Not Everyone Thinks a Confederate Flag on Some Texas License Plates Would Be a Good Idea

Via CBS DFW:
Would you buy a license plate with a Confederate flag on it? State officials are looking at possibly launching a new Texas state license plate honoring veterans of the War Between the States.
Mr. Hilary Shelton, with the NAACP in Washington, D.C., said that the Civil War may not be something we want to celebrate.
“When many look at that history, we think about it in terms of secession, that is we were seceding from the Union in the southern parts of the country,” explained Shelton. “Many would view that, quite frankly, as treason, because they meant to actually destroy the existing governmental structure. But when we dig deeper, the issue becomes even more offensive to many African Americans and those that sought freedom for those of darker skin in our country.”
“When you understand the Confederate history, and what it stood for,” said Dallas resident Mark Jones, “it’s directly slapping African Americans in the face.”
In terms of the Civil War, Shelton said that the Confederate flag was actually very un-American. “It was the flag that was flown during a war to actually tear the nation apart,” Shelton explained.
“I don’t think that this will unify us,” said Carrollton resident Carolina Arreola. “Our patriotism is to the Unites States flag.”
But the Texas Sons of Confederate Veterans have renewed their push for a Texas license plate that includes the rebel flag in its design.
Thomas Muhammed founded an organization to recover reparations for slavery. Still, he would not oppose the license plates. “I don’t see how a flag hurts someone, as long as the people displaying these license plates are not killing people physically who are of African descent.” Muhammed said.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 10:38amThe Confederacy is the subject of such derision because neither the radical left or right want you to study its consitutional provisions of government, or reasons for wanting to be independent. The rightful governmental limitations we clamor for even presently – in both north and south.
It would pay some of you Yankees to study the abolishionist writings of Lysander Spooner, who constantly excoriated northern legislators for not providing a single topic bill addressing slavery – but constantly using it as leverage to pass fiscally punitive measures against the southern economy. You‘d be surprized to learn Jefferson Davis agreed with Spooner’s essay on the Unconstitutionality of Slavery – yet was always victim to the duality of its mention in Congress as a “means to an end” that had serious ramification apart from the institution.
While Beck’s tearful fairy tale of the 3/5th clause in the US Constitution being a road to freedom, he overlooks the same language in the CSA Constitution. And, that the CSA constitution in fact contains a “single topic bill” provison in Article I, section 10 ; no doubt in response to the Congressional abuses noted by both Spooner and Davis, as well as other southern leaders of the time.
In addition, the Amendment process was completely removed from the powers of Congress by SectionV of the CSA Constitution. Only the states could propose or pass Constitutional amendments – and this process was to be initiated at the request of only

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 11:18amI do not know what “are” history is?
But I am out to prove the point that Patrick Cleburne was right, and that we’d better pay attention to how right he was:
“Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before it is too late… It means the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern schoolteachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the war; will be impressed by the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision… It is said slavery is all we are fighting for, and if we give it up we give up all. Even if this were true, which we deny, slavery is not all that our enemies are fighting for. It is merely the pretense to establish sectional superiority and a more centralized form of government, and to deprive us of our rights and liberties.”
This quote given not long before his death at Franklin, TN.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 10:30amThose who call themselves “African-American” or who use any hyphenated-America term, put America second and insult every “American”. Organizations such as the NAACP should be promoting American history and racial unity rather than attempting to rewrite our history and divide our nation along racial lines. America is the greatest nation on Earth – Americans are the greatest people on Earth – we should strive to celebrate our history and our unique freedoms every day, and in any way possible.

That flag symbolizes black sepratisim and superiority. Nobody say a word about that. I say if blacks are offended by the confederate flag, get over it. Posted on June 25, 2011 at 10:50amYes, if you do not understand history, you are correct. I had a great-great grandfather who fought with Confederacy and defended Atlanta. His brother was a staff officer for Sherman. My great- great grandfather’s brother that defended Atlanta never owned a slave and was a farmer. From his diaries I have learned his motivation. He fought for his states rights, his home and his family. If you think these reasons are traitorous, I pity you. From my other great-great grandfathers writing and letters I have learned he fought to force the south back into the union and bring here into submission. You decide who was traitorous to the Constitution. I have made up my mind and choose to have the Confederate Battle flag flying below the Stars and Strips.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 6:06pmIt was the north that behaved dishonorably. What kind of nod to freedom is to put your tyrants boot on the neck of others so that they will do as you will. Lincoln was an A$$. Left to it’s own devices Slavery would have died a natural death (at it did in other countries) and we wouldn’t have the race issues that we were left with. Do just a little research and you’ll find that the emancipation proclamation came after the war was started, freed only confederate slaves and was a ploy used by Lincoln to get the northern states to fight. There was a serious morale problem with the union. Lincoln was looked up to as a great president; he was a horrible president. He negated much that the founding fathers did to protect us from an overarching federal government. Now look what we are left with states rights are practically non existent

This was not a civil war; it was a war between 2 countires! As I pass by the flags, I am reminded of the honor & valor of the soldiers who marched into battle willing to give everything, including their lives, for the causes they held dear. The South was more than slavery & it did not invent slavery. It perpetuated a system that had been in place, in one form or another, across the planet since recorded time began. Long before the Declaration of Independence, the system of slavery was entrenched in all of the Colonies. North & South alike tolerated its use, as did the Romans, the ancient Africans, the Native American Indians & other cultures of people. Thankfully, slavery was ended & its demise was a shining light in the devastation of the South. Yet, it wasn’t the only light; nay, the determination of the Old South to survive in spite of its wounds has been a beacon of light to Southerners, from the day the beloved Robert E. Lee surrendered, through Reconstruction, to the 21st Century. The aftershocks of the massive Civil War bloodbath have continued for 150 years. I pray the day will come when the Old South will be recognized – not for its role in slavery, but for being a thriving, vibrant & honorable part of the ever-evolving collective history of America – the good, the bad & the ugl

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 11:04amMost historians are uncomfortable pointing out that the Gadsden flag flew as a symbol of defiance by 13 colonies who held and endorsed slavery. The Declaration of Independence was signed by representatives from 13 slave holding colonies. The Articles of Confederation was signed by 12, the Constitution was signed by 11 – only two of the former colonies had ended slavery during that period, which spanned more than a decade.
Both flags are revered by us southerners. Not because of the sad legacy of slavery, but because of thier defiance of tyranny. Real tyranny, that threatens to enslave us all – irrespective of any race – but based on idealogy. Both flags are flags of freedom, the Confederate flag better defines the constitutional limitations of the government better than the former – which are those same ideals I support today. I do not support the Constitutional provisions of slavery that existed in both the US and CS consitution at the time of the conflict.
Why can we not celebrate the things both flags had right? We all admit, and have corrected, the things both had wrong – slavery. If anything, the Confederate flag means that the people will stand up for themselves in the face of a government that has become oppressive to liberty.
I say fly it, along with the Gadsden – and point the finger of accusation against the rightful usurper – The Federal Government. “We the People” have awakened, north and south, and want our Consitutional Republic back.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 9:49amA new flag would be better. The confederacy was about “states rights” which is why they never worked well together in the war…every state was out for its own well being. A state “seceding” is the same thing…which is fine if you are self-reliant and self-sustainable…which none of our states are. You’d also have to be able to stand up to the combined might of the remaining states (the Federal Government) which you won’t be able to.
In the end, the confederacy was a lost cause from day one which resulted in freeing the slaves…the only good thing to come out of so many lives thrown away on futility.
The souths final chance rested on France (of all the irony) and hopes that it would officially recognize the rights of the confederacy to exist (somewhat like Israel in that narrow view)…but it all rested on France needing the cotton from the southern states…but since France was now getting the bulk of its cotton from India…there was certainly no gain in making America its enemy.
Without another respected entity respecting the right of Texas (or Hawaii) to secede and exist apart from the whole…it is all just so much hooey.

If they were out to destroy the government, then isn’t this current administration that means to destroy our constitution and our existing governmental structure treason too? Like Michelle Obama said, we need to change our history, our culture and our conversations? What is that? The north made it about slavery. Just watch or read the Gangs of NY to get a clue about how the north felt about black people. The north was losing the war, they were taking every immigrant who came off the boats just to have an army. Virginia seceded from the union May 23, 1861. In 1863 Lincoln freed the slaves. If it was about slavery wouldn’t he have freed them in 1861? My gggrandfather fought in the civil war he enlisted June 27,1861 and remained until Lee’s surrender on April 9,1865. No one in my entire family, let alone him had one slave ever. They were fighting for their southern rights and the ever increasing tyranny of the Federal government. History repeats itself. We pay tribute to the sacrifices they made in fighting back against what they perceived as an attack of their right as a community of people, joined together by a shared culture, to live free from the dictates of what they felt was an oppressive Federal govt. Many Southerners joined the Rebel cause believing they embraced a revolution like the one their great grandparents had undertaken in the 1770s. Many were average farmers or townspeople who did not own slaves but fought & died for their communities & families. Of course, Southerners cannot help but recognize the inhumaneness of enslavement & acknowledge its harmful effects! I have a U.S. Flag & a Confederate Flag flying at the entrance of my property. As I pass by the flags, I am reminded of the honor & valor of the soldiers who marched into battle willing to give everything, including their lives, for the causes they held dear. The Civil War resulted in the loss of over 600,000 people – yes; the utter destruction of a generation of men & boys (and women). Because the Confederacy was defeated, that unique Southern culture was wounded dramatically, never to fully recover. What remains of that culture is often derided by those who may not know or understand history from the perspective of the defeated. They equate the South with slavery & they err in encapsulating the South & its culture in that type of deceptive box.

We have to allow EACH OTHER to wear what they want (as long as it’s decent), fly what ever flag (as long as it’s decent) etc. This looking around for things to gripe about has to end.
Report Post »The Confederate Flag means “DIXIE” to me. The Civil War had lots of heroes and lots of bad guys from the North as well as the South. The Confederate Flag is Historic. Black people need to remember: NO ONE CAN OFFEND YOU ABOUT ANYTHING UNLESS YOU LET THEM. It’s not meant as OFFENSIVE. (and if it is, so what?!! You gonna be offended by someone who would try to offend you???) (think about that one). “ I wish I was in the Land of Cotton”…. ‘South’ is something in the heart…..it’s strong but guess what is stronger? “Oh say, can you see, by the Dawn’s early light….” now you’re getting serious with me! :) Have a nice weekend everyone! God Bless America and our Troops.

I suppose a KKK flag would be more disturbing, the Confederate flag is less disturbing because I am subconsciously partial to the Stars and Stripes and the colors Red, White, and Blue…
I say leave it be. Black people rock Confederate flags too sometimes.
A lot of southern blacks fly that flag I think.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 10:43amThe civil war wasn’t just about Slavery, that is what the left tries to teach us, even I up until recently always thought it was specifically about slavery….
The Southern states found out they were being put under the thumb of Northern bankers and the south was really at the time the powerhouse industrialists of the nation, they wanted to succeed from the North and become their own country, slavery was demonized by abolishionists as well, I’m finding that if you really start looking deeply into US history, blacks were beaten and mistreated by some slave owners, but this was not the norm and in fact I’ve come to find there were blacks in public office, blacks involved in the US government, not as slaves, but as Statesmen ! There is a lot of misrepresentation about the South, about slavery and about blacks in US history…. Blacks fought side by side with Whites in the Civil Was and in fact in the War of Independence!

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 10:49amI’m a Southerner by birth and my heart still loves the south. I’ve never correlated the confederate flag with slavery. As I remember most of the history I’ve read, the North were more selective against blacks than the southerners. The war was between the North & South, not started on slavery. The so called North had their share of slaves as well. I always considered the thing against the confederate flag was bunk, as seeing it reminds me of the wonderful days I had as a child in the southern culture. I love the South, and love both of our countries flags. God Bless America!

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 1:28pmI think there are several sides of this issue to look at. One of my ancestors was a poor farmer from Georgia who went to war at about 50, fought almost the entire thing until he was captured and died in a prison camp in New York. He or his family never owned a slave. Ironically on the other side, I have slave owning ancestors that didn’t bother to take up a rifle and fight.
Report Post »Someone above said that it was a flag before the war, unless I’m mistaken that is a falsehood. In fact, the flag was devolped during the war, and was never actually the national flag, but used by some armies as the battle flag.
I think that the real problem people have with it is that it was adopted by the KKK and other racist groups AFTER the war as their symbol. Left representing what it did during the war- states rights, ect, it might not be viewed as offensively. It was the 1870 period on when it was used as a symbol for racism where the hatred really sprung. Another bad side effect of reconstruction.
All that said, you’d never see me flying the flag, but that’s my choice. If someone wants to then that’s their business. But I’ll choose to honor my ancestors, who probably never actually fought under that specific flag, in a different way.

Regardless, the war was fought for many reasons, and there are still many things in Southern culture that DESERVE to be celebrated. They are still afforded their freedoms and are free to have pride in their culture, just as you and I.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 6:56pmThere is a lot to be said about symbolism. I am southern by birth and proud of that fact. But symbols can mean different things to different people. After all think of all the meanings of the crucifix. Not that it means that because someone interprets a symbol in a bad way means we can get rid of it entirely, just that we should not set out to cause division amongst ourselves. We the People have a right to do many things, but we also should be aware that all actions have consequences. I wish to be clear, I’m speaking broadly here, not condemning the use of the Confederate flag. For most it simply is an expression of southern pride. And a possible good outcome of this is to cause a dialog that helps people understand the history of the Civil War.
Mace, thank you for educating yourself and not rushing to condemn because of the possible connotations of this symbol.
Please to all my fellow Blazers who are lashing out at the black community, stop. We stand for higher ideals than reactionary anger. I have known many blacks that feel unease at that flag because they have met with racists that use it as a prominent symbol. That is understandable unease. I am uneasy when I hear the word ******* used. It is a self preservation instinct. What we need to do is peacefully educate, and stand for truth. A soft word turns away wrath. We know evil people use false stereotypes to condemn us, but lets not stoop to their level.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 7:07pmI should also point out that there are many people in our society that are simply ignorant. Not willfully, though there are many of those as well. They simply need to understand the truth of the matter. But if we do not speak the truth in love, what happens? Do we win the argument. Yes, but what does it matter? If we cannot be the beacon that draws others in, we will lose. I love my country, but that extends to my fellow countrymen. And there are many who have been deceived. That must be remedied, and it requires us standing strong in both the truth and love.
I know many here are anticipating violence in the coming days. I’m sad to say I too think it will come. But while fighting for truth and justice is good, it should grieve us that it would be neccessary. Lives will be lost. And while we may win in the end, there will be a terrible price to pay. Not only will the evil and willfully ignorant be forced to face that fact, but so will honest people whose crime will be having been lied to throughout their lives.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 7:52pmWhen you have ancestors like I do who left what they were doing to go to the defense of their State, their families, and their homes when they were being attacked by Lincoln’s 70,000 Northern troops, and the flag under which they fought was the Confederate battleflag, you don’t tend to believe that the Confederate flag is nothing more than a “redneck” symbol.
I had 3 ancestors from Charleston that came from a merchant family (not plantation owners, not slave owners). In 1861, one boy left medical school to enlist as a Private, one boy left The Citadel to enlist as a Private, and one left a job in his father’s store to enlist as a Private. In 1864 the first boy was a 2nd Lt in his infantry company and was killed when he was shot in the head during a charge against Federal breastworks at Drewery’s Bluff, Va., the second boy was mortally wounded when he was shot through the lungs while serving as a regimental Sgt Maj at Calhoun, Ga., and the third boy was the only one to survive the war. The family lost everything they had in the war–their sons, the father, and their family business.
No, the Confederate battleflag means a lot more to me and others like me than just a “redneck” symbol, and it certainly is not “an odious blight on the universe” as the NAACP descirbed it in a “National Resolution” passed by them in 1991. It is about bravery, honor, and fighting for one’s beliefs.

No, The Civil War established just the opposite. Those who wish man get a front plate with the Stars and Bars to show their southern pride.
