the 1940s to the early 1970s and press reports that did not accurately reflect the scientific understanding of ice age cycles.

      sound familiar?

As usual, you’re wrong. Kelvin doesn’t measure temperature. It measures energy. It is always incorrect to express Kelvin in degrees. If you had any background in Physics or Chemistry, you’d understand that basic fact.

2 degrees Fahrentheit is indeed extremely stable if indeed it’s the average for the entire planet, which is functionally stupid to consider, since geography, sunlight, ocean currents, cloud cover, and wind currents (and more) affect temperature dramatically in a very small area of the planet. This was Giaever’s point.

Look at any single point on the Earth for a 50 year period, and it’s “average” weather state will change over that time, sometimes radically. That’s true if it was in the last 150 years, or 1500 years ago.

Your local weather man isn’t right on a 5 day forcast, yet you believe a Harvard professor can predict GLOBAL WEATHER PATTERNS 50 years in the future with only 30 years of real, hard weather data.

You sir, are just as foolish as the rest of the folks to have jumped on this bandwagon.

AS you mentioned, 2 degrees does not seem like much, but can mean a lot. And yes, we did learn that in school, but that was many moons ago.

So I did as Glenn reminds us to do and did my own research.

And low and behold, I found that you, like many of these so called “climate scientists”, had presented inaccurate data.

It seems that the difference between 288.0 & 288.8 Kelvin is only 1.44 degree’s Fahrenheit.

I know .56 degrees is not much, but it is 28% of your stated figure, and as you know, can make a big difference.

Now granted, you did say “about” 2 degree‘s so I’ll cut you a LITTLE slack, but when we are dealing with such small figures to begin with, an error of 28% seems a bit much to let slide.

That might be close enough for government work, but not for climate science. Not when my wallet depends on it.

JZS, like most unthinking liberals, plays the same tune as the paid pseudo scientists, including James Hansen from NASA, Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Penn State University, University of East Anglia in Britain where fabricated studies and results were exposed, and the IPCC, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of the our dear United Nations.
What one absolutely must understand, is that first, this is all part of the one world global agenda that penetrates every facet of the various universities to conceive, contrive and promote a policy whereby power and control can be engaged to implement their agenda. The universities and their cadre of pseudo scientists get “big money” to make this happen. They are profoundly not truth seekers, but actually engage the various “scientific” journals to promote their programs, but either deny publication to opposing researched viewpoints, or malign them.
Their favorite terminology is anthropogenic greenhouse gases(CO2, i.e., man made global warming), which is pure unadulterated B.S. This has been refuted extensivel by a goodly number of truth seeking scientists, including Lord Christopher Monckton
The real scare comes from the UN agenda and their phony IPCC results, and a review of the Kyoto Treaty, which fortunately we have not ratified, the content of which reveals their true intent of spreading the wealth, making our country into a banana “republic”, while financing the growth of the third world with US dollars.

“Michael Mann refuses to release his code & data.” And then He read he was good with that. That is arrogant. What am I suppose to say. Seig Heil & go along with the AGW agenda?

That is not the scientific method now is it?

He could be right (I doubt it); but he certainly pissed in the Cheerios and wants us all to go along with it.

I have seen to many pictures of thermometers at monitoring stations situated near heat sources. I read scientific American and Thomas Jefferson would never have made that mistake or go along with the AGW agenda just because the HERD is moving in that direction. Thomas Jefferson had a long correspondence with a friend about how to situate a thermometer to get a correct reading. I guess that no longer applies.

The satellite measurements of earth temperature are coming online. They are proving to be inconvenient to Al Gore & crowd.

Look…I know you are a troll that likes to hang about and take the opposite stand on every single story that is posted. Even so, the stuff that comes from you is sometimes so awful that I can’t stand it.

Global warming is about science? Really? How do you even get that? Have you LOOKED at the science? Almost every bit of evidence that Al Gore gave to start this whole craze has been proved false. We had global cooling scares in the 70s where the ‘scientists’ told us we needed to spread ash on the poles to help facilitate ice melt. If we would have done that, how absolutely terrible would things be now?

But I‘m sure things like that don’t both you. Okay, sure…all the science was wrong 40 years ago. But this time they are right! And sure…there WAS global cooling 40 years ago, but don’t let that get in the way of this whole “It’s gotten warmer over the past 150 years!” thing. And sure the hottest year on record was 1998 I believe and has been colder every single year since. And sure, this “increase in hurricanes” didn’t happen and we ended up with some of the quietest years on record.

But don’t let any of that get in the way of the “science”. Just because every prediction on what global warming should be causing has been wrong, doesn’t mean that nobody understands it!

The truth is that we may or may not be causing some factor. But until we understand it, we cannot DO anything about it. To do so is idiotic.

RavenGlenn, the idea that there was a big global cooling scare in the 70s is a myth. Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_cooling. The idea did circulate, there was nothing like a consensus, and it mostly this “scare” was the media running with an idea that would sell magazines.

Here’s a very short list of organizations that support actions to reduce CO2 emmissions:
National Academy of Sciences, United States of America
      Chinese Academy of Sciences, China
      Royal Society, United Kingdom
      Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia
      Academia Brasiliera de Ciências, Brazil
      Royal Society of Canada, Canada
      Academié des Sciences, France
      Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher, Germany
      Indian National Science Academy, India
      Accademia dei Lincei, Italy
      Science Council of Japan, Japan

Maybe Rush Limbaugh has disproved global warming to your satisfaction, but not the scientific crowd. Yes, some people disagree with global warming. but not most.

Spec, yep asking about temperatures over the history of the world is relevant and certainly does raise questions. Is this a normal pattern or something new? That is indeed the real debate. But my first thought is that, yes, that’s what makes global warming worrisome: the “feedback mechanisms” that have driven swings in climate. More ice, more heat reflected into space. Conceivably the Earth could have literally frozen solid at some point. But less ice, more heat absorbed (I’m out of characters).

By limiting resources, food/energy/healthcare, they can reduce our numbers. ObamaCare is all about choosing who lives and who dies. Not only that, but we’ve had ice ages, followed by global warming, for millions of years. The last one happened when we, as a species, were supposed to be migrating around Europe as cavemen and there went the Neanderthals in our wake. There was no man-made global warming causing these other cycles, so why would the natural cycle of the Earth’s warming and cooling be dismissed in any warming trends of the past century?

Then, there is the fact that the record heat temperatures some have had this year were records not seen since the early 1900′s. Was there global warming then, too? We hadn’t built and perfected the automobile when a lot of this was happening, so yeah, I can see how this is all “incontrovertible.”

Thank you Dr Ivan Glaever for speaking the Unspeakable TRUTH
about the goofy position on “global warming”

FORCED ON US by “Establishment Scientists,” Obama, Globalists, Progressives.

The highest praise to Dr. Glaever and the other 99 scientists who reject
fake science….and were brave enough to sign their names

on a petition to Obama to stop global warming nonsense…
based on fake or non-existent “data.”

Dr. Glaever reminds me of our Founding Fathers,
who put their names on the Declaration of Independence under threat of death.

Dr. Glaever is the Patrick Henry of our day!
God bless him and those other brave physicists. TEA!

To justify government money any organization has to show some breakthrough findings to justify their existence. This is nothing new as they have done it throughout history to make themselves a job. What else can you do with this kind of profession and their training more of them everyday, so look out there is more to come in the breakthrough department. Falls into that job saved category.

Major kudos to Dr. Giaever for having the COURAGE to take a stand!

If I recall correctly, we in Florida were supposed to be underwater by now. I am very familiar with the water levels down here since the 80′s, and they have not changed a bit.

I’m here in the Sunshine State, too, and no, the water levels have not changed since the mid-70′s. Speaking of the 70′s, the “climate change” pseudo-scientists were screaming that a new Ice Age was coming and that we would be frozen over. What happened to that?

I have a feeling that Scrat was NOT responsible, nor Manny, Sid, and Diego.

It’s jusr another liberal ploy to comtrol us. They destroy our freedoms, restrict our movement allow only select business to thrive and regulate the others out of business – hello Big Brother.
Look at the regulations coming out of the EPA now – Congress refused to pass Cap and Trade so they are doing it by regulation. Obumbler has said that he will find a way to get his policies passed.
Congress is losing its power and does not have the Cajones to take it back. We need more Tom Coburns and Jim Demints and less Hapless Harry and Fancy “the Queen of Botox” Nancy and their followers.

Just the fact it is the left supporting MCGCC tells you it is a lie manufactured to support their agenda. It is absolutely stupidly simple to see the lie but the left is so narcissistic they are unable to see truth if it poked them in the eye if it does not reflect what they want to see. Anytime I meet someone that believes man caused global climate change I automatically place them in my gullible pile and dismiss their views as irrelevant because I know they are not capable of independent thought and if I wanted to learn from them I would just have to listen to the left and we know what a waste of time that is. I am grateful people like this man are breaking away from the main stream and speaking up. He will be known through history as one of the great men.

Instead of being arseholes about global warming by playing into the idea of controlling what everyone uses for energy why can’t science do science: stay out of politics. Why not entertain the idea of more nuclear electric plants to reduce the amount of coal we use now? Why not subsidize hybrid technology, something several auto manufacturers have proven works. Instead politically correct “pseudo-scientists” have fostered ethanol on us, moving jobs to China by eliminating the incadecent bulb, pushing electric vehicles that do not reduce our carbon output exept in the Northwest and very few other places as we rely on using ‘coal’ for generating our electricity.

How about we quit letting government subsidize anything? Picking winners and loosers is what has gotten us into this whole mess. If the science is sound, and the economics are sound, the end product will be a commercial success, if not it will fail on it’s own. Quit wasting my money!

I have actually called in to the Shnitt show, and I have been on the Air. This list is substantial. Very nice.
Shnitt still has a problem admitting some things. He is a neo-con touting egotist. he also can not open his mind to accept anything “conspiratorial”. He can not conduct a conversation without attempting to match wits with every caller. They mention anything and he either questions them in a suspicious manner or he tries to impress people with his geographical prowess.
Any he just loves Newt. Gives Todd a “tingle”. Otherwise he is a decent guy.

You know. The scientists get money from the government to study Global Warming. There is no wonder that they want it to keep going on so they can get the money to research the subject. Those who stand up against it doesn’t get funded and leaves organizations. So it is our tax money at work again.

      yep.

      it’s like this,
either we are moving away from the sun because it’s losing mass as it dies… (cooling)
or we are moving closer, like they used to tell us in science class, because everything is moving towards the suns gravitational pull. (warming, not man made) which isn’t true because the sun is losing mass… all stars die out. (cooling)

either way we are lied to, and the only truth about global warming is that it’s not man made.
you will never destroy the earth no matter how hard you try, you are an arrogant fool to even think you can. the earth will destroy you before you destroy it, trust in that. nature is the master of compensation and adaptation.

If you believe it is incontrovertible when there is evidence for possible alternate explanations, it isn’t science. There is no such thing as “The Law of Human Induced Climate Change.” Until (or if) there is, every possibility must be considered if you are a true scientist. In fact, you should act as if there IS no such thing as catastrophic climate change in order to make your experiments that much more convincing and to hone your experimental approach. If you don’t consider that you may be wrong, then don’t call yourself a climate “scientist”. Call yourself what you actually are, a climate change zealot.

    THE CANCUN CLIMATE CHANGE SUMMIT
Cancun Climate Change Summit speaker Ian Roberts stated that there is a direct correlation between carbon emissions and expanding waistlines. Of course, he considers this more justification to reduce the consumption of fossil fuel. For once, the man is right, at least about the fact that the use of fossil fuel has a direct correlation to prosperity and productivity.

Seldom do the wannabe tyrants admit that their objective is to reduce prosperity and starve the population into submission. The man should be applauded for his honesty if not the validity of his argument.

At last the wannabe tyrants admit that control of the individual using hunger and poverty is the objective of the global warming initiatives.
