‘Nonpartisan’ Shooting Vigil Features Palin and Beck Bashing

The event was supposed to be a somber prayer vigil in Oakland, CA — a “nonpartisan event” meant “to express solidarity with the victims” of the Tucson shooting. But like many media reports this past week, the candlelight vigil eventually degenerated into Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin bashing. With a little Dr. King sprinkled in to support those remarks.
The story comes from blogger “Zombie,” who gives a first-hand account of visiting the vigil. The event was sponsored by the East Bay Young Democrats and numerous other liberal organizations, and its goal was “to condemn political violence and violence in the local community.” But organizer Jonathan Bair went out of his way to explain it would be a “nonpartisan event” meant “to express solidarity with the victims.”
According to Zombie, it wasn’t. After some allusions to conservatives and claims of “violence-tinged speech and images” were erased by thoughtful speeches from clergy members, something happened:
And then everything went sour when the MC introduced someone named Roy Wilson, Program Director of Oakland’s Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center. At the climactic moment of this supposedly non-partisan event honoring victims, Mr. Wilson uncorked a rambling word-salad monologue that not only specified the bad guys by name, but devolved into a semi-coherent rant about social justice and racism and more mind-bending mixed metaphors than have ever been crammed into one paragraph. Here we were, trying to feel sympathy for the victims, and we had to endure this (transcription below):
Zombie provides a transcript, and also notices that the Dr. King’s “quotes” have been “mangled beyond recognition” (emphasis his):
Roy Wilson: “Dr. King enters this struggle boldly. He says, ‘Violence anywhere is a threat to violence everywhere. An injustice anywhere, is a threat to injustice everywhere. Rhetoric inciting violence anywhere, is a call to rhetoric to incite violence everywhere.’ Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, others in the Tea Party trend, claim that political events tied to violence and rhetoric tied to violence are not causing the division in our nation. Tens of thousands of African-Americans have been lynched in a sea of rhetoric dripping with racist blood. Workers have been shot down on the picket line, drummed under by the rhetoric of mis-accusations. Students have been shot down protesting for peace under the rhetoric of unamericanism. Tens of thousands of Native Americans have been annihilated under the rhetoric of White American exceptionalism. We have to act. Dr. King says that ‘Courage is the ability to go forward in spite of frightening situations. Cowardness’ he says, ‘is a submissive surrender to circumstance.’ We’re asking everyone to ask all of our elected officials at the municipal level, the county level, the state level, the federal government, to pass laws that prohibit the use of rhetoric and actions and campaigns that incite violence. We ask that we all go back to our organizations of faith, our unions, our schools, our high schools, our middle schools, our elementary schools, and create statements demanding that there be communication and debate based on love, based on peace, based on community, based on a stronger democracy. Now, we have to be courageous because some of us may say that’s just not enough, or why, that might not make a difference. Remember, words make a difference. I’ve just asked all of us to do some things and put words in the public, put words with the official seal of our government, put words under the titles of our schools, that say “We are family.”
The Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center’s website only lists board members, and thus does not list Wilson as a leader. (It does list Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) as the founding chair, and she also spoke at the Oakland event.) However, the site Oaklandseen.com refers to him as “program director” for the center in an article about a recent letter he sent the site.
What did that letter say?
It chastised “media personalities and spokespersons for the political trend that includes the ‘Tea Party’” for having the audacity to claim they had not contributed to the recent shootings. It also called on elected officials to:
…create legislation that will prohibit within their jurisdictions campaign literature and events that use language implying acts of violence against political opponents. We ask for legislation that can prohibit words and phrases such as “take out,” “Don’t retreat, Reload,” “kill,” “shoot down,” or other language that serves to divide our people in ways that imply or explicitly incite violence against elected officials, public servants and campaign opponents.
It should be noted that the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center has scrubbed the reference to the “Tea Party” from a version of the letter on its website:
It appears that some media personalities and spokespersons for an extreme political trend reject the position that they, with their actions and rhetoric of violence against elected officials who work for the uplift of the people of the United States, have played a role in creating the environment and conditions conducive to inciting violent attacks.
That’s different from the one sent to Oaklandseen.com:
It appears that some media personalities and spokespersons for the political trend that includes the Tea Party reject the position that they, with their actions and rhetoric of violence against elected officials who work for the uplift of the people of the United States, have played a role in creating the environment and conditions conducive to inciting violent attacks. [Emphasis added]
“So much for a non-partisan vigil,” Zombie concludes.

It is ALWAYS and without a doubt the left that spews hatred, violence and condones the rhetoric of killing – think of all the horrible things they said about Bush and suggested his death on way more than one occasion. This was done by the very same people that now suggest the right is hate filled, racist and condones violence. Honestly with or without Glenn Beck, Rush and others….these things are right there SO EASY TO SEE….at this point – I certainly don’t need anyone to “brainwash” me – it is a no brainer~!!! I deeply appreciate Glenn & Rush and listen to them daily – but they only reinforce for me what I see for MYSELF every day. It is so damn frustrating that people actually believe what they hear on the left. I have a few family members that are so so so taken in by the leftist rhetoric that they are honestly unable to see the reality of it all. They are the typical liberals that sprew the baloney without knowing or wanting to know….the real truth. It is getting to the point now where I don’t even want to be around them just knowing their mindset. I do give total credit to Glenn for opening my eyes and allowing me to see and most importantly speak for myself.

They have long since had a rational thought and can only parrot the rantings of their leftest contributors (similar to mind control), because that is what is expected from them in return for votes and donations.

Such a government makes a mockery of the republic. Our leaders govern like kings and queens while we find ourselves wondering what has happened to the land we once called free. Political parties are a thought of the past, either people are so far left or right that the middle has faded away. Our representatives refuse to police their own. They ignore reality and exaggerate the truth. They pass legislation in the middle of the night hoping that we aren‘t paying attention. They walk the halls of congress with the attitude of “do as you’re told, not as I do”. There will come a time that it will hit the fan and God help us all.

Thanks for specifying which of us disgust you. The fact that you didn‘t do it the first time isn’t my fault, nor does it constitute a Straw Man argument. If your point is that Olbermann is a jerk, then I agree. My point, though, is that there are “useful idiots” on both sides. If you don’t agree, then you haven’t been listening.
As to the founders, you should read the real Thomas Jefferson. He supported the French Revolution, for crying out loud. And you were the one that brought up Rand.
I read your posts, and I think you’re generally pretty bright. Don’t waste it on hating people. You have something to say and the right to say it — be part of the solution.

That vigil in the context of a large and growing group of screaming maniacs in the media and in Congress, saying essentially the same thing? Well, then it become significant. Many of your compatriots on this site said and continue to chant the same exact mantra actually, in regards to this event.
Groups cannot be held accountable for individual nut cases or isolate fringe groups, but when the larger group itself takes on these aspects, then it becomes a matter of concern. The fact is, “you guys” unequivocally blamed this on the Right before the bullets were even cool on the sidewalk and you haven’t stopped the drumbeat since that moment. This is not just politics, this is utter character assassination and borderline “mindless follower” type behavior going on. It’s been shown that the maniac was apolitical by evidence from impartial third parties, and yet you and people like this group continue to shout so loud that you cannot hear the more rational voices telling you your error.
If you want to not be painted with a broad brush, then it behooves you to notice the flaws in your overall group of association and call *them* down for their lack of rational thought.

Report Post »I agree…Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin & the Tea Partiers all have been spreading their crazy out of control love for their Country…Glenn spreading “Faith, Hope & Charity” teaching people about our founding fathers and praising George Washington for winning the war against the red coats, and making him out to be heroic leader. Who is Glenn, to teach us good American family values and to have faith in God…and Sarah the way she goes off on them family fishing and hunting trips, how dare she have fun with her family riding quads and enjoying Alaska, how dare she act/speak in such a sweet intelligent loving way to the American people about true principles and values…and for you Tea Party people, is the only thing you believe in is your constitutional rights, family values and faith in God…what is this Country coming to with such rhetoric being spewed all over this Nation by true American people. Who do think you are to follow God, be charitable and defend the Constitution of the United States and denouncing violence!

Frederick Douglass came to this conclusion after he read the Constitution the first time. The first Republican president was Abraham Lincoln. The military installation was Ft. Sumter, S.C. The Democrats wore grey uniforms when they marched on Washington. At least 618,000 Americans died in the civil war. THE WAR THE DEMOCRATS STARTED TO DEFEND SLAVERY.
The Republicans are not without guilt. It was a Republican Supreme Court that allowed the heinous division of powers between the fenderal and state governments that allowed the KKK (the Hamas wing of the Democratic Party) to run roughshod over the rights of Republicans. Remember, in a land of secret ballots there are very few ways to tell how a man would vote. Between 1865 and 1959 most blacks voted Republican. That is why the south was the “Solid South” for the Democrats for so long.
The Democrats were losing political power in the 1950s when the far left started to move up the political ranks just as the conservative Christians are retaking the Republican party today.
The Challenge for FOOLSGOLD is to seek facts to counter anything I have said here. Then looking into the mirror, see if you still see yourself as a proud leftist, the white hooded former confederates who didn’t want to lose the power over their “property”

This where ppl should go with the radicals. DEMAND proof, agree with them, sympathize with them and say ” So you have the proof on this?? I can’t wait to see it” , but say it like you are on their side. When they try to deflect and redirect just stand your ground and demand proof. Hold them to fire for the truth. This will in fact enrage them and maybe you will get lucky and they’ll have an Ed Rendell moment!

Day 1: Crazy person murders people in Tucson.
Day 1 + 1 minute: Some in the media begin to blame Sarah Palin and demand that she responds.
Day 2: It begins to look like the shooter had nothing to do with Palin. Media still demands Palin respond.
Day 3: Shooter looking to be more insane than ideological. Media still can’t believe that Palin hasn’t responded to something she has nothing to do with.
Day 4: Shooter could care less about politics. Where is Palin? Why won’t she respond?
Day 5: Palin responds via video. Story on NBC Nightly News trots out her “target map” and ties it to Gifford, then shifts to focus on two words of her eight minute video by interviewing people who say she’s anti-Semitic and wondering what this will do for her chances in 2012.
It‘s really hard to believe that Palin doesn’t like the mainstream media more.

I’ve never heard Matthews, Olbermann, Maddow, O’Donnell, Schultz or anyone at MSNBC tell you to do your own research on any topic.
