Non-Lethal Missile ‘Neutralizes’ Enemy Electronics

This missile may look deadly, but it’s not — unless you’re an electronic. Technology developed by Boeing with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory was successfully tested to damage enemy electronic systems.

Test: CHAMP Fries Enemy Electronics Using Microwaves

(Image: Defense Tech)

Using microwaves, the Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP) can disable the electronics of specific targets. This is the first success, according to Defense Tech, that brings technology closer to being able to disarm electronic systems without the electromagnetic plus generally associated with nuclear warheads, which are “not exactly a low-collateral damage tool.”

Here’s more about CHAMP from Boeing’s release:

CHAMP is a nonlethal alternative to kinetic weapons that neutralizes electronic targets. It would allow the military to focus on these targets while minimizing or eliminating collateral damage.

The CHAMP missile pointed at a set of simulated targets, confirming that the missile could be controlled and timed while using a High-powered Microwave (HPM) system against multiple targets and locations.

[...]

“It was as close to the real thing as we could get for this test,” said Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager for Boeing Phantom Works. “This demonstration, which brings together the Air Force Research Laboratory’s directed energy technology and Boeing’s missile design, sets the stage for a new breed of nonlethal but highly effective weapon systems.”

More tests for the three-year, $38 million program are expected later this year.

      @Watchingtheweasels

That book was a fantastic read (and the reality of the possibility is as scary .. just like watching “The Road” was).

That said, I’ve been looking for a long time for some solution to such an event (and EMP that I believe will ultimately happen, here, and possibly sooner than later). How does one protect their own electricity-producing potential? I used to think Solar would be the solution — to keep a few panels, charge controllers, and inverters on hand, but now it sounds as if the electronics in these devices will be destroyed as apparently any silicon circuitry will be fried no matter if it’s plugged in or not.

If anyone knows a good way to be prepared for such an event I’d sure like to have more information. I don’t care if we have lights or anything, but I sure would like to find a way to keep a small regrigerator running as well as a way to pump water from my drilled well so I can take a shower.

Great that they can pinpoint the target. Curious as to why this is coming out now. This technology has been around for a while. The headline is very misleading. While it is technically a non-lethal weapon on a large scale it has death written all over it. Kill electricity, kill people in industrialized nations. Look at what happens when the power goes out for a few hours or even days. Think about what would happen if electricity and electrical components of our industrial base was out for a prolonged period of time or even years. Computers, banking systems, phones, gps, gas pumps, water, waste water systems, car engines, medical equipment, etc. would not work. People in industrialized nations are so far removed from the ability to take care of themselves life would turn into complete anarchy.

By the way, our enemies already have or are developing similar weapons.

Please do some reading before you “experiment” with Microwave oven horns.

2.4 GHz is the resonant frequency of water.
This is why a microwave oven works.
The energy of an 802.11 device is the same kind of energy that cooks your food,
but on a much smaller scale.

This is important considering that humans are made of 98% water.
Exposure to even as little as a 1/4 watt amplified with a 14db antenna,
could lead to severe vision problems and possibly other health issues,
      notably fertility and sperm motility.

Then again, go ahead, clean the gene pool a tad…

This is what the cold war guys were aiming at each other,
causing blindness is the #1 health effect
long term exposure could lead to all sorts of issues, DNA damage, cancers etc.

Anyone can build an EMP or a signal jammer-the problem is they are illegal for civilians to own. You only need a little education in electronics, basic understanding and limitations of military targets and voi’la you can be a problem. But Nations have large budgets and resources; our enemies lie at the wait to strike. When our military is at its weakest-our Nation is at its breaking point-Our people ready to accept bondage; that is when our enemy will strike. No communications, no modern conveniences, no food-water-security, shelter under attack. NO, we are not ready for an EMP; but I get closer to ready everyday.

You can’t launch a nuke without electronics, and it can’t get where it’s supposed to without a guidance system. Of course like any other doomsday weapon, this only works if you strike first. As for stopping nukes after they’ve been launched, the people who describe it as trying to stop a bullet with another bullet are probably right. It was always a pipedream, a hoax, a scam to waste money and give false hope.
